Hi I am new with this challenge team. I actually ran into a "day" on another program here that suggested that I not have added sugar today, and it sent me here for support. So week one is a combination of good ideas and maybe not so good.
Good
The reasons I want to limit and/or stop added sugar
Being aware of when I want it. (Like Now after I just had a great lunch, it is my *thing* to also have something like a cookie after. I can Do that within my calorie range for the day, but the list of reasons why I shouldn't is compelling.
So I can keep track of when it want it for sure.
BUT even though it is week one I don't plan on continuing to eat it like I was eating it. I will of course keep track of WHY if I do eat some for the rest of this week and yeah.

Life is good

I completely agree! It has sure helped me in my journey! I still have off days but very rarely do I go over the counts. Probably twice in over 2 years. Never giving up!

Week 1 of this challenge - and the discussion we're having here - part of it is to just be aware of how much sugar you're consuming.
Having sugar included with all your other food tracking helps show you exactly that.
Seems kind of necessary.

Most foods have sugar in it when you read the labels, even fresh fruits. I use the sugar tracker to make sure my sugar intake doesn't get out of hand, especially if I eat sweets. I am trying to stay off sweets!

Good luck with this. I'm not sure why you would need a sugar tracker if you aren't eating sugar, but then you have probably figured out the role this plays for you.

Starting this challenge again - today!
Last time I just could not stick with it - sugar won!
Starting now - NO SUGAR!
(easy to say - isn't it?)
I do have my nutrition tracker set up to also track sugar.
I feel more determined this time around!

Well, it's true, according to several people I know, that it is harder to quit smoking than it is to quit drinking and harder to stay off sugar than off cigarettes, so your life has not gotten any easier!!

Journaling did seem to help. I start out good but don't seem to stick with it. I have an addictive personality, I never had just one of anything. So far I gave up drinking and cigarettes. Still working on controlling my cravings for sweets. Most days are good but I still bing once in a great while and it doesn't last long! Never giving up!

Good for you!!! I have a test which I use most of the time. There are three of us living in our house and one eats many sweets, which I sometimes sample. And then there are the samples at Costco. Anyhow, I I sample a sweet and within 10 minutes or less want a second, I know to never eat that one again. I don't know if its the type or the combination or the amount of sweeteners used, but I do know that they are too strong for me to have just one.

Journaling has been helpful.
I had this sense that all I ate was sweets/hidden sugar, and I’m right, but not as bad as I thought. I tend to cluster sweets. Not a binge, but one sets me up to pair or crave another.

I’m more interested in kicking off HFCS. That’s the sweetener that causes cravings for me. And now that’s it’s “natural sweetener” on labeling, I’m looking to drop all sweeteners down. Sugar, monkfruit, stevia, etc.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.

You have a good husband--be sure to give him a gold star. I have asked her and even bought a breadbox that sits on the counter for cookies, but it quickly fills and the remainders are on the counter.

Just ask her. I asked my husband to hide his sweets when I started and he did! It doesn't hurt to try! Just say you are trying to eat healthier and the cookies are a trigger food. Could she please help you out by hiding them or putting them somewhere you won't see them?

Good luck!

Probably the reason that I stopped buying cookies is that I do a lot of shopping at Costco and their packages of cookies are VERY LARGE. Now if I could just get Sue to keep the cookies that she buys someplace other than the kitchen counter where they are in sight 24/7,....

I can't remember the last time I bought a whole package of cookies! I go to Snohomish Pie Company and buy 2 big cookies when I absolutely want one! Safeway also has a pack of 2 cookies! I eat both no matter what. I now need to stop thinking about cookies!

We can do it! Never giving up trying!

And that inability to stop with "just one" is a sign--this is an uncontrollable food for me--and it is best never to buy it again. I've noticed that there are some kinds of cookies or crackers that are somewhat sweet and enjoyable and do not lead to that drive to eat "just one more". That is the kind to buy next time. This seems to be most apparent in "healthy" snack foods like granola bar type foods--some are satisfying with just one serving and others leave you with a craving for more that won't quit. Try it.

Back on week one! I am never giving up trying to cut down on sweets. I want to keep it under control so I don't end up with diabetes like my sister did. I am good at watching "added sugars" in foods but sweets are my downfall. Once I start I end up going overboard. I can't seem to have "just one"!

