Glad you are getting out. I went hiking this past weekend also. I did the roller coaster in VA from Blackburn trail center to Bear's Den Hostel.
I am also going hiking this coming weekend too and hoping to hike both days. 9.5 miles one day and 9 the next, but we will see how that works out.

Finally the weather is cooperating..we went out yesterday and hiked the loop around Blood Mountain in GA. Lots of rock, lots of ups and boy am I sore today.
The first week in April we are doing the Dick's creek to Franklin section on the AT. Got a new backpack, and a neoair, so gearwise I am all set! Now gotta work on getting the food ready.

We are hiking part of the GA section of the AT, probably from Stover Creek to Woody Gap. We had planned to do the whole GA section last fall, but three day in got driven off the trail by horrible weather. So we are taking a bite-sized chunks approach this time around. We live in Middle Tennessee, so there is some pretty good hiking around here if you are willing to drive an hour or so (which I am). Montgomery Bell State Park has been our favorite for a while, but we have worn the trails thin, so we are going to try some new things this year. Thinking about hitting parts of the Cumberland Trail, and of course Big South Fork and Frozen Head are favorites for overnight trips.

The weather was too icky to get out this weekend, but I am hoping next weekend to lace up my boots and get some miles in!

Gald to see others are getting out. This winter has been hard. I have stayed in hiking shape by working out at the gym, but nothing is like really hiking.
Where are you headed in July? We will be rafting the Grand canyon the first week of June so after that then I can plan our AT hikes for the summer and fall. We have been hiking in PA the first of this month and we also have another hiking planned near Lehigh Gap in April.

Where is closer to home?

We have been out on one small hike, and boy, am I out of shape since last fall! However, we have our next AT scheduled at the end of July. Three nights out for this section, and then we hope to get a couple more sections in before the end of the year. In the meantime, we are actively investigating hikes closer to home.

Like I said welcome and get out and hike cause that is a good way to get in shape for backpacking. Find hills and carry your backpack. In the winter I carry 20 pounds of kitty litter in my pack on the treadmill at the gym. :)

Has any one been out on any training hikes?
I went hiking last weekend and encountered 4 foot snow drifts and no one had set foot on the trail. We did about 8 miles of blazing our own trail on the AT. It was really cool, but very hard. I burned a ton of calories.

Of couse anyone is always welcome. Glad you could join us.
We are in the stages of talking about hiking in the fall on the AT near Centrail Va which will be close to your area. I was thinking around Roanoke area? I am working on getting in better shape too. We are thinking about just an overnight trip so that way people who are just starting out will have a chance to come and it gives us some motivation to get out and get in shape.
We are glad to have you on board.

Hi everyone! I am fairly new to Sparkpeople and just found this team when looking for hiking groups. I live in Virginia (Richmond.) I used to really get into hiking and exploring but have never been backpacking or on any overnights. I am training now to get back into shape as I want so much to go exploring again. Would you all consider including a newbie? I have hiked around town with a local hiking club but have yet to make it to the AT - it is a goal of mine. When and where are you all planning to meet up? Thanks for reading, Pat

You go girl.
1 pound a week is a very safe way to lose weight. Most of the time when people lost it slow, they do not gain it back.
I am losing about a pound a week too. I am about 10 pounds from my goal, but I do 10 pound goal increments, but I think this will be it.
This snow we have had in WV has kept me active. Between shoveling and snowblowing, I have burned alot of calories.
Can't blame you about not venturing into the woods with the snakes. That is why I have hiked PA in winter, no snakes, and the rocks gets filled in. Can't wait to get back out again, but we have another round of snow coming so that will keep me busy for awhile.

Hi all,

Hanging in on plan. Had a special celebration yesterday but stuck to my plan for what I was going to do. Ate all meals on plan with a celebration ice cream. That was instead of cake and ice cream and planned for ahead. I'm very slow on the weight loss but know my body is just struggling to shed the pounds. I'm having an average of 1 pd per week. Some weeks more but then a week after maintain. 33 gone and 30 to go to goal. Hiking will definitely be easier with less weight. I can really look at shaving ounces in my pack when the body weight is less. Hope to see improvement in my hiking time with less weight. For now it's riding my bike and walk/jog to keep active. No mts here in FL to challenge and with all the snakes I'm not anxious to venture off into the woods.

Happy Trails

Kizzy

Sounds like you have a good plan.
My parents are heading to Florida today. They are going to stop here for a few days on their trip down and we are about to get a blizzard tomorrow into Saturday so they are going from one frozen tundra to another.
Weight lose is going well and another pound down. I can only hope to be at my goal weight when I go on my rafting trip in June. We'll see how that works out. For now with this nasty weather I have been hitting the gym, but what I really want to do is hike.
Hope everyone is doing well?

Hi all,

Teri, yes I'm in Florida now. I'll be heading back to Maine mid to late April. When I get back I'll start hitting the local trails and get some incline miles going. Right now I'm trying to walk and ride my bike along with some light weight work. Really hope to get out on the AT at some point this spring.

I've done Harpers Ferry north to Deleware Water Gap with few sections in middle of PA to finish up. If it works for a group outing I'm up for anything I haven't done yet. VA is probably about as far south as I could venture due to travel time. TN, NC & GA are waiting till I can work on them next spring driving up from FL rather than back from Maine.

