Spend some time finding small things to be happy with. For me tonight it was a glass of ice coffee with caramel sugar free creamer.

I just read GINA's blog and it is a wonderful "picture" of what life was like when the pandemic started, what it's like now, and what it may be like in the future. I think it's very valuable information and I would love Gina's permission to share it on my Facebook page with friends and family. That may not be something she wants me to do, so I will wait and see what she posts here next time. Maybe she will address how "far" she wants to share her thoughts and writings. Gina, I will definitely understand if you'd like to keep your writings on SparkPeople only.

So many people are scared and saying that "things will never be the same again." They may not be for a good while (our experts here say a year to 18 months for a vaccine, if we're lucky), so we're looking at some time. It's helps to remember other times of crisis and how people made it through and slowly began to thrive once more.

Hugs to all. emoticon emoticon

emoticon emoticon Hi friends!

GINA, the Palm Sunday gathering really did sound wonderful. Itís great the way people are still finding ways to connect and share special times together. Several of my Facebook friends had ďWatch partiesĒ tonight on Facebook where they were watching their various Palm Sunday services. My husband is responsible for recording the sermon and music and getting it posted on our church website. *I hope so much that your sonís covid test is negative. Iím sure heís excited to begin his new job. *I admire you for eating so many fruits and veggies. I eat veggies, but not many fruits. Iím going to order some next time at the grocery store. I wanted something sweet so badly on Saturday (the first day of the 5% Challenge) that I ate a little apple that had been in my fruit drawer for a couple of months and also some prunes from the back of the frig behind the milk!
emoticon

SPARKLING, thanks for sharing the lovely graphics! I set the alarm on my phone last night so I could pray and, like Kathryn, I did feel more at peace afterward. Iím praying for the patients, medical staff and the whole world every day, but just knowing the whole world was involved at one time gave me a warm comforting feeling.
emoticon

KATHRYN, I will tell Katie what you said and Iím sure sheíll appreciate it. It is hard when you ďmiss-hearĒ words and phrases. Itís a struggle, but she tries to find ways to compensate. I think I have a bit of an auditory processing disorder, too, because I sometimes get the words to songs wrong when others don't. Also, like Katie, when there are competing noises, I find it hard to hear clearly and have to work hard to ďgetĒ what people are saying. Sometimes it's just impossible. *I hope you enjoyed your nap. There have been times in my life when I would eat to try to stay awake and sometimes when Iíd take a nap, I wouldnít need to snack so much. *I hope you and Ron enjoyed your movie.
emoticon

Holding on to faith and hope, especially tightly these next few weeks. The world will make it through this - we just have to remember weíre all in this together.
emoticon emoticon

Hugs, love, and blessings to All!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Miller I think I have that hearing problem we were talking about. Tell Katie we have something else in common and I admire her for not letting it get in her way while working.

Gina your church service sounded lovely I can just see the palms and other branches waving in the air as you all sang.

Kris hope all is well with you and yours?

IN Janice how is Buddy? I hope he was just tired

Sparkling I did the emoticon and felt at emoticon emoticon

I slept good last night but still did something I don't usually do I took a nap. Hubby took one at the same time.so it worked out. I am not tired this evening. I learned something about my body, I now need afternoon naps. I was before becoming tired by 4:00pm. I usually go to sleep about 10:00pm and get up at 6:00am. Now I have all this engery I think I will watch a movie with hubby after dinner tonight.

Today our fellowship had an online gathering for Palm Sunday. via Zoom. We each brought palm leaves or anything equivalent and waved during the singing. It was very nice and always good to connect with people from different parts of the world.

My son moved to Dongguan in the south of China for his work, but has to get a covid test before he can be allowed to enter the factory to inspect goods. The earliest he can get a test done is Wednesday, so he is a bit impatient.

Eating lots more veggies and fruits. I am trying to cut back so feeling hungry all the time, but I know that will pass. Have a good day everyone!

emoticon Hi all!

GINA, I started the 5% Challenge today, too. Itís kind of exciting to be doing something new that Iíve never done before! *I hope we all reach our goals!! *Thanks so much for mentioning Katie. We are a bit concerned. I appreciate your advice about social distancing at home if one has been exposed to the virus. *Your suggestion of using the filters that are used for vacuums is a great one - I never would have thought of that. Iíve seen several videos on Facebook of people showing how to make a face mask with cloth and no sewing, which comes in good for me, as I gave my sewing machine away years ago. *I am so glad that your daughter is no longer working in a covid ward - thatís the best news Iíve heard all week!!! She, and other medical staff, are still in my prayers. *I find it very moving that China had a national day of mourning. I think that is very sweet and really would reaffirm to all that youíre in it together.
emoticon

JANICE, Iím a little worried about Buddy. Do you think he wouldnít move because he was just tired or do you think he might be sick? Either way, I hope he feels better soon! You really got a workout carrying him home. I know what you mean about realizing how many lbs you once carried - I often tell myself when Iím taking my walks that I took off and put back on 60 lbs, which is equivalent to twelve 5-lb bags of sugar. Imagine how hard it would be to carry around twelve 5 lb bags of sugar or flour all day, but yet thatís what I do. I have to try hard and you are an inspiration with losing 20 lbs!! That is so awesome!!!
emoticon

KATHRYN, Iím proud of you for exercising!!! I have to say that since weíve become ďexercise buddies,Ē I do feel more responsible for getting my exercise in than I did before!!
emoticon

SPARKLING, what a pretty graphic of the earth! Thanks very much for telling us about the world-wide night of prayer - I didnít know about it. I think 7:45 PST for me would be 10:45. I will definitely participate!!!

Gina lovely cherry blossoms.

Cold this morning raining. I did not sleep well last night but that is not keeping me from using the peddler for 15 minutes 3x today. I think exercise is very important.

Had Buddy out for his walk. We were 2 blocks from home, when he just layed down and would not move. I picked him up and carried him most of the way home. He weighed 19 lbs and just think, I used carry that around with me all the time until I lost it.

