Word of the Day: Precious

Challenge: You are precious. How are you going to take care of such a precious person in the month of February? Make this your last journal entry for January.

If you completed the task, add the word of the day to your journal. You can add it to your journal as a word, picture or even a sticker that represents that word to you.

emoticon ooh oooh oooh! new2me word & thought! Xenial!

emoticon love it! we ought to treat ourselves as well as we treat all others, from babies, to bffs, even to strangers... methinks it's essential! working on it ~ by taking actions that self-care love me and gentling my self-talk to what I would say to others :)

emoticon Yummy!
now, I'm all in on this word! it is my food go to part/# 2! I had so many gazillion reasons I used to eat and OVEReat, that I thought, somehow, I have to have a helpful way to sort the w's (when/why/what/where, oh & hows) ~ and set my part/#1 as eat when my body needs foods & part/# 2! choose foods that nourish my body that are yummy! that I like and enjoy! Explore and find these kinds of foods! Yum!!!

I suppose part #3 is the 'Special' W's (reasons) for eating more or differently and figuring out how/what I want to do ~ like handling holiday feasts and truly special occasions... what to do on sick days or vacations, or celebrations.... that is evolving, I am working on that.

emoticon I have been watching a few of the shows that share a year in the life of people who are very overweight - and in their stories and words, I can see my own Extra reasons for OVEReating. I realize that I have to release the extras, because it's hurting me and why I'm so very overweight too...

emoticon On one of the shows, for Holly, the counselor shared with Holly, the idea that... negative self-talk becomes a habit and to set aside the negative self-talk, and speak to yourself lovingly and tenderly, towards yourself. You have control over this process. Use the lessons from the past to help pursue a better future for yourself ~ draw strength from overcoming so many things... (end quote with a touch of paraphrased)

and I would add, to help ourselves reach forward to our hopes & dreams :)

Wisdom to know the difference ~ serenity prayer has helped me a lot... sort out the nonsense. take appropriate time to deal with what we can actually do, then set it aside until it is time to do more and turn our attention/embrace things that help us ~ including me time & emotional bubblebaths. it's actually empowering to realize that we can release the harmful and the things that make us fret... we can schedule time to work on things we can change/do... and we can restore our energy and increase our motivation, strengthen ourselves, rest and nourish ourselves so that we can keep going forward, instead of getting stuck in the angst, sorrow and misery of problems and failures... and part of that is releasing it... very empowering! because it frees us for the posssibles & good stuff ahead!

Restore- I am restoring my positive self talk. I am a great person and I need to remember that!

Spark- Spreading the spark--love this team!

Tranquil- I'm like Jill in this --when my house is in order and organized, I am so much calmer. Right now it is a mess but I am working at decluttering and finding the tranquility.

Unique-- This is so true. We are all our own unique person and what works for one, may not work for another. I'm working on finding what works for me!

Restore ~ love it... "Restore your self-confidence. Restore your self-talk to be positive. Restore faith in your ability to stick to your guns and lose weight this month. Get rid of any self-doubts. You are worth the restoration! "

I have been thinking about change and how to switch from dwelling in the mistakes/past and making the choice to turn and make a choice to help myself - to look forward and what is possible. I think this is a life skill that is essential making real changes. As we keep making these choices ~ we will restore our self-confidence... and our self-talk will grow more positive.... we will get stronger and get on a roll with it... I love the idea that we don't have to stay stuck in the past, we can restore our self-talk to positive and our faith/belief that this really is possible!

emoticon me too ~ Sparking helps me. Glad we have this team!