Hope everyone is having a good week on their weight plan. So far so good for me. One day at a time. The scales are veryyyyyy slow to move but I've excepted that fact and just keep picking away at things 1/2 to 1 pd at a time.

I was thinking south of Roanonoke, but not sure yet as I have not done enough reseach. I need to get my trip out west over with first, then I can think about fall.
I am also thinking about coming to GA in October and hiking, but again we will see how it all pans out.

I'm in depending on when it is and if I can get time off work. I already requested over 3 weeks off for this year. Harper's Ferry is about as far as I would want to travel.

Just let me know in advance.

Congrads on being down on the weight. I have also lost about 15 pounds and a bunch of inches and still trying to lose another 10.
I remember when we talked last that your daughter was getting married, so now you have another one getting married. How exciting!!!!
You are in FL for the winter, right? When do you go back to Maine?
I have a little left to do in PA and then I will be working on NJ and Central VA.
Welcome back and I hope that finally we might get to hike together in the fall.

How is everyone doing as far as getting motivated and getting in shape?

Thanks for the re-welcome.

Good to be back chatting with others having similar goals. Working on losing the weight. So far down 30 pds but have 40 to go to reach my goal.

No hiking last year with my youngest daughter getting married. Seemed to be always something that needed to be done or organized. Also I'm now a "snowbird" and after taking 4 months off from the office I felt guilty heading out again. Not sure if this summer will bring the same thing or not. Hope where this wedding is in the fall and my older daughter is veryyyy organized doing everything herself that will give me more time to do some hikes. I'd really like to try to get out for a week or so in May. I'd like to finish up what I haven't completed in PA as well as try to do all or most of NJ. I just have to make arrangements for shuttles and or find a hiking partner to do car swaps. As April approaches I'll start to organize a little more.

For now I'm riding my bike here in FL and walking. Not much for hiking here so just working on losing the weight and keeping active. I know for every pd lost, hiking will be easier. Why worry about pack weight when I have more than enough extra pounds on my body to trim off.

That would be cool if you could join us. I hadn't heard from you in awhile so glad you have you back on board. Did you get much hiking in this year?
i like you thinking and always have, of the car shuttle hikes.
I was hoping to get out to hike this weekend but it looks like another weather pattern is on it's way to VA/WV/PA, so I do not want to drive in it. I was going to head up to Swatara Gap and fill in a short section I am missing, but we will see how that pans out.
Glad you are back.

Hi folks,

I'm reconnecting here at Sparkpeople as I continue on my weight loss journey. Depending on the time I would be intested in hiking a section of the AT. The problem I have right now is my Daughter is getting married Sept 18th, so before that date would be difficult unless a Spring hike (late May early June) or after that date. I've section hiked little over 400 miles of the AT. Being from Maine I've been working on sections Harpers Ferry and north. If it worked I'd probably make it a week trek for me, not all backpacking, probably a week of day sections. Have done that with some other hikers and it works well. We do a car swap, parking at ending point for day and drive around to start. Adds a little to logistics for cars but makes for a great way to hike without the stress of all the gear. We had a regular campground we used as a "base camp" and went out from there every day. Without the heavy backpack you can bump up the miles in a day without strain on the joints and feet.

Just a suggestion to think about.

I'll work to reconnect here and post more frequently. Love chatting about the AT.

So right now there are 3 of us. Come on there are alot of people in this group so let's get out and hike.
I know what you mean about the treadmill. It is pouring buckets here and doesn't show any signs of letting up. I had a delievery to make this morning for work and I am soaked. Enough already, I want to get outside and do something.
I plan to hike this coming weekend if the weather is Ok.

I'm already getting prepared :) Got out for a short walk yesterday, but plan to start doing more strenuous morning hikes as soon as things dry up just a little. For now, I'll have to contend with the dreaded treadmill.

We have not set a day yet and I feel that once the summer gets here and we know how many are going and what people want to do, then we can make some plans. I am looking at a section in Central VA that won;t be to hard on anybody. I think a section south of Roananoke would be best, as lot of people are from NC and SC and GA.
If anyone has any suggestion, I am open to anything.
All I know is we need to motivate each other to get out and hike and prepare for it. I think if we have something to look forward to then we will work hard to get to the goal.

Cool.....I am looking forward to this fall now and planning a hike.
Come on the rest of you, let's get on the band wagon and thing about a hike. Even if you don't live near the Central VA sections, which I don't but need to hike in that area, you can plan a hike in your own area.
It gives us something to work towards. To hike it is always nice to be in better hsape than we currently are. Som come on folfs, let's do this together.

Hey, Shoe, how about you? I am planning on coming to GA in the fall also to hike the trail so maybe that could even be part of this.....

Terri,

I'd love to do a hike with others from this group. I'm up for whatever others want to do. I can do an overnight backpacking trip or some day hikes. If anyone in the group has never backpacked but wants to, this might be a good place to start. My first backpacking trip was a one night out and it was a great learning experience, and I loved it. The only places in Virginia I've hiked have been around the Damascus area, but I'll be happy to go wherever. I live in northern NC, so not a really long drive for me.

I really hope others will jump in here and get interested in this. This is such a great way to get motivated to work at getting in shape. And, there are trails in Virginia to accommodate all fitness levels.

So, everyone please jump in here if you can and let's work with Terri to get something together that will work for us all. Sounds like a lot of fun. We can do this!
