NIGHTSKYSTAR,
looking for "gentle" murder mysteries? I just remembered, there is a whole series of books by Lillian Jackson Braun

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilian_
Jackson_B
raun

From 1966 until 2007 she wrote 29 mysteries: "The cat who ..." My wife liked them for a long time, but the ones later in the series seemed to be of lesser quality (according to her). As if Lillian was trying to meet a publishing date and cutting corners. But my guess is that she was just running out of ideas. Still the first 20 are probably good. So if you read one (an earlier one) and you like it ... plenty more to come.

The main character, a journalist, solves mysteries with cats Koko and Yum Yum in Pickax, northeast central United States.

I finished Raven Black tonight. Though I briefly suspected who the murderer was, the ending was a good twist that I didn't expect. :)

I bought The Only Woman in the room tonight and will start it soon.

i'm about a third of the way done "the only woman in the room". the first 10 chapters were really interesting. now its getting into uncomfortable waters. as the daughter of a WW2 soldier whos full ancestry is german, its a very difficult period in our history for me to read about.

Don't really think the book is scary in the horror sense.....

Really don't mind if we don't read it.

I think someone had already come up with one for after we get done with the next one (THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE ROOM).

It would be great to discuss Raven Black among ourselves :) A set of questions could focus our discussion but I think we are all pretty good at chatting about the book without them.

I'm afraid (lol) I wouldn't read a Stephen King book if it was scary either. I read quite a few of his earlier ones and had to give them up due to how fearful they made me feel at night. Lol! He is a good writer, very convincing.

Yeah I'm currently living alone too and a scary book would be - well scary. No problem if others want to read it though. My son LOVES Stephen King books. I know he's a great author.

I finished RAVEN BLACK. Funny thing, I never had much of any ideas on who the killer was while I was reading. That made the ending very exciting for me.

Don't much care if we have any questions to discuss or just discuss the book on our own.

I know we have next month's book already - so thinking ahead, how do you all feel about Stephen King's new book THE INSTITUTE?

I do think someone mentioned that someone else did suggest a book before....don't remember what it might have been?

So...dont know if anyone wants questions on Raven Black..i'm not big on the questions i'd rather just discuss but thats up to everyone. i looked for questions and found a lot of discussions like in my louise penny groups and that seems to work well..we dont want to say anything till everyone is done no spoliers, but i couldnt find listed questions like with Swimming Lessons. Whats everyone think?
i'm loving this, though..while i love reading i never have time and with this i MAKE time. which is good. and i can do one a month even in my busy months. Thanks to whoever suggested this!

i really liked the end..i love to have to think. KD that one sounds good!!
I got next months in the mail yesterday..this one may be harder for me..i'm not a biography enjoyer though i've found some i like and i have high hopes for this one. i only have one pickup tomorrow so might knock off a few chapters. i did order the next one in the series after raven black. my louise penny pages AND louise herself..and our own Read, says the series is great so i'm going to read book 2 when i'm done with februarys.

if someone wants to suggest one for march..i need to get my ducks in a row early as i'll be away helping my mom with her knee replacement.

I think it was Read that suggested one she really liked that wasnt coming out till January. or another one is fine too i just dont want to miss one someone is that enthusiastic over!!

Holly NY- I'm so happy you liked the book. To me, as I read the next ones it was easier to follow. Familiar characters and even their lingo became enduring. I have NOT once figured out who done it!!!!! So many possibilities. Everyone seems guilty. I love the way Ann Cleeves writes and how she brings you in to the story.

another reason i like this book so far..i'm thinking. i have about 6 different people i think could have done it..and i know..i just feel it..there will be a twist. sometimes the twist is that its exaclty who it points to..sometimes someone you'd never even think of...sometimes the one you hoped it wasnt...
i love books like this. wasnt sure in the beginning if i was going to like it...but i do. i woke up this morning laid in bed and read more. i dont have time for that but i had to know what happened from the chapter before. thank goodness lucy woke up and let me know it or i'd still be there...HAHA and this from miss up at 4 every morning!!

