Himalayan Salt

A long time ago, layers of sea salt crystals deep within the Himalayan mountain range were blanketed by lava. Many experts believe that this lava coating has helped keep the salt clean, pure, and free of environmental pollutants. Somehow, over the course of many years, this mix of red, pink, and white salt has made its way to gourmet food markets and dinner tables across the country.

Another use is that it stimulates circulation.

Before your next shower, mix some Himalayan salt with coconut oil and an essential oil of your choosing, and use this as a scrub. The massaging will help improve circulation and relax your muscles, and the salt acts as a natural exfoliant. Given that this salt has so many healing properties, it’s a soothing experience for the mind and the body.

Zap your zits by using aspirin.

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, aspirin can help reduce redness and inflammation caused by pimples. Crush an aspirin pill and add a small amount of water to make a paste. Leave the paste on affected areas for 10 minutes or so before washing off.

Guacamole - Avoid "guacamole dip" and "guacamole-styled dip"

While the guacamole you make at home or order at a restaurant contains plenty of avocados, the stuff you’re buying at the store might not have any at all. If you find guacamole on a store shelf and the label says "guacamole dip”"or "guacamole style dip" take a look at the ingredients. If the nutrition label has water as the first ingredient and contains avocado powder, you’re not getting the real deal. Avoid buying an impostor by going to the refrigerated section of your store or grabbing the ingredients to make it yourself.

Jose Garces' Guacamole

2 Servings

Ingredients:
1 1/2 avocados
2 tbsp Spanish onions
1 tbsp roasted jalapenos
1 tbsp cilantro
2 tbsp lime juice
salt, to taste

Directions:
1. Mash and mix ingredients in a molcajete (stone mortar and pestle).
2. Serve immediately

Tip: Iron Chef winner Jose Garces is an expert on authentic Latin cuisine. According to Chef Garces, the biggest guac mistake people make is using avocados that are too hard; using ripe avocados will result in soft, creamy guacamole. Chef Garces' other guacamole tip: If you're not going to eat it right away, stick the avocado pit back in the guac and cover the dish with plastic wrap until ready to serve.

Fidgeting Is Good Medicine!

When you are sitting for a long stretch, like at work or on a flight, experts advise walking every hour to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots. But fidgeting may be a good alternative. In a University of Missouri study people who sat for 3 hours but tapped one foot for 60 seconds every 4 minutes had an increase in blood flow in that leg that was enough to prevent a decline in arterial function, a risk factor for blood clots.

An added bonus:

So fidget! Fidget at your desk, fidget at the bus stop, fidget anywhere you are! Just FIDGET!!!

Short Exercise - 'Exercise Snacking'

Forget the gym! The quickest way to get back in shape after the holidays could be short bursts of physical activity throughout the day. Scientists say so-called "exercise snacking" better controls blood sugar than one longer, continuous workout.

James Brown is a lecturer in biology and biomedical science at Aston University. He says these studies collectively highlight the importance of making sure we keep active throughout the day and increasing the amount of energy we use up in non-exercise activities that we normally do during everyday life, from walking up stairs to playing musical instruments.

Lifting weights makes you SMARTER??!!

A new study found that people who regularly lift weights also develop more BRAIN POWER than people who don’t. So lifting can actually make you SMARTER.

It’s not a huge amount, and you probably won’t notice it while you’re young. But it becomes a BIG deal as you get older and that weight training helps your brain fight off Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Why a Yearly Eye Exam is Important

Did you know that your eyes can be an indicator of your overall health? Eye doctors can sometimes detect early signs of disease by looking at the blood vessels in your eyes. For example, diabetes can cause small blood vessel leaks, as well as swelling of the most sensitive light-sensing part of the eye.