Janice, congratulations on the 20 pound loss! Fantastic!

My weight is up, I think it is worrying about my daughter. So the 5% Challenge starts today and I am really ready for it. Gotta stop my bad habits.

Miller, I really hope Katie is fine. I think if you live with others who go out it is a good idea to even practice social distancing in the house. My cousin is in the same boat, her daughter was exposed and they are living together at home. Lots of hand washing and disinfecting going on, plus they sit apart.

There are some good mask patterns online that you can make at home. They have small pockets to put in a filter which really increases the effectiveness. Vacuum cleaner filters cut to fit work well for that, you just remove the piece of filter each day and discard, then wash the mask. i messaged my daughter about trying that with her DIY masks.

Good news for my daughter, they ended up closing the covid ward where she works as there is not enough equipment for safety. So now she is working but in another ward. I feel relief.

Today was a national day of mourning for China. At 10 am all sirens in the city and car horns sounded for 3 minutes to honor those who have passed away, and those who are fighting for the health of others. It was a way of unifying everyone, and realising we are fighting together.

emoticon Hi to all!!!

I was able to walk farther on Friday than I have done in about five years - it hurt, but I was so proud of myself because I didn't think I could do it, but I did!!!
emoticon emoticon

Katie (DD) learned today that someone at a pet hospital location where she worked a week ago has tested positive for COVID-19. She doesn't yet know whether that person also worked on the day she was there. It's not her usual hospital location - she was just filling in for someone. She's going to try to get more information from her Project Manager. She's very worried about transmitting it to me and Randy (DH) because we both have underlying conditions. She even talked about quitting her job because she has to work right in other worker's faces when they are working together to restrain dogs for medical procedures. They do wear masks, but they're not the good masks. We want her to keep working.

I bought some bandanas from Amazon to make into face masks now that the CDC is recommending everyone wear some type of cloth mask. They made it clear that they want to keep the medical grade masks for the medical workers and I agree wholeheartedly. They are on the "front lines," risking their lives to help the sick and they need protection. We owe them a debt of gratitude and I've been praying for them daily. I also wrote another email to the president, though I'm not sure if it will do much good. One can only hope. Gina's daughter is one of those brave nurses.
emoticon

I hope everyone is finding joy in small things every day. Wishing love, peace, and good health to all!!!

Finished my first online home school class with my granddaughter. Language arts! It was fun. She even asked for more when it was time to quit but I had to go. Always best to quit before they are bored.

I went for the most beautiful walk yesterday. Here are some photos of the parks in bloom.

4-2-2020 I had a chance to walk HOURS, yesterday, food Costco. Felt great! I WAS, as always VERY protected.Costco is taking it VERY seriously, too! Finally! Fewer people allowed in at a time, plastic barriers around cashiers, sanitizer wipes etc. Didn't go out today, even around neighborhood. LUCY is limping & I don't want to hurt her more.

I've been working most of the day on computer. There are several people writing a history book of CA puppet theaters. Of course ours will be in it. So I've been helping get some photos & facts &&&& to help out.

It's 5 pm & I have been here almost all day! I'm ready to move! Love you all, stay safe! (Remember when we would say, "Have a good day"? Seems years ago!"

GINA, thank God your son was there to shove you to safety!!! emoticon I hope you and your granddaughter will enjoy "schooling" together. I'm sure it will be a great help to your daughter.

Thanks, KRIS and GINA, for your info and thoughts on masks. Yes, Gina, the US experts have pretty much made it clear that the only reason we aren't ALL wearing masks is because there aren't any. I think they probably knew from the beginning that we should all be wearing masks, but knew there weren't enough, so instead said, "You only need one if you're sick." Today they said on the news that some experts believe you don't have to be around a sneezing, coughing person, but that just talking to someone can transmit the virus and that it can last in the air. We ALL need masks, but the US government has failed us in that, too, as well as in so many ways. I wrote another email to the President at the White House last night, but of course, no good will come of it. Sorry to be such a downer, but it's hard to stay cheerful with such total ineptness. I have always had a policy of not making political comments on social media, but this is life and death, so I find it hard to stay silent.

That said, I wish peace to all the world, as well as healing and comfort. I hope we can all find joy even in the smallest of things.

Hugs to all. emoticon

A few thoughts on masks. There has been a lot of back and forth about this between the WHO advisories and the US CDC. One of the main reasons masks were not encouraged, as they have admitted, is that if the public general public starts buying there would not be enough for the medical workers.

According to Anthony Fauci, the head of the U.S. Covid advisory team, he said that when worn properly they offer about 50% protection, but in his words, "50% is better than nothing".. The key is in "used properly". We have been drilled here in how to take them off. You must assume it is contaminated, and only take it off by the handles, then dispose of it. Or if it is a cloth mask, then wash it. A scarf could easily pick up the virus, and you would be handling it, wrapping and unwrapping, so it wouldn't be the best.

The CDC is reconsidering their take on masks, as they realise the statistics show that the countries using them have less cases. There are patterns of how to sew your own that conform to CDC standards that can be found online. One of the benefits of wearing a mask is that it can help you not to touch your mouth and nose as much, and prevent you from easily spreading the virus if you are sick but don't know it. It's a little bit like a condom. Used properly, they do the job. Worn improperly, then you could find yourself with unwanted consequences.

But as far as prevention and protection, the absolute best is to keep at least 6 feet from others and wash your hands after touching anything outside of your house. Disinfect surfaces after coming inside if you touch things. Those are not difficult to do, and it will go a long way in keeping you safe.

Posted another blog today about making it through the rough times during isolation. It's good to be able to share those things, it makes me feel like it wasn't for nothing.

Today we finally got the masks off at the shipping company. Each day the price goes up and I am afraid they will block shipping. Even DHL could not give an estimated time of arrival as there are so few flights out of China now.

