I havent even started it yet but ...

here are the questions:

1. which character do you think is the biggest liar

2. Ingrid believes she is a bad mother. Do you agree? why or why not?

3. Do you sympathize with Gil? Do your feelings about him change throughout the book?

4. What lessons do you think Flora and Ingrid learn over the course of the book? Does Gil learn anything?

5. How much do you see Ingrids domestic life, with her husband and children, as a product of her own making, and how much do yuou think it is imposed upon her?

6. Near the end of the book, Flora and Richard speculate about their future as a couple. How do you imagine Floras story continues?

7.Did you root for Ingrid and Jonathan to fall in love? Whit might their relationship might have looked like?

8. Do you think its better to leave the end of a story up to the imagination or to know the truth?

9. What do you believe happened to Ingrid as you read? Did that belief change once you finished the book?

10. There are lots of things hidden in books and in Swimming Lessons itself. If you could hide anything in a book what would it be a nd what book would you choose?

Thanks for the new book. I was reluctant to post the other book because I was afraid of the reaction I might get. Some people are afraid of anything that tests the norm and I did not want to insult or hurt someone.

If anyone wants a challenging book, try me,myself, they. It is about gender fluidity and if anyone has gay, lesbian, asexual, etc family or friends, this book helps understand the fears, etc surrounding not be recognized or understood, and the struggle face to be recognized and loved as they are. Over the last year three family members have come to me and explained their sexual preferences and how they feel and I found this book extremely helpful. As my husband saidwhen someone in the family tells their stories the reaction is more like...cool, love you, do you know what is for dessert?

It doesnt get much response, no one is hurtful, patronizing, disgusted, etc, just interested, emoticon it is just part of the course. I do have to thank them for opening a world I had the do more research to understand more fully. Who knew in our binary view I was cis - new term for heterosexual.

I read "light" physics books, like "The Quantum Physics Bible" ... probably not a big hit here.

But my wife used to read "The Cat who ..." mysteries by Lillian Jackson Braun, here on Wikipedia is info on Lillian and the series. Sadly she died in 2011:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilian_
Jackson_B
raun

She wrote 29 books in that series, though my wife said the last few (last 6 or 7 ?) were slipping in quality. Still, the first 20 or so are probably good if you like mystery (less violence, more mystery in murder / mystery book), and if you like cats ...

She loved them, and once she read took them, she took them to her mom in Germany, who also enjoyed them. Her mom likes reading before bedtime, and strangely likes reading in English, and likes mysteries too.

Good to see so many finding the thread!

My Swimming Lessons arrived today (that was fast! I ordered it from Amazon Australia yesterday!!) but next time hopefully I can find a copy of what we choose to read on my computer.

I think I'll get a head start and begin reading it in November. Then bring on the discussion. Lol!

I don't like Harlequin romances either. I do love historical fiction, especially ones based on real events with made up people who could have lived through these events, some biographies, funny books, I am not big on sex scene ones, will read the occasional crime solving book, and love twists and turns in plots.

I did read the whole Diana Gabaldan series about Claire and Jamie many years ago.

I'm reading a funny book called A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka at the moment. The story 'yields a golden harvest of family truths' as it is a book about two feuding sisters who have to put their quarrels aside to try to save their emigre engineer father (age 84) from voluptuous gold-digger Valentina (age 36). They unearth family secrets and 50 years of Europe's darkest history which sends them back to roots they'd much rather forget....

OK-- found you all!!! I was stuck on the first set of subjects & posts

I then realized there were many different segments so I just kept looking at the section titles.

DUH!!!

I have 4 books going right now. Mostly I use audio. One in my bedroom, one here in my sitting area, one in the laundry area and one in the car. and YES it does take me a few paragraphs to get my brain going and the current story line. I'll pick up 3 of the recommended books tomorrow: SOLD; Breakfast of Champions and Swimming Lessons.

i like love stories if they arent the whole story (not harlequin romances with all the explicit sex stuff)..but part of the story. I like books that develop the characters and have a plot.

IWANT- I don't go for love stories either. This is more mystery and fiction. Its reading letters from ones life experiences throughout the war. Juliet was an army pilot in a mans world. Extraordinary story and characters. Not a spoiler----as Juliet ages and starts forgetting things she decides to start writing these letters of life changing occurrences of her life. Fascinating. There is a little romance, but that is not the story. Keep an open mind. Read: The Last Letter from Juliet by Melanie Hudson.

I'm excited to get Swimming Lessons, it sounds like a good read!

thanks for the clickable link, James.

I think everyone should just put in questions...and we just discuss it..no need for a leader. I've been talking to my friend who teaches and is very involved in her book club, and one other..and she said they all just contribute..what they think, why they like it, ask the rest of the groups opinion on things not understood or not clear.

She said they get books some love others hate, take turns picking a book, if someone has already read one and doesnt want to read it again thats fine..they just come to the meeting anyhow if they like ...and sometimes they take the time they didnt use up reading to look for new books.

when picking books they also give a synopsis before everyone buys it. and if more say its not up their alley they pick something different. and they ask people to give all types of books a try.

Yay!! Swimming Lessons it is!! I'm excited. Since I chose it, I'll lead it.

Not sure how to do that, but I imagine after everyone is done reading it, we have a question like discussion? Sometimes there is that in the back of the book. I'll see.

Or we can all put in a question, so we get all types of discussion? I'm open to anything.

I so want to read some books. I found Swimming Lessons on Amazon in Kindle format. My ereader only handles epub files? Otherwise i will have to try and find a hard copy somewhere, unless my local library has it. Will check!

EDITED: Yes! They have it at the library!!

Thought we could move this to here, and then have the book club as the first sticky.
