Sometimes SOME people who are depressed look at things around them and blame that for their depression. It may be their eating; it may be their size; maybe because they have a big nose or buck teeth! They address those problems with perhaps weight-loss, plastic surgery or whatever, only to find that they are still depressed. The answer wasn't the eating, big nose etc. The answer lay inside them - lack of chemicals in the brain, unrecognised/untreated trauma in their lives etc. I have a feeling that this is what your Dr was referring to. You commented on your depression appearing at a specific time in your life - relationship breakup etc. Is this when you started to over-eat? That would indicate that the food wasn't the cause, but the symptom.
Hope this helps,
Kris

If you have clinical depression, otherwise known as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), you are depressed because of a biochemical imbalance in your brain, which would be why you are depressed regardless of whether you overeat or not.
However, that does not mean that being depressed doesn't have an effect on your eating habits.

I had stated that "do I eat because I'm depressed or depressed because I eat." Well I had a couple of folks tell me I should talk to my doctor.....Well, I did....interesting answer....according to him...I'm depressed whether I eat or not! lol....Well that helped a lot!
