Good news, my brother was discharged from the hospital last Friday late. We are staying aat a condo onthe beach. Our friends/his neighbors are coming down Friday to drive us from Florida to NE Tennessee where the yíall live on Saturday. So I will once again be without internet for an unknown time. I will be staying to help assist,y brother in his recovery. He will probably need further heart stents once heís stronger. We will know when he sees his cardiologist at home. I will be glad to get him home where I have support.
This has been just unreal. From talking and laughing in the elevator to ICU to coding upon arriving in ICU to heart cath to implanting an impala aka heart pump to kidney failure and dialysis to coming off the ventilator to transferring to a long term acute care hospital to throwing a piece of a clot from his foot to his lung to finally getting off dialysis, getting an IVC filter placed to stabilizing his a-fib to finally moving him to another hospital for inpatient rehab therapy to discharge. Itís been a rough nine weeks.
We are at a condo onthe beach in Florida until Saturday. We will be leaving to head to his house in NE Tennessee. Neither of us having winter clothes with us. His neighbors aka our travel friends will be here sometime onFriday.
Both of us have lost weight, weíre both tired and weary. When I get to his house I will not have internet access for the group.
Take care everyone. Happy Thanksgiving

A multitude of emotions, grief, sadness, happiness all meshed together as I think about Dalhousie's long life, He was included in so many of our activities. Truly he was part of the family, our baby...

Thatís awesome. Well, my trip wonít begin until next weekend. My brother started down to get me yesterday but unfortunately in Knoxville TN, a truck in front of him lost a drive shaft. There was no way to swerve and miss it. Tore a softball size hole in the tire and bent the rim. Thankfully he was able to cross the lanes without issues and get on the shoulder. So he has to get a new rim but since itís a holiday he canít order one till probably Tuesday. So heís supposed to be here next Saturday. Right now our thoughts are with our other brother on the Space Coast of Florida and our friends

Feeling better despite the hot and humid weather. It's like walking into a steaming sauna, lol. I did manage two short walks before it got too dark outside tonight. Felt great to be out walking again. My right hip is still hurting a little from twisting my leg a couple weeks ago trying to avoid a pot hole. It's better so I'm not limping, I just feel the twinges of pain when I walk. Hopefully that will work out itself by the time I get to my brother's house and then Florida.
My brother told me he got me a New Year's gift. A week on Sanibel Island. I've been wanting to go there for a long time, and now we'll be staying on it the end of January after our 4 weeks in New Smyrna Beach.
Hoping everyone is doing okay.

Thanks Marty. The memorial service was last night. I've been in a funk since Wednesday. It lifted tonight. I'm wide awake now. So much I want to get done but it's 2:15am and there's so much to do tomorrow besides this.

Thanks for sharing your walks and journeys with us. I really enjoy your photos.

It's been a trying week, another stomach virus. Finally over it, it was #5 since I got home.

Then my Aunt died. She's been like a Mother to me since mine died back in 1983. She was my late Dad's remaining sibling. Now they're all together again. Tomorrow night is the Memorial Service. I'm seriously dreading this. I know I'll break down since I haven't yet. My one brother (the one I travel with) drove in today to be here. I have one cousin from out of town that's coming in, that I know of. My Aunt had her angels, me and 4 of my cousins plus my other Aunt - her sister-in-law. I took care of my Aunt and Uncle for years, helping them with everyday things. Then when my Uncle got Alzheimer's I helped her a lot more. My son and I did so much to help. When I moved down here in 1988 it was to be closer to my Mom's parents and my Aunt and Uncle. I lived next door to her since 1988 to last year. My cousin's moved her closer to them. She had been in the nursing home since early February. It was supposed to be for rehab but she was never able to do anything. I personally think she had another heart attack. Then she had a stroke and a series of mini-strokes. She was going blind too.
I hate funerals. I hate memorial services. I will break down. Tomorrow night will be so hard.

Take care y'all.

As we left my friends house, I noticed the time and thought this would not be a pleasant drive, driving from one end to the other of Vancouver. An ah ha moment.. we have to drive past Burnaby Lake.. why not stop there to kill some time.. and the Costco is so close too. This way I can enjoy the birds and my wife can get her shopping fix in too. A win/win for all.

male Wood Duck

female Wood Duck

the mr and mrs Wood Duck

female Redwing Blackbird

male Redwing Blackbird. He came right at me, I think he was jealous because I was checking out his mate... no worries my little friend ...

