Well, Virginia had flooding the week before we went so it wasn't exactly dry, but it was beautiful. We camped in Mathews Arm Campground instead of staying in the backcountry. And we had one long hike where our map wasn't exactly representative (the first "half" of the hike as judged by the distances on the map took two hours and the second "half" of the loop took four, so we were very grateful for our headlamps since we got out of the woods more than an hour after sundown. Saw lots and lots of young black bears bounding around at sundown though, which was pretty charming. I still think Shenandoah is the most beautiful place on Earth. And since my boyfriend used to live in DC and we drove through there on the way, I also got to add a new National Park to my list.

Did you go on the hike? If so, how was it?

I have hiked Shenandoah before - I think it's the most beautiful place on earth. I particularly love it in the autumn when the falls dry up and you can just walk down the rock faces.

Hoping you'll have a wonderful hiking experience there. I've never been in that part of Virginia at all so I'm not sure what you'll be up against.

Thanks for replying. Looks like you're not alone in that, so we'll just see how it goes. How bad can it be?

I've never done any hiking in Virginia, so I don't have any info to help you. Sorry. I hope you have a great time!

I'm just starting to plan a backpacking trip to Shenandoah and looking for advice. Actually, it may end up being day hikes from Mathews Arm Campground - that's part of what I'm trying to figure out. I and my favorite New Yorker will either fly to Dulles and get a shuttle ride to the route 614 trailhead and the base of Little Devil's Stairs and then have three days of packing until we get picked up at the Thompson Hollow Trailhead. Or, since it looks like driving will be just as fast as flying and whole lot cheaper, we may just drive in to Mathews Arm Campground and do day hikes, still including Little Devil's Stairs and Overall Run Falls, before driving ourselves back home.

I'm curious to hear others' experiences with hiking shuttle services. Anyone you'd recommend in the north section of the park?

I'm not clear on whether we're allowed to use a back country camping permit in an area so dense with established trails.

That favorite New Yorker of mine is an experienced hiker, but hasn't done a strenuous hike with an overnight pack in many years. Is the rock scramble up Little Devil's Stairs going to be more work than fun for him? (Another close friend of mine took his now wife on her first ever backpacking trip along a section of the AT in Shenandoah decades ago and didn't think to warn her that she had to break in her hiking boots first and she has never gone camping again - I don't want to risk anything like that!!!)

Eager to hear what wisdom others in this group have to share.
