I think the biggest thing we (myself, husband & 3 y.o. daughter) need to work on is planning. We never seem to know what we're cooking for dinner. So we sit down to family meals, but they're not typically healthy. Or we stop by the grocery store on the way home and have no idea what to shop for. Same with exercise--by the time I think about it, the day is over. So I think:
(1) Plan out some meals & be more conscious of involving my daughter in the planning/cooking process (which will limit her tv watching after preschool)
(2) Limit television watching in the evening after our daughter goes to bed so my husband and I can be more active
(3) Family walks around the block 3x week.

I have lost thirty pounds and am feeling so much better. I want the joy of health (and I know I am only beginning to reap the benefits of this) to reach my family members. I want to make healthier choices and be supported too, but my biggest goal is for them to experience what I have experienced over the past six months.... then it will be self perpetuating.

Goals for this week: go to the gym once as a family, golf or bike once, cook a healthy meal 3x everyone will enjoy and sit down to eat it together at the table.

It took me a week to get focused on this, but I think I'm getting there!

My daughter is in college, so hard to include her in my goals, but I may put together a cheat sheet of quick and simple foods she can cook as she is living off campus for the first time.

My son is very active and has a high metabolism, so if anything, he wants to put on weight. He's very tall and lanky, so this isn't a bad thing.

My husband and I could stand to do more exercise. I'm in a routine of exercising frequently - he, only once per week.

So with all that, my goals are:
1. Continue our family meals - we do very well at this.
2. But, make sure we have a balanced meal - more fruits and more veges.
3. Start back up strength training - for all of us in the house
4. Continue to pick one meal per week that maybe wasn't so healthy, and make it better!

My personal goals for my family is to have them understand how important it is to be active. We are going to try to eat out less. We live a very busy life. To start this week I am going to plan our meals and not eat out at all.

I'm starting over again as I did not do very well the previous time. My goal is to truly focus more on healthy eating for me & DH and more healthy home cooking.

My goals are to get my family to eat healthier and stopping staring at that boob tube for any lenghts of time. My son is just starting to go through puberty and I think it is important for him to eat healthy so he can build the muscles he wants. For my husband I am hoping he will pick up on some of my traits and does not end up like all the men in his family that have heart attacks before they turn 45. So far I have cut TV time and got them both up and moving with one thing or another.

The reason I joined this challenge is twofold: First, to help my daughter develop better habits. Second, to include her in my journey to get healthy. I don't want her feeling left out (and she will!).

Our goals for the first week are:
1. to cut her "screen time" to 1/2 hr. nightly,
2. to exercise together 3 times per week, and
3. to organize the kitchen better; ie. regularly make weekly meal plans and grocery lists.

When she comes home from her dad's Monday evening, we're going to have a family meeting to roll all this out. She's been very supportive of my goals; it's going to be fun to see how she reacts to this new game plan!!

As myself and my family tend to shirk change....we are going to take this slow! Our first challenge as a family is to not eat after 8 pm. This is a tough one! You can't imagine the whining that has been going on the past couple of nights...mostly from my hubby...LOL! The second is exercise...3 days a week, for each person! WHEW! We can do it!

My goals are to: 1) get my son motivated to be responsible for his own health 2) start making healthy choices as a family( ie not allowing his desire for fast food to influence our menu) 3) increase exercise as a family(my son participates in NOTHING outside of the home) 4) curb his not stop eating( I kid you not the boy ate 5 apples after school yesterday...he eats all the time)

We have a lot of good things going on in our family, but I want to make sure nobody gets left out and that we support each other along the way. As I mentioned in my introduction, I do not want my children to end up with all of the health and physical issues that I have struggled with for so long--and since I am getting better and better, our working together will help me become an active participant rather than a pathetic bystander.

My goals are fairly simple:
1. Everyone will participate in some form of fitness activities regularly--and we will do some of these as a family at least once a week.
2. We will share in household duties that are physical in nature and support each other in completing them--this includes yard work--and everyone has some duty daily.
3. Each meal will include a minimum of one fruit or veggie and our big evening meal will include at least two veggies and a fruit, of which 2 of them will be fresh.
4. Everyone will be encouraged to weigh themselves privately once a week.

These things will help us all to have a better quality of life--nutritionally, socially, physically, and environmentally. This will be awesome!!

Nutrition--
1. make sure to pack a fruit and a veggie in my son's lunchbox.
2. Serve AT LEAST 1 veggie for dinner and 1 fruit for snacks.
3. Offer water FIRST when my son is thirsty.

Exercise--
1. Get my son involved in walking our 3 dogs daily. Heaven knows I'm tired of being tangled up with all those leashes!!
2. My son participates in gymnastics and karate, but is lazy about practicing at home. I will practice (to the best of my ability) with him.
3. Make an incentive chart to record the days we practice.

Meal time--
1. Eat at least 3 meals a week as a family.
2. MAKE my son eat breakfast; explore breakfast options he will like.