Song Sparrow?

you old Coot you ! America Coot

So was Noni enjoying herself? What you think?
. Dance, dance as if there is no one watching... comes to mind

Me on the other hand am the more reserved one.

Costco.. went to buy a jug of milk only and to browse... left 146 dollars later...

Back on the road again... my wife is beginning to dose off, I notice in y preficial vision. Our route has a slight left turn to continue home or a stay in the right lane to go to the ferry terminal and Horseshoe Bay. I stay in the righthand lane... Noni all of sudden asks where are you going..? I guess she wasnít fully asleep ..
I had decided I wanted to take some more photos...

I see on the news that this ferry hit the terminal dock.. it must had happened just after I took this photo

Back on the road .. all weekends must end..

Monday was another day I packed full since I was off.
My friend who lives in Surrey, is moving back to California... we wanted to drop in say our goodbyes and hug and be on our way. He also was giving us a couple of his orchids that he has had for many years.
We we left the house around 9 am and returned 8:30 pm.
I should had left earlier , we just missed them as they had taken their daughter to the airport.
I thought they were picking her up. .. oh well I left a note saying we would be back in the afternoon. It was now 11:30.
My wife mentioned that she had seen a posting about tulips in Abbotsford.. 35 km away... so off we went.... well itís still a month early and so nothing to see .. drove around looking at the farms and mountains.. enjoying the day.
Then I got a thinking.. there is this all you can eat buffet in the next town over, Chillwack, another 30 km and we havenít been there since 8 years ago. My mouth begins to water.. so we went.
Now Iím over stuffed...
Time to head back to Surrey... took the slow route, stopping to take pictures.. finally we make it to our friends home. Spend about half an hour chatting then head towards home. Time is approximately 4:30. When we leave his home. We drive towards Vancouver, traffic is heavy. I donít want to be stuck in traffic as we get deeper into rush hour so we stop off at Burnaby Lake to see the ducks and do a quick shop at the near by Costco. Traffic is thinning an hour later.
Sail through Vancouver.. stopped at Horseshoe Bay just to take some phots.
Almost home... Noni asked if we should not drop in and say hello to Mom. I was going to do that on Tuesday, but Iím often tired after work especially the first day back, so it was better to do it now. We spent about half an hour with her. Finally we are home.. Dalhousie has been a good dog .
I have so many photos.. how to select and only post a few? Always my Delma!

bad marty... my first plate

Spring arrived here

Well Iíll stop here. Post again our stops at Burnaby Lake and Horseshoe Bay next time

That all you can eat buffet

Love the pictures Marty. I'm starting week 3 of this respiratory crud - I have bronchitis, pneumonia and a stomach virus too. I'm miserable. Wishing I felt like getting out in the warmer weather but I'm under doctors orders to stay in and keep resting.

Sunday afternoon went on a hike with the Squamish Environment Society to look for signs of spring. We walked the Woodpecker Trail...
I didnít see any woodpeckers...

Pacific Crest Trail
Done: 2,050.6 miles
To-Do: 639.0 miles

. Noni my wife exploring

me with pad and pencil taking notes

a piece of Alder Tree .. the inner wood turns red once it is exposed to the air. I was told that Natives would use this to dye things red .

Lilly of the Valley?

Stinging Nettles

I do believe this is Bleeding Heart

on the underside you can paint pictures as art .. it looks like someone engraved their initials to declare their love for all time...
( not Noni and I) .. not that we donít have love for all time.

. Life is returning

our Dalhousie stayed at home, I miss our outings together. But this guy was happy to be with his mom ...

good old faithful America Robin was the only bird I saw. I heard a Crow squawking and seen this Wood Duck house, but not the Wood Duck

Last week I was so sick.. a virus was going around my place of employment and sure enough I caught it regardless of all the hand washing I performed. I missed three days of work ... that will hurt next payday as I havenít built up any sick days ... Iím not even sure if I get a sick leave!
But that was last week..
Beginning tomorrow I get to work six days ... get to make up for one lost day...

Great job.

Iím dealing with a migraine. Exhausted from not sleeping well due to thunderstorms all night long. The ground is super saturated and weíve got more flooding and flood warnings. Iím tired of rain.

Oh my goodness, the sun is shining today. Friday and Saturday morning we had freezing rain and sleet. About .30 inches of ice coating everything! Yesterday was misty and cloudy and cold. Today the sun is shining. Alas that won't last long as we have about 4 systems coming through this week with locally heavy rain. The ground is already saturated from the last month's worth of heavy rain. Already getting flash flood and flood warnings in advance of the first storm. Mother Nature needs to make up her mind. I'm sick of rain and cold weather.

