Overall, I've been doing better at exercise this winter in comparison to past winters. But you wouldn't know it when you look at some of my days as samples. I'm still having days of 2000 - 3000 steps, just fewer of them.

It's sunny and not so cold today. I hope to take the dogs for a walk this afternoon. emoticon

It is so easy to go to the comfort food in the winter. For me, it's also easy to not get much exercise. I have to work on that!
Sorry this challenge fell apart - I've been struggling with some things at work, so I haven't been as focused as I should be. But today's a new day!

Yes, I do think I'm pretty good at estimating carb amounts. I will measure stuff/recipes that I haven't made before to be more accurate. My diet is somewhat limited, so I pretty much eat the same things every day. I know I've been eating more potatoes and cheese than I should lately. That's kind of a winter trap I fall in I think.

I get that - I spent so much time at the computer trying to track everything. But it is a good exercise to see what it is you're actually taking in. I confess I fell off the challenge band wagon about halfway through the week. Going to try again this week, and add another good eating habit to the practice.

I think doing the measuring thing for a while also helps develop your sense of amounts - so you can start eyeballing it with some accuracy. :-)

Yay for veggies!

I don't log my food anymore. I spent years measuring and calculating my carbs when I was first diagnosed with diabetes. It was very beneficial for me in terms of learning nutrient content of foods but not something I could sustain in the long term. I'm going for a more intuitive style of eating these days. I also went grain free this summer, so my meals are basically a protein with some veggies or fruit.

Day two - better balance of macronutrients, but boy, did I blow it on sodium - almost twice the recommended daily amount. Note to self - watch out for those processed foods!

Didn't get a chance to pack lunch for today, so had to grab something from the convenience store. Probably going to be another bad sodium day.

Going to go shopping tonight to restock the fresh veges.

Day one is in the books!

So, I only looked at my total calories last night - right on point. Looked a little closer this morning - the balance of nutrients was not so good. High on fat, low on protein and fiber. I also fell quite short on all the micro nutrients.

I actually turned some leftovers into a stew to bring to work for lunch this week. Hopefully the added vegetables will result in better numbers today.

Twins pitchers and catchers report in three weeks, and the first spring training game is just over a month away. As 'our boys' get ready for the baseball season, let's step up our efforts to get healthier! Each week, let's challenge ourselves to develop one new healthy practice, By the time the Twins are in Fort Myers, we'll have several good new habits working for us!

Let's start with something easy: keeping that food journal! I know I struggle with recording everything, so I'm guessing some of you do, too. So my challenge to you is: keep an accurate food log for this week. You can use the SparkPeople log, or keep a notebook - what ever works best for you. But keep track of your food intake. Share what you're learning about your eating habits on this thread.

If you are already a champion log keeper - you can still participate by sharing your experience with your less experienced teammates. C'mon, be our Torii Hunter!

Looking forward to seeing how everyone does. Let me know if you have ideas for weeks 2-4.

Play Ball! emoticon