.Had a misadventure along the way though. My son went with me to make sure nothing got lost in translation, and I am glad he did. As we were crossing the street to catch a cab a car came out of nowhere and came within inches of hitting me. My son saw it and shoved me out of the way. It was like a movie. I am so grateful but was shaking afterwards. Gosh, as if we didn't have enough drama in our lives. emoticon

Talked to my older daughter in Japan. She is in the military there, a JAG, and working fro home while trying to homes school her daughter, can you imagine? So Grandma is now going to help with classes! I start Friday. I still have to keep up with my at-home work here, so it will for sure keep me busy. I am looking forward to helping teach her though. We will use Zoom and make the best of it.

Had a big salad with yogurt dressing and cheddar cheese for dinner. I have allowed far too many treats in my life these last days while my daughter in the U.S was waiting for her test results. So I am trying to swing back to the opposite extreme and push veggies and fruits.

Have a good day!

Kathryn - no - wrapping a scarf around your face/neck would NOT work, and in fact those with actual scientific knowledge (not just someone who claims he "knows these things" BECAUSE his Uncle was a Professor at a University) - this is what the REAL experts say about masks and makeshift masks for the general population. Apart from the fact that they don't provide the level of protection that is required for Covid-19, they give a false sense of security, PLUS you are going to handle it to take it off. Your best line of defense is to keep your distance and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds in soapy water (first action) or using an alcohol-based sanitizer (2nd choice and best one for when out.)
Your CDC says for the general public to only wear masks IF they are sick. IF, however YOU have respiratory issues or in a group that is more vulnerable to serious side-effects, then a mask may be helpful - however the scarf wouldn't really.

Here is a link from the World Health Organization - Watch the 2 videos on this, too:
www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/nov
el
-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/R>when-and-how-to-use-masks

This is also from the World Health Org. for me advice to medical staff, but I couldn't transfer it here (far too long and would take quite a bit to find it)

"For asymptomatic individuals, wearing a mask of any type is not recommended. Wearing medical masks when they are not indicated may cause unnecessary cost and a procurement burden and create a false sense of security that can lead to the neglect of other essential preventive measures. For additional information, see Advice on the use of masks in the community, during home care and in healthcare settings in the context of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak (8)."

I'm pleased that you have a regular caregiver. I WAS a caregiver in peoples homes for a few years and some of them weren't happy that prior to my going to them they were getting different ones frequently. They tended to worry about who was coming; will they come; will they be any good; will I like them, etc. etc. etc. I tended to stay with them for the long haul LOL!

emoticon Hi to all.

KRIS, I'm so glad New Zealand did the right thing and was well prepared. I wish I could say the same for us here. The news last night was devastating.

KATHRYN, that is great news that you have a regular caregiver now and you like her. I might have to go to the store today, too. I don't have a mask or a bandanna to wrap around my face - I think I have an old long knitted scarf, but that's it. I'll keep social distance and carry an antibacterial wipe with me.

Love, peace, and joy to all. Have a good day & night. emoticon emoticon

Kris so sorry I am late but anyway emoticon Glad you had a good time by yourself. Your turkey looked so yummy. I am glad you were able to get so many meals.

Gina we are all doing our share of stress eating. For me it was junk food at the beginning of the month when we had one case in our county last I heard it ead 144. Sorry your daughter got sick but glad it is not the dreaded virus. Good that you could get some masks to her. Our leader said tonight wrap a scarf around your face. I guess that would work. Maybe wear my Native American kerchief over my nose and mouth would look better than this mask I have been wearing all month. I am learning to not touch my face when my hands are not clean. I am carrying Hand sanitizer with me.where ever I go and using it often. And when ever I get near a sink washing my hands.

We had good news today...we have a new regular VA caregiver now. And what makes it good is she is one of our subs so we know her.and like her. She is a good worker and good to be around. Our county caregiver is taking me to the store tomorrow. Part of me is stressing about giving and having social distance
I am up late and wonder if that is why I can't sleep. I need to stop worrying I know I will be okay tomorrow.

Miller - Our Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern, very wisely said right at the very beginning, that the moment the Covid-19 appeared in NZ as a "community transmitted" rather than Kiwis returning to NZ with it, that she would put us into lock-down. That is exactly what happened. The first person and we went into lock-down. I would guess that has significantly reduced the impact that we would have felt, especially with hospital admissions. Our stocks of a lot of protective gear has also been way higher re head of population in the beginning too. I read how many surgical masks we had, and how many New York City had - they are twice our population and we had about twice the amount of masks ... by unit, not by head of population. That's not to say that if the proverbial hits the fan, we won't suffer a shortage.

Gina - your Parmesan roasted veggies sound soooo yumm.

SPARKLING, I love your idea of taking one hour at a time!! That is very wise. It reminded me that my mother used to say that - she often told me to take things one hour at a time, or even one minute at a time if an hour was too much.

Your dream sounds like a dream-come-true and lots of fun!!! emoticon

I love the picture you posted. It's so lovely, peaceful, comforting, and happy!!!

emoticon 3-31-2020 The last day of March, I'm still wondering what happened to Christmas! emoticon Been a strange for all of us, right????? I'm staying balanced & happy & healthy, how about you? Taking my life 1 hour at a time. Seems to work for me!
emoticon I had a dream last night I was performing at the BIG art's center, it is closed of course, but SO fun thinking of doing it, there! In my waking life, I would have gone to the center & applied to perform there, in the 1990's, but way beyond my life, right now. I love being entertained, even if it's in my dreams!

Hi all!

KRIS, itís great you got so many servings from your turkey and trimmings. I love the way you cook ahead and always have a freezer stocked with healthy homemade meals! *How ingenious of the high school teacher in NZ to make full face shields with the 3D printers.