Brain Power

To keep cognition sharp, aim for 97 grams of dairy (the amount in 4 oz. of cheese or yogurt) daily, advise researchers in the journal of the American Geriatric Society. They tracked 1,081 adults and found that doing so cuts Alzheimer’s risk by 61 percent. The study authors credit dairy’s brain-healthy nutrients like vitamin B-12 and whey protein. Plus, dairy is known to boost the brain’s levels of glutathione, an antioxidant that fights oxidative stress linked to Alzheimer’s

A 2-Minute Walk May Counter the Harms of Sitting

Robin Marcus, PT, PhD associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Utah Health Science states that two minutes is about how much time you should spend strolling every hour to combat the harmful effects of sitting. In fact, a brisk walk could lower your risk of premature death by 33%. Set an alarm for every 30 to 60 minutes and take a lap around the office and when watching TV at home, use commercial brakes as a remainder to get moving.

When It's Time For Bed, Make Your Room Cold

When it’s time for bed, your body’s core temperature begins to cool down in order to prep for sleep. Help yourself fall asleep faster and easier by setting the temperature in your room to 65 degrees – which is the ideal temperature for sleep. Your body will cool faster, giving you time for maximum shut-eye.

Feed That Cold! (And Starve That Fever!!!)

Looks like what Grandma said was right all along!

A new study out of the Yale School of Medicine found that the old saying "feed a cold, starve a fever" is pretty much SPOT ON! The researchers found that when you have a viral infection like a cold or the flu, eating helps you recover and get through it.

But when you have a fever because of a bacterial infection like a staph infection or food poisoning, eating actually makes things worse. Scientists say to avoid sugary foods and stick to small portions of things like chicken and yogurt.

Did you know that drinking coffee in moderation can help lower your risk of heart disease?

That first morning cup of coffee might seem like a necessary evil to drag your brain out of dreamland, but coffee brings with it a wide variety of compounds that can be good for your health. Studies have indicated that drinking coffee might lower your risk of heart disease and overall risk of death. The key is not to have too much. Try to keep your consumption to one to two cups per day, which strikes a good balance between health and not becoming too dependent on the effects of caffeine.

Regular pot of full-fat yogurt licks the blues: How you can keep depression at bay with just your spoon

Women who eat full-fat yogurt once a day are less likely to become depressed.
A Spanish study shows that women who had full-fat yogurt at least seven times a week were a third less likely to develop depression in the following decade. The reason why, however, is not known, but earlier research suggested that the brain sends signals to the gut, which is why stress and other emotions can cause gastrointestinal symptoms.

Low-fat yogurt did not have the same effect. Nearly 15-thousand men and women were assessed with questionnaires at the start of the study and then again after ten years.

Avoid a Summer Cold

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), winter colds are caused by rhinoviruses but summer colds are caused by more resilient enteroviruses. The irony of summer colds is that they can last longer than winter colds and may make you feel even worse. Here's one tip to stay cold-free: Stay hydrated this summer. When the weather gets hotter, your dehydrated body could be a breeding ground for a summer virus. Flush out your system and strengthen your immune system by drinking water throughout the day. If you’re not a fan of the taste of water, try infusing it with fresh fruits and herbs.

Natural Aid To Help You Have A Better Sleep

Having trouble falling asleep? A teaspoon of honey before bed might help you snooze. Honey facilitates the passage of tryptophan in the brain, an amino acid that can help make you sleepy.

Warm milk with honey

- All you need is 1 glass of warm up milk. Heat until it’s a little hotter than you would normally drink it, put 1 tablespoon of honey and stir it.
- Sprinkle with a half teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and let it cool to a temperature that is still warm but drinkable.
- You can make this drink 30 minutes before you go to bed when you start winding down, sip slowly, and enjoy.

Burn Calories by being a "Mindful Mover"

To be a “mindful mover,” take the stairs when you can, and get off the elevator a floor or two before your stop. Walk around while talking on the phone. Park your car farther from your destination. Stand on one leg while you brush your teeth. Housework counts — a double bonus of a workout and a clean house. Keep track of your steps with a wearable, or a simple pedometer.

Makeover Your Milkshake

Swap out your milkshake for a healthy avocado smoothie. Avocados make fruit smoothies creamier so you can skip out on the extra calories and fat you would get from a milkshake and still satisfy your sweet tooth.

