Put structure to positive use

Structures can be confining. They can also be supportive, and even liberating.

If your life has no structure, you have very few limits on what you can do. Yet you lack any kind of reliable foundation from which to act.

Language, for example, is highly structured. To successfully use language, you have to learn a lot of rules, and acquire an extensive vocabulary.

That's very demanding. However, within the demanding structure is the opportunity for rich, meaningful communication with others.

Perhaps you feel you are being held back by certain physical, social, or professional structures. But maybe you're choosing to see just the limitations, and not the opportunities.

A powerful structure can work against you or in your favor, depending on the perspective you choose. See if you can put the structures in your life to positive use, and align their power with your best interests.

Start sooner

When you're unsure of what you're doing, hurrying through it does not improve your outcome. When you don't know where it is you must go, going quickly will not get you there.

If you think dashing around makes you look important, you're mistaken. It shouts to the world of confusion, disorganization, aimlessness and insecurity.

Here's a strategy far superior to hurrying. Start sooner.

Start sooner, and give yourself the luxury of being calm, focused, highly effective, and more pleasant to be around. Start sooner, and leverage your time instead of rushing to squeeze your efforts into it.

Work, play, and live at a pace that enables life's richness to come to full fruition. Get the very most out of your time by beginning to make good use of it the instant it arrives.

Even if you've been late all your life, you can begin right away to start sooner. Start sooner, for a new moment, laden with brilliant possibilities, has just been added to your life.

Let life catch up to you. Don't get so ensnared in chasing what seems important that you forget what's truly important.

Enjoy not just the times when you've racked up an impressive achievement. Enjoy every moment along the way.

Allow the way things are right now, to be enough for right now. There is much you can do to make life better, yet already there is much in life that is good.

Balance your ambition for what can be with your gratitude and appreciation for what is. After all, if you can never be satisfied with what you have, there's no gain in getting more.

Perhaps the longing you feel is not really a longing to acquire more. Perhaps it is a longing to more fully appreciate all that is already yours.

Time is a limited resource for everyone, no matter how many other resources they have. Yet when you make intentional use of time, there are no limits to what you can do with it.

What do you regret not doing because you didn't have enough time? Let the sting of that regret motivate you to make better use of all the time that's now coming your way.

Don't merely wish that you had started sooner. Transform that wish into determination, into action going forward, into achievement.

Just because something is new, doesn't make it better. Just because something has a higher price, doesn't mean it is more desirable.

Just because you disagree with someone on one issue, doesn't make that person wrong about everything. Just because everyone agrees, doesn't make something true, or right.

It's easy to oversimplify, to make sweeping generalizations, to base your actions solely on assumptions. It's better, though, to employ reason, mental effort, experience, and discipline.

Before you jump to a conclusion you might regret, pause, calm down, gather your thoughts. Take a few steps back from the issue, put it in perspective, look at the bigger picture.

Take a good, dispassionate look at the objective facts. Evaluate the content of what's being said apart from your opinions about the person saying it.

Make clear reasoning your goal, not demonstrating how quick or clever or pompous you can be. Let truth and usefulness be your most desired conclusions.

It's actually pretty ridiculous to fear that you're missing out on something. Because every day, day after day, you're missing out on more than ninety-nine percent of everything that's going on.

Since long before you were born, and continuing up to this moment, you've been missing out. Even so, with all you've missed, you've managed to have quite a few amazing and fulfilling experiences.

Imagine that you were somehow able to experience everything, to have everything, all the time. Think of how intensely sad and empty that would be.

If you could do everything, nothing would have any special meaning. It is precisely because you cannot participate in everything, that enables those things you can do, to have value.

Instead of worrying about what you're missing, throw yourself into fully living all you have, right here, right now. Make whatever you're doing so valuable, so meaningful, that you're happy to forgo all the other possibilities to get it done.

You can only do so much. Understand and celebrate what a great thing that is.

Use what you have

If you have a whole lot, use what you have. If you have very little, use what you have.

When you have plenty of time, make full use of it. When you have very little time, make full use of it.

Whether you have a little or a lot, or somewhere in between, use what you have. Whether it's top-notch or bottom-tier, make good use of what you have.

Wishing for a different starting point won't carry you forward. Instead, go with what you've got and work to make it into what you want.

Rather than getting caught up in what you have or don't have, or the quality or quantity, zero in on what you can do. Whatever the situation, use it to follow your purpose, to express your values, to support and expand what you love.

Center your awareness and your energy around the main issue, which is always this. What good, useful, meaningful things will you do with what you have?

