for me it's old bills, bank statements, etc - and the mail - we are gone for two months at a time, and when we return i have to deal with the mail. when i can finally face it, i sort it, pay the bills (if i haven't paid them in advance or guestimating), and then make a stack of the envelopes of papers that need to be saved or shredded. when i started this current venture of cleaning out hotspots i wound up shredding most of this old mail that was sorted and piled from summer of 2010, and 2012 - seems i never got that far. and yesterday's hotspot included papers from 2008 and 2009!

i found this was helpful:

I'm right there with you! I have so much paper, and an old geneology project (from before computers) that I don't know what to do with at this point. So yes, in boxes, and being ignored..

Gonna go check out FlyLady. Haven't been in a while.

I'm bringing a dead thread back to life here as this is a reoccurring concern. For those of you familiar with FlyLady (flyLady.net), this month's habit is paper clutter:

http://www.flylady.net/d/habits-of-the-m
onth/october/

I still need to read through the article, but paper is one of my biggest problems around the house. I have BOXES of the stuff that I just can't bear to part with and since they're already boxed (and out of sight), it's that much harder to make myself.

Hello fellow paperaholic sisters. My name is Kim and I am addicted to paper clutter. I've heard that admitting it is the first step to recovery. LoL! But . . . seriously.
I have always had a problem with paper clutter and now that I am in college it is out of control. I am hoping that by joining this team I will find healthy ways to be a more organized person. And, I hope to meet and befriend many of you here while I'm at it.

Toodles! ~ Kim

Renee and Family -

I can relate to every word you wrote. The only way to make it better is to start with 5 minutes at a time. Just pick up a small handful of papers and work on putting them in the right place for 5 minutes. And when the 5 minutes is up, stop. Put whatever is not done back on the pile.

The "right" place could be: Trash, Recycle, File, To-Do, Give to someone else, etc.

Once you practice making these decisions on papers, one at a time, it gets much easier to stay on top of it all.

It takes time and you just have to force yourself to start. Start anywhere because anything you do to make an effort, gets the ball rolling and each time, it becomes easier and easier.

I hope these suggestions can help you. The most important thing of all is: DO NOT GIVE UP!!! YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE WORTH FIGURING THIS CHALLENGE OUT!!!!

Best Wishes and I believe in you!

Thanks for the Woo Hoo!

I'm now on a working vacation - have to finish an important online course so decided to do it in a beautiful place. I have a suite on the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking waves and all kinds of people from my 12th floor balcony.

I'm getting ready to sign in to the course so wish me luck!

This too will get rid of a ton of paper clutter for me as I can get rid of the course stuff and move on to the next project!!!

I gathered ALL the papers, boxed them up neatly and stacked them all together in the middle of the computer room floor, and I'm going through a box at a time, filing, shredding, whatever. There's some OLD stuff in there!

Finished another 8 hrs with organizer yesterday. We finished sorting/purging my current work papers. What a relief. There are more older papers to go through but now I can be functional and much more effective.

We recycled almost a full box of paper and have some ready to shred as well. The rest we put into folders for Need to Do, Want to Do, and Reference. I can get to all the papers in there and can actually hope to get some progress going in the very near future.

What are some others doing out there to be successful?

I have one bin each for each of my kids' school work. We try to process our mail quickly, and we recycle a ton. We've done all the stuff to decrease our junk mail. We have a place for old magazines to go. We're getting better about filing. But still, it's hard to stay on top if it all...

Hi Fellow Paper-holics!

I suffer from the same syndrome - paperaholism. I've been struggling with this forever too.

I have been working with 2 organizers for over 2 months now (every Saturday until we are done organizing my house and my life)...

The first thing they did with me was establish an in-box (I NEVER had one before!!!!!). We go through it every time they are at my house until it is empty. They are helping me to develop my missing skills of forcing myself to go through each item until everything is taken care of.

Another thing I've done very recently is buy a really fast, really easy scanner called NeatDesk. It scans items into searchable PDF files so you can always find what you are looking for after you scan it. I've had it about 2 months and have already eliminated 2 huges boxes of paper from my life.

Another thing I've used for yrs is called Paper Tiger. It is a very easy way to file piles of papers quickly and always be able to find what you are looking for in seconds. It is a software program sold by Monticello Corporation. You can find it online easily. It is worth every penny because it gives you a system to use immediately and is very user friendly. You don't have to sort anything first or scan anything. You just pick up the first piece of paper and put it into the system and the file folder then you can find it forever after. I started with this 7-8 yrs ago and love it. It helped me get a huge handle on my paperaholism. The scanning is moving to the next level of paper removal....

Take care all...

Paper clutter is one of my hugest challenges. I am an artist, so I am forever taking notes of observations about the world, sketching, and journaling. I am recording what I see, wanting to keep it for inspiration. My hope is to somehow categorize it so I have bins or cute baskets to drop them in quickly, so they don't lay around the entire apt! Maybe a file cabinet would be a good idea? I don't think my habit of filling paper will ever change so I suppose organizing it well will be a lifetime challenge for me :) Something I'd like to make fun and user-friendly...

Papers seem to be something of a down fall for me!

I put things on the counter that I don't know what to do with and then the counter gets COVERED in 'stuff' and then the kitchen looks really bad. I need to find a method that works to clear the papers.(figure out what to keep and where to keep it and toss the rest!)

Paper, paper, give me more paper... I love paper. But it does mound up to be mountains after a while. I feel really silly when I come across a coupon that expired in 1998... My goal right now is to file the papers on my computer desk. (Who knows, I might even find a couple missing CDs in the process)

Tomorrow is another chance

When I take it out of my purse, I pay it and file it immediately. I can grab a handful of past due filing and work on it. Between now and the end of Oct. I will have my new kitchen set uo and the house in order. I commit to being 134.