emoticon Tranquil is important to me... because I am important and making choices to help me is important.... these include making time to do the things to help me, like find and make yummilicious, nourishing food, making time to stretch and move and help my body - having the tools and clothes, and things I need, have them available! I feel more tranquil when I intentionally make time to do these things :)

emoticon Opportunity ~ if we wake up breathing, we have the chance to try something helpful ~ something new2us, good4us ~ I was thinking about old ways/things when I was sick - that was before - we would stuff soup full of crackers, eat cinnamon toast, etc... but that was actually kind of hurting my body because I was eating too much of it... Today, I have the opportunity to try different - to help my body when i'm sick - not use "sick" as a reason to overwhelm it with too much food... PLUS I can choose foods that will help me nourish my body, like broth veggie soups - maybe egg flower soup (easy to make)…

Passion ~ luv this! emoticon emoticon emoticon
I love this ~ choose things, foods that I like - don't have to eat anything I don't like... explore fun things I can love that make me feel happy - help me destress - games, sunshine, playing with furbaby!

emoticon Quiet - listen to my heart, be still, quiet, de-stress, re-focus, and follow my heart, reach forward to my hopes and dreams :)

emoticon Love the word jumble Dee!

emoticon Love or habit?
for me, both - I certainly embraced social/holiday feasting/overeating - foods that were sweet, ooey gooey... times, places for the eatings…

emoticon I was watching a food show the other day that talked about how General Tso chicken was invented and came from China to America - upshot a cook created/served it to some officers, and somehow it made it to New York. It is a mix of spicy and sweet (& tad sour) chicken... that has become popular in the States but never really caught on in Asia as much because there, they go more for the sour/non-sweet foods/varieties...

so, that kind of hit me by surprise with the thought... our body likes the sweet stuff - but it also can be a cultural preference/habit

emoticon I am exploring new2me habit - non-sweet foods, that I can eat, enjoy and grow to love too :)

Watching reruns of The Walton's. I love watching their good, honest, hard working, loving family. Drinking tea and slowing down. Giving myself a rest.

January 9th -- Inspired
Brenda's consistency inspires me. She's losing one or two pounds a week, following WW, and just keeps going. Bev's 140 pound loss. Life changing! My sister just reached onederland. Other's have done it and so can I.

January 10th -- Joyful
I think this is my favorite. Finding Joy on the Journey. Cooking a new healthy recipe; dancing freely; walking in the fresh air and noticing the beauty; noticing that food is tasting better; trying new things; losing weight; reaching a goal. Remembering my "Why."

January 11th -- KISS
Keep It Simple Sweetie. Jules' friend wrote this in a blog: "Remember, meals do not need to be masterpieces!!! It can be simple and easy." ~CTNHEALTHY Keeping this in mind, I'm trying to make simple fast healthy cooked-at-home meals. We had air fried haddock and prepackaged salad for dinner last week. Pretty simple!

January 12th -- Love
Love or habit? I've made a habit of eating fast food. I love the food, but not what it does to my body and health. So here's to creating new habits. Someday, I want to crave healthy foods. I've been eating 5 baby carrots before lunch to slow myself down; sneak in an extra veggie; and focus on my goals. I love the way weight loss feels.

Word of the Day: Love

Challenge: Love or habit. Do you know the difference? Are you eating that because you LOVE it or because you have made it a habit? Do you love what it does to you or is it something that you simply crave because its there? Love what you are eating if you love the results it will give you.

If you completed the task, add the word of the day to your journal. You can add it to your journal as a word, picture or even a sticker that represents that word to you.

Word of the Day: Kiss

Challenge: Although eskimos can kiss by rubbing noses together, most of us kiss by using our lips. Think about what is passing through your lips today. Is it worthy of your kissable lips?

If you completed the task, add the word of the day to your journal. You can add it to your journal as a word, picture or even a sticker that represents that word to you.

-- So happy happy for you (& You inspire me! truly :)

emoticon I have spent a few days listening to a few different shows focused on cooking and also on weight loss.... and recognizing there are a lot of things that just aren't for me... like the sea kelp... no, not for me, not right now! but on an Asian fusion cooking show, they braised a chicken cut in 1/2, simmered slowly in a huge cast iron pot of water with spices to create a delicious broth ~ it had things like a couple whole green onions, some crushed garlic, fresh ground ginger... and, er… oh, lemon grass... maybe rice vinegar? I'm going to have to actually rewatch or look for a solid spice/flavor recipe on this... oh and maybe some kind of/a few peppercorns ground in a mortar pestle... and I thought, hmmm, maybe.

emoticon I am inspired to keep experimenting to find foods that I can like, that nourish my body :)

ps ~ speaking of online simplifying - I did that late last year too.... released/closed old accounts. reopened this fresh new account...