GINA, Iím sorry youíve had such a hard time trying to get the PPE supplies mailed to your daughter and Iím so happy you have found a way. Iím very sorry she was so upset, but glad she had you to talk with. Iíve seen many nurses here being interviewed on TV and they are simply exhausted and at the end of their ropes and havenít even reached the peak yet. I wish our government would do their job and help them. She really IS brave and you gave her the perfect definition of bravery. As you said, bravery is being scared, but still doing what is needed. God bless her. Iím going to keep praying for her and for all hospital workers. *I think a lot of us feel like eating and eating these days - how could we not with all that is going on? As you said, itís vegetables and they are so good for you. Much better than the chocolate candy Iíve been eating. Iím participating in the 5% Challenge for the first time and this is ďpractice weekĒ so Iíve been eating better. I plan to leave the chocolate & sugar behind and stop relying on them for comfort.

Have a good day all.

I spent the better part of today trying to find a way to ship the kilo of masks I gathered for my daughter in the US. It is really hard to get things shipped now. as hey have drastically cut down the number of planes flying out of here. Finally found a man who works for a company and they will put them on his company's declaration. I have to pay, but the agent will ship them, so that is great. Tomorrow morning I am going to go get it done, and taking my son for back-up in case I hit a wall of communication. His Chinese is fluent and mine is kind of meh.

IMiller,.my daughter was crying her eyes out. I told her she is brave and she said she doesn't feel brave. I told her being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared. It just means that you show up in spite of it, and put one foot in front of the other and keep going.

I think we are all brave these days.

Roasted a large tray of mixed veggies and sprinkled it with parm cheese and some whole wheat toast cubes for dinner. It was good and plentiful. I feel like eating and eating these days, which I know is stress, but at least it is veggies. I had brussels sprouts, onion, zucchini, and tomato spritzed with olive oil.

Have a good day!

Thank you guys for your birthday wishes. I really enjoyed my time with Me, Myself and I emoticon I had Turkey for dinner again tonight, but not the same veggies. I managed to get 16 serves out of it, so the rest is with gravy, in the freezer. I cooked up the carcass and got nearly 400g of meat off it, and made a yummy soup with some veggies and rice and kidney beans, plus I put the plentiful remains of the Cranberry/Orange gravy with it and a little chili powder and good lug of lemon juice. It is YUMMM. I got 6 serves with that, too, plus 2 lunches. I am very happy with the number of meals.

Renia - your Fur Babies are gorgeous. Is Zaba a young female? I had figured Nogi had Griffon in the breeding.

Gina - WHAT a worry for you and your daughter. I am keeping her in my thoughts for coming through this safely.

In NZ a High School teacher who works with 3D Printers managed to grab 4 from his school and get them home before the lock-down began. He has been making the Full Face shields with the (I assume) plastic crown, and has managed to get others on board, too, and they have been pumping out quite a few. NZ doesn't have the shortage that most places appear to have had, but then SO FAR, there have only been about 25 hospitalized.

Sparkling - I saw that Dr Zeus-like thing a earlier on. I think it is a brilliant way to get kids wanting to learn.

Miller - I luv your pic's. They're cute.

GINA, thanks for getting in touch. I'm so relieved to read that your daughter posted negative for the Coronavirus. She certainly is a brave woman to work in a COVID unit. I've been praying for all the health care workers. The US is not prepared for this - at all - and I just heard this morning that if we do Everything Right, we may have 100,000 to 200,000 deaths. It's just so tragic that we don't have the protective equipment our medical workers need. I'm so glad you were able to get some PPE to her - that is good news. They are heroes and deserve better than what our government is giving them. I will pray for your daughter's safety and health.

Hi everyone. Sorry for being missing in action these last days. My daughter, who is a nurse in the U.S., was sick and being tested for covid., so it was a stressful time for us all. Thankfully she tested negative, and we were all so relieved.

But she is working in a covid unit and hearing more about the shortage of masks has made me desperate to get supplies to her. So i rounded up about 3 months supply- mostly surgical masks, but also about 12 of the better quality N-95's. She had masks in her ward but nothing for when she was walking around in the hospital outside of her ward, so I was pretty desperate to get things to her. DHL costs about $80 US per kilo, but it seems to be the only reliable option at this point. At least it gave me some positive way to help her, and through my nervous energy into it.

In the meantime, I located on Facebook a group of volunteers who are sewing masks in her city. So I contacted them, and then put her in touch with them, so tomorrow they will supply here with cloth sewn masks! Wonderful people to help in that way. She can't use them in the ward but they will at least offer some protection when walking through the hospital. until the ones I am sending get to her.

All that has been pretty exhausting, especially while we waited for her test results. But I am so thankful she is OK. She is a brave girl, but it is hard on her. I am thankful she is OK.

That turkey looks good. Iím taking the opportunity to check out the recipes I get sent in emails. Found some great ones and I have the ingredients to try them out. Last night was sumac chicken, really easy and delicious! As I write this post, Iím pedalling on my WonderCore and both dogs decided to come for a cuddle, so I had to stop to give them attention and collapsed in giggles as they both snuggled...itís difficult to pedal and cuddle these two at the same time!

I've had a nice day today. It started with a video-call from my son and son-in-law in Vancouver BC for my birthday. I had ordered bananas from my little local dairy last night. She delivered them to my deck (not allowed inside and have to stay at least 2 metres apart) today. Then my neighbour popped over to see if I was o.k. She stayed on the deck and it was nice having a wee chat.I cooked the Turkey I had bought at Xmas time (on a really big price reduction) and made a Cranberry & Orange Gravy to go with it. It was all really yummm. The turkey was very juicy and tender.

Tomorrow I will be slicing it up and freezing it in single-serves, along with the gravy, and will also keep the dark meat and a couple slices of the breast out for lunches.

The fun for me was taking a walk to the drug store and found some TP in my brand. Tomorrow I want to go to the supermarket and hope to find.some eggs. I do not know why there was a run on eggs.

Glad you got in your walk, Kathryn, even if it did rain. We walked the dogs along the local vineyards. They love it there and we get a healthy half hour in the sunshine ( mostly).

This morning started with a different workout - sweeping and mopping floors for 90 minutes, phew!

