This week, my goals are:
*Finish housework that I've been putting off.
*Take time out to relax and make plans for the next day.
*Continue yoga which seems to help me destress.

98% of life is just showing up - I'm ready to start showing up for myself and stop living in my own shadow.

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

My goal is to live in the present and not worry about the past or future.

Everything happens for a purpose and in it's own time even if we can't understand it now.

I want my life to be an exciting adveture. Like looking into a kaleidoscope and expecting to see something beautiful and unexpected. Carol

My goal is to really get to know what my specific triggers are, both at work and with some family members-- so that I can be proactive to minimize the stress, versus reactive after it's already begun to build.

I have a choice.

When I believe in myself, others will too!

Still really trying to destress. Haven't journaled all week. Journaling is a stressor for me. I just hate to do it. Can anyone suggest an alternative that I might actually do. Never was good at that. Never kept a diary as a kid. I am getting exercise and yoga in almost daily. Choosing better food but having trouble with the journaling part. Thanks.

I have been struggling with managing stress from work. My job is quite demanding, especially lately many leaving the firm, many are left with working double shift. In addition, few months ago, I received a new assignment with a new boss, who is extremely critical. There were many occasions where she made hurtful comments. Regardless, even though sometimes I make conscious efforts to not listen to her, but more and more I found myself to grow more stressed. I noticed that in the morning, I start to wake up and my mind is filled with horrifying thoughts about the to-dos that I have not completed, and instantly my body is covered with sweats. This is absolutely not the way I want to live my life. When my husband said to me, "you're killing yourself," I realize that I need to change. I can't change my boss, and I have no intention of running away from bullies. I need to change how I perceive life and deal with the negativity in it. This is why I joined this challenge. I believe I can alleviate the stress from work by doing the following:

1) Exercise (at least moderate intensity) on a more regular basis (i.e., three times a week)
2) Practice yoga at least three times a week
3) Practice meditation (even just 15 minutes a day).

I have some doubt as to the effectiveness, but this is better than not doing anything. I had enough and I need to do something.

I do not stress easily - and many things I have to deal with are 'off the scale' for many people. I amy not be able to alter the things that cause stress in my life, but I can find strategies to prevent myself getting ill.

Week One

1. Visualisation/relaxation exercises (a technique I use - I visualise myself boxing up my problems and putting them away, then locking them in a cupboard. Then I walk out of the room, down stairs and out of the door into the woods - then I either walk though long grassy meadows, float in a fresh secluded woodland pool or wander the woods. I focus on the textures, the smells and warmth/coolness. It means I can put aside the problems and deal with them tomorrow - and properly relax.)

2. Fresh air every day.

3. Have fun - laugh, get out of the house, act silly, whatever!

Hi! I joined this SparkTeam because I know that my stress levels are high, and that I have difficulties coping with my stress. After reading the material, my goals are as follows:

-Stress Journal at least 3 times a week but shooting for daily.
-Meditation for 10 minutes daily.

I think I will build up as we go along.

My challenge goals for this week:
-To realize that yes, I deserve some me time each day - and to make sure I get at least 15 minutes.
-To look into, and hopefully, start some yoga.
-Not to be my adult kids (and husbands) enabler - why can't any of them of them do things for themselves anymore? Because I always take care of it for them. And that's not helping any of us.
Patty

I know I can - and this time I WILL!

My goals are to continue drinking 4 glasses of water a day. I know it sounds weak, but I have to do what I can, how I can. And I want to avoid hard alcohol during the week, only wine. And I want to get in 2 17 minute treadmill walks in a week. Again, I know it sounds like I could do more than that, but honestly, right now, this is just right for me. Oh, and I want to meditate/pray before bed and when I get up, but I need to think of some reminder because I keep forgetting about it. Maybe a note on my nightstand. emoticon

Of the four challenges I have joined this is going to be the most challenging one.

A day ofcourse only has 24 hours. No news there, but I have 3 jobs to manage.

So my goals are to learn a few tricks to bring the stress level to a lower level.

Every season has its charm.

Goals:
-walk everyday with my dog, not focusing on time or distance, just that I'm getting out and doing it
-follow through for one week on tracking my food and exercise. I'll worry about the next week when it gets here :)
-be open with my husband when I am feeling stressed or frustrated instead of just saying "nothing's wrong" and then blowing up at him later for something silly
-start writing down when I am feeling stressed, frustrated, overwhelmed, etc and what is happening at that moment that is making me feel that way.

My goals to get rid of stress are:
-Get more sleep! I am going to be in serious trouble if I don't.
-Stop worrying so much about getting things done when in reality I have plenty of time to do them... my mind just doesn't seem to know it.
-Quit worrying so much about what other people think of me and start worrying about the things that are important to ME.
-Try to start the day with a positive thought (even though mornings just aren't my thing).
-Relax through meditation and listening to soothing music.

I knit also. Haven't for a while and need to pick it back up. At least if my hands are busy knitting they can't be putting food in my mouth! I crochet and tat also and used to find it enjoyable. It is a good stress reliever.

My goals are:
1. Go for a walk every day. I never did this before, because I wanted someone to come with me, and no one would. Now I'm really enjoying the time on my own.
2. Knit for 30min. a day. MIndless knitting helps to soothe me, and the not so mindless knitting like lace or colourwork, helps me practice my focus.
3. Stop imagining, and worrying about ridiculous "what ifs" that are so unlikely to happen.
4. Stop caring so much about what everyone else thinks.
5. Stop to look at the big picture. How important is this "crisis" in reality?

