Great Philly cheesesteak lunch today! Couldn't beleive it really tasted like ones from the 'shore (Delaware) - will definitely make again. Learning to be okay when I feel that I'm hungry. Pop some gum, drink some water. First time I've been able to stick to it when I'm hungry, which isn't often. Used to a morning snack and a smaller breakfast. Does it really matter if you break up the morning calories either way?

I reached my initial goal in December but I am working on losing more weight now so I can get closer to my goal of doing a pullup. I got to the top of normal BMI for my height, but I am hoping to improve my lean to fat ratio. I spent the last four months working on lean, and now I'm focusing on fat loss for a couple of months.

Let's talk about your mind-set as we enter week 2. It's easy to focus on the aesthetics of weight loss or the number on the scale. Today, let's talk about the reasons you're losing weight that don't involve the scale, bathing-suit season, or pants sizes. Do you want to lower your blood pressure? Be able to run a mile without stopping? Fit into an airplane seat? What is your motivation?

I just want to be healthy overall. I notice that when I have a nice healthy weight going on, my allergies and sinus issues subside. I am also able to sleep better, and wake up more refreshed, because it helps knock out my sleep apnea. It also makes it easier to move around and builds my endurance for tasks. This is important when you have a two-year-old who is always on the go.

Spark It Up or Make It Work? We included these options for days when you want to do more or need to do less. Which of these options are you choosing more often? Do you find it harder to fit in fitness or cooking? How can we help you stay on track and reach your goals?

I like to fit in the Spark It Up options when I can. I don't find it difficult at all to fit in the exercise or cooking, especially if I get a good head start in the morning. Morning exercises ensure I start my day off right, and I just feel better about myself the rest of the day knowing I have that under my belt.

I weighted myself this morning and I lost two pounds last week. I have been walking more and I feel great. Today I had a meeting at my son's school and I walked home from my dad's house. I mapped the route and I walked 1.32 miles and I feel great. My car is broken so my dad picked me up for the meeting at the school. I walked to his house after the meeting and home from there.

For me I want to be healthy again, to lose the middle weight, to hopefully reverse my PCOS and be able to have a child. I've been trying for 3 years without any success. I'm finally ready to be healthy, no excuses any more. That is my motivation.

I think I find cooking the hardest, not because I do not have the time, but because I don't want to spend the time cooking multiple meals. My husband has no desire to eat vegetables or pretty much anything healthy. His daughter (my step-daughter) is becoming just as picky as him, so I feel like I have to cook something totally separate for myself when I do cook.

I got in 20 minutes on the Elliptical and some upper body weight training yesterday.

After a nice long bike ride in the evening (good), we went out to dinner, and my choices turned out to be not so good. Just have to do better on day 9.

Who knew that the spinach queso with tortilla chips could pack so many calories!

Never got to post yesterday due to a power outage, but still didn't panic. Met all my goals...including to get an earlier workout.

My motivation other than dropping the pounds and better fitting clothes is just to be able to keep up with my kids. I have an 18 mo old that loves to run her momma everywhere. It would be nice to not have to drop from exhaustion every evening. And I am already starting to see the results for more energy.

Kids begged for more pancakes for breakfast, so I caved. Also made Meg's Fried Chicken because we had to eat out yesterday at birthday party. The chicken was awesome! Definitely becoming a dish that is used constantly.

Swopped breakfast this morning. I don't eat much meat and don't do muffins so I had muesli sprinkled on top of raspberries and natural yoghurt. The raspberries are the last box from last years crop which we froze.

Chugging along had to swap tonight's dinner for the thai peanut noodles since I forgot the evaporated milk. Got in a 10 minute walk after lunch. Storming out, so didn't go for one after dinner, but danced in front of the tv instead.

Today was busy and no real time for breakfast, so I punted and had a Zone bar and a banana. Rest of day was reasonable - stayed in the range, and did the cardio for 30 minutes. Had to do a lot of swapping here and there, but had some time to plan this evening and hope to be closer to having all the meals and snacks for most of the rest of the week. I lost some weight, maybe a couple of pounds, but it varies so much usually, I'm not sure if the loss is 'real.' We'll see toward the end of this week.

