Two weeks ago received a diagnosis of hypokalemia (low potassium) and prescribed Micro-K potassium supplement giving 750mg to be taken daily. I sure have been feeling the effects of low levels so along with the supplement I am working towards increasing potassium through food choices as well.

Do not forget that vitamin K is not Potassium. Vitamin K1 is Potassium, they are different, you can go online & get both lists. Some Dr's do not take notice of this. I am on vitamin K restrictions because of blood thinners, no Potassium restrictions, my Dr. is aware of the difference. Spark people lists both under the same heading, I know use another accurate site for tracking both, as well as tracking the correct amount of daily Omega to get the protein to work.It says what food you need to add to make it complete protein.

I have pleurisy, 2 types of anemia, macrocytic anemia, Iron deficiency anemia, from blood transfusions with wrong antibodies, causes blood to replace daily instead of 100 days, chronic pneumonia, pleurisy, chronic kidney disease, a partially collapsed lung, low blood pressure & blood clots in both lungs for 3 years. Now formed scar tissue.I am 56 years old. I had cervical cancer 6 years ago, no signs last 4 years as well. I have new blood clots now,2019.I am on P.S.T. time zone.

it seems that on quite a few days each week I am not getting the recommended amount of potassium. But I eat lots of raw spinach, raw mushrooms, romaine, carrots, sweet peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, winter squash, bananas, radishes and other fruits and vegetables. But some days I just don't meet the minimums. I am trying and will keep trying to increase the amount of potassium in my diet.

I eat 3,000 mg of Potassium daily,but have to lower it slightly because that puts it at the highest amount on Potassium blood tests. So 3,000 it looks like for most people will put you in a good range,you do not need over 4,000 mg of Potassium. I have had to add more sodium and drink a bottle of Gatorade daily before exercise which has Sodium and Potassium and the correct amount of sugar needed to exercise at my gym class for 60 minutes. I drink water during & after class. If you use Spark People to track your food you can add the amount of Potassium you want to your vitamin & mineral tracking, and let it add it for you and track your food ahead of time, so, you know you get the correct amount, blood tests can be done after you raise your amount to show if it is correct for you.

I need to increase mine because of my kidney disease,it is stage 2. Most people do not know but there are 30 kinds of kidney disease and yours can work 90% and still have problems,mine is 70%. I read a while a go that a person with kidney disease will use more potassium,salt & sugar during exercise then people who have no kidney disease and this will cause blood pressure to drop too much. Mine today after exercise was 86/55,way too low,also the bottom number on blood pressure is not suppose to drop,only the top number. Mine always drop,top and bottom. It said for kidney disease to drink a bottle of gatorade when you exercise at the gym and see if it is O.K. before and after. I am O.K. with walking & drinking water,but any strain becomes a problem. I get my blood pressure checked at my gym before and after we exercise, so I will try this 3 times and see,it worked before! I will pay more attention to increasing my Potassium foods also.

I gave up trying to get my potassium from food alone. I have added a potassium supplement to help achieve this goal emoticon
