Glad that you were able to get out and bike outside! Hills can be very challenging so good for you for sticking with it. It will get easier the more that you do it. Keep it up!

Went biking for the 1st time in almost a month, yesterday. I went on the road instead of the C&O canal. It was hard for me. The C&O is flat, the road is hilly. I did have to stop and rest a few minutes after 25 min., and then continued on home for a total of 40 min. It was only 5 miles. In spite of it being more difficult, I like biking on the road. I can leave straight from my house instead of loading up the bike in the car, and I like the variety of ups and downs. Both the C&O and on the road are scenic.

Went biking today for 40 min. It won't be warm enough to bike again for about a week. Today was a balmy 68. Tomorrow will be a high of 31.

Went on my first bike ride, today. Only went 30 min., but it is a start. Biked along the C & O canal. There was a lot of ice in the Potomac River.

Good for you. I will start a new challenge for 2018 and you can respond and post on there too if you'd like.

I need to go back to Strava and figure mine out for 2017, but I would guess that I made it pretty easily.

I'm going to start this challenge for 2018. I will be 67 in Jan. so I'll just count any time I ride outside, and as I get stronger, I'll get to 1 hr. rides. Hopefully, I'll still end up with 67 hour long rides

Logging my riding for the week. I actually got to ride quite a bit!

#29-Mon. 6/19--This ride got cut a little short because I got rained on (and thoroughly soaked) on the way back home, but I did get an hour in just barely.

#30-Wed 6/21--Got a ride in tonight after my evening meeting. Rode 18 miles and would've been longer if not for running out of daylight.

#31-Thur 6/22--Riding with the mid-week fast group, it was a really pretty 29 miler, although I again got wet, just not quite as bad as Monday.

#32-Sat 6/24--Bike club ride day. Really a perfect day to ride and we got 22 miles in and enjoyed loaded baked potatoes and ice cream afterwards.

#33-Sun 6/25--Did a metric century of 62 miles (63 by my bike computer, but who's counting, LOL) with DBF and another friend of mine. The wind was really brutal today during stretches that we were heading into it and the second half or so of the route was also very hilly. I am beat!

Yes I did ride with the group tonight-about 21 miles for #28. It was a bit warmer than it had been so that, and the hilly ride made it a bit of a struggle tonight. I can't get used to how different it is from my bike club. I get that some people are faster than others, but I finished the last 10 miles of the ride by myself tonight because everybody just took off and I might as well have been riding solo from home. Wish I could find a group just a smidge slower.

You sound so much like me. My husband and son are quite the runners so I'm often on the sidelines supporting them too! Bummer that conditions and your riding partner have curtailed some of your riding plans. Did you do the club ride today? Love to know how it went.

I'm in the Western New York area so we've had the heat wave here too. I try to get out early in the morning. Got some 20+mile rides in last Saturday and today. Going to a different club ride location tomorrow. Closer to home but more hilly. We'll see how this one goes and what type of riders are there.

I hope you enjoy the trip. Have you made any decisions on the ride in the Finger Lakes? Maybe I'll private message you going forward since I feel like we're getting way off topic for this post LOL! TTYS.

Hi Sandy--Thanks for the kudos on the time trial results. That is exactly what the guy who set up the time trial said--you are competing against yourself, not against the others. You did great with the half marathon. Just finishing on a hot day like that is an achievement. I have gone with my DBF to some of his runs and walked the shorter distance race (usually about 5K). This weekend there was a mile race and I walked that and actually won an award!

I didn't ride at all this weekend, mainly because it has gotten so dang hot and I don't do well in a lot of heat. I was supposed to ride with a friend this afternoon, but I found out yesterday she broke her toe and can't get her cycling shoe on. I feel bad for her but wasn't looking forward to riding in 90 degree weather. I am hoping to ride with the group on Tuesday though. I will be out of town from Thur to Sunday so won't be riding then either. DBF is doing a run up Mt. Washington in NH--it is 7.65 miles all uphill. I am driving the car that will bring him and two other runners back down.

I forgot what part of the country you live in? I am in the southwest part of Michigan. I also very much enjoy having an on-line cycling friend! I hope that you are able to get some more riding in this week. I got really spoiled with a couple of weeks of upper 60s and low 70s weather, which IMO is perfect for cycling! Ready for it to go back to that.