Other than lousy weather, my pain levels are through the roof and I don't feel like moving due to pain. Hoping it gets better with some warmer but wetter weather this week.

I'm doing my first hike of 2019 in the morning.

For the next few months, I plan on grinding hard, at work, at the gym, and on the trails, in hopes that I can take a month off this summer to hike Vermont's Long Trail. Ambitious? For sure. But can I do it? I hope so!

Honestly, I want to do this as a "trial run", to see if I have what it takes to do the Appalachian Trail in 2020 or 2021.

So to end the year 2018 the above is what I stepped. I began January 1st the Pacific Crest Trail. This was a good way to keep track and keep me honest. However I thought I would had been further on my way. But with knee pain and the Dalhousie not wanting to walk, I did not push myself.
I must somehow get myself back into walking daily.

To end the year we at least went outside .... getting me off the couch

Beautiful pictures - but I am sorry you are now unemployed.

I was fired at Christmas in 1996 - and my DH's life was saved when we found his Colon Cancer just in the nick of time. I was trying to save $$ on his meds and we went to the VA - they found the cancer the first day we went.

When a door closes, a window opens.

Beautiful pictures!!

Gave up crushing my meds. The one that needed to be crushed is not supposed to be crushed or broken so I'm just muddling along.
This weather is killing me slowly. I honestly don't know if I'll make it through 2019 at this rate. My body's muscles are getting so tight and tired. My body hurts head to toe 24/7. The doctor's can't offer any useful help since Medicare won't pay for what I truly need. So I'm just left to my own devices and left to suffer. Each day is a struggle. Since the major ice storm of 2009 I have had a difficult time each winter. Each winter it gets worse. The cold weather is getting here sooner and sooner. Up until the last week our temperatures have been well below normal. We've had rain, snow, and more rain with more in the forecast. If I had to stay here for the next few months, I don't know if I could handle it.
As it is, I leave Sunday with my brother to go back to his house in NE Tennessee. We will leave for New Smyrna Beach, Florida the following Thursday late night/early Friday morning. It will be late afternoon close to dark when we get there. We usually find some nice diversion about half way down and get out and walk around the place and stretch and get some sunshine. Last December it was an old fort someplace in Georgia. Another time it was one of South Carolina's coastal islands. So we shall see. We will be in NSB until January 26th. When we check out we're heading further south to Pompano Beach, Florida for a week before returning to his house for another week. Then I'll be home mid February.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year. I'll try to get online when I get to Florida as my brother doesn't have internet at his house. Take care.

Itís frustrating because the pill I need to crush cannot be crushed. I gave up. I just drink a lot of water. One pill at a time. Most of my pills are smaller

Love the photos Marty! Thanks for sharing them with us.

Today's a wonderful day outside. I've been taking the opportunity for a couple walks around the neighborhood. It was close to 70 degrees and mostly sunny out. The wind has a chill but that's to be expected since a cold front or two are rolling our way. Not looking forward to those cold days. Counting down to my trip: 3 weeks to my brother's house in NE Tennessee and in 4 weeks I will be on the beach walking again.

Thanks everyone for being here. Sorry I've been away from my desktop computer for too long. on the phone app I can't do much of anything. I apologize for not being here more.

I'm trying to cram in a lot in the next 3 weeks before I leave. I leave December 23rd. I'm hoping that the condo in Florida will have internet access. I'll have my phone and Ipad with me so hopefully I'll be able to keep in touch. I'll be home mid February.

Still under the weather. Trying to allow my body to heal. Went to the gym yesterday so I got in my 10,000 steps.

Our first snow fell overnight and we woke up to snow on the ground. We have a winter warning watch starting 3pm tomorrow through Thursday night. Weíre suppsed to get one tenth of an inch of ice under up to 8 inches of snow. Looks like my doctor appointment Thursday will be rescheduled as I canít rise another bad fall. Two in six months just about did me in. Iím still feeling them both.

Hope everyone has a great week

Camp season is finished, I have received my last pay and now I am unemployed.
What does the future hold? There is much uncertainty.....

I will get back into the swing of posting as my life adjusts, but right now Iím burnt out

Looks like a great time Marty. I can see you both enjoyed yourselves.