Oh I love Gordon Ramsay. This author is growing on me. The story seems to be moving pretty slowly, but she's really developed the characters nicely so far. Will probably finish it by the weekend.

Remember anyone can jump in - we will not discuss this book until February!!

And then read in February IWANT's choice for discussion in March!!

Edited to add : March book "The Only Woman In The Room" by Marie Benedict.

I must have missed when you all started reading Raven Black by Ann Cleeves. She is one of my favorite authors. "The Shetland series" is fantastic I'm on the third to the last one in the series. Its the language that stumps me sometimes, Is it Scottish? Gaelic? some made up islander speak? I look up what I can. Some are just a type of slang I think. I just re-read the sentence a few times and figure out what they are saying. Her other series that I completed reading "The Vera Stanhope series" is where the PBS show "VERA" came from. Author is the best story teller ever !!! Big Fan. I have found most of her books at the library. A few I ordered the paperback-used on Amazon for around $4.

never heard of those KD....will look for them. i have plex on my tv and can find most everything there.
i figure they have to develop the characters in a series in the first book. while i loved Still Life by Penny, it was a little hard to get through until i learned the characters.

Checked out Raven Black at the library yesterday. First chapter done. So far so good. I agree - it's good to stretch yourself. And find new authors you like (and then read all the books).

Also checked out Sandra Oh's "Killing Eve" DVD at the library. Has anyone ever watched those?

I started reading the book Raven Black by Anne Cleeves.
I think It is a different style of writing than the Louise Penny books.

I am starting Chapter Nineteen today.
It is getting more interesting as I get a better understanding of the characters in the book.
I enjoy reading mysteries and so far so good.

I agree with IWANT that we learn something different from every book we read, even if it one that tests out patience like the last one ( Swimming Lessons) . LOL

I want i don’t like gory or scary. I lone Louise penny books as they are mostly about the main characters, keep you guessing, and the charming town that they revolve around in most of the books. I’m the penny discussion group I’m in on Facebook many have said Anne Cleeves writes like penny.
I’m 10 chapters in and don’t agree, but I’m continuing to read..i want to know what happens next so that’s a good thing. Don’t know yet if I’ll read any more of her works.
I tend to get stuck on one author—if I dine one I like, which isn’t too often. So it’s good to try others.

Im not crazy about mysteries....... I want to be shocked , scared or entertained when I read a book LOL! But, I have branched out a bit I belong to my local Ys book club also and their books are not ones I would choose for myself. What the heck, reading is good and you almost always learn something from every book you read.

KD she is very, very vocal about his Alzheimers. Having had it effect my family (my dad died from it) i'm very, very grateful to her for the exposure and her dedication to seeing inroads made. I personally feel that keto is a way to prevent or slow it...so i closely follow anyone i find that is so keen on helping eradicate it. Shes a very special woman that has overcome a lot.

Okay yes Holly - I misspoke the disease. Someone else close to me has cancer, and I superimposed it on her hubby. You are correct - it was Alzheimer's but it was a wonderful tribute to her DH in the forwards in the books.

KD Are youvtalking about Louise Penny with her husband? He had Alzheimer’s...and she gives huge portions of her book sales to Alzheimer’s research and programs.
One of these days I’m going to take the short ride to Knowlton Quebec where she lives and bases the books. If you go to the bookstore there’s even a 3 pines map you can get to visit places she’s referenced.

Louise Penney (Armand Gamache) books are like a tv show. Each episode (book) stands on it's own, but the back ground line with the characters continues throughout the series. I do believe you'd love the series IWANT but I think reading in a row is best. But if you want to read only one, start at the beginning.

Also, in her personal life, the author shares her journey about her husband going through cancer and dying and how difficult it was. She bases the main character on her husband, and I found that very compelling.

So RAVEN BLACK it is for February. Yay!!
