EARTHSEAME,

I need to start in walking too. As if I need more motivation for walking by gathering more about the benefits of walking daily: well here it is (good for you for getting started!) www.powerofpositivity.com/sc

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...

I did my first walk today. 28 minutes. I forgot to take a way that avoids an extra block of hill so my legs feel a little wobbly now. I started off a bit annoyed. I was listening to a walking meditation and my headphones kept slipping and hurting my ears. Then I warmed up and began to enjoy the sights and sounds and sensations. By the time I got home I considered going an extra block, but my legs need a day or two to get used to the extra exercise. I don't want to twist an ankle or aggravate existing plantar fasciitis. So I came home and logged in here. 2,000 steps! I am a little surprised--I didn't think that I walked that far. Feeling happy and satisfied and pleased with myself now. :)

I still have the craving for a glass of chilled white wine and might have a glass on Saturday, but for right now I am not going to give in. I have worked really hard just to make the scale go down and it wasn't easy! I worked out for 6 hours between the deck and pool..a lot of work for 1 pound! Time to get ready for the gym and then off to the pool! Have a great day!

Good for you! I've done the same... walk instead of give into the craving and then it passes.

Yesterday I was really struggling with wanting a glass of wine. All day long I was fine until my sister mentioned she was going out and was going to have wine. Wow, talk about triggering a craving! I got on my shoes, grabbed the dogs and out the door we went! I had to keep asking myself what was happening inside my mind? I wasn't hungry, I wasn't angry, Wasn't tired and I wasn't lonely. I wanted a glass of chilled white wine because I had a great day! I worked hard on cleaning the deck and exercised for 2 hours and I wanted a glass of wine with my fruit and cheese snack! I then realized I would have more than one glass and decided not to have any at all. I did come home and have water with a lemon and a can of diet soda. Took care of the cold and sweet taste I was looking for!

Yesterday I took my walk to a park I used to frequent when my eldest was first born. It is on the Ottawa river by the sailing club so the skyline is all white sails on blue with mountains in the distance. The park itself was full of extended families picnicing and playing with balloons and the ponds interlaced with paths and waterfalls and bridges spattered with lillies, ducks, geese and a lone radio control sailboat. I chatted with the would be sailors for a bit, smiled at older couples and dog walkers, cornered a groundhog for a selfie and sat beneath a waterfall doing journal writing and reading while a man with some mental issues talked to himself at the top of the waterfall. It occurred to me that we were not that different as I wrote to myself in my pages. Sanity is just a perception.

Today my walk was in the rain. The drops started at the turning point to do a loop and I had a moment wondering if I should have worn my waterproof tilly hat. But I was wrongly optomistic and opted instead of returning to extend my jaunt by going to go to the conservation park in town to look at the turtle nesting area. Just as I reached it the sky became a water canon launch and I apparently was the target. I stood there a little miffed that there was no shelter and no point. By the time I reached home I was one big drowned rat with hair and clothes plastered to my form and water squelching out of my shoes, my self transformed from sprinkler to lake maker on my hall floor tiles. Nice. At least my mantra of "what's next" lead me to a hot shower and into comfy clothes. Of course it is sunny out now. Ha!

Quotes from the book about walking... many worth writing about I think and certainly worth looking at now we are coming to the end of the week's look at this tool:

A habit of Daily Morning Pages brings us into contact with our thoughts and feelings.... from our Food Journal we learn what we ourselves are eating. Now.. we need to exercise as well as exorcise our demons.

We replace our worry with Walking 20 minutes a Day

"I walk out of the house with problems and I walk back with solutions"
"I learn to enjoy my own company"

p. 26 "Creativity is not something ethereal. It is something very real, an energy that best serves us when it is grounded. And we ground our creativity through our bodies, most easily and most sensibly through walking."

p. 27 "It is my habit to scoop up pocket fulls of acorns, fingering them like prayer beads as I walk"

p. 27 "As I walk I pray for guidance. I ask for help on my projects, an intuition as to what direction to move next. I ask to be made beautiful like the trees are beautiful, each growing according to a unique plan... I pray to grow gracefully, to go along with God's intentions instead of insisting on my own."

p. 27 "When we walk, our problems are drawn to scale... our problems fall into a different perspective. As our hearts connect to the Great Creator, our problems seems to diminish... We sense an influx of what might be called grace."

....from loss a sense of connection
... from emptiness, mysteriously replenished
... able to sit and write
... walking is a healing tool
....allows you to figure things out
.... conscious tool of inspiration and connection

We become recipients of ideas from a higher source, that may not have occurred to us that the author calls "Alpha Ideas" that become more plausible with each walk.

p. 30 Walking helps us receive. It tutors us in the art of breathing, central to successful meditation. Our breathing stabilizes and deepens, we become more centered. The "still small voice" becomes more audible."

p. 31 "A habit of walking yields spiritual and creative breakthroughs"

p. 32 "We walk alone and yet we find ourselves part of a larger world"

p. 33 Some people walk right after morning pages and some to work... or some after work. A daily walk is best. It is a "pallet cleansing break"

p. 33 "When I cannot walk outside, I walk uphill on a treadmill... and i may cue up my music or read from my favorite prayer book"

Next time you feel a snack attack, try a walk and record the results.

I love that insight about trust and how you "expressed it" by letting your dogs off leash.

During my walk this morning I began to think about trust. A simple exercise in trust today was letting my dogs off the leash to run. I started to relax and realize how tightly I use to hold on to relationships, material items and even food. I was never in need of anything and yet I couldn't let go! I would get mad if someone else got more than me and could not for the life of me figure this out? Sitting down after my walk with pen in my hand I wrote 3 pages about wanting my parents attention and not getting it. I am going to the pool to get some exercise and digest all I just unearthed!

My walk was in the pool. Too hot and muggy out and too much going on to leave guests unattended. But all is good. Today my thoughts were about conscious decision making, taking the time to think before deciding instead of being impulsive. Being careful. It was about character and how that impulsive me is not who I want to be. I want to slow down. In my meditation the theme was "the wider the view, the less isolated we are". I think that me me me thinking is the heart of many of my problems. When I take a wider view I see that I am a part of a big picture and sometimes I am just a part of someone else's journey. That what happened to me today is not always about me. And that was a good lesson. I had a big cancellation today. Guests who were to be here 2 weeks starting tomorrow. They want to shift by 2 weeks and part of me right away wanted to stomp my feet and not be part of their problem. But I can make some phone calls and just see. So often things work out the way we least expect it and if I can not focus on how this is affecting ME then perhaps I will glean part of the bigger picture. No decision to say "NO!" Instead, I'll see what i can do. Maybe nothing. Maybe I need to be ready for someone else. I don't know. In fact while writing this i got a call for someone wanting to go on a waiting list for a few days that would become vacan if... so yes, maybe it is all meant to be. Walk, be calm my writing buddies.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

I went for a walk after I ate breakfast today and started thinking about my mom. I wasn't sure what made me think of her until I was almost home. I drank my first glass of milk in years and recalled how she loved to drink cold milk with a hand full of cookies! Guess who takes after my mom....yup! Could eat a handful of cookies without a second thought! Glad those days are over, but how interesting remembering all the times I did this on a daily basis.

I think I put all my thoughts into the description of the tool... ooops! What about you? I know some of you are already using the walking tool and finding some lovely places to walk. Is it working? Or have you hit some obstacles?