Hey Deb. So proud of your results with the time trial course. That's awesome!! I'd love to hear how your time is the next time you run it. Also remember that you should not compare your pace to others, only to yourself. You are out there doing it which is more than most people can say. I learned to tell myself this last year when I was training for my first half marathon. My goal was just to finish in under 3 hrs and not be last...LOL. I felt so slow but others kept telling me that at least I was doing it and they were right.BTW I finished in 2 hrs 47 min on an 88 degree day so I was super happy.

Now back to biking. I used to use Map my ride but when I started running I realized MMRide did not let me track pace only mph, so that's why I switched. I didn't like Strava, it was too much social media.

Exciting update from my club ride yesterday! I swallowed my fears and went out yesterday with the fast group! Learned to ride in the pace line and got my best pace 35 miles avg 17.5 mph! I was so excited and the group was great to not drop me. They typically would have done about 18.5 but backed off a little so I didn't drop. What a confidence builder for me but now I'm exhausted!

I do need to tell you how much I appreciate having you as an on-line cycling friend!! It's so great to have someone to swap stories, ideas and successes with so thank you for that! Weather is improving hear this next week so I hope to get more riding in. Enjoy!

Sandy--so far I've been using the Map My Ride app. Some of my other riding friends use Strava. I guess Runkeeper is probably similar to one or both of those. I may switch some time, but probably not in the middle of the season.

I got another ride in tonight so I think that makes #27 for me. It was a pretty hilly ride so was quite challenging. I hung with the "slower" group pretty well tonight. I also rode on Tuesday but it was a little under an hour so doesn't count for BYA. It was pretty cool though because we did a repeat of the time trial course that one of the guys in our group set up. I already bettered my time by 2 minutes 21 seconds over what I had done 3 weeks earlier. Will be interesting to see how I do when we run it again in the fall. I am not fast compared to most of these people so I am going for the "most improved" award, LOL.

Actually I have to get up to 55 (my age) so I am almost at the halfway mark! I didn't start seriously riding until about 4 years ago, so I'm sure I am way better now than I was back then.

I need to add up my mileage and I will let you know where I stand. Are you tracking rides and/or mileage?

You are doing amazing !!! Great job on the miles. Keep on riding. If your 46 yrs old then you hit the bike your age mark. Please keep me updated on your mileage. Love to hear how the season is going. Especially since it's been so wet/cold here in the NorthEast hard to find dry nice days to ride. Hopefully will get better soon.

Sounds like you are getting in a good bit of mileage as well!

I am getting behind on logging my rides for the last week or so. And I have been taking advantage of good weather and riding! Here we go:

#21--19 mile ride with good riding buddy on 5/28. We rode in town some so it was not a real tough ride.

#22--46 mile ride on Memorial Day with DBF. We rode on a great paved bike path for most of this ride. It runs parallel with a rode going north along Lake Michigan.

#23--21 mile ride with my "fast" bike group ib 5/30. Almost didn't go because my legs were tired from the day before.

#24--32 mile ride with "fast" group. It was a really pretty and scenic route. Smaller group this night (6/1) so we pretty much all stayed together.

#25--19 mile bike club ride. Very hilly--they made us work hard for our tacos yesterday (6/3).

#26--17 mile leisurely ride with DBF today.

So glad to be finally getting some miles in!

Deb

Nice job on the mileage. Sounds like your getting your legs ( and butt😃😃) prepped for your goals this summer. I got a nice 27 miler in this week. Over 70 miles this week. I'd like to start doing 100 miles per week but training for some runs too so not sure how that will go.

I really had to work for #20 last night. We rode a little over 29 miles and boy do my legs feel it. Almost to the point where I'm not sure I want to ride today. If I do it will be shorter, and not too hard of a ride.

I've got 2 more rides to add to my total, even though the weather hasn't been real cooperative. Last week Thursday, I rode with my "fast' group and we did a 14 mile "time trial" (just competing against yourself) and then a 5 mile cooldown.

Then after the Saturday bike club ride got cancelled because of weather, DBF and I got in a 15 miler on Sunday.

So that makes #18-19. I am getting there! Hope to get a few more rides in during the next few days because the weather is supposed to be better and I will be off for 4 days over Memorial Day weekend.

I have gotten in 4 more rides since the last time I posted. On 5/11 I did a group ride of about 21 miles. Then last Saturday I did two separate rides. In the morning DBF and I and another friend rode close to 17 miles to an Amish bakery and back. A lot of that ride is on a paved bike trail so that was nice. Later that afternoon I went and rode with my bike club for about 18 miles. It was interesting because this time we rode on some routes that were new to us. (So of course we needed maps!)