Screen time--
This will be the hardest. Maybe my son can earn screen time by doing the above mentioned things--walking the dogs, practicing his sports, eating breakfast, etc?

WOW this is A LOT of new changes. I don't think I'll be able to do it all in one week, but I'll at least give it a shot. :)

My goal is to get my family involved in my weight loss journey. My kids are very active. The two older 6 and 4 are in soccer so they have practice and games to go to. My little ones 2 and 8 months run around all day. They watch a little too much TV, but that is mostly my fault. I turn it on so I can shower or clean. they average 3-4 hrs a day. Except my oldest who is in school and does not watch but 1 hr a day. my younger one doesn't watch any (lol). I want to get our eating healthier, although my kids LOVE fruits and veggies, they still snack on crackers and such all day (sneak them when mom is with the baby). I basically want my husband to get healthy he already has high blood pressure (he's 29) and about 30 lbs over weight. I would love to see us all get out together to hike, walk, or whatever else to get hubby and me thinner and healthier. I have about 30-40 lbs to lose(stubborn baby weight) and need to get my muscles back to normal after so many kids :)

we almost always eat dinner together, so that is not a problem, but eating healthy can be a challenge. my hubby is stays at home, but doesn't cook, and I don't get home until 5... so I am working on a menu that is 'easy' but healthy too. Portion control is something to think about too... hubby is a skinny minnie, but I am not, and my teenage son eats and eats but doesn't gain, but my 11 yr old daughter is on the heavy side. I think sometimes she tries to eat as much as her brother does as a challenge. We are having a family meeting tonite, so we will discuss that for sure.
family excercise? that is a hard one. with school starting there is limited time during the week and I have foot problems, but I want us to try to walk or something at least on the weekends when I don't work

We are going to reduce screen time in our house, have a meeting about changes coming up, and continue to walk my guy to school every day that the weather allows.

Our goals as a family are to be more active together. The kids are in great shape, but they are teenagers and don't want to spend as much time as a family. We already eat dinner as a family every night, which we all love. Healthy meals are already on the menu, but I want to teach the kids more about why some things are healthier than others.

I had a talk with DH last night because our 3 kids are 3 and under. So we made the decision that no tv time between 4:30 and 7 at night, and between 9 and 11 in the morning. I am a STHM so I am here all day with the kiddos. I do noticed how much tv we watch because we used to not have tv, and I would get so much more done in a day. My other goal is to get a little bit more organized (I already am semi organized) but that way it helps the family flow better.

My daughter that lives at home is 13. She is so plugged into some sort of electronic media that it's scary. I want to limit her "screen time" so that we can get active but also so that we can have at least a little time together. My husband is at least 100 lbs overweight and I'm really worried about his health. He says if I will cook healthy he'll eat it. Those are my main goals for week 1. And also to get organized about menu planning and an organized grocery list.

Since our son is 3...my husband and I have made most of the decisions for this challenge. I have always been a pretty healthy eater, but he is not a fan of vegetables. He's promising to be more open and try new foods. I look forward to it! I've been doing a lot of research on the amounts of each food group that we should be eating & hoping to incorporate everything together for a healthier family & life!

We had a family meeting last night and the kids agree to everything but it's very hard to explain to them about "healthy eating". None of them are over weight so I just explained the benefits of eating healthy and how this will especially help them as they get older. (They are teenagers and think they will never get old or pack on a couple of extra pounds) I just don't feel like they really get this part or care about it but they are willing to try anything! But we agreed to:
1. Eating as a family every night. (We usually do this anyways)
2. They will take turns helping to prepare dinner and help clean the kitchen 3 times a week.
3. Everyone will eat a healthy snack after school/work.

I am not expecting any miracles, but I want to look and feel better in a month. In 4 weeks one of my daughters (Kandi) is getting married and the next day moving to Kentucky (from Las Vegas, Nevada) to start her new life. My other daughter (Kandi's twin Kim) is really having a hard time with this. We are all feeling the stress of getting close to the wedding and trying to make sure all of the details are taken care of and paid for. I am a stress eater. Stress is taking it's toll on how all 3 of us are feeling. So, We thought this might be a good way for all of us to deal with this stress together and give us a bit of a distraction, too. And we all keep talking about wanting to walk or get active somehow, so I am hoping this will be some motivation for us!

1. Cut television time back drastically, we tend to leave it on for background noise.

2. Sit down and discuss ways to eat and live healthier that we can both agree upon and stick too. We will check in a few times each week.

3. Start a exercise regimen.

4. Plan out some meals and really work on portion control.

I am an emptynester. I have been a member of sparkpeople for almost three years, I have lost 30 pounds, but the last 20 pounds have been a struggle.

My husband is severely obese and is not really up to changing his lifestyle, I am hoping to get some tips to subtly help him get healthier.

Hi all, I have 2 daughters, 2 and 4 now and my goal is to teach them to eat healthy and be active from the start so they don't have to go the tough root when they're older. If they learn good habits now; later will come easily to them.

