Ha! WHat an image. You said columns of cloud, but I'm imagining you "swimmer breathing" in a plaque of gnats.

Most of my commute is along the Columbia River. There's a section that's close to the river, and the adjacent homeowners' underground sprinkler systems leave water on the trail. That particular section is kind of like chip-seal, so the water collects.

There's a period in the spring and in the fall when it's not cold enough to keep the bugs at bay nor is it hot enough. If it's not windy, there will be columns of bugs. Seriously - at times it looks like the pillar of cloud that guided the Israelites through the desert. (Why can't it be manna instead? Why?)

Sometimes I can dodge the pillars; when I can't, I "swimmer breathe." I imagine you can't really do that on single-track, though.

I've been known to wear netting for buggy hikes - maybe I'll break that out for some of my cycling. I'm a mouth-breather during lawn mowing season because something in the cut grass here makes my sinuses clog up. Thank goodness for the neti pot when I get home.

I definitely need some glasses, in particular for the dust I ride my bike over a big bridge and past construction sites and I get dust in my face all the time!

LOL, skin tight pants with diaper padding and a sesame seed hat with holes in it that just sits on the tippy top of your head... ya I can see how you would think the glasses were just to complete "an already idiotic outfit" HAPPENINGFISH!

I definitely wear sunglasses to keep out dust and bugs! I should get a clear pair to wear at night.

Yeah! I used to think that cycling sunglasses were just to complete an already idiotic outfit. I had no idea they were a massively important bugshield!

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's hilarious. I'd never thought of that. Since I only bike in the city, I haven't had too many encounters of the buggy kind. Something to keep in mind if I ever find myself in the country.

I learned a long time ago to keep my big mouth shut, especially when riding downhill! Isn't it something that, no matter how old we are, we can recollect clearly some of our first lessons in life???

Ach! My rides are getting later and later while the sun sets earlier and earlier. I've noticed the bugs are fierce as the sun sets. I opened my mouth just to say a friendly hello to another biker passing by and got a mouth full of bugs! So from then on I only smiled and nodded as they passed me by.

The bugs are so bad that before I even got on the bike trail my shirt was covered with little things with wings! I hope as it cools down the bug population dies off.
