Like I said in my status today, WOW! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I submitted a question about the issue below on the Yoqi website just yesterday, and had 2 replies waiting for me early this morning! The first was a standard one about how Marissa (the founder of the site, instructor on the videos) is too busy to answer individuals, but I can check FAQs and consult my PCP. But the second was from Marissa herself, who gave me an answer and said she added it to the site FAQs for practice, and thanked me! Amazing! Here's info on her

"The standing postures reveal where we hold unnecessary tension or have weakness. This is not a bad thing, it is a great opportunity to help you heal. The more your practice and address the blockages the stronger you will get. In this case, you can lower your arms, relax and then raise them up again when you feel ready. To help strengthen your joints there are other Qigong exercises that will help you, such as Spring Series Purge, Tonify and Circulate. Also the Yi Jin Jing is amazing for the joints."

I found another great practitioner on YouTube--Dr. Jo, a PT doctor with lots of videos, though most just introduce exercises without taking you through a "real time" routine. I'm working with this one now--10 Best Rotator Cuff Exercises for Strengthening--watching the demo, then pausing while I practice it, using the count up function on my timer to add up the time I'm spending on the actual exercises. I'm halfway through the 10, and taking a break from them for now.

Warning, if you try the Yoqi Qigong for Beginners 30 min routine, I left this comment:

"I'm glad I was introduced through shorter videos first--the Daily Routine, Mood Lifter, & Purge & Tonify. I loved them all, and was eager to try this one. I was fine until near the end: the Zhan Zhuang standing meditation with arms raised and held still for 3 minutes created a lot of new tension and discomfort that hadn't been there. By the time we were told we could rest the arms down and then bring them back up, all that wonderful relaxation had already been lost. Should I just stick with shorter routines?"

So if you try it, know you can lower the arms to rest them and raise them again (or not; I may need to build up slowly if I decide to try this again, and not just stick with the others).

Tried another Zumba class by Cindy (Silver Sneakers) but despite better sound, cues weren't clear, and the short weighted section focused on the class (who seemed mostly lost) instead of her, so proper form was never emphasized. I don't think I'll be trying her again.

But OMG! Tried another qigong routine by Yoqi Yoga & Qigong (see last post for my intro to the practice) called Qigong Mood Lifter, and ADORED it! These are easy to follow, and make me feel better. I want to start doing them regularly!

I was totally blown away to get a response from the instructor, Cindy, to the YouTube comment I left just last night! She thanked me for letting me know about the sound issues, and cheered me on for being active at this time especially. Wow!

I decided I could have it on, and do it in pieces between calls. I finished the first section using a tennis ball or stress ball under your feet, and my feet feel tingly and energized up into my legs--it's wonderful! So I recommend finding a ball that will work and having a chair handy to sit, or hold for balance, especially when rolling the ball under one foot--and those suckers like to squirt!

I finished it--in a few pieces, which was absolutely fine, and I loved it all. When I hunted up my small firm squeezy ball and a somewhat larger & softer one (the former I used for foot rolling and the second for calf rolling), I also found a small box with resistance bands and an old but strong bathrobe belt which I used for another foot stretch section of this workout. You work on lots of parts of the body, especially feet, legs, trunk, some hips and neck, and he stresses stability, mobility, and flexibility, breathing and engaging your brain to work with you.

He suggests you do these sets a couple of times a week, and again, you can break them up if you don't want to do a full half hour at one time. I highly recommend this flexibility workout!

In my decluttering, I came across a small bag of tumbled crystals I bought for the pretty colors--and maybe their meanings, but I had nothing to identify them. A gorgeous dark pink crystal (not a milky, light pink rose quartz) especially appealed, so I've been hunting online for what it might be. I think it's rhodochrosite, given the deep (clear) raspberry color. In looking for information for this crystal, I stumbled on a site I'm not familiar with with oodles of info--scientific, historical and spiritual. Self-care tips for telecommuters during the coronavirus response