Hi fellow sugar lovers!

I'm in Week 1 of the challenge, and I haven't tracked my cravings and indulgences. However, I know that I crave sugar anytime I am hungry, tired, or crabby. I am so used to having a little indulgence at night.

I have tried to not give into every indulgence - strengthening my "resistance muscle" - and try to choose something healthier if I just can't take it anymore! Peaches and mangos are favorites :)
emoticon

Why I want to cut back on sugar:

1. My tummy hurts. Literally my intestines get inflamed when I indulge in too much sugar too often. I've been having problems this week. Natural sources seem to be fine (my fruits, a bit of raw honey in my tea).

2. My thinking is slow...slower...slowest... How old am I? I haven't even hit 50 and my vocabulary is hard to recall. It's just so sad.

3. My waistline is expanding. Going low fat didn't really help. Going whole foods and no added sugar is.

4. My body aches and my limbs are restless. When you indulge in sugary treats, you lose valuable vitamin and mineral resources your muscles and other structures need to function and then start anti-functioning. I made up that word. I think it fits.

That's the short list. Thanks for listening!

"The secret of living a life of excellence is merely a matter of thinking thoughts of excellence. Really, it's a matter of programming our minds with the kind of information that will set us free." Charles R. Swindoll

"It is only through labor and painful effort, by grim energy and resolute courage, that we move on to better things." Theodore Roosevelt

i am right there with you. Graduation parties and Memorial Day Parties have been very tough. I think being on this challenge kept me from totaling breaking down. I mostly ate fruit, one tiny one inch square lemon bite, and two one by two inch chocolate chip cookie bar. Having to track it all seems to help.

LADY561BUG, read labels and start watching how much sugar is in each serving. I just tried to cut our things that had a lot of sugar. Changed to unsweetened items, trying to cut back on sweets. Some people cut our all sugar but I didn't go there.

I don't add real sugar to anything! I also added sugar to my food tracking.

I try to give up anything that has "added sugar" which is a lot of stuff. Note the word try in that sentence. Many times you really don't know what is in food---especially if you didn't buy it yourself.

Question- When you say you gave up sugar- what do you count as give up ? There are so many food items that have sugar in them - do you give them all up? OR is it the obvious -cakes, pies, dounuts, candy, ice cream that line of things? I guess I need to know if you are limiting the nets carbs and if so how many is considered to be a good amount.

good luck to you. I, too, have noticed an increase in salt when I first cut out sweets, but than I start remembering to add more pepper or herbs, which so far no one has ruined by claiming that they aren't good for us. Here's to thyme--the best herb if you can have only one!!!

I know we're not required to cut out sugar on week 1, but considering I put myself on phase 1 of the South Beach Diet right before finding this challenge, it's bye-bye to sugar anyways. So far it hasn't been too difficult, though I think I might be compensating with too much salt...need to work on that. Feeling really grateful for this challenge.

I finished week one with mixed results. I had no sugar for 5 days--then had lots of it for 2 days. What derailed me? very high stress in household, timing for meds off, items sitting in front of me and open, too long between meals due to very unusual situations. I did write 4 blogs, started back exercising in the mornings, got more than average amount of sleep, maintained 5 or more fruit/veggie servings, went over calorie range only once, and avoided many sweets that I normally would have eaten. Next week I'll do better.

I joined this challenge on the 3rd of October, but was waiting to receive instructions via email, which did not happen. I finally tried clicking on the week one place, which I had thought you were to click when you finished week one, and it worked. Don't know why I was so mixed up, but it happened.

anyhow, I have eaten almost no sugar since the third. I took the quiz and was rated out of control, but in part that was because more than one answer was correct for me. I am actually out of control in some situations, so the rating is OK with me. I do know, though, that I can do pretty well about having no sugar--none is much easier and more possible than some.

I do allow myself to eat a protein bar, as these do no make me want more sugar and they really help me balance the rest of my diet if my meal has to be delayed.

Good Evening! I started this challenge today to work more on my sugar addiction. I quit eating all sugar the end of August and went a full 5 weeks with nothing. But it has not curbed the desire to have sweets at all. I guess some addictions take longer than others to overcome. So I'm here to see how others handle this and see if something might click in my brain to give sugar a rest.