Envision goodness

There have always been serious problems in the world. Even so, a whole lot of people have made a whole lot of amazing progress.

Today, difficult, frustrating challenges exist in your world, your town, your life. And right along with those challenges are plenty of valuable opportunities.

You can live a positive, meaningful life in a world that's too often negative. Because you have the power to envision goodness and then bring that goodness to life.

The status quo may be oppressive and overwhelming, but it doesn't have to remain the status quo. You can see a better way, you can resolutely go in that direction, and invite others to come along.

Decide you'll find a way to turn the problems around so they add to your progress rather than detract from it. Commit yourself to a positive perspective that guides you in making constant changes for the better.

See the difficulties clearly, acknowledge the challenges fully. Then envision goodness, and do the work to make that goodness happen.

Let yourself do your best

By Ralph Marston

Don't let the strength of your intention get in the way of fulfilling that intention. Don't let your obsession with a specific result diminish the quality of that result.

Let go, and let yourself do your best. Lose yourself in the process, and allow your anxiety to melt away.

Focus, but don't obsess. Put forth effort, but don't needlessly escalate it into a struggle.

Know what you are aiming to achieve while keeping your awareness on the step you're currently taking. Invest yourself in a positive outcome but don't base your whole identity on that outcome.

Put your energy into making your efforts effective, not into worrying about where your efforts will lead. Build the next level, write the next sentence, make the next call, visualize the next step and take it.

Seek to make it about what you're doing, not about you, not about what you'll get. And you'll enable yourself to consistently work with excellence.

Rein in your brain

By Ralph Marston

Rein in your brain. Think about what you do before you do it, but don't overthink.

Think it through, then quickly act on what you think. Keep your thoughts going, but don't let them stop you from making progress.

Are there things you've thought of doing, things you've wanted to do, that you're not doing? Stop thinking about them so much and start acting on them.

Honor and value your thoughts by committing them to action. Go ahead, take the first step, and then keep going.

Your thoughts are powerful, and it's easy to let them become a substitute for action. It's much better, though, to let your thoughts push you into action.

Doing what you intend to do is not really that difficult. Just stop thinking so much about it, and start acting on it.

Purposeful activities

By Ralph Marston

Your success is not determined by how busy you are. It is determined by how well your accomplishments satisfy your purpose.

Living a meaningful life is not necessarily about racking up a profusion of impressive feats. Having much to boast about is not the same as having much to live for.

Yes, be ambitious. And make sure it means something, to you, to your world, your values, your purpose.

What good things would you do even if no one would ever know you had done them? What places would you visit just for the experience, not for the selfie photos or bragging rights?

Do those things, go to those places. When deciding what to do, make sure it means something.

Merely being busy for the sake of being busy rewards you with anxiety and not much else. It's being purposeful in the activities you choose, that brings you true fulfillment.

Surprises

You can influence the future but you cannot control it. Keep that distinction in mind.

If everything were to happen according to plan, life would be terribly monotonous. Much of what you treasure in life, you didn't know about in advance.

People, activities, knowledge, concepts will surprise you, and that's a good thing. Life is open-ended, no matter how diligently you prepare for it.

Accept that open-endedness. Be okay with not knowing, with being surprised every now and then.

True, some of the surprises won't be pleasant. Yet all of them give you the chance to add some new aspect to the richness of life.

Do your best to create a good future, but don't reject life if it's not precisely the way you imagined it. Welcome the surprises, and take each one as an opportunity to feel more fully alive.

Love what you remember and all you can look forward to. Love the joy, the effort, the tears, the laughter, the tumult, the stillness.

Love life, in its grand expanse and its minuscule details. Love that you can give your best, always, to all you love.

Pay attention to your wishes

Do you wish to have all your work for the day finished? Then devote your time to doing it, now and until it is done.

Your wishes will show you what to do, but they wonít do it. Thatís your job, your responsibility, your privilege.

Do you wish you had done things differently in the past? Thatís a wish you canít fulfill, yet itís one you can use to improve your life as you move forward.

Although you can no longer prevent the mistakes of your past, you can stop yourself from repeating them. That will make a real and positive difference in your life.

On their own, your wishes wonít make anything happen. However, informed and inspired by those wishes, you can make a lot of great things happen.

Pay attention to your wishes, and then get to work. Today, and every day, you have the opportunity to make your best wishes come true.

Allow joy to live

Sometimes, missing out on what you enjoy gives you the opportunity to discover something else you'll enjoy more. Rather than being resentful about the way life unfolds, be enthusiastic about the unfolding possibilities.