Iím celebrating my 64th birthday in New Smyrna Beach Florida today. Iím here until the 29th. Enjoying the ocean breeze and warm temperatures. At 9:30am it was 88 with a heat index of 98 already. Enjoying the beach walks now that Iíve recovered from the 14 hour drive. Whew! We had to detour over 110 miles out of our way to avoid Hurricane Florence. Our normal drive through South Carolina and Georgia was detoured because of hurricane, tropical storm and storm surge warnings and mandatory evacuations. I got sick after we got here Friday. I think lack of sleep messed with my past concussions made me dizzy as all get out. I took my motion sickness medsand ate something came back to the condo and just passed out from exhaustion. I strained a muscle in my left shoulder carrying in luggage and such.
Today I have a migraine. We have a 50%chance of rain. We have red and purple flags flying for the ocean rip currents and jelly fish are starting to drift ashore. Also the dreaded love bugs are here too.
Take care everyone. I finally have WiFi for my iPad so I can check in. Take care. Have a great weekend

Home now, what an awesome five day getaway.
Not a lot of walking but that doesnít matter. A lot of eating though, that might not be a good thing!

I understand you wanting to be out doing your walking. My allergies and asthma are terrible right now. I canít go outside for a few minutes without problems. To top it off the extreme heat advisories are back. Heat and breathing problems definitely donít mix.
I leave Saturday for NE Tennessee and my brotherís house. His air and weather are usually much better so I look forward to walking there.
Then on September 14th we leave for New Smyrna Beach Florida for two weeks with friends. We will also be able to see our youngest brother who lives not far from where we stay.

If only I could actually do all this walking along the roads and trails.
But No! Most of this is all done working in a small kitchen.

Pacific Crest Trail
Done: 1,157.4 miles
To-Do: 1,532.1 miles

Victoria to Nanaimo is 88 miles. I have six miles to walk to reach Nanaimo and to continue on the Transcanada Trail.

Ladysmith is 55 miles from Victoria .....

I still have to walk 92 miles to reach Campbell River .. and only eight days before I begin the mini vacation there

I hope I remember correctly.. and this train is in Ladysmith.
I love trains. Iíll stop and take photos whenever I can. At this location I was also looking for another geocache

Hike #2 Victoria to Campbell River BC
114.3 more miles to walk to reach my first goal.

Today I was off. Iíll take it and make the most of it. This morning after my wife woke up.. I get up everyday whether I work or not around 6 am. I asked if she would like to go to the mall. Park Royal to be more exact. She was ready in a flash.... I must mention the mall is over a hour away from Camp highway driving. You know what I mean .... itís not just going down the road ordeal.
We walked around the mall for a while, ate at the food court spent money buying clothes and then headed home. Did a stop ocean side to marvel at the views and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Continuing on our way home stopped once more at the Sea to Sky Gondola and had a quick walk about and a coffee.
My relief cook was cooking on the BBQ supper for 20 staff/ campers that still remained at camp and I wanted to get back for supper .. so time to end the day and go home.
Iím feeling rested and happy...
10 days of summer camp remain ...

Up we go from Sea to Sky

Geocaching... the only reason Iím here is to seek and find a hidden geocache.

Geocaching is where you use million dollar Statlights to go seek Tupperware that is hidden. Itís the thrill of the hunt .. the find. Using a gps or a smartphone with coordinates you go out looking ... and your gps will take you to places where you never would had stopped at before or even known existed

#2 Hiking Canada
Victoria to Campbell River = 164 miles
Since August 10 when I began I have walked 30 miles .
This means I need to walk 134 miles yet to reach Campbell River.

Once upon a time I lived just a few miles from Chemainus in a little town called Crofton.
Crofton I still remember like it was yesterday waking up and looking out the window the first morning after moving in and seeing this Wall. It wasnít there before. It magically appeared over night. Iím smiling as I remember this.. I had nevered lived next to an ocean before ... over night an ocean liner ship came into port and docked. It was huge and from my window it looked like a wall.
Another morning ... I wake up to have a crab walking across my bedroom floor.. How - Where did that come from. The day before I was out walking along the beach collecting shells. Some how in one of my empty shells had become home to my crab who now was heading back to the ocean.

Between Crofton and Chemainus there is a beautiful warmish river that people would tube.
This has been the only time I have ever drifted down a river on a huge tractor tire. Awesome, memories.

Iím not done with memories yet... at the camp where I worked the theatre actors of the Chemainus Theatre would come and practice at the Camp. Staff would often get free tickets to the theatre. I love the theatre .

Chemainus is a beautiful place to walk around and look at the murals .. my photos donít do them justice.
I also remember going to this little diner just on a side street that had the best clam chowder I have ever eaten. ( I wonder if it is still there? Probably Not so long ago )