What inspired you today? Sounds crazy, but I got a lot of things done online today and that inspired me. One of the things I want to focus on this year is "simplifying", so I went online and deleted a ton of things I no longer need. I used to have four email addresses and now I have two. I also cleaned out my contacts list, deleted a bunch of website bookmarks, and deleted several apps on my iPad. (I used to play a lot of games on it, but now I just play one.) I want to simplify online so I can be more active offline.

Yesterday a huge pile of papers inspired me to go through them and get my office sorted!

Then my babies inspired me to "play with me RaRa." so we played and ran, jumped and sang songs. Of course we watched "The Big Grinch" and Toy Story.

One more item you can add to that list Dee - YOU grill the steak. Take over the grill and be fierce!

January 7

Word of the Day: Grace

Challenge: How graceful do you look when you try to get up off the floor? Many of us have difficulties with doing physical moves such as getting off the floor or doing some yoga poses. Think of something you have difficulty doing and do it anyway. Don't worry that you are not as graceful as you wish. Be proud of the grace you are displaying giving it a try anyway.

If you completed the task, add the word of the day to your journal. You can add it to your journal as a word, picture or even a sticker that represents that word to you.

We're each on our own journey, but doing it together. emoticon Jules!

This is my focus for 2020

Paul didn't want to grill the steak I had planned for dinner so instead I brought home Big Mac's, fries, and a Large Diet Coke. Fast food has a strong hold on me. What can I do to avoid this next time?
1. Drive straight home and decide what to eat at home. This will give me time to look at other options. I might still have the fast food, but I'd have to really really really want it to go back out and get it.

2. Explain to Paul that his changing our dinner plans is hurting my efforts. Ask him to please grill the steak.

3. Eat a Lean Cuisine meal and have Paul find his own dinner. (He would do this, but I always feel guilty asking him to.)

Very well said Jules. We all have our different reasons for the way that we ear and the triggers that set us off. It is good to ponder those things and learn more about what we need to do to change those habits.

Going to add a little addition to our journaling thread. Some more "positives" to ponder this month.

January 6

Word of the Day: Focus

Challenge: Think about what you want to accomplish this month in your weightloss journey. Why are you trying to lose weight? Focus on those reasons when making choices today.

If you completed the task, add the word of the day to your journal. You can add it to your journal as a word, picture or even a sticker that represents that word to you.

love the thought of pondering unplanned eatings!

awhile back, I realized I was overeating for every reason I could find, all the way through the year... by overeating I mean snagging goodies, treats, sweets... in my family, we find many/all ways and reasons to celebrate with a treat/sweets/foods... from getting ice cream floats when we drive home from the beach to getting an ice cream coming home from the doctors and then there's all the usual holidays, weekend's here and oh, 1 of my favs, free samples day @ the big box stores! LOL And, and, and...

just can't seem to lose weight and while eating & treating - so, pondering what/when/where/how and why we want to choose to enjoy a feast, a sweet or a treat is important... and I'm realizing it evolves as we tackle new ideas and grow forward...

emoticon we are all different with the times/foods we like to eat, so everyone just do you and i'll do me, but I love that we talk about it because your ideas sometimes spark me! I'm so glad we have this team

emoticon 1 of the 1st things I decided to change/work on was reducing the amount of Halloween candy - I would clip the coupons and hit the 1/2 off sales the day after... to stock up... that would keep me stocked and roll into the thanksgiving and Christmas treats and goodies... and it was hard emotionally... I remember feeling sad, even crying when I released that old habit... and I crashed hard the 1st several (think 3 or 4) years that I worked/practiced to change that... and even this year, the tv ads for my favs still triggered me...