When you so choose, you can make every moment a new adventure. Dare to go beyond what's comfortable and familiar, and uncover new pathways to express your purpose.

You've learned that you love and enjoy many people, places, activities. Give yourself the chance to learn how much more you can love.

This day, this place, this situation might be much more fulfilling than you're allowing it to be. Instead of wishing for the enjoyment of doing something else, create a new kind of joy out of right now.

Let the moment be. Let yourself live the goodness of it.

Don't make your joy dependent on some narrow, specific configuration of reality. Allow joy to live and thrive, wherever you are, whatever you're doing.

All along the way

You don't really win by causing others to lose. You win by doing something of value.

Your ability to truly win is independent of what other people do. Winning exists in the process more than the result.

Yes, you want the result to be positive and valuable. That's how you determine the nature and extent of your effort.

Yet the winning does not come only in the reward. The winning comes also in everything you do to reach the reward.

You are living life in every moment, and you wouldn't want the reward to only be at the end. For the reward to be maximized, it must be present throughout the whole process.

Choose the priorities and actions that enable you to win not just at the end of the undertaking, but all along the way. Every day, every moment, take the opportunity to truly win.

Limits

If you had all the time in the world, you wouldn't ever get anything done. Because you could always, always, do it later.

If you had all the money in the world, whatever you bought would mean nothing to you. Because you could always buy more.

The reason you're able to value your time is because it is limited. The reason money has value is because there is not an unlimited supply of it.

Limits can feel oppressive and burdensome. Yet those same limits are what make things precious and valuable.

Limits provide a structure within which you can work to flourish. It is by making your way through a world with limits that you create and experience fulfillment.

See life's limits for the opportunities they are. Sieze those opportunities with joy, with enthusiasm, and make them into real life value.

Improving your outcome

By Ralph Marston

When your efforts are not producing desired results, that's not a reason to stop. It's a reason to adjust, and to keep going.

Quitting doesn't improve your outcome. Perseverance is what will create the outcome you desire.

When you're disappointed with the way things have unfolded, that's no reason to run away and hide. It's a reason to get more involved in making the future brighter than the past.

Don't become immobilized by regrettable results. Instead, make good use of what you learn from them and the way you feel about them.

Based on the new experience you've gained, re-orient your efforts to be more effective. Tap into the energy of your disappointment and point it in a positive direction.

See the undesirable outcome for what it is, the first step toward your desired outcome. Then move forward and do the rest of the work to take you exactly where you want to be.

Let resistance fall away

By Ralph Marston

Much of what makes anything difficult is your resistance to it. That's a difficulty you can quickly eliminate whenever you choose.

There's nothing inherently difficult about getting up at five in the morning to work out. Once you drop the resistance to it, once you're fully committed, it becomes a pleasure rather than a difficulty.

The resistance is real, powerful. Yet you have control over it.

If you know you must, if you know it's best, then drop your resistance and get it done. When you are fearful, frustrated, annoyed, apathetic, those are things you can change.

Rather than permitting your resistance to make excuses, engage your chosen, focused efforts to make progress. Give your intentions precedence over your resistance.

Choose not to fight against your own possibilities, capabilities, and ambitions. Let your resistance fall away, and let your own dynamic life take its place.

Don't allow the troubles and imperfections to drag you toward anxiety. Let them fill you with inspiration and positive determination.

Decide to fully live and enjoy each moment as it is. Choose to be thankful, and you'll find much to be thankful for.

Whenever anything goes awry, don't see it as a personal assault. See it instead as an empowering challenge, an opportunity for you to make a difference.

State of the world

By Ralph Marston

When you see things as better than they really are, you're more likely to let up on your efforts. When you perceive things as worse then they are, you're more likely to give up on your efforts.

The situation is rarely as bad as it seems, or as good as it seems. Even more significantly, the situation will change.

Whether you feel on top of the world, or crushed underneath all its pressure, or somewhere in between, your best choice is the same. Keep up your good, effective efforts.

Discouragement in the difficult times and complacency in the good times can rob you of your best possibilities. Decide not to indulge in either one.

Instead, do the very best work you can do, with what you have, in the situation you're in. Let go of your need to continually judge the state of the world, and put your energy into improving it.

Things are as they are, and things will change. Do your part to make those changes as good and beneficial for as many people as possible.

Amid the imperfections

By Ralph Marston

Expect the best, but don't wallow in discouragement when events don't unfold as you expected. Push toward perfection, but don't let yourself be immobilized by imperfect results.