Sounds like everyone is doing their best and some are losing and others are not seeing scale changes. But, in a very real sense, everyone is winning. Keep going!

I had yogurt for breakfast because I'm not a sweet tooth fan. I did make the Trim Taco Salad for lunch and the Alfredo for dinner (I used asparagus). Both recipes were amazing!

I took the dog for a 10 minute walk - twice today, and I ran 25 minutes on the treadmill (no walking intervals). Also being consistent with my May goals, I did 50 crunches on the ball before work.

Reasons I'm doing this? It feels so good, why not? I want to live longer, I don't want to jiggle. Have a Positive attitude and the list goes on............

Staying in my calorie range has been easier for me then getting a workout in lately. Cleaned up my house (put laundry away and picked things up) this morning before work. After work, made supper and then packed soldier boxes. Still trying!

Being consistant will get it done!

Happy Day 8 everyone!

My non numerical motivation is to deter health issues in the future. Diabetes and high blood pressure run in my family so I would rather work hard now rather than be on pills later. Also, I hope to have kids within the next few years and want to be healthy and active for that.

I already lost 3 pounds and it feels great, it has been hard fighting the cravings and getting out of bed to work out, but when I feel and see the difference it is worth it.

Today was a good day with the meals and exercising. I look forward to this week.

I, too, want to lower my cholesterol and blood pressure. They're not bad but they could be better. I am with several of you concerning walking into stores and not needing to go to the Plus sizes. I'm getting close so maybe this will get me there.

I am 68 and just welcomed my first grandchild into this world. At this age I will be pretty old when he reaches certain milestones in his life. But I plan to be around for as many as possible and at least be as fit and healthy as I can be to enjoy what I can. He's a cutie and I want to be around to see what a great person he will be.

Everybody keep on tracking. Don't give up! emoticon

I lost 1/2 lb. this last week. But, the book does say that for those of us short and over 50 this may be what to expect. And, that seems to be my good weeks. I do have the Sparkpeople Cookbook, and this will inspire me to pull it back out and use it again. Thanks Sparks Coaches!

I'm 66 and I'm amazingly healthy for someone who has been overweight for more than a few years. The reason for my quest is that if I'm to live to be an OLD lady, I want to be a healthy old lady and taking off 40 to 50 pounds would be about prefect! Right now I totally enjoy spending time with my grandchildren and great grandchildren, I'd like to continue to do that for a long time!

My motivation is simply to feel better and help my son make "better" choices more naturally. I grew up on the food that made me fat, so I want him to see that we can have great meals without going overboard or eating junk. I am still feeling great and energetic even though the scale isn't moving much, so that is enough to make me happy.

I want to keep from going on cholesterol medicine, it's borderline high, I want to lose the muffin top, and just be healthier as I live the 2nd 50 years of my life. I've really like the recipes, until tonight - I followed the recipe exactly, and I cook a lot, but the result seemed leaden, and not much taste. Fed two guys who ate it, but I kept apologizing for it. On the flip side, the taco salad was really good. I lost 3 lbs this first week, and my clothes are fitting better, so I am definitely motivated. Going on beach vacation Saturday, so will let myself enjoy but will keep it in check for sure, too much hard work to completely blow it.

I have 3 grandkids and I want to be able to have fun with them for a very long time. I want to be able to walk up a hill without needing to stop and catch my breath every few feet. I, too, need to work on lowering my carb intake as well as increasing my protein. My main challenge is getting into an exercise routine, I am good at coming up with excuses to not do much. My SS videos came today, they should help. It's a lot easier to watch on a TV screen than try to follow along in a book. On to week 2!

I did not gain or lose weight this week but was away from home several days so that's ok. I am hoping this week goes better. My ultimate goal is a BMI in the normal range, even at the top of the normal range. I know I will feel amazingly successful when that happens.

There are many reasons why I won't to lose weight, the most important probably being to be healthy and active in my retirement which is fast approaching. I want to be able to enjoy outings with my children and grandchildren and not hold them back. I want to be able to fit into a seat in the plane without having to have an extension. I want to be able to walk into a shop and buy nice clothes which fit and look good, instead of going to outsize. I lost one lb in my first week. A bit disappointing, but then these pounds took a long time going on and will be a long time getting off and at least it is down and not up!