emoticon I mention this, I guess because not every day is a feast... most days are just regular days... and I think it helps to figure out when are the special times and how/what we want to eat then… when we actively make the choices, we don't have to feel like we're being bad or guilty. If we crash and burn, well, we tried, and it's a bit like learning a super complex gymnastics routine or high twist flip and turn dive from the high board... we start small, practice, build our skills, crash, chat with coach about what went good/wrong, talk about what we can try/practice next, then go do it. we weren't bad because we crashed... we were just working on it... and hadn't perfected it.... yet. and someday, if we keep taking cracks at it... we'll get there and find more new2us, good4us things to practice.

emoticon We had the last hurrah family New Years feast yesterday - people brought all sorts of leftover goodies and a dominant thought I had was... oh cripes, the plate is tooooo small!!!

emoticon

emoticon I am practicing having a nice (1) plate of my favorite things (instead of 6+!!! ;) and that's another change that is taking longer and more practice than I ever imagined.. but it is an emotional compromise between my old thinking of all (eat until stuffed/6+ plates) or nothing (don't eat a bite of my very low calorie diet)… and the compromise to enjoy some instead of nothing or way to much is a happy making new2me approach...

emoticon journaling it helps us figure out what we do want ;)

My journal entry for yesterday deals with "unplanned eating". The reasons and the choices that I made. Some good and some not so good. I realized that I ate dessert because it was in the house and because my husband suggested having it. Need to keep temptation out of the house. Purchase desserts that fit into my healthy eating plan or desserts that he likes and I won't eat.

I also ate at a fast food restaurant (something I wasn't planning on doing). My sister called with an invitation to go shopping. I don't regret my choice here. Spending time with family and friends is the best part of living. I don't want to be a hermit. So go with the flow and make the best choice possible at the time. Two hard shell tacos - 340 calories - worth it.

Jules, you pick the best images. I'm always inspired by your dreams and goals.

Here's a picture of my journal entry:

For the sake of time saving, I'm tracking on paper right now. It might not be as accurate as using SP nutrition tracker, but it's a starting place. Doing what I can for now.

My Big Hooray last night was closing the kitchen at 6:00 p.m. Around 10:00 p.m., I really had to White Knuckle It (as Jules says), but I didn't eat. Broke the fast this morning with a hard boiled egg and 1 slice of bacon and a cup of tea. Feels great. No McDonald's (my biggest downfall).

Here's mine for 2020 - its also a bit about attitude ~ focusing on eating well, rising above my problems to keep going and find a way forward. Sometimes, methinks, we have to be our own cheerleader/superhero when it simply seems too hard. I want to keep going forward this year :)

Love the journals and creativity!
For the first two days, I've been writing my food on a sheet of paper. Jotting down the time, what I ate, calories, and what I was feeling at the time. A lot of my eating is done when I'm bored or tired. I also had a friend take a "before" picture for me. I'm not going to post it now, but plan to when I can show my progress.

Write on ladies!! Here's my vision collage for January 2020.

I actually love the idea of taking a picture of what I am eating so I can add it later to my journal so I don't forget what I actually ate as sometimes it takes me a day or two to get everything entered.

Love all the pretty journals - the one I have is a 5 year one 2019 - 2023 so I can look back at the previous year and see what was going on in my life at the time.

I am determined to give myself the best go at logging for at least 30 days - hoping it is a habit by then and it continues.

emoticon snapping pics of what I actually eat has helped. 1st time was when we photoblogged it here, a few years back... Last year, I started focusing on carb quantity in a meal/snack for diabetes, and did a food photo blog for a couple weeks... and that helped me get going with the tracking again... so after my last major crash, started doing the pic to go with my tracking and it's really helping. mostly it's just for me, because, it's a bit of work to load up the pics and pretty up to post them... but really, the food shares over the years here on this team have helped me explore, so I always love when people share what they are actually choosing to try/eat :)

Kim - the one I'm using to track food and fitness is also a Happy Planner. Thinking about getting another one as my office planner. I like that you can personalize it. They also have some great motivational stickers.