The fact is, difficult, unexpected, disappointing things will happen. Even with the best plans, the most diligent preparation, reality will often fall short of expectations.

When your efforts earn favorable results, let that inspire you to do even more. And when your results don't meet your expectations, let that inspire you just as much.

Being disappointed is useful in the short term, but make sure it doesn't morph into long-term discouragement. As soon as you feel disappointment, use that as a cue to begin a new, positive push forward.

Do all you can do, and then accept the reality of all that happens. Exercise diligent control over the things you can control, and refuse to be frustrated or demoralized by all the rest.

Life is not going to perfectly align with the way you envision it to be, but that's okay. Because you can always do your best, always make things better, and continue to live very well amid all the imperfections.

Challenge and encouragement

When there's someone you wish to empower, here's a proven, effective way to do it. Give challenge, and offer encouragement.

Doing all the work for another person, handling the situation yourself, just creates dependency. That's not in anyone's best interest, but neither is simply walking away without offering any help.

Challenge without encouragement is lazy, cowardly, and can even be cruel. Encouragement without challenge can be naive and ineffective.

Yet when you combine meaningful challenge with genuine encouragement, the results can be spectacular. You will launch the person on the road to continuing, independent success.

Whether it's your employee, child, client, or friend, that's a powerful gift to give. You're not doing the work for them, but neither are you abandoning them.

Give a steady, balanced mix of challenge and encouragement. And give the opportunity for the person to develop their own courage, confidence, and ability to succeed.

Authentically you

Be honest about being you. Pretense is stressful, expensive, difficult to maintain, and offers no real value.

Take a deep, satisfying, genuine breath of fresh air. Feel how good it feels to be at peace with who you are, with how you are, with all you love and care about.

There will always be those who don't accept you, or don't respect you. Let that be their problem, not yours.

Your purpose is not to impress anyone, or to get anyone to like you. Let yourself live and experience each moment in a way that is authentically you.

Go forward, do what you do, unburdened by worries about what others might or might not think. Focus on creating value, on making a difference, in the best way you know how.

Give your love and assistance to others, but don't let the need to please others compromise who you are. Be authentically you, for that's what's in the best interest of everyone.

Before you complain

By Ralph Marston

Before you complain about what someone did wrong, ask yourself this. Do you have a useful suggestion for how to do it better?

At best, criticism for the sake of criticism falls on deaf ears. Worse, it can provoke and escalate a conflict that no one is able to win.

Often it is necessary for you to point out someone else's error. But that doesn't mean you have to be gleeful or disparaging about it.

Your best approach is to be helpful. That's true no matter how much or how little leverage you have in the situation.

Imagine yourself in the other person's position. Based on that, figure out the most helpful way to frame the error and the most positive way to move forward from it.

Don't waste your time and erode your relationships with empty, caustic criticism. Seek instead to be helpful, and to illuminate a positive path forward for everyone involved.

Begin with what is right

By Ralph Marston

Always do the right thing to begin with. It's a whole lot easier and more reliable than having to make it right later.

Tell the whole truth up front, especially when it is a difficult truth. Delaying, obscuring, and avoiding that truth will only make it that much more difficult.

Don't delude yourself into thinking you can cheat life or shortcut the process. Instead, give yourself the benefit of embracing the opportunity to do the right thing.

Avoid the necessity of long, tortured, dubious explanations, and avoid the temptation to cover up the truth. Just put your energy into doing the right thing to begin with.

Spend your time making new progress, not repeating old excuses. Put your effort into looking forward with confidence, and not looking back with worry.

Begin with what is right, what is good, what is useful, helpful, considerate, and honest. And position yourself to go in a truly successful direction.

The best input

By Ralph Marston

The quality of your output is highly dependent on the quality of your input. What quality is the input you are giving to your life?

Vigorous, healthy activity, good nutrition, positive, truthful information sources all lead you toward favorable outcomes. So do beneficial habits, a variety of experiences, uplifting thoughts, and enthusiastic people.

If the results you desire are not coming out of your efforts, ask yourself this. What can you do to improve what you're putting in?

You can't make a quality product from inferior raw materials. To achieve the best outcome, start with the highest quality input.

Bypass the junk in your food, your facts, your friends, and your activities. Insist on truthful, in-depth information, quality nutrition, challenging work, and positive people in your life.

The quality of the life you live comes from the quality of what you put into it. Every day, every encounter, every choice, take the opportunity to give your life the best input.

Stronger through every weakness

You have your weaknesses, as does every person. Make sure each weakness serves as a challenge to become better, not as an excuse to fail.