I too can relay to you by not loosing any weight in your first week, but PLEASE don't give up for your own health, you are the only one that have the power to do it, even if takes a while. I have been struggling to loose weight as I say in my previous comments for about 6 month, but until I changed my mind about this is not for my weight is for my health and I'm looking at it as a life style change and not a diet I did not get good results. Good Luck!
Tavnkate:
I'm sorry about your dad, you seem young and with young children that can change their life if you give them the good example, the only thing I regret the most is not have learned all this when I was younger, I'm being a roll model now to my grandchildren and they venture to eat my meals and to their surprise they enjoy them. I do not allow my family to say the word DIET and they have gotten the message.
Good luck!

I enjoyed meals for Day 8. I'm following the recipes in the book to see how they turn out before I change any of the ingredients. So far I am pleased with all the recipes I've prepared. What a variety of foods eaten today and the past week. I'm getting used to eating snacks too! I don't eat a lot of sweets, but my nieces and nephews will enjoy them when they visit.

I know that cooking at home and eating a variety of fruits, veggies and dairy in recipes will definitely be a requirement (after this challenge) for continued weight loss and healthy eating.

I am learning the art of cooking nutritious meals and appreciating them! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I would love to lose weight to be able to shop at whatever store I want to. To be able to tuck my shirt in to my pants and skirts and show off a cute belt. To not feel self-conscious when I sit down worrying about my rolls showing. To feel comfortable having my picture taken at any time, not having to get into my most flattering "pose."

Oh, man, I could go on and on! Mostly for vanity reasons than for health reasons (although that's definitely a "side benefit" for me).

I have been getting used to and enjoying cooking more over the past few months, but now I'm really trying to step up my workouts from leisurely walking the dog every evening. This week, my goal is to get up early and do a 30-minute Coach Nicole DVD. I figure if I can do it ONCE this week, maybe I can do it TWICE next week, and so on...

Stay positive.
Do not give up.

1st week was great with a 2 lb loss! The previous week I had lost 1lb. I'm onto this week with a not so great start, I enjoy the menu it is absolutely delicious, I enjoy the exercise it gets me pumped and energized. And my thoughts at the moment shall pass, but always helps to have friends rooting for you to get out the mood faster.

Sparkon friends, and do your best!

MrsKate, I'm very sorry to hear you gained this week, but I am glad you are sticking with it!

I was excited, because this morning's weigh in marked an official 50 pounds lost for me! (2.5 in the past week.) I had hoped to be at this weight a month ago, but I am so happy to have re-ignited the spark with the Solution and to keep going. I still have another 74 to lose.

Part of the reason I want to lose weight is that I am tired of being restricted in where I can shop for clothes. It would be so nice to be able to walk into any clothing store and find something to wear. Not only is my clothing selection limited by my size but it's also more expensive! I feel like the people who market to larger sizes KNOW they have us over a barrel and can charge twice as much for a cute cotton sun dress because where else will we go to buy it?

The other part of my motivation is that diabetes and heart issues run in my family. I want to live a healthy life. I don't want to go down the road I watched others travel. And it's about time I took control of that path.

Day 8!

My biggest goal is to just feel better and to get up and move. The last few years have been difficult and my initial reaction was to just sit in front of the computer for HOURS. It is all I wanted to do. When someone tried to motivate me I was less then pleasant. Then I had a wake up call with 2 things. 1) I noticed my children doing the same thing I was. I did not want obese children who watched tv and played on the computer all day. I want them to have the best life possible so I need to lead by example. 2) My dad passed away last December. He was diabetic, had heart issues, kidney issues, and many more. He had been on pharmaceuticals for YEARS to try and keep everything in check. His body started rejecting things, his kidneys were failing, he was retaining water weight to the point he could not stand by himself, walk by himself, he would fall out of bed, ect.. It was hard to watch and it something I don't want to live through or put my kids through. If I can make a difference by eating right, healthy whole foods and exercise that is what I am going to do. Life is too precious and way too short.

My biggest challenge so far has been getting into a routine. Some days I exercise in the morning, some days I do in the afternoon, and somedays I squeeze it in at the 11th hour. My goal is to make it as much a part of my day as showering and eating.