The one on the left is the Happy Planner. The other is my Journal that I'm using like a diary.

Fabulous! I love that everyone is embracing this!

I'm having fun with it. I have always started in the past and never kept at it but this year I'm making it work for me!

Here are mine. The big one stays at home and I keep the little one in my purse. These are made by The Happy Planner so you can customize them anyway you would like too. I also have a journal that is just plain black.

Here is the small one

Great idea Kim. I jot notes in my phone and then add to my planner at night. Mine is upstairs so I'll get pics tonight when I do my journaling. I have one that I use to track my food/fitness with a daily motivational sticker and another one is more of a diary for writing my thoughts. One goal I have for this month is to start blogging again.

Stephanie -- I saw that journal - very pretty.

Wendi - I am all for creativity. Your journal is a perfect place to use for that creative outlet.

A picture of what you are eating is a great way to track. You can not only see what you are eating but how much of something you are eating. Portion distortion is showcased. We have done threads like this in the past and many will find it helpful. It is also a great way to remember when you are eating away from home or just "nibbling" instead of a planned snack. Thanks for the reminder of this.

Thank you all for the big welcome backs. It feels good to be back. I would certainly journal if I were as creative as Wendi. Beautiful and inspirational, Wendi!

I know that logging my food was what kept me grounded, even putting in the ugly. The one thing I did do was make a note in my Spark log of what was going on and how I was feeling on my ugly days.

I logged everything today and feel proud of my first day!

I know when I journal and track I do SO much better, and this post couldn't have come at a better time. I bought a planner from Amazon a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't written anything in it yet. It's really beautiful though. I'll take a picture of it and post it in a few minutes. I'm loving these posts and ideas. Keep them coming!

Welcome back, Lisa!

stumbled across an old paper tracker similar to the one I use now. i have been paper tracking - just writing down what/quantity I eat.... (and shooting for the ranges I know... if I don't know, I use the SP tracker to look it up and understand it) and I also snap a pic of what I actually ate. It's just for me... I find my food choices get wonky and I don't want to track/take pics when I struggle. Sometimes just pushing through the tracking/pic taking helps me eat enough and stop before too much. I try just to deal with 1 meal or 1 snack at a time. I try not to lump the eatings for a day/days/week together because then I start bargaining... I'll eat this now, starve later and that's also a big trigger/red flag for me... so, started trying this and found I quit using the sp tracker because it was like a double record... and actually doing pretty well with this.

Lisa you were very active when I first started here. Often wondered how you were doing. So glad to see you back.

I am so sporadic with my logging and like Dee I do so much better when I log. Need to do it until it becomes a habit. Have my planner/journal ready to go

I know tracking my nutrition is the tool I need to use in order to lose weight. Just winging it doesn't work for me. Fail to plan - plan to fail. I'm so glad to hear this will be the focus for January.

I love my journal and writing down my positives steps.

Based on some of your comments, tracking seems to either be a goal to start or a habit many of you want to commit to in the new year. So taking that path, several of the threads for this month will include an element relating back to keeping a journal or tracking your food, fitness and water intakes. Even if it takes you a few days to get a journal you can write in for 2020, find a notebook or start a document online where you can write your daily tracking and thoughts down. Track what you are eating and record your fitness accomplishments. Your journal should be your private diary of your journey in 2020. Be honest with yourself no matter how difficult it is to write down. But don’t be afraid to praise yourself either. We can find it easy to write down our perceived failures, however, it always seems harder to write down what we did well. Find your positives every day. They will help to keep you motivated. Commit time every day to even write a few words down. You will find it gets easier once it becomes habit.

May we think of freedom, not as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to do what is right.

United we stand. Divided we fall.