Here's to a great month of learning!! emoticon

I've discovered that I'll eat when otherwise unoccupied, like during a 15 minute wait for my DH to get out to the car. Sort of a nervous/anxiety thing, I think. I put my "lessons" in my blog.

Didn't did TOO badly yesterday in the sweets department. One peppermint Life Saver, and a piece (one serving) of Sock It To Me cake from Walmart's bakery. My husband bought it, and I did count it.

I ate a lemon muffin and a glass of 1% milk for breakfast. Later I did a handful of almonds and a slice of Swiss cheese. I really need to boost my protein. The muffin was *there*.

I am again starting the challenge.
My sugar habit is whenever I see it or it is offered to me.
Ice cream is my weakness. I love it and usually overeat it when I have it.
If I see cake, cookies or anything like that I have to eat some if not a lot of it.
I in maintenance now but I need to give up the sugar to stay at this weight and get more energy.
I have been known to sugar crash. emoticon

I gained two pounds over the holidays. Not bad considering I have not been tracking my food. Now that I know that I probably was more careful than I realize, I feel like I need to really focus or that good luck will fade. I don't want to let that complacent attitude derail my goals. So....I love baked goods....I think I try to substitute fresh fruit this week.

I was under control with sugar but with holiday treat indulgences I gained 7 pounds. I'm back on track but it will take a little while to get back to where I was, I can do it with all of this positive New Year energy!

This is week one , day three! Once I start eating chocolate or sweets it gets out of control! I thought I had control but here I am. I started journaling again, hope that helps! Right now I need to give up all sweets. I know the drill!

Starting this Challenge today. I thought I kicked the addiction earlier this year, but have fallen into some bad habits again. Hoping the support will keep me on track!

Day 1/Week 1 : I did the assessment and reading labels. Now. I plan to keep a spark food log.
Carbs are sugar as well. Do I avoid all carbs, even gluten free?

Day 2 of the challenge ... started watching my eating habits. Will be picking up a small notebook today while I'm in town so I can begin writing down what I put in my mouth so I can get a true assessment of what I eat.

Hello everyone. Today is Day 1 for me on this challenge. I'm taking this challenge for several reasons ... to help me better focus on my eating habits, to lose weight, to better control the types of foods I eat, and to learn to move forward to a healthier lifestyle.

Although I am in good control of my sugar cravings, I still need some help to stay away from some things... I don't find it hard to stay away as much as I used to.

Just joined this challenge, I do not typically suffer from sugar cravings, but when I do I lose control and binge like a mad woman! So I need to get that under control.

I just joined the challenge today and I am hoping that doing this in addition to another "plan" I have started will help me to get my food in check.

My general game plan for this week is to track what I eat and highlight what is "whole food' and what is "processed food". From there I will be able to see from a glance what I need to improve on and from there cut out more "processed" food the next week or even the next day for the foods I typically eat. Sugar will probably be the hardest because it has become a habit to eat some sort of treat at night after dinner. Also my sporadic pop habit needs to go away for good. I can do good all week but when Friday hits I want some sort of pop and then it all falls apart from there until Monday when I start over again. Really hoping to break those cycles one and for all.

Hi ,
I joined the challenge four days ago. So far doing ok but these are the early days. Soon I will be attacked by the compelling urge to hunt down anything sweet.

Plan!

Not going to bother with observing my habits. I know I love sugar and sugar/carb/fat combos so no point in it.

I have bought Sarah Wilson's I Quit Sugar book. Not sure if i can quit for good but I will read the theory tostart with. How are you going with the sweet tooth?

Also for today and the last 3 days the focus on my food has been to notice the carbohydrates in my food (Nutrition Plan info) and keep it down below the diabetic low level so below 150 grams. Aiming for 100 to 130.

I'm not sure what triggers my sweet tooth yet if I even have a trigger. My two biggest challenges are:
1) someone (coworkers, neighbors, etc.) brings something sweet to me, I will indulge no matter what.
2) thinking about sweets constantly. I tell myself I don't need them, THEN I tell myself it's okay to have a few, THEN overeating, THEN regretting everything I just did.