Maintain boundaries between work and home life
As work and home environments merge, boundaries between work and life can become blurred. Unplugging is an important strategy for reducing burnout. To unplug as a remote worker:
• Set up a physical office space that you can sit in when the workday begins and leave when the workday ends. Close your laptop at the end of the workday and leave it in your workspace.
• Remember to take scheduled breaks, including meals, away from your home office space.
• If you still struggle with turning off work at the end of the day, try walking into your home’s front door when the day begins and out when it ends, or dressing in work clothes during work hours.
Focus on your physical health
A sudden switch to a telecommuting schedule can throw off your food and exercise routine. Additionally, many people are now staying inside to reduce their risk of exposure to the coronavirus. To support your physical health:
• Try an at-home yoga or exercise video. Many can be found free-of-charge on websites such as http://www.youtube.com.
• If you are able, make some of your meetings walking meetings so you can get outside in your neighborhood while you are on conference calls.
• Remember posture and ergonomics. Couches may feel comfortable at first, but will take their toll after several hours.
• Plan mealtimes, have healthy food available, and hydrate often. This will keep you from mindlessly snacking.
• Practice good sleep hygiene. Set a regular sleep schedule, 7-9 hours per night.
Take time to socialize
When you work remotely, you miss out on the social interaction that happens in the office. Now is the time to intentionally create a plan for continued socializing. To stay connected:
• Spend time at home with family. Try a new game, build a puzzle, share a meal, or watch a movie.
• Talk on the phone or video chat with friends and loved ones.
• Transition work meetings from phone to video chat.
• If you have a pet, take time to play with and care for them.
Nurture your mental health
A virus outbreak can increase everyone’s stress levels. It is important that you are mindful of supporting your mental health during this time. To reduce stress:
• Take a break from the news cycle. Consider journaling, reading, or watching something funny instead.
• Maximize your focus. Regular telecommuters often cite focus as a major source of stress when they are first getting started. Pay attention to when your focus is strong during the day and plan your work accordingly.
• Practice a short meditation, listen to soothing music, or learn Desk Yoga stretches you can do almost anywhere.
• Try therapy via telehealth. Many therapists offer therapy sessions over-the-phone if you are unable to attend in-person. If you already have a regular therapist, ask if this option is available. If you don’t have a therapist yet and would like one, check with your insurance provider.

Well, I Googled "modifications for exercises" and from the offered list picked "with bad wrists." (I saw bad knees, bad back, and other body parts I didn't note specifically.) There were several promising links that popped up. I tried the Silver Sneakers one, and it was a gold mine!

I was checking eligibility for Silver Sneakers, since it looked like a promising site, but the last step asked for my email and phone number, and when I checked the privacy policy link, I couldn't tell what kind of "promotion and advertising" lists I might get on, so I didn't complete it. I mostly liked it, but ran into a problem I have with ST routines, too. When I took kung fu, I learned to do table top position on my fists, but I'm not sure that's right for this. I've asked in comments, sent an email on Amy's website, but not gotten a reply. It's frustrating! This is the comment I wrote on YouTube for this video:

I loved parts of this, like encouraging self-expression and feeling the moves and pose instead of focusing on how we look. But I lost it in the middle--ended up in tears--because I CANNOT put full body weight on my wrists with flat palms. I tried on my fists as I modify with other exercise routines, but it was awkward, and I had to stop and resume at mountain pose. How do I modify my practice--or do I just have to sit out moves that cause intense pain?

Tried a brand new Amy workout (from 5 days ago), not as good as others. Added this comment:
"I definitely sweat on this. I liked the upright section, but as usual, I was left trying to figure out my own modifications on the floor, since my wrists can't support my full body weight. I also don't move as fast as you from one position on the floor to the next. As a result, the workout didn't end as well as it began for me."

As always, it's balanced, she gives options, and I had my trio of weights--3, 3.75, 5--using different ones depending on the moves.

This wasn't as intense or sweaty for me, but then I was learning new moves. I'll definitely be doing it again, and slowly moving to heavier weights.

No equipment, just bodyweight, both strength and cardio. I modified the floorwork on my fists for the leg raises and elbows for the plank step out (no jacks for me!). I appreciate that she always provides modifications to take it up or down, depending on level, and she demonstrates them all. Be warned, you may need a towel to mop the face sweat, like me!

It does go standing, floor, standing, floor. I worked up a sweat & only had trouble with the final plank move, trying to twist to side plank. Haven't figured how to modify that so it works for me & still challenges, but I liked the workout--highlighted it as a favorite on my Amy videos list.