We had a good day today - we spent time in the garden, clearing away dog poo, weeds and some passionflower roots that we had cut back, hubby sanded a drawer from my dressing ta le so that it shuts properly ( after several months, but thatís ok), the dogs have been walked and Iím about to put away the rest of the collection of plastic tubs that we sorted out yesterday. One of our nearest friends rang and we had a great chat too - he is looking after a Great Dane so we have lots in common; I also make cakes for him now and again - last year for his birthday and also for Christmas...

Have a lovely, peaceful Saturday evening, everyone!

RENIA, I'm so sorry the lockdown has been extended. It is probably for the best, however, and I really wish our government would do the same nation-wide. I believe it's the only way to stop the spread. Take care and hang in there!!

I have been in Shelter-in-place since the start of the month and am finely feeling the need to get out for a long walk. Staying away from parks and busy streets. That is I am going if it is not raining. If it is I will just stay in my room one more day.

OK, Kris, I won't go to his home, anymore! I am VERY careful. Today I am delivering our jobs. That is how we make a living. IF their offices are closed, I will take to FED EX. I AM a delivery person. I WILL be very MORE careful, thx for advise!

Love the peanut holder!!!!l! Love you all! I'm off to it!
PS.... Yesterday I took Lucy to vet, I didn't go in. I called them to say she was there. They unlocked the door, I put her in & they locked it again. I was under my mask & gloves. I put hand sanitizer on the OUTSIDE of mask & gloves, too. IF she didn't need this test, believe me, she wouldn't have gotten it! But tests came back BETTER! Her pancreas is better, now! We thought she maybe dyeing of cancer. But results show she is doing MUCH better, with new drug!!!! When I got her back, I put hand sanitizer on her coat, just in case! Then called them & paid over the phone, YIKES! But happy she is better!

THX everyone for your advise! We ARE listening as best we can! emoticon

emoticon Hi to all!!!

GINA, I heard on the news about China closing it's borders - I think that is wise. I do hope all the students returning home were able to get back before this (smart to quarantine them, too). *I love the idea of everyone cooking a dish and sharing how you did it with each other. Sounds like fun. *I wish I could say our government is handling things well, but they are not. We just weren't prepared, as a nation, for something like this. Things are getting very bad in some of our hospitals in the larger cities and my heart breaks for them.

KRIS, I think New Zealand is very smart to lock everything down. I wish we would do that here, but it's being done in only some states and only some counties in some states. It's crazy - we need to lock down the whole country, but some are afraid of the economy collapsing and having another Great Depression.

Still, we will make it through. We'll do what we can to stay safe and that helps others stay safe, as well.

Big Hugs to All!!! emoticon

Sparkling - I'm surprised that you are allowed to visit others, even if only up to 9 people. Are they also allowed to visit another 9 people? That is how the infection is given a chance to spread. Here we are NOT allowed to visit anyone.

They are constantly telling us that we have to stay in our 'bubble' and that is ONLY our own household. For me, that means I am here by myself for 4 weeks, however that is no big deal. We can go for walks in our own area, but if we meet anyone on the footpath, we have to stay at least 2 metres away. We can't go to the beach other than walk there and go for a walk only. Playgrounds are off limits. One guy found driving a few minutes to a forestry was not allowed. A guy on a paddle board found the same thing, as did someone who decided to go fishing. If anything happens it is putting rescuers at risk. We are allowed to get the bus or take our car to get our groceries. ONE person per family allowed in the shop. Hairdressers and Butchers are NOT classed as essential services. Supermarkets sell meat, and no-one died of a lack of a haircut. We are allowed to go out re Medical and Pharmacy, but if any other reason, we can be fined, and a couple people have been caught already.

I DID talk to my neighbour for a while today. He was on his side of the right-of-way and I was on my side. I think he will get bored because he is used to being out all the time. He is rushing in to do all the chores he can, all at once, instead of pacing himself emoticon

Hi everyone! So happy to hear that the blogs have been a help. We are all in this together no matter which part of the world we are in!

Late last night it was announced China closed their borders to any foreigners. The main reason was that even though they had controlled all the cases domestically, more and more were arriving on flights each day - over 450 positive imported cases so far. In our city we have had no new cases for weeks, but just last week 9 new cases sprung up from people arriving from the US, UK and Switzerland. Thankfully all new arrivals are quarantined at government sites, so they stopped people from mingling with the population. But closing the border seems the only way to keep more and more from arriving. Most of the returnees are not foreigner nationals however, 70% are Chinese students returning home because they are scared.

One of my friends has started a cook-off challenge, naming a different food each Friday and then people posting on a group chat their version of cooking it. This week it is pasta. It has been fun and a way to keep everyone's mind on happy things.

I am glad to hear you are all staying home, staying safe and washing hands. Hugs to you all!

Yes! Kris, thank you!

emoticon 3-26-2020 My hair guy's shop closed. But he invited me to his home (we can visit people with up to 9 people) & he did my hair last Monday (just the 2 of us). He cut it VERY short (for me), just in case. Our state NV isn't on total lock down, yet. But I have been VERY careful or not going out for several weeks, now. Washing hands, masks, gloves, hat, etc.... I put hand sanitizer on top of the gloves & mask, too. Just as an extra protection. So when I DO have to venture out, I can feel a little safer. I have been keeping 10 feet away for everyone, again for several weeks.Check out GINASPARKS3 blogs. She has been living through it for several months, GREAT info! Once I started reading her, I immediately followed her advise. At first people thought I was weird, they don't now!

I think THE most important thing to do for our health is to 'play', whatever that means for you! emoticon emoticon . I've been taking photos around our yard; editing photos; cleaning closet spaces; cooking & trying new recipes; coming to Spark land more often, etc. Finding the JOY in life, as it changes, daily! How about you? emoticon Stay happy! emoticon

(thx IAMJETTA for photo!)

