Many people wonder why their children are denied services. And think it may be because their children's IQ's are too high. In fact it has more to do with the level of their functioning than their diagnosis or IQ. There are many people both young and old who have Asperger's, who test out with high IQ's but have a lower level of functioning. These are the one's that get seevices. It is all about level of functioning. Parents and doctors must show evidence of difficulty functioning. This also show up during testing if you are concerned about not getting services, look into what behaviors are interfering with day to day functioning. If your child is having serious difficulty with feeding themselves, if they have a violent temper that interferes with them interacting with their peers or adults, or are unable to communicate their needs, this is a good place to start your research. Just having a hard time making friends or not getting good grades is not something that will get them services.

I am just starting to learn about high functioning autism / aspergers. Regardless of the label it is given I am just grateful to have a diagnosis and places to go for info and support.

Currently I am looking for support for myself as a mother of a recently diagnosed son, daughter of a stage 5-6 ahlzheimers mother, and an individual facing many other personal struggles. I have been on and off again with my weightloss journey and I know I have to take care of my health in order to take care of others. I am, however struggling in recent months to stay focused on my health. Instead of winning what feels like a battle at this time I have been repeatedly sabotaging myself.

I don't know what the fuss is about. Asperger's is on the Autism Spectrum and always has been. The most common thread runs through all Autism is "Theory of Mind". The ability to perceive other peoples intentions and perspectives. It's a perceptual problem. There is a large community of family members and people with Asperger's that believe Asperger's is not on the spectrum and now it is. They have been living in denial. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. It's still a rose and so does Autism.

I'm still learning all this myself so not sure what this means yet. I hope it is good and not bad.

I can definitely understand your frustration and anger. I am just about as hopeful as a six leaf clover! As soon as I heard them combining the two forms of Autism, I knew and believed then it was for the money too. Anyway they can cut cost on things they choose. I hate that Autism is the one disability to take this cut because it is more prevalent now than ever.

Yup, regardless of what Obama promises or says, there will be less funding. Again, not big on speeches, show me the $$$$$

State to state though it changes and can be more difficult to get help, support and funding. I suggest linking up with some of your local support groups for parents who have special needs children.

Best,

I can't be hopeful. I truly believe this change is partly politically driven to avoid having to fund some disabilities. I'm guessing that regardless of what the President SAID....we're going to find far less money for kids who have good IQs. That means that anyone with Asperger's is going to be excluded. Having just gone through a state reassessment with my daughter, and beign rejected for continuing services because she can "function" I have little hope.

I can't see a light at the end of the tunnel....yet.

I'm not sure how I feel. I am still trying to learn about autism but I was told my son leans strongly to the Asperger's end of the spectrum.

A decision to include Asperger's disorder within the autism spectrum is concerning parents of children with the condition but an area doctor says the change should benefit patients.
