Lainie and Barbara, It is good thing you are aware of a balance problem so you can go a little slower and be more careful.....It is a problem with furry friends, b/c you don't always see them.. One day I was on the phone and I turned to move away really fast and Reese was right behind my feet. I fell and fell hard. I think I sprained my fingers b/c now my rings don't fit those two fingers that were bent backwards.

Nell, I am sorry your hubby is starting to need assistance doing steps and it is a good thing you were there.....does he have a cane? Some people don't want to use a cane, so they use a walking stick and it works just as well. A taller one is better b/c you hold up higher and it gives more balance if you start to weave... You might suggest that to him....

Yesterday we went to visit hubby's son. There are some steps going up to the front door, and no rail. I had to let him hold my arm. I wasn't supporting him, just giving him a point on which to secure balance. It's the first time I'd seen him try to climb stairs without holding on, and it took me by surprise. I guess that's why people use canes: they won't hold you up like a walker, but that third point of contact helps locate your center of gravity. Once it's gone, I don't think you can get it back, just slow the degradation.

My balance is terrible, I have to do steps one at a time. And if there is nothing to hold on to I need help. If nobody to help I won't attempt them.

This is something that I need to focus on. I've had a few balance issues from time to time, especially around my little dogs.

Fortunately, this is one area I don't need to worry about yet. Even my 81 year old daddy has great balance, so if his ever goes, I'll factor that in and prep!!!

I'm going to check this out. I have been through so much therapy because of balance issues from the MS and they definitely don't get better as time goes on.

We have a fall risk assessment in home care and hospice.

This week, I'm going back to some of my balance exercises. When I had a torn meniscus, they had me work on that so I just need to get the sheet back out.

Good article. Balance is a problem for a lot of the senior generation. They have classes at the gym to help you learn to balance better.....Every time we go to the doctor, they ask have we fallen within the last 6 months. They put your answer on your chart and if you happen to go to the hospital they are aware that you have fallen and they may put a "high risk" yellow band on your arm.

As we age, our balance isn't as steady as it once was. It's why we hear so much about folks falling and breaking hips in our older population and not with younger folks. So, let's talk about and work on our balance this week. Here's a great little article about balance and easy to do exercises:

Whatever you do, be safe about it! Don't try to do more than you are capable of before you work up to it. Remember, you only compete with yourself!

So, what can you do this week to help improve your balance?