I get update letters from all the political parties (signed up for them) and just got this one from the Leader of (the largest party) Opposition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I couldnít be prouder of Kiwis when we unite together.

We are in tough times, but it is that unity and strength that will get us through.

There is no room for politics in a National Emergency, and we stand fundamentally with the Government to do all we can to defeat Covid-19.

The health and safety of our people, our communities, and our country is just too important.

To the essential frontline workers keeping us safe and supplied with the everyday things we need, we thank you for your service to your fellow Kiwis.

But as individuals, we must do our bit for our fellow Kiwis.

Today was day one, of a four-week lockdown. I know many of you are feeling anxious and uncertain with many questions about the days and weeks ahead, but please know that you are not alone.

We are all in this together.

Our entire team of Members of Parliament, staff, candidates and volunteers will be working hard to keep connected with our communities, particularly our older and more vulnerable Kiwis, to help them get through this difficult and challenging time.

We want to be as accessible as the current situation allows, so if you or someone you know need to contact your local MP for support or advice, you can find their details here.

Make sure you also stay up to date with the latest Ministry of Health announcements here at www.covid19.govt.nz.

We have a real chance to flatten the curve of infection of Covid-19, but we can only do that if we all play by the same rules. The decisions we make donít just affect ourselves but also the lives of others in our community.

Our message is simple. Stay at home, save lives.

Respect the lockdown, only go out for essentials, and look after each other.

Weíre counting on you.

Stay safe.

Simon.

ALL parties are working together and all electioneering is off while the National Emergency is in effect. That is how it should be.

Now, to put a smile on your faces, those of you with FaceBook, watch this :-) Even HE knows the proper protocol LOL!

Hi to all!!

SPARKLING, thanks for sharing the photo of Lucy and of your lovely home paradise!!!
emoticon emoticon
I agree about GINA's blogs - very helpful and encouraging!!! emoticon
Well done on walking!!! emoticon I did a SP video today and a short workout with my little dumbbells.
emoticon

North Carolina, where I live, may have a state-wide "Stay at Home" order instituted tomorrow by our Governor. He did a press conference today and sort of alluded to it. Also, Katie (DD) texted at her lunchtime and said her boss gave her and the other employees individual official paperwork to show to the police if they are stopped for being out. The vet hospital where she works plans to stay open and continue to see their cat and dog patients.
emoticon emoticon

Hope everyone is having a lovely day. Little green leaves are coming out on my trees and my dogwood trees are beginning to bloom, as well!

Hugs!!! emoticon

Love the photos & humor!

emoticon 3-25-2020 I realized 3 months ago was Christmas! AND 7 months to go before the next one! emoticon I have kept my little Christmas tree up. It makes me feel good to see the little twinkle lights. As we are getting more & more locked into our lovely homes, I am trying to find ways to be joy FILLED & exercise, as in walking. I usually do 3 miles a few times a week. Today the wind is going to be 35MPH. So I took Lucy dog, out early. She was happy to get out. She DOES have a nice back yard, but not the same!

Also, communicating with family & friends through the internet. Doing things that bring me joy. Taking photos, is 1 thing I love! NOW I have time to edit them! We usually work out of our home & still are. But things have changed for us, as I am SURE they have for you! Let's just keep our sunny side's up!

IF you want to read blogs from SP, GINASPARKS3; she has/is living through it, today is her 62 day! Check out her blogs, she is a GREAT emoticon for all of us!

(Lucy watching her version of TV)

(I took photos of SPRING in our paradise back yard this last Sunday. REMEMBERING my bliss!)

emoticon Hi to all!!

KATHRYN, yes, I'm not sure, but I'll bet you're right that the thrift stores are closed. *I will be toasting SparkPeople and Spark friends with you. When it's 2pm for you, it's 5pm for me, so I will do it then.
emoticon (I'll probably drink water or tea)

GINA, it helps that you understand how I felt when I cried. emoticon
It drives me crazy when I feel helpless to make people understand the gravity of things, but I have contacted President Trump via email (along with, I'm sure, many thousands of other citizens). And basically that's all I can do except pray. *Thank you, also, for your kindness and your very wise words.
emoticon

KRIS, that is funny! (but a little sad here, too) because the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta have actually told nurses and doctors here that they can fashion masks from clothes since we don't have enough masks.

Wishing peace, comfort, and joy to all!!!

Miller, to be honest I cried too (not happy tears) when I heard the statement on the news about reopening in the U.S. and that people will be 'packing the churches at Easter'.

But I long ago came to the conclusion that I can't control what politicians do. I can't control what my boss does, my neighbours or my kids. I especially can't control what my cat does!

But I can control my reaction to things. I can control my response, and not let them or their ideas pay rent in my head. I will focus on the things I can control.

So keep doing what you are doing, dwell on good, positive things. Find a way to help others (Actually you are already doing such a great job at that, being the leader here. You have such a kind and encouraging heart.)

And most of all, stay home. Wash those hands. Find good things to do. We can have peace in the midst of the storm.

Late getting as I have been watching TV off and on throughout the day.

Miller I am like you mostly a stay at home.person except for shopping and most of that was to the supermarket. I did also go to the secondhand stores but I am pretty sure they are closed.

The virtual date yesterday went well so i am keeping up the 2am Pacific time virtual date for my Spark family. I am having a sugar free French vanilla latte but you can have what you want as we all raise a cheer for Spark People and Spark Friends.

KRIS, I pretty much live in "lock down" mode all the time, too. I don't go out much at all and rarely see extended family.

I was glad to see the UK Prime Minister had decided to take COVID-19 seriously now. As for Trump, I've not only been shaking my head in dismay, but I also started crying last night when he was doing his Coronavirus update. He REALLY doesn't "get it." I'm glad you haven't had COVID-19 deaths in NZ yet. We had over 100 just yesterday alone.

I'm glad you had a good visit with family. I'm sure it did your heart and mind good to be with them.

Glad you liked the Good News website... nice to see people helping people and some positive news for a change.