Planning ahead with the food has been hard too. But the menus are easy and so far pretty good. I LOVED the english muffin with the cheese this morning. I never thought of using ricotta that way and I think of all of the ricotta I've thrown out because I did not use the entire amount in a recipe. Never again!

Week 2, day 8 is my weigh day. I've gained a pound. I dont understand. I'm not getting back on the scale for a week. it's to depressing. But today's topic fits. I am doing this ( healthy living) for so much more than the scale. I want more energy, more health, better med test results, better coping skills for mental health days.

That breakfast caught my eye but I didn't have the ingredients on hand. I get more adventitious with my breakfasts on the weekends, through the week I've been having frozen Spinach-Feta Breakfast Wraps or Mexican Breakfast Burritos because I can make them in batches and freeze them for a quick breakfast at the office.

Way to go Issy and everyone else!

I enjoyed the Sweet and Creamy English Muffin for breakfast this morning. I wasn't sure about it originally, but now I want to add it to the regular rotation :)

My motivation levels are soaring high. I lost 3 lbs. in my first week, I did a lot of swaps in the meals and also in the fitness area (by the way I did shorter minutes that I normally do) but it was good enough to get me out of a long plateau.
My goal from before was to be down to 170 by 5/24 my granddaughter HS graduation, I will be leaving home on Thursday to stay with them for the weekend (4.5 hours travel to So FL Royal Palm Beach).
I think I would have never made it without Spark Solution but now I see it happening.....I'm excited!
Now I have another short time goal for 6/22, I'm traveling again to So FL (Miami) for my aunt's 100 birthday celebration her Church is putting together for her. I want to be down to 165 lbs.
This is only my weight loss goals, the most important thing to me is my health, my energy and how I feel at 60.....the best I have felt at least in the last 10 years.
Recently I have add to hold a plank position for 30 seconds and working on to adding more time, is getting easier now, I also do wall push ups 2 reps of 15, 2 or 3 times a day.
I walk and jog in my treadmill every day, I do strength training, I have a stationary bike I watch TV from in the evenings, I can open any jar I want when I'm cooking, my clothes are fitting better....let me rephrased that, I'm in need to replace my entire closet.
I have eliminated acid reflux from my life, my blood pressure has been 117/69, my cholesterol is at normal levels now, and my blood sugar levels are also normal between 80 & 90. The only over the counter medication I take to supplement my good nutrition is a Women One a Day Multi Vitamin 50+.
Yes I have been active at SP web site for one year and eight month and my life has changed for the better, I use the food & fitness tracker every day, on Sunday when I get up I take my blood pressure, check my blood sugar take my temperature and weight myself, I log this in the other measurements tracker I look at my nutrition reports daily and I also look at the other reports at least once a month but I try to quickly look at them every Sunday....(my leisure day). I work from home so I go to the further bathroom from my office to put in the extra steps even thou I have a bathroom by my office, I park far away from the stores, my family hates it when they are with me....LOL!
Guys two years ago I was not able to walk 100 yards....I was totally sedentary and ache all over, working from the computer and I kept saying to myself, "I do not have time"....but I have learned how much I can do after I take my 45 - 60 minutes morning walk in my treadmill.
Good luck to all, I know emoticon

I have asthma and know that when my weight is down I have an easier time breathing and don't get short of breath as much. My motivation is to just feel better, not get so short of breath and to be able to walk up our hill without having to stop to catch my breath!

I'm finding the cooking part to be much more of a challenge. Not having the funds to purchase what is required to "do" this 2 week jumpstart I found I felt like I wouldn't be as successful as those that can follow it word by word. I've lost a pound I'll most likely not reach the "5 pounds" that the book says we should.

My motivation is to get off the massive amounts of the two insulins I take and not have to take 4+ shots a day.

I was very, very anxious about weighing in this morning because I've been in a nearly 3 month plateau where I have gained and lost the same 6 lbs and can't seem to get under 263. I knew if I stayed the same AGAIN I would be devastated and my will to keep trying would be put to a test. I also knew if I gained I would quit and binge. I was slightly panic stricken as I approached the scale to await my fate. Will I be tested? Will I quit? Will I binge?

