I use a Nikon D90. DH uses a Nikon D5100. It's convenient to only really need one of each lens for the two of us, and the controls are similar enough that there's no real learning curve, so we can either swap lenses or swap cameras mid-hike if we want.

Before I started College in Photography - I was using a Canon T3i for my photos. Then, in the course - I got a Nikon D3200.

Now, I'm in the market to get a Waterproof DSLR because I would like to take photos in the rain / snow (whatever the weather conditions are) and not worry about damaging my camera.

If anyone has any suggestions - I am interested in hearing what they are - as to what camera (DSLR) to purchase. :)

Thanks!

I wish I could find a lens like yours (up to 300 or the one to 400) that I could afford. I just have the lens that came with mine and the 80-200 that I had. I think that now, if you can find any Pentax, the mount is different. I didn't realize that I had a K mount until I was asked on here which Pentax I had. I remembered the D, but not the K until I looked at it. I would like to be able to get nice shots of birds, but can't get close enough.

I've shot Pentax since the early 70's so I was thrilled to see the K100D for sale on Craigs list, and close enough to be that I could see and play with it before I bought it. Have a 70-300 lens on it now, trying to shoot the super moon tonight. May go in and get another long lens, and try it too. I have a total of 6 lenses for it.

For quick and easy, and very good quality, I also shoot Kodak, but can't remember what one and i'm all comfy out on the swing on the porch listening to the night sounds and watching the moon, so I'm not going to go look!

My Pentax is a K100D. Rather old for a camera (or anything nowadays). Like my PZ, I got it about 2 weeks before the new model came out. It doesn't have the 2" view like the newer digital cameras do, just the small viewfinder like the film cameras have, so when I go to the books for usage information on digital cameras that part doesn't match up. All the books, though, are written with Canon and Nikon specifically used for examples.

I find my iPhone takes pretty decent closeup pictures and landscapes, too, most of the time. What I can't do is take good photos of wildlife, because I cannot zoom in closely or sharply enough. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is all digital zoom.

My Nikon Coolpix has a much better optical zoom capability, and I found the camera affordable to me (I would have loved a $500 camera, but had to settle for a $200 one when it was on sale for $150). In general, it seems the photos I take are clearer than the ones I take on my iPhone. A drawback of the Nikon is the zoom is very slow, so I could potentially spook wildlife while fiddling with the camera, if the animal is close enough to sense me.

For pure convenience, my iPhone wins, as it is smaller and I already have it with me everywhere I go (unless cellphones and/or cameras are banned). Also, there are tons of camera and photography-related apps available for my iPhone. A real minus, though, is the battery of my iPhone is exhausted in minutes when I take a lot of photos and post them to Facebook. I went to a parade, and my phone shut off about halfway through the parade.

One plus of the Nikon is that it has lots of "scene" settings, so it optimizes photos of sunsets, beaches, pets, etc. I don't have a lot of control over aperture and shutter speed (or if I do, I haven't found out how to use them).

So, definitely, both have their uses.

I love my Canon XSi but I also love my Nikon P510. The P510 can reach twice as far as the Canon when I am using a 70 - 300 mm lens on the Canon. True, the Canon gives me the highest quality shot, but changing lenses during a nature shoot and reaching long distances, the choice tends to be P510. When I want macro, I'm going to switch to my Canon. Both are lots of fun and each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Nice shots. I only have a pretty basic phone, but it does have a camera. I have a little problem with photos on it because it moves the subject toward the bottom of the photo. Still, it is nice to have when I don't have the larger camera.

It depends on what I am doing. When I run, I take one of my cheap point and shoots ... I call them tossers ... if I break it, I can toss to and feel little loss.

If I need a camera quick, my iPhone does a surprisingly good job. Who'd'a thought?

ANd if I want to take my time and get THE shot, I pull out my Nikon D5100

Case in point. These two images were made with my phone and Instragram. I love them both.

I also use a little Canon Power Shot A3100 IS and my iPhone! Whatever I have with me and the bigger camera is sometimes a pain to carry. Expensive optics are nice, but having a photograph that is in focus, framed well with correct exposure and show something interesting are what make the photograph. I have seen some lovely and inspiring images from phone cameras.

Until recently, iPhone 4S. Now I have a Nikon Coolpix L610. Of course, the iPhone is still very convenient.

Mine is a little cheaper brand that still has interchangeable lenses. I got a Pentax because I had lenses that would work with it from my film camera. I have used Pentax since 1973 when I got an SP (with the screw on lens back then). Of course, nowadays it is impossible to find the camera or lenses around here and the U.S. headquarters are probably 20 miles or a little less from me.