Gina - being in lock-down doesn't bother me, because I pretty much live like that normally. I only usually go out once a week to get my groceries, and don't often see my family. We generally communicate on Messenger and the phone. Mind you, what you do by choice can become another story when you are told you have to LOL!

Miller - Thank you. I'll happily accept early birthday wishes emoticon I saw that about Trump and the comment about opening up businesses. I am just so amazed how someone who has no qualifications in health issues, can claim to know better than those who specialize in this sort of thing and have the highest qualifications that can be got. I hope nobody takes offense, but even in NZ many of us raise our eyebrows and shake our heads in dismay. Mind you, Trump's comment is about as dumb as Boris Johnson (UK Prime Minister) suggesting letting Covid-19 run it's course in the community to build up heard immunization! He HAS changed his tune, now, tho'!

My daughter and son-in-law and younger g/son came to visit me this afternoon, as well as my older g/son and his little family. It gave me the opportunity to give my younger g/son and my g/g/son their Easter Goodies. I have groceries here to well and truly see me through the month, and then some, if the lock-down is extended. All political parties have taken electioneering off the menu (supposed to be our general elections this year) to fight this war on Covid-19 together.

This morning the total cases stood at 155, with 4 community transmitted cases. Fortunately, so far no-one has died, and only about 12 have needed hospitalization.

I had quite a good look around the link you provided. It is excellent.

Katie's therapist told her about a website that offers uplifting and positive stories during during the Coronavirus crisis. Some things are Corona related, but are positive stories of how people are connecting or helping each other out. There's even one funny one where a man walked his dog using a drone.

KATHRYN, I like your exercise routine!!! emoticon

KRIS, I'm very sorry things have gotten so much worse - I do think shutting things down is good so I'm glad your PM has good sense. I just heard on the news that our president is considering suggesting that all businesses open again and people go on back into the workforce because he's so worried about the economy. Apparently he said the cure musn't become worse than the disease or some idiotic statement like that. (Sorry if I offended anyone). I think your country is being smart!! By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! (a bit early)

Kathryn, I will definitely toast you tomorrow at 2 pm!

Sparkling, good idea to take a news break. Stay home and keep busy with things that make you happy.

Miller, glad to hear you found an action movie you like. I am watching through the Outlander TV series again.

Kris, I met up with 2 New Zealand friends today for tea. Since we have downgraded to low risk status in our city we can meet out in public places if sitting apart. I blogged about it on my Sparkpage today. She was telling me about the changes in the city and has been able to share with friends and family the steps we took to stay safe here, that are now being followed in New Zealand. All that can seem upsetting at first but in the long run closing everything down is what keeps us safe.

Last night I attended online a virtual church service with people fro all over the world who had once lived in Beijing. There were members from the US, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa and China. It was so very special, and after the service they broke into small chat groups to have some fellowship time. It was very special.

Hang in there dear friends! We will make it through this time and come out wiser and stronger. Hugs!

We (NZ) had a major announcement today.

My daughter phoned me quite concerned today, because it is my birthday in a few days, and she is adamant that they want to come out tomorrow after her work (caregivers only to prepare stuff that their adult mentally disabled charges can do at home) or during the day on Wednesday before the lock-down begins around mid-day on Wednesday.

I am resting today from exercise but have set up a schedule of my exercise routine. Monday Wednesday and Friday I will do strength training, on Tuesday Thursday on Saturday I will do cardio. My right knee is acting up again, now it is hurting and going out. My cardio for the time being will be seated workouts.

I am making some me time for me. I am making a date of at 2:00pm, I am stopping what I am doing and having an iced French vanilla latte. I did that today and invited my Spark friends to join me, maybe you can join me tomorrow. We can make it a virtual date by having you have one when it is 2:00 on the west coast and your time at your place. We can raise a toast to Spark People and Spark friends.

Yes! Trying to stay happy through ALL of this, is a challenge! I'm here for you, all! Not watching news for a few days, I can't seem to take it. Just taking a break from it!

emoticon 3-22-2020 What I am doing during this VERY quiet time: Happy 1 month Birthday emoticon to my emoticon new FAIRY GOD DAUGHTER! I have been doing ALLOT more communicating through the internet, texting, phone &&&&. I have been playing with my clothes. Putting on things I forgot I had. Waiting to wear them for business meetings, etc. I feel so pretty, dressing up just for me! & DH of course! I plan on getting into our garden. Last Saturday, we cleaned the house from top to bottom, I'm cleaning out drawers & spaces that have needed it for several years. BABY steps here! We CAN go outside, (Las Vegas) so our back yard paradise is where I spend some time, too cold for pool right now. Also, keeping 10 feet away of others, using a mask & gloves & hand sanitize. Our park behind us, closed for refurbishments, just before this all started. It IS so wonderfully quiet in the neighborhood, now! Walking our dog, etc. So yesterday I went to the Wetlands & walked several hours. Spring is everywhere there, too! I am also doing more SP videos, my favorite as I have said, forever, is SP Nicole's 12 minute seated core work out. I also plan on getting back into my Sheppard Pilates DVD. I WAS able to do it 3 times a week. I stopped when I hurt my knee. But better, now. It REALLY brings in the inches. Also, we are running our business from home, as best we can. So far so good! I think the most important thing for me is to stay positive. Stop & smell the flowers. Period. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hi to all!!

KRIS, I'm sorry to hear the number of COVID-19 cases have increased in NZ. It sounds like shopping has become challenging there as it has here. For some reason, there's no ground beef here, which is weird because out West we have lots of cattle farms. *I'm very sorry about dear little Spotty. I know you will miss her. She really did live a long life, so I hope that helps comfort you.
emoticon emoticon

RENIA, the grocery stores here are running out of many things. I hope you're able to find veggies and fruit when you need them.
emoticon

GINA, thanks for your encouraging post. I need to be reminded that it will all pass. They're saying here that it could last up to 18 months. Let's hope that doesn't happen!