Then this past Tuesday I went on a group ride that was a pretty tough 27 miles, It was hilly and windy, and of course with this group I got dropped eventually, although I did meet up with some of them towards the end. Luckily I knew the roads we were on so I didn't get lost. It was probably the hottest ride I have done this year since it was in the mid-80s.

So I guess that makes rides #14-15-16-17 for me. Anyone else still counting?

Finally got to ride outdoors on Saturday, although it was still a bit cool and very windy. But there was a bike club ride scheduled so DBF and I and one of his friends rode the 14 mile route. A few others rode an 8 mile route. It really wasn't that cold and only difficult when we were going into the wind or had a strong cross wind for a bit.

It took a little over an hour so that is another one I can count towards this BYA challenge (#13).

Hi Sandy-Hope you have still been able to bike this past week or so. After some really good weather mid-April, I thought I was in a good groove for riding. But this past week I haven't even been on my bike because the weather has been cold, windy, and rainy. I actually went and did a spin class on Tues night and probably tonight as well. Hope I won't have lost too much by the time I can ride regularly again!

I think 28 miles has been my longest so far this year. Sounds like you are on a good pace for your ride in May. Keep us up on how you are doing!

#12 was a pretty rough one last night. More wind than I expected and it was the longest group ride of the year so far--almost 28 miles. I was really wiped out after that. There are some people in the group I know I will never keep up with and that's OK, but there are some others that I "should" be able to keep up with and still don't. Mind you my computer said that I averaged about 14.9 mph, so that's not really super-slow. Hopefully it makes me a better rider in the long run.

Good weekend of riding concluded on a beautiful spring day riding 24 miles out in the country with my DBF. I have to give him props since I was riding my road bike and he was proudly riding the single speed bike that he recently finished building. Don't think I would've wanted to do some of those hills without being able to switch gears! S

So that makes #11 for me. Maybe if I keep this up I can do my age twice this year! It's a thought.

And the beat goes on! Another ride in the books in spite of some issues with the sensor on my bike computer. By the time I got it fixed I had lost about 4 miles or so on it. But we rode for about an hour and a half so it will count as #10 with about 22 miles or so.

Riding again on Sat with the bike club.

Beautiful day for a ride today and rode 23 miles with my riding group. Felt pretty good today, so hopefully getting stronger. That makes 9 rides and counting. Hoping the rain will quit in time on Thursday when we are scheduled to ride again.

Hope everyone else is starting to get out and get riding!

I must have missed counting one somewhere along the way, because according to the Map My Ride app, I have 8 rides now. Oh well, I was planning to make this goal pretty handily anyway.

Yesterday I was actually going to ride at the cycling studio, but they were closed for some reason and luckily I then got a text from a gal in the one group I ride with and she said that despite the short notice they were going to ride that evening, so that worked out great. It is still tough riding with some of them as most of them are pretty fast riders. But I hung in there and got 22 miles in. Weather-permitting, we will be riding regularly again starting next week.

How is everyone else doing?

I am 53 this year so I'd better get a wiggle on.

I have had 17 1 hour or 1 hour plus rides this year so far. 36 to go then. All my rides have been outside as I don't have a turbo trainer.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.

LUV2BIKE101-Yay! Glad you are up for the challenge! Mine will start out slow too due to the colder weather. The only reason I have that many so far is because it was unseasonably warm a couple weekends ago and I rode for three straight days, but not since then (outside). But I think it is very doable.

Keep us up with how you are doing!

Sounds like a fun challenge! Because of the wintry weather in my area, I've been riding indoors on a trainer for an hour every day. So, I will challenge myself further to count only outdoor rides.

Thanks for sharing this challenge!

I heard about a challenge that a local bike shop was doing and I thought it would be fun to do. It is called BYA-Bike Your Age. Whatever your age is, your goal is to get that many one hour rides during the calendar year. (If your ride is longer than an hour, it still only counts as one.) Doesn't matter how fast you ride, just that you ride. I don't know what the original intention was, but I'm only going to count outdoor rides.

So for me, I will soon be 55 so that is my goal. According to my MapMyRide app, I have 4 rides in so far this year counting towards my 55. (You don't have to have an app, you can just keep track of it manually if you want to.)

Anyone who wants to join in, just chime in, and keep us posted on your progress! Ready, set, go!