Let each weakness prompt you to refine, control, improve your behavior. Don't ever allow any of them to justify negative behavior.

Choose never to see yourself as a victim of your weaknesses or difficulties or your unique situation. Though the burden is very real, it does not have to define you or compromise your integrity.

Some weaknesses you can work your way out of, and some you cannot. Yet what you can always do is build within yourself enough strength to more than offset each weakness.

No one is perfect, circumstances are rarely ideal, and difficulties always appear. Even so, with all the imperfections, there are plenty of good, valuable, beautiful things you can do.

Identify your weaknesses, work on them, but don't let them make you any less than the best you can be. Choose instead to rise to their challenge, and to grow stronger through every weakness.

Go with what works. Continue it, support it, double down on it, expand on it.

Move away, as quickly as possible, from what doesn't work. And fill the time, fill the space, use the energy for what does work.

Yes, it is as simple as that. It's not easy to admit to yourself, or to put into practice, yet it is simple and straightforward.

Because at some level you know. You know what pushes you in a positive, creative, fulfilling direction, and what pushes all that goodness away.

Make the choice to go with what works best for your life, and for the lives around you, and for the world. Though that choice can initially be difficult and painful, you know that ultimately it is your best choice.

Refuse to live at anything less than your highest level. Remind yourself, again and again, to go with what works.

Spend an hour making the effort, and create value and satisfaction that endure far into the future. Build on that value with even more effort, and the possibilities are truly limitless.

Bitterness is a choice. And you never have to choose it.

Plenty of people, situations, twists of fate could understandably make you bitter. Yet nothing has to make you bitter unless you choose to be bitter.

Whether it lasts for a week or for a lifetime, bitterness adds no value to your life. Even when you have a good reason to be bitter, bitterness is never a good choice.

By a long shot, the person who is hurt most by your bitterness is you. Instead of choosing bitterness, choose to quickly get past it.

Decide not to punish yourself one moment longer for what's already been said and done. Decide to get on with life, and to get positive about it.

Leave the transgressions of your past, in your past. You have too much to live for, too much good to do, to let even the smallest bitterness hold you back.

Let your spirit soar

Your spirit yearns to soar. Find a way, often, to let it do so.

Make all your effort and trouble worth all the effort and trouble. Fall deeply in love with being alive, in a fresh new way, again and again.

Step away from the silly desire to be impressed with yourself. Simply allow yourself to be yourself, to experience the wonder, the magic, the miracle, of existence.

Take time to be so fully alive that you lose all thoughts of yourself. Open yourself to see, to hear, to feel the moment for what it is, which is everything.

Give your spirit space to roam, to explore, to enjoy, to play. Know how good, and right, and empowering it feels too simply be.

Inject some new, living energy into your life. Make the time, provide the opportunity, to let your spirit soar.

Thoughts into action

Thoughts are important, but they're not everything. For your thoughts to have value, you must put them to work.

By all means, think through what you intend to do, but don't let your thinking become the final objective. Put your well-developed thoughts into action.

There is a point beyond which your thoughts cannot be improved by more thinking. Indeed, if your thoughts are never challenged they will just grow weak and irrelevant.

Get out of your head and into the real world. Take all those thoughts you've been thinking and do something practical and useful with them.

There's no limit to what you can think, and that's very powerful. Yet it can also be dangerous, and lead you far away from reality.

Focus and refine the power of your thoughts by regularly applying them in the real world. Think about what you do, act on what you think, allowing your thoughts and actions to draw great benefit from each other.

Not about you

By Ralph Marston

Much of what feels like frustration is just your ego being wounded. Tamp down your ego, and the frustration goes away.

A great deal of the anger that immobilizes you is just your ego asserting itself. Let go of your ego's directives, and free yourself from the grip of anger.

Whenever anything gets you down, or fills you with doubt, with hesitation, is it really you who is dejected and hesitant? Or is it your ego's inflated sense of self?

There are times and circumstances when your ego can offer valuable perspective. But it's never a good idea to let your ego control your every move.

How do you step away from the destructiveness of your ego? Simply remind yourself, whatever you're doing, wherever you are, that it's not about you.

Rise above the debilitating effects of envy, anger, frustration, apprehension, humiliation, and more. Empower yourself by reminding yourself, it's not about you.

New season

A child wishes summer would last forever. But if summer actually did last forever, it would very soon grow painfully boring and tedious.

One season ends, and makes room for a fresh new season, full of energy and possibilities. One door closes, another opens, one opportunity disappears, and another is just over the horizon.