I hope everyone has a good weekend. emoticon

Oh, Kris, so sorry for such a rough day. Especially the loss of your sweet cat. It must have been a tough call, but seemed the right thing to do. I know how much having a pet can mean. I am sure another 4 legged friend will find its way into your life at just the right time.

Sorry also to hear about the freezer. When it hit here I had just moved and had to leave my freezer behind as there was literally no room in my small apartment. So I only had the smallish section one in the fridge. I have to be very selective about what frozen foods I buy. I decided to stock up on dry beans and rice in case food became unavailable, which thankfully it never did. We always were able to buy food, thought fresh veggies ran short sometimes. But I bought red beans, mung beans and chickpeas, then soak them overnight.

It is an adjustment to weather all these changes. We have to keep reminding ourselves they are for our good and they won't last forever. In a way the scary news we hear on TV is good as it makes people more serious about staying inside, and that is what protects people.

I love watching the Italians singing to one another during the quarantine . I have a friend in Italy, and she is joining as well.

Have a good day all. Keep smiling, it will all pass.

Sorry to read all of your news, Kris.
Weíve been on lockdown here in France, since Tuesday, planned for 15 days, but likely to be extended. Less panic buying seems to take place here, although there was a lack of fresh veggies and fruit at the local village shop. This too shall pass...
Have a safe, healthy and peaceful weekend

Hi guys. Man, what a difference a few days make.

A week ago NZ was at 5 cases all from overseas. Today it's 52 cases, and 2 MAY NOT be the result of returning travelers. We have 4 levels of alert, and today we went from 1st level to the 2nd one. 70's and over and those with compromised health are being advised to stay home and we are all being told to not travel anywhere in NZ unless we HAVE to. There is a limit on the number of people who can be in a public building, and a limit outside.

I went into a large nation-wide Appliance Store to get g/son an upright freezer for his birthday. I had been thinking about giving them one for Xmas but decided I would wait till Mum's money had come through. BIG mistake. They don't have any except if I want to pay $3,000 for one (over 3x what the one I was going to get costs). They said that they couldn't get any at all.

The supermarkets are murder to try and get around with the way people are behaving. I went in on Wednesday and got everything I needed. My main supermarket had tons of loo paper and it was on special, there were only tiny gaps in some of the aisles, but there was NO Bread to be seen, other than Gluten Free. I went in again yesterday to buy my older g/son's groceries and take up to them. It was MURDER!!! My daughter was with me - she suffers quite a bit of severe anxiety in places like that with a few people in them - but braved it. There was Loo paper, but very little meat and NONE of the cheaper cuts of red meat. I wasn't spending $30 - $45/kg on meat. I managed to get ONE pack of chicken breasts, ONE pack of topside stewing steak, and ONE pack of drumsticks - each under a kg. There was very little in the way of canned beans of any sort, the UHT milk was scarce, however I did manage to get some for them. Rice and Pasta was in very short supply and the frozen veggies were almost non-existent, and toddler-sized nappies were hard to find. I did manage to grab a couple small packs. I did get a good balance of groceries, fruit and some veggies that will last them more than a week. I then took my daughter home because I had to go to the other supermarket and I don't think she would have made it.

That supermarket had very little, and it was jam packed, and the shelves almost empty throughout. I managed to get ONE pack of Lamb mince (ground lamb)- that was all that was there. I took them up to g/son's town, but before I delivered the groceries to their place, I went to the independent appliance store in their town. Once again, NO freezers to be had. I was told that NZ has NONE left - they can't access any and they don't know when they will be in. (our NZ Company, Fisher & Paykel stupidly shifted the manufacturing of white-ware to China!) She said that it was people panic buying re the Virus. I made sure she was aware mine wasn't that reason - it was for my g/son's birthday and had been planned since before Xmas LOL!

My grandson had his surgery to remove a big Kidney Stone on Thursday. It was day surgery. He isn't allowed to lift anything much so grocery bags are out of the question, and because he is classed as a contractor, he isn't entitled to any sick pay or holiday pay. Also, because of the surgery, it is DEFINITELY unwise to be out in the community so soon.

My cataract surgery has been put off due to the virus. It was supposed to be 8th April. I would love to be able to see properly, however, I am quite happy that my health won't be compromised by having it done.

The reason I went back into town yesterday, wasn't so much for my g/son's groceries, but because my 19 1/2yr old cat had her last little ride. She had been getting more and more frail and losing her balance. It was becoming very hard for her to even just exist, so I figured it would be much kinder to her now than go off somewhere, under my house or someone else's, or fall in some water and die. She is now buried beside Scruffy - my beautiful little dog who died 4yrs ago today. For the first time EVER in my 66yr old life (few days time), I won't have had a little four-legged friend to keep me company.

Stay safe, everyone! It's times like this that our internet family really comes to the fore!

Hello dear sisters! I agree Sparkling, keep your sunny side up! That is what will get you through these tough times. It can seem scary at first, but believe me, once you get used to being indoors it really isn't so bad.

Things have hit us financially here pretty hard, but even that is looking up. My son has a start-up which was just crippled by all this. It already was struggling but this epidemic was the last straw. But then, he was offered an excellent job in Singapore a couple weeks ago! It would involve travelling back and forth between Singapore and China each month. I can't describe how that was dropped straight out of heaven. I am so happy for him, and though he can't enter Singapore now until the epidemic lifts, he has signed the contract.

I live in a very hectic urban area, but am so blessed to have two lovely parks in walking distance, right across the street. After 55 days inside I went out yesterday and it was so beautiful! I wanted to post pictures. If you can't go out, remember that soon you will. Life will eventually get back on an even keel. In the meantime wash those hands, enjoy the indoor time, learn to cook a new meal, play an instrument, learn a new craft, read a new book. Relax.

And the guard at the park was so excited to see a foreigner after so long he insisted on a selfie! We are still required to wear masks, but it won't be long now until I can feel the sun on my face again.