Thank goodness I didn't have to face any of those responses, I am down 7 lbs since starting the Spark Solution last Monday, so that is a great start

emoticon

I have also reached the 70 pounds lost mark for the first time and finally gotten under 263 (only by 1 lb, but I'll take it)!!

My motivation is to be healthy and to get rid of some of these little aches and pains I've been starting to have in my knees. Looking forward to week 2. I think week 1 was successful for me.

I love the Bacon Swiss Scramble too. For me, the biggest food 'fail' last week was the biscuits and gravy. But since I can happily spend the rest of my life without ever eating biscuits and gravy again, it's no big deal. I am looking forward to another week of new recipes!

I'm starting week 2 feeling really good and motivated. My goal for starting this challenge was to couple healthy eating with exercise. It seems that I either do one or the other but never together. I'm sure that will ramp up my weight loss progress a lot quicker. I have found that I have been willing to try different foods this past week so my favorite meal so far is probably the Bacon Swiss Scramble. I never thought I would see the day when I eat spinach for breakfast on purpose! I was so excited yesterday when one of my kids brought me the mail (that had been sitting in the mailbox from the day before) and lo and behold there were my two complementary Coach Nicole videos! I had forgotten that I was getting them!! Gonna go get busy!! emoticon

I will be traveling at the end of the week for a mini vacation with my youngest (adult) daughter. Since she is very health conscious, we will be building exercise into each day, either at the hotel gym or in our activities. I will be trying to stay within the calorie range for each meal but will not be eating the food on the plan.

Good luck to all the travelers this week. Sounds like you each have a plan and that's a great start!

Thanks for the support and words of encouragement. To be honest, it'll be nice to get out of the kitchen but I don't want to derail my progress.

I'm considering taking a cooler with two of my frozen Mexican Breakfast Burritos and some apples and Greek yogurt so at least breakfast and snack will be taken care of. My room has a refrigerator and microwave and the hotel has a fitness room. NO EXCUESES.

Good luck, Toni. I'm on the road as well, with 3 hotel nights and several business meals. Planning to make the best choices I can. If you're taking a laptop or tablet remember you can always workout with a Spark People video.

My long awaited beach vacation is major motivation for me, not only do I want to be confident in my swimsuit (consisting of a full coverage one piece and 12" board shorts) but I want the
energy to make the most of it. I want to walk all around the islands, climb the light houses, run in the sand, kayak in the ocean and maybe even take a surf lesson. Last time I went kayaking with my family I was given a special big girl life vest that looked different than everyone else's and I'm the only one who bottomed out and had to pull my boat in three places.

I can't say that I don't have time for cooking and working out, more that I don't have the ambition. I'm lazy and I'm a home body. These habits are hard to break but I am working on it. I had zero take out last week, I'm not sure I've ever done that before. Even growing up we'd have fast food a couple times a week. My weight is down, I'm less bloated, my skin is clearer but my ambition/motivation level is still hard and my sleep has not improved at the end of week one. These steps in week one have not become habits yet.

I have a lot of fear and nervousness about this week, I'm traveling today and in a hotel for two nights, my hotel offers room service desserts from The Cheesecake Factory. Two weeks ago I would have ordered two slices of cheesecake and eaten them alone in my room while self loathing. I need to avoid that depressing trap tonight.

I found a restaurant just under a mile from my hotel that has a light menu. I'm eying the Veggie Mini Pizza for dinner, 576 calories, 8 grams of fat, 45 carbs plus it will still be satisfying and feel like a treat. So that's my plan, walk over, eat and walk back. I should also rethink my packing strategy. When I had trouble fitting my running shoes in my overnight bag, rather than finding a bigger bag I removed my workout clothes... I definitely need a mindset makeover there. The good news is, it's not too late to repack!

This week I want to focus on my carbs.
I am learning slowly but surely. I have s- l-o-w-l-y lost 54 pounds but it has stayed off.
Now I want to not have more that 50 grams of carbs in each meal and that is hard for me.
So that's my goal.

Do not post in this thread before Day 8 (May 20).

Spark It Up or Make It Work? We included these options for days when you want to do more or need to do less. Which of these options are you choosing more often? Do you find it harder to fit in fitness or cooking? How can we help you stay on track and reach your goals?