I do want to stop eating so much sugar for all the reasons mentioned in the Week 1 goals: "lose weight, prevent diabetes, manage your blood sugar levels, or just make more room for healthier foods

Truthfully, I crave salty snacks more than sugar, though both are a problem. My husband keeps buying sweets. He cannot shop without bringing home some sort of pastry or candy. It's always in the house and it's a temptation I do not need. Pointers on how to put blinders on around this stuff will be appreciated! emoticon

I have constant cravings that get in the way of me concentrating on anything else. I keep eating sweets even when I'm looking at it and realizing I've eaten too much and that I'm not even enjoying it any more. Cold turkey is the only way I've ever been able to stop before and once I'm off the wagon it gets really bad again really quickly.

Took the quiz. I have situational struggles with sweets. I just don't buy and keep around the house. Hubby has a couple favorites but they aren't big temptations to me. My biggest struggle is with chocolate.

Hi, I am Debbie and crave sugar, especially chocolate candy. I am on day 7 of Whole30 and don't crave anymore. My only sweet is fruit, but no fruit juices and limiting high glycemic fruit.

I'm wrapping up Week 1 of the challenge. The is. not my first time at this rodeo. A recent move led to more candy which of course had led to more of every sweet thing. I particularly enjoy my baked goodies, mostly muffins. Not really big on cookies or ice cream or even really cake. No, I like bready kinds of sweets. Back in the day, my rule was to allow my treats on the weekend, but over the past couple of years that has not happened.

For this challenge, I've given up chocolate candy, which is a trigger for me. Plus, I'm aiming to avoid the other stuff during the week, unless I bake, which I have control over. It also means I really want it if I have to bake it. At least that's the overall goal.

I crave my sweets mostly during stress and I think sometimes I just think it's almost habit. So, I'm trying to incorporate mindfulness. We'll see.

But, this week has been good - no candy! I've walked by the candy jar and turned down the offer of a cookie (sadly there is a bakery next door to where I work).

Now, on to week 2.

Sugar Addict here!

So I'm what's called a situational sugar addict....or so the quiz says :P. Basically, most of the time I can avoid sugar but once it's put in front of me...forget it lol. But I also have a sweet tooth and I blame my mom for it!! :P Growing up she always needed something sweet after her meals and I kind of picked up on her habit but i'm proud to say that more often than not I ignore or try to ignore that craving or eat a fruit vs chocolate let's say. Alright well that's my situation hopefully i'll be able to kick the sugar this time around!!

Peacerilly Out..(always wanted to say that haha) emoticon

Hi, I have a sugar addiction too. I am in the 3rd month of my 6 month process of my journey to have WL surgery. I am having a hard time not eating sweets and losing weight prior to my Dec 6 month goal time period. I have spoken with my nutritionist, about making a Mommy Box, with things to do for myself, not my kids.. .LOL to keep me busy at night, instead of eating. She also suggested I switch chairs, so changing my situation will change my routine.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how they are avoiding sweets.
Thanks, Meghan

HI,

I have developed a serious need for sugar over the past several years. My worst trigger is soda but just about any sugary food is a problem. I have gained over thirty pounds in the past four years and I attribute most of it to sugar intake. Starting this challenge to break my dependence and get back in control.

Hi Team:
I am JoAnn and I evidently joined this team in August of last year and never followed through. I am ok if I don't see sweets but if they are put in front of me, I will give in and eat some. My goal is to have the will power to resist the urge to eat anything sweet. This should help me reach my goal of weight loss which I have been working on for a long time. emoticon

My main sugar source is a 24 ounce Mocha Freeze (a designer coffee, essentially), which I get once, sometimes two and three times a day. I wake up craving a Mocha Freeze. When I am stressed, sad, happy, anxious...almost any emotion you can think of, I want a Mocha Freeze (and I usually give in).

Since I'm disabled, I'm not surrounded by workplace sweet treats and my husband and I don't generally keep sweets in the house. But when the holidays roll around, I eat more than my fair share of sweets.

I have been told by doctors that sugar increases the inflammation in your body, which can lead to chronic pain, diabetes, heart disease, etc. Since my mom is diabetic and I seem to be inheriting all of her health issues, I want to cut out the Mocha Freezes altogether in order to stave off diabetes.

What you do today can improve all your tomorrows. (Ralph Marston)