Summer comes to an end, as does every good season. And all those impending deadlines prompt you, motivate you, beg you to make the most of right now.

The bananas on your kitchen counter are there to be eaten, now, before they turn brown and mushy. The hours in this day are here to be lived, to be filled, before they turn into hazy regrets.

Life is defined by change, sustained and energized by change, inseparable from the changes. Embrace this moment now, when you can, and then embrace the next one as it arrives.

This season won't last forever. Yet the values you live, the love you give and plant firmly in your heart, will survive all the passing days.

If you should happen to lose your momentum, don't give up on it. Do what's necessary to get it back.

When the flow of your effort is unexpectedly interrupted, don't make that an excuse to stop. Instead, let it prompt you to quickly recommit to the effort.

You've put in a lot of work getting to this point. Make all that work count for something by continuing on with it.

It's natural to be dismayed about losing your momentum. So let your dismay inspire you to reclaim that momentum.

You were knocked off track, but that's no reason to wander around in the wilderness. Put all your focus on getting back to what you were doing, getting back in the flow.

Your forward momentum is worth the work you put into creating it, and worth getting back if you lose it. Reclaim your momentum, and make it stronger than ever before.

You're not likely to find a simple, brilliant answer that will instantly make everything better. But that's okay, because you have persistence.

Step after difficult, imperfect step, you can make progress, with persistence. You can learn, you can adjust, you can improve, and you can steadily push your way through each task.

There's nothing you can do to stop the passage of time. What you can do, however, is harness the power in every moment of time, with persistent effort.

With persistence, you can do the work that others consider to be beneath them. And by so doing, you will rise far above your present circumstances.

There is no magic bullet at your disposal. Yet you do have the living magic of persistence.

There's nothing stopping you from putting persistence to work right now. Keep going, keep going, keep going, and you will get yourself wherever you want to be.

Opportunity of today

There are things you meant to do, wanted to do, thought about doing, but never did. And it's likely your biggest regrets are for those opportunities never pursued.

Yet in a strange and wonderful way, now you can also be thankful for what you never did. Because you freed up time, space, and energy to become who you are.

Even with the missed opportunities, even with the regrets, you have arrived at today. And today, you can take every past achievement, disappointment, good moment, and difficult stretch, and put it all to positive use.

The energy, the drive, the inspiration you now have, is yours to use as you see fit. Whatever you are now feeling, you can apply it toward moving forward.

Sadness, regret, gratitude, nostalgia, satisfaction, disappointment, all can be stirred into the mix. Combine their energy with a new sense of purpose and commitment, and do precisely what you choose to do.

Though the past opportunities are gone, their absence has presented you with the opportunity of today. Now you know better, and today is an opportunity you surely do not want to miss.

One thing

Narrowing your focus down to one thing, is difficult. Because to do so, you must turn your focus away from all other things.

Yet it is also powerful to focus on one thing. What you discover, understand, achieve, can be nothing short of amazing.

It's great to be ambitious, but if you spread your ambition too thin, you destroy its effectiveness. If you seek to have it all, to do it all, to experience it all, you make it impossible for anything to have any meaning.

No particular possession or experience, nor all of them for that matter, will provide the fulfillment you desire. It is your pursuit, your effort, your struggle, your investment of yourself in a specific purpose, that brings fulfillment.

You can pose for the selfie, buy the t-shirt, say you did it, and move quickly to the next item on your long, meaningless list. Or you can slow down, give time, thought, meaning and long focus to what you're doing, and come away with real richness.

Give immense value to each possibility you pursue by letting go of the other possibilities for a while. Really focus, and make it truly special.

Love without hate

Hatred gives power, attention, influence to whatever you hate. Is that really what you want?

If your love for one thing is conditioned by your hatred for something else, is it really love? Or is it just a path to continuous misery and destruction?

Life will always involve conflict and adversity, yet you have the power to rise above it all. You have the power to love without condition.

You can refuse to let your energy be consumed by fear and rage. You can choose to invest all you are, all you have, in the positive possibilities.

That does not mean you must live in a state of ignorance or denial. You can see and acknowledge the difficulties, the imperfections, the injustice and absurdity, without compromising your love for life and for all who live it.

The way to move beyond the conflict is not to give more fuel to it. Summon your courage and strength to love without hate, and forge a positive path forward.

Dreams cannot die

Fulfilling your dream is good, and arriving at your goal is important. But a successful result is not necessary for the dream, for the goal, to have value.

The beauty of purpose arises in the living of that purpose. And the achievement that occurs along the way is icing on the cake.