My first time I just used 3# weights, and for the plank on my elbows, went to to 2# for the row move! I could often do the intermediate options (until we hit the floor), and in a single case did the advanced version with a balance move added. She reminds you several times you can scale back from the combo moves or use a single weight or no weight, or go slower. I'm sure I'll do this one again.

I added a lengthy comment about the many modifications she offers, what I tried that worked for me--like the first time I could do a "triceps dip" without pain--just a small motion on the floor, not sinking your entire weight onto your elbows and wrists by dipping below a chair! I tried January Jump Start Workout #2: Total Body Strength Workout with Dumbbells, also 16 minutes. I used 3#, 3.75# & 5# weights depending on the exercise. I also had to change on-the-floor push ups to against the end table (or counter) & keep elbows tight against my body to manage without elbow or wrist strain. It was a workout!

Comment: Wow--intense! I had to go to a lighter weight due to shoulder twinges with overhead moves. I couldn't quite keep up with your pace, and I'm glad you warned exercisers about the warning signs of overdoing it. The first jump start video of yours I ever did made me nauseous, so I've learned caution with pacing. Thanks for the positive commentary, too.

My comment on this one: Wow, great workout! I had to modify a bunch & replace dips w/ overhead triceps extensions (shoulder, wrist and elbow issues!), but I still liked the pace--challenging but not punishing.

We used to have pampas grass at the house in Oakland where Mary and I grew up. We never did *anything* to it! [Sorry, just saw your post now!]

My previous love-hate relationship with Jessica Smith and her workout videos has become mostly appreciative, though some individual routines I will never do again, mainly because of joint issues (or anything with "jump start" in the title--way too fast & intense).

Just tried one I *really* liked "Cardio Barre - 13 Minute Intermediate Total Body Ballet Workout." The 'intermediate' is because she doesn't explain the ballet terms like she does in her Barre for Beginners, but it's quite doable. Her was my comment: "Great workout & no joint issues! Folks here plant pampas grass & it is beautiful n the wind & the plumes add visual interest. We used to have some in the back corner of our yard , but it does need to be divided & replanted every year or it will takeover the entire landscape. The short video on how dividing is done makes it look so easy, but believe me, it isn't! LOL

Tried the week 2 workout in that series, an even worse experience, so shared this comment: "Tried to do the bodyweight strength circuit here; with joint issues I couldn't go fast on squats and lunges, and the inch worm hurt my wrists, so 2nd time through did it on fists, but still strained elbows. Tried pushups on a table, since no free wall space at right height due to furniture, but again wrists and elbows started hurting again--badly, so while I could do the next 2 moves, I was frustrated to the point of tears, so just gave up at that point. Again on the "Stay with me" comment: she had just reminded us to go at our own speed to be safe (actually she talked about good form, but safety might be a better warning), then soon after gives us the conflicting message to keep up with her--which is what "stay with me" means to me. May try other workout links from this & other weeks, but won't attempt this routine again."

I was able to comment as a guest, so had this to say, after trying 2 different workouts: I really enjoyed the week 1 walking HIIT, though it seemed a bit easy, so I tried the week 3 kickboxing one--way more intense. The knee strikes had me feeling nauseous, so I had to slow them down. I would recommend changing "Stay with me" to "Stay with it" since not all exercisers can match your pace, but can keep moving at their level.

It actually lasted 11 minutes--you need to add your own cool down afterwards, because your heart rate will be up there! It's HIIT with 40 seconds moderate activity alternating with 20 seconds of high intensity, with each cycle repeating, so you can find modifications that work for you.

I already make my bed every day and sometimes do the dishes and sometimes sort the mail. The one that's the hardest for me is getting undressed by the closet. We recently packed up a lot of our clutter into bins before a home appraisal. So I packed away all the 'stuff' at the end of my bed. Guess what...my bed is several feet shortter than it looked!! emoticon emoticon That was several weeks ago and the VERY hardest time I'm having is putting my clothes away when I take them off!!! Not my work clothes...I almost always hang them up when I get into my comfy clothes. But I've been just draping my relaxin' clothes at the end of my bed for so long...it's been my biggest challenge!!

I think I'll take this on as my next personal challenge.... emoticon for the article!!

I was just thinking about this concept the other day which is closely related to finishing tasks! Anybody here ADHD? It is easy to lose focus but I am getting better.