From reading over my stress journals and just giving it more thought about the kind of stress I am dealing with, I think I have figured out a couple of things. First, I need to figure out what stress I can actually manage myself and what stress I really have no control over. I am letting too many things I can't control consume and stress me. I am going to fit yoga back into my life (it always gets pushed to the backburner somehow) and plan on doing yoga 3 times a week. When i was doing it regularly, it helped me control some stress/anxiety. I also plan to keep journaling as I believe that helps me identify triggers & solutions.

My goals for this challenge are...

#1: Letting the stress go and letting it stay gone. No rehashing, no retelling, no bringing it back up. Just letting it go after I have resolved it to the best of my ability.

#2: To stay calm when stress happens, not lose my head over every little thing.

#3: Not blow things out of proportion, things are rarely as bad as they seem at first.

#4: Do not stress about things that are beyond my control (I've almost got this one)

I make time, not excuses.

Well, here I am, week 1 of the Stress Challenge. My goal is to realize I cannot control everything and let go of the stress. I lost a sister to cancer last December and have both a brother and brother in law with cancer this year. Nothing I can do about it but it does stress me. I am going to work out more, pick up the yoga practice I dropped a couple years ago and find som "me" time each day.

I am doing better with DH interrupting me when we are alone. Anything I am doing, I can stop for a bit but today I failed and stressed again. My sister came over with a computer problem. DH interrupted me and I was then in a position of choosing who to help--sister or DH. I stressed because I do not understand why DH puts me in that position. He knows I am busy with someone; he knows I stress when interrupted; once again the interruption was not important. So I sat for a few minutes with my stress level through the roof while I decided how to handle the "interruption."

I am going to try saying to him "Honey, I understand you would like me to deal with this problem you have but it is not a good time. Unless this is an emergency, I am going to finish what I am doing and then I will get help you.

As sweet and wonderful as he is, I am beginning to think that the real problem here is that he needs a lot of attention and needs to know he comes first with me. Perhaps subconsciously he wanted to see if I would stop helping my sister to help him. So it isn't really a problem, I just need to learn how to avoid the stress as I deal with him.

I found the poem:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon:
where there is doubt, faith ;
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
where there is sadness, joy
O divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it's a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they're terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Okay, I think I can see a goal that might be helpful for me to set.

I let myself get stressed when in conversations with people who lean in close and tell me either directly or indirectly how I am feeling. Or say things like, "Oh, you shouldn't feel that way". I try to explain to them that no, that is not what I am feeling and no, that is not what I meant and I find myself wanting to explain myself so as not to be misunderstood. I can feel the stress rising in my brain and shoulders when I do that.

So, my goal is to be able to let people say what they will, to let them be, to love them and not try to explain myself or my words; just let them (my words) go out calmly and if I feel or think I'm being misunderstood to just let it go.

Maybe, when that happens I could say something like; "So can you tell me more about what you believe about this issue?" To be more interested in the other person and to be less interested in being understood myself.

Was it St. Francis who wrote that it is better to understand than to be understood? Yes, that is a beautiful poem. I'm going to go look that up. I think it starts out something like: Lord let me be an instrument of your peace.

Wow, then when we choose to be an instrument of God's peace then God's peace can come into our hearts and minds. Hmmmmm, I like that.

still in week one, & I've sort of got a handle on some of the things that get me going/stressed. Learning to put things in a positive light & doing various stress relievers (deep breathing, knitting & reading) at the same time have helped alot. This week I'm taking a little break - sometimes ya' just gotta say no!

Finish week 1 and kept track the best i could on my stressful events this week. I noticed that at times that the little things trigger me. Also after some major stressful events i totally lose my cool, which i feel real bad about after i have calmed down and realized what i did. I joined this group to try to learn how to deal with my stress better and learned new ways on how to handle my stress. This week i am going to try to focus more on my stress and try to step back and regroup when i get in a stressful situation or when i start getting overwhelmed.

There is so much stress in my life and my job is the hardest one to control. My challenge goal is to learn to better handle the stress of work and my work schedules/deadlines and not let the stress make me feel ill or upset. Thankfully, I don't stress eat anymore but I do need to learn to better manage my reaction to stress.

My biggest weakness is not planning properly and waiting until the last minute to get stuff done. My goal is to make sure that I plan everything important, including workouts and writing time. Hopefully this will help eliminate some stress.....

It's me, Grönare Gräs, here again at the end of Week 1. I've identified main stressors alongside with sleep-related problems and have found that my sleep and stress level are very closely tied together, so stress-reducing related goals are to implement good sleep habits to give me energy to sail a bit lighter through hardship.

Another thing in common in both challenges is the diary-keeping part; I really need to document just a bit more how my levels go up and down because that in turn helps me remind myself of the importance of daily habits of different kinds. In short, I crave stability very much right now.

I didn't think I'd actually be this excited but I am! Maybe it's because I feel like I'm not a victim but rather the boss finally taking the control I both need and deserve as part of being kind to myself. Yay. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I joined this challenge to figure out some ways to try to handle stress better. I hope to be able to find ways to manage my stress and less need to see a therapist to talk about things.

When I am busy with something, anything, it stresses me to be interrupted but interruptions do happen and nearly always it is DH. I want to just accept it, focus on DH and deal with the interruption, take a couple of slow breaths, and then return to what I was doing.