That's not to say achievement is a trivial thing, for achievement is essential if life is to continue. Yet even more essential is the hope for achievement, the desire to achieve.

Dreams cannot die after they've already been lived, no matter what the final result may be. You exist at your highest level when you live in the service of a worthy objective.

Even when you end up falling short of the goal, the goal has added value to your life. That value begins to be realized the instant you commit your actions to the goal.

Do all you can to achieve the results you desire. Feel the richness as it accrues in your life, every step of the way.

Working to improve

Take pride in the good work you've done. But rather than repeatedly congratulating yourself, challenge yourself to do even better.

Consider your latest achievement to be a stepping stone rather than the ultimate destination. Look for new and helpful ways to put it to further use.

Be thankful for the skills you've built and the knowledge you've accumulated. Demonstrate that gratitude by constantly seeking to improve your skills and add to your knowledge.

If you see yourself as the best at anything, that severely limits your ability to get better. Instead, adopt the perspective of a humble student, always learning from others, always working to improve.

If you consider yourself to already know it all, you shut down the possibility of learning more. Choose instead to find something new you can learn from every person you encounter.

Life still has much to teach you. So always be ready and willing to learn.

Opportunity of the unknown

What can you embrace about each difficulty you encounter? What can you make use of in the challenges that appear in your life?

Unpleasant, undesirable things will happen, many times beyond your ability to expect, prevent, or avoid. Yet you always have the ability to respond in a positive way.

Indeed, difficulties will often push you to become stronger, more capable, more highly experienced and effective. Difficulties will force abilities to the surface that you never before realized you had.

You won't do yourself much good by fearing circumstances beyond your control. Instead, welcome the opportunity of the unknown, even when it encompasses challenge and difficulty.

Look for some aspect of each situation that you can put to positive use. Find a path to follow that brings you out of the situation ahead of where you were when you encountered it.

You can be much stronger, much more capable than you've yet discovered. Seek opportunity in the unknown, and give your best qualities a way to emerge.

The path to possible

Imagine the impossible, and suddenly it moves closer to being possible. Imagine the impossible, and give yourself the chance to fully explore what you imagine.

Often when something is considered impossible, it's the method that's deemed impossible, not the result. And quite often, there's another, completely workable method that no one has thought of yet.

That's why so very many things that were once dismissed as impossible are now commonplace. For each one, someone figured out a way to make it happen.

Imagine something impossible, and think of exactly what its benefit would be, if it were in fact possible. Then ask yourself, is there another way to produce that same benefit?

The path to possible begins with the acknowledgment that there's more than just one path. Imagine the impossible, but don't let your imagination get stuck on just one version of it.

Maybe your impossible dream is not as impossible as you think. Immerse your thoughts in the meaningful goodness it can bring, and you're much more likely to find your way there.

Gift of discipline

Discipline is good for you. Reward yourself with some.

Discipline demonstrates to you how much you're capable of accomplishing. Practice discipline, and it strengthens itself along with all your other skills.

You cannot choose whether or not to be disciplined. You can only choose whether that discipline will be imposed by you, or by some force outside your control.

Life improves dramatically when the discipline you are subject to is the discipline you choose. That choice transforms discipline from punishment to empowerment.

Every action, or neglect of action, has consequences. Discipline guides you to perform the actions that produce the most desirable consequences.

If you're disappointed with your results, find a way to add more discipline to your efforts. Give yourself the powerful gift of discipline, and give your world the benefit of all the great things you can achieve.

Intentional choices

Every good aspect of your life has value because you have time to experience it, enjoy it, make use of it. But is that precious, irreplaceable time being contaminated?

If you don't make the specific, intentional choice of how to spend your time, it will be filled in ways that do not serve you well. You'll leave yourself open to countless sources of interruption, distraction, anxiety, angst, and frustration.

You live in a physical structure that protects you from cold, rain, wind, and unwanted intruders. Your time would benefit from a similarly protective structure.

It's a structure you can impose upon yourself by choosing to do so. Simply decide, in advance, how you're going to spend your time, and then stick with that decision.

Give yourself a solid, compelling alternative to the frivolous, meaningless nonsense. And you won't be tempted to waste one moment of your rich and beautiful life.

Within your time, build a special, powerful space to live, to love, to learn and experience and achieve. Fill your time with intentional choices, and fill your life with goodness, meaning, and substance.

Cast away your doubts. You can do this.

Let go of the excuses, the hesitation, the second guessing. Put yourself out there and get the job done.

You won't get it all to go perfectly and you won't get it all done in an instant. Yet you have what it takes to deal with every challenge and to persevere until the work is done.