I find that if I make different soups all the time I can get them to eat any veggie I add in there, I find that kids tend to LOVE soups for some reason. Especially if you add something fun like alphabets or stars into it. My daughters just spent their summer vacation on an island so they were at the beach often so the pasta of choice in our soups right now are shells!

We have two kids, ages 15 months and almost 3 years. Finding foods that my toddlers will eat is, honestly, a crap shoot some nights. I joined this team to hopefully get some ideas for kid-approved healthy meal choices and encouragement as I try to increase my kiddos exposure to an active lifestyle.

this week I plan to:

**get my first floor (kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry room, half bath and entry way) cleaned and organized.

**get outside with my kids for at least a couple of hours every day, to play in the yard or at the park, and to go for walks in the evening.

**get us all up and around earlier in the mornings, so we can get to the gym in time for a good workout BEFORE work, so that I can get home at a decent time in the evenings.

**get home from work no later than 5:00pm.

**Make a detailed meal plan and grocery list for the week!

**start the running list on the fridge for items we need to buy on our next trip to the store.

**limit my own time on the computer at night...starting tomorrow...in bed by 11pm!

my goals for this week are 1.)to get my kids more active/to reduce "screen" time. I had a discussion with my kids yesterday about the importance of being healthy not "skinny". we talked about how the insides of your body need to function properly. and 2.) i also want to clean out my food pantry.

Goals for week 1: I really want to get the family meeting going so that everyone can be on board. I want to reduce screen time and have my kids (ages 7 and 10) be more involved in meal planning and prep so that they learnt he habits. Neither of my kids have a weight problem but they do have a screen addiction. I would love to target that and increase our family activity levels!

Goals for week one:
Family meeting- we've had several informal meetings, usually during our family walks, to discuss my "work" on spark people and getting the whole family on board. Our daughter is only four months old so we want to make sure she grows up with healthy habits.

We have resumed our sit down family dinners. Zoey goes in the baby seat on the kitchen floor next to us and usually just watches what we're doing. She seems to find it entertaining. I cooked a home made meal several times this week, trying to make sure we eat veggies. One night I made pork chops but instead of starchy sides I made sauteed mushrooms and roasted cherry tomatoes. Another night I made a healthy version sole francaise w/ garlic sauteed spinach (delicious!!) And we've started saying grace together again.

We have also been making an effort to do several family dog walks together (although the heat and humidity is making this difficult). And we have been turning off the TV at times to read in peace and quiet and spend time with Zoey. We are talking about a tv free week but this is still up for debate emoticon

My goal is to make my whole family realize the importance of getting healthier. When we all do this together, we all have a greater chance of success and staying on track. Who wants to cook two different meals a day anyway?

My name is Tami and I've just joined the challenge. I lost about 60 lbs. 5 years ago. My husband and I are in our early 50's and raising our second "crop" of kids--ages 19,14 and 11.
As a family we decided to work on our health and my husband has lost over 40 lbs., our 19 year old over 50 lbs. and our 14 year old daughter has lost about 20 lbs. Our 11 year old didn't have a weight problem but I've worked on educating him on good eating.
Lately it seems everyone has lost their drive, so I thought this would be a good chance to remotivate them.
My goals are to incorporate our physical activity into their PE class (I'm a homeschooling mom) and to
get them to compare the time spent in activity to time in front of a computer or tv. (We already had this monitored but I want to take another step.)
We had a family discussion about taking steps forward. This week we're working on more water and fruit in our diet.
I already dip their food off the stove and measure it for them but want to encourage them to do more of that for themselves so they're taking control.
When I told them I'd joined the kids seemed alarmed that the whole world was in on our family quest so I'm hoping to get them to see everyone here as buddies-not people invading their diet! emoticon
I've already been motivated by other people's posts!

Hi Everyone! I have joined in and getting back to basics. I use to have family dinners a lot and the kids really enjoyed it but I have allowed too much to interfere with my life and so I stopped cooking. I am getting back to it. So this week, Family meals! TV is not much of a problem here but the computers are. So, we will monitor that area and make corrects as necessary!

Hi everyone. My name is Candice and I have to say that the number one reason that I joined this team is because I not only want my children to learn to be more active but I want us to learn to enjoy each other. Meaning, sitting in front of a TV or computer is just mindless waste of time. I want us to play together and enjoy each others company. To actually spend time together. And if we get more fit in the process thats all the better.

My reason for joining this challenge was to get ideas for things I can try with my family. We are active in our house (which is good) and we only have one television. Lately I've realized that the computers/ipads/iphones/DSI are now taking the place of TV and I have less control of those because they can move around the house! My goal this week is to be aware of when the family is using screen time.

Another reason that I joined was to get ideas for meals/household activities. The kids really like helping in the kitchen and if I think ahead with ideas for them to participate in meal planning and prep it makes dinner so much better.

Today I will track my food and exercise. This I will do for myself.

it's hard enough to exercise much less having to do it outside - that's my problem. I vow to take a walk every day.
walking is good and my daughter and i enjoy spending time together. we are silly and laugh a lot.

live, laugh, love