Makes 2

Ingredients:
1/2 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
1/2 large banana
1/4 cup (60g) low-fat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup ice (about 2 cubes), plus more for serving
3/4 to 1 can (125ml) coconut water, depending on your preferred thickness
1 tsp agave nectar (light or dark)
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling

Directions:
Combine all of the ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and frothy. Sprinkle additional cinnamon on top and serve.

How to Realistically Quit Sugar

Satisfy your sweet craving the healthy way with cinnamon or frozen berries. Both are low in sugar but still taste sweet and won't spike your blood sugar, leading to an energy crash later in the day.

Just like you can build up the muscles in your body, you can also do the same for the small muscles in your eyes. Try this simple eyes exercise to strengthen the muscles in your eyes so you can better focus:

1. Stretch your arm out in front of you with your thumb pointing up
2. Now move your hand around in a circular motion
3. Follow your thumb with your eyes only, don’t move your head
4. Keep your thumb and the background in focus

People who get daily hugs are less likely to get sick. That’s according to research from Carnegie Melon University. The physical contact and social support that go along with hugging both reduce stress. And when our stress is lower - our immune system is stronger. The end result is, people who give and receive daily hugs have a 32% boost to their immune system.

You can determine your resting heart rate by counting the number of beats of your pulse per one minute. This number is a barometer of what's going on in the body. Studies have shown that women with a resting heart rate over 90 have triple the risk of dying from a heart attack as women with a resting heart rate under 60.

If you've got a bad case of heartburn, eat a banana. According to “The People’s Pharmacy Guide to Home Remedies” – a banana can put out the fire within 30 minutes. And eating one banana a day can stop flare-ups within two weeks. That's because bananas coat the stomach lining, which prevents the overproduction of stomach acid, and reduces the amount of acid that splashes back up into your esophagus.

To be more productive you should stop multitasking. Studies show that it can take 15 - 20 minutes to recover each time we shift focus. Also, multitasking boosts production of stress hormones, like cortisol - which clouds our thinking - making us LESS productive.

Your cold feet may be the reason that you can't sleep. Your body temperature begins to cool down when it's time to go to sleep and cold feet can make your body a little too cool for optimal sleep. Improve your circulation and regulate your core temperature by putting athletic socks on before bed.

Most people associate bananas with high levels of potassium, but there are so many other foods that can give your body this essential nutrient. Fish, broccoli, peas, and sweet potatoes are all examples of foods in your diet that can help maintain healthy potassium levels and promote healthy nerves, muscles, and regular heart function.

If your hair is starting to look a little lackluster and you have tons of split ends, rub some avocado on it to fix the problem. Avocados naturally hydrate hair to repair your locks and make them shine. Mix avocado, egg yolk, and olive oil together and apply to the ends of your wet hair. Repeat a couple times a week until you begin to see the amazing results. (Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 20 min. Then rinse off.)

Epsom salt can help to relieve sore muscles after workouts. Create a muscle-relaxing "paste" by dissolving a teaspoon of Epsom salt into a cup of hot water and cooling the solution in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

Excessive added sugar in your diet can lead to serious problems like heart disease. Check your food labels and make sure you're not eating more than 100 calories of added sugar a day to ensure a healthy heart.

Try adding some low-fat Greek yogurt and white beans into your diet to increase your calcium intake. If your body does not get the amount of calcium it needs it takes calcium from your bones to compensate, leading to potentially severe problems later in life. So beat your body to the punch and make sure you're getting your daily dose of calcium.

Despite what you may have been told, chocolate can be healthy for you - just as long as it's made up of 70% cocoa. Cocoa is really helpful at lowering your blood pressure and stress levels. So, indulge this afternoon with a small serving of dark chocolate.

If you're craving something crunchy, like potato chips, try eating crunchy fruits or veggies such as carrots, celery, or apples instead. You'll feel satisfied and guilt-free!

Have ants and don't know how to get rid of them? Use baby powder! Simply sprinkle the baby powder in areas that are prone to ant infestation and say goodbye to your insect problems and worries.