When you're tempted to abandon the effort, that's when you can make the biggest difference by pushing forward. If the doubts rise back up, remind yourself how far you've come and know with utmost confidence that you can keep going.

People everywhere are eager for genuine human connection. Give it generously, without condition, or expectation, or hidden agenda.

Do you seek to help the world? Then help the person right next to you by connecting, interacting, caring.

Sure, you have to be careful, a bit wary, with a healthy measure of skepticism. Yet you can be all those things and still be genuine, kind, courteous and friendly.

Yes, there are some people out to hustle you, take advantage of you, or worse. Mostly, though, the people you encounter simply want to live their lives, solve their problems, and follow their dreams.

Next time, you can remember what went right and what went wrong. And you can be prepared to more effectively deal with both.

Next time, you can recall the successes you had and the mistakes you made. You'll have the opportunity to avoid those mistakes and expand on the successes.

Next time, you'll have the valuable benefit of experience. Next time you'll have greater familiarity, more confidence, much less doubt and hesitation.

Next time you'll do better, and the time after that, even better. Experience quickly adds up, and quickly adds value, power, effectiveness.

First minute

The way to get ahead is to work ahead. Rather than waiting until the last minute, begin your effort at the first possible minute.

Do what must be done long before it must be done. That frees your time and inspires you to do even more.

Create a virtuous cycle in which achievement begets more achievement. Jump quickly into action and let each small result inspire you to continue.

Work ahead, far past what you must do, and into the rich, rewarding realm of what you really want to do. Take pleasure even in the unpleasant tasks, knowing you'll soon be free to do what you love to do.

Begin immediately, work ahead, and give yourself a whole lot of great options. Instead of wishing you had more choices, you can be acting on the best choices.

It all begins when you begin, when you summon the discipline that's within you, and do the work long before it must be done. Get going at the first minute, and soon you'll be far ahead.

Mutual understanding

Your opinion is not worth much if you don't clearly understand and respect opposing opinions. Progress is made by understanding, not by shouting, arguing, vilifying.

If the other side is being unreasonable, that's no reason for you to be even more aggressively unreasonable. Instead, be aggressive in your efforts to create understanding.

Someone has to introduce understanding into the mix, then guide that understanding to cooperation and progress. Otherwise, nothing good will come of it.

Even the winner of an argument doesn't really win if the disagreement remains unchanged. There's no point in proving a point if it fails to result in agreement.

Mutual understanding is difficult. Yet with work, patience, genuine care, it is almost always possible.

By far, for everyone concerned, the best way forward is mutual understanding. Let go of your desire to win the argument, and seek instead the much bigger win of mutual understanding.

You have made significant progress. And you can make even more.

Sure, you've made mistakes, and you've learned from them. Yes, you've lived through difficulties and disappointments, and grown stronger, more resilient.

Now you've arrived at a time and place where you can put all your strength and experience to good use. Now you are greeted with multiple possibilities for making life even better.

Pause for a moment and consider all that you can be thankful for. Then remind yourself that the most powerful form of gratitude is to make full use of the good things you have.

Life has been good in many ways, and still can be good, and is good. Now, make the commitment, do the work, to make it even better.

Live the adventure

Great adventures never happen in times and places where everything is perfect. The very essence of adventure is in dealing with confusing, imperfect conditions.

Let the adventure unfold in all its imperfection and let it draw out the best in you. After all, that's what adventures are for.

Expect to confront ignorance, irresponsibility, hostility, and apathy. See each such encounter not as a personal insult but as an invigorating, empowering challenge.

Insert yourself willingly into the gap between the flawed way things are and the better way you know they can be. Live the adventure by working tirelessly to bridge that divide.

Make sense of the nonsensical, push forward on the twisting, uneven path. Watch as the adventure grows, along with your strength, your effectiveness, your level of achievement.

No setback, no inconsiderate person, no interruption or frustration can stop you. For you have chosen to transform it all into a positive, rewarding adventure.

Live the miracle

When you're not engaged in climbing higher, it's all too easy to slide into negativity. When you're not clear on what you intend to do, you won't do anything of much use.

You have so many capabilities and opportunities, it's nothing short of miraculous. Live the miracle.

Feel the wonder of being, as you come fully alive in the service of a useful purpose. Know the joy, the satisfaction, the power of living this day on your own highest terms.

Allow yourself to be powerfully pushed in a positive direction by your natural desire to make a difference. Marvel at the abundance that surrounds you, as you transform it into value and fulfillment.
