If I see chocolate I will no doubt have some. But just yesterday I read on one of the Team Walls something that said (more or less) You should eat what you want to look like and not eat what you look like. That has had a huge impact on me today. Many thanks to whoever wrote that !!

When I receive sweets I TRY to regulate my intake. This is a way of life not a life sentence. Normal life has always included sweets and most of the time I can control my intake. When I'm tired, frustrated or stressed I tend to overindulge. But hey ho I'm human. Normally all things in moderation.

Not only does my brain have issues trying to learn the pathways of Spark, but is has NEVER understood the meaning of moderation. If it's in the house and where I can see it, I end up eating it. I can walk past it at the store. Not a problem! But if candy comes into the house I make sure it's put into the cabinet above the frig. I can neither reach nor see into it. Out of sight and all that.
I bought my youngest a Birthday cupCake last January and I'll be doing it again the 24th. Otherwise.... emoticon when everyone leaves the table, what's left...It's mine.

If it is dark chocolate, use in moderation and sanity.

If it is milk or white chocolate, don't get any.

If it is Oreo's, try to avoid at all costs!

Leaving it in the store. As it "calls me out of the kitchen cabinet". And when I eat one bite, my mind bothers me so long, that I eat the other bites too, to keep the chocolate back reunited.

Impulse shopping can be the most difficult for me. I hate those checkout counter candy displays. I have to really grit my teeth and make myself not look at it. My mouth actually waters at times. LOL, thankfully, that's a small time period and I can keep my resolve for that long. I avoid the candy/baked goods etc aisles like the plague. In fact, I rarely go into the "inner aisles" at the grocery store at all, the only exceptions are for things like toilet paper, bags and salad dressing. All the good stuff is on the perimeter of the store.

Most people I know, know better than to give me candy or baked goods for any reason. I did recieve a box of chocolates once as a gift.... from a secret Santa gift from a water aerobics group!!! I was really knocked off my feet by that one. I couldn't believe it. All the other gifts were non-food related, but I got chocolate. I gave it away to another member who said they wanted it when I asked, otherwise it was going in the garbage. I changed clubs to go to a different water aerobics class after that. LOL

I do not like dark chocolate. If it's a covering I can deal, but not solid. I eat chocolate every now in then. It's not a must. Sometimes I'll buy Hershey's miniatures and eat one a night. If I get it as a gift, I will eat in moderation.

Now other sweets, cakes and cookies, can be my down fall.

If foods like chocolates and candy are not in your diet how do you handle gifts, impulse shopping, etc. What do you do when these foods are close at hand?

Chocolate is unfortunately always in my diet in moderation of course. I don't have a huge amount in my house most of the time so it is not usually a problem. When I do have it I try for the caramel chocolate nips, I have to suck them so it takes work to get at the goodness of chocolate.

If it is gifted, it depends on the kind I am given. A lot of the times it is something that I do not enjoy all that much so the hubby will eat it. If it is something that I enjoy then I will try (not always successful of course) to limit to 1-2 pieces a day. Or, I have the hubby take them to work.

While I don't deprive myself of my favorite foods, I generally don't buy them or keep them in the house. If I'm away from home, I have a reasonable amount to satisfy my craving. On special occasions, such as holidays, when prepared at home, I'll attempt to give it away. If not I'll eat it all, and regret it.

If foods like chocolates and candy are not in your diet how do you handle gifts, impulse shopping, etc. What do you do when these foods are close at hand?

Gifts, I keep a few and donate the rest to the food bank.

Impulse shopping, I try to resist, so far so good.

When these foods are close at hand, I have two at the most and try for only sampling once a week and not taking any as much as possible - go for weeks with none, occasionally try once a week and two at the most.

My attitude has changed greatly since I started uncovering the foods that make me ache. I cant eat grains and I can only only eat a tiny bit of sugar at a time. It is amazing how strong my resolve is when I know if I eat it I will be laying awake all night aching. DH gets all the treats to himself.

When I was working for a charter airline in the office we would get tons of dark chocolate. We would bring military home, and the airport where the base was was right next to the Lint plant. They would donate chocolate for the soldiers, but it was 70% and most of them just left it. We would get boxes of them in the office. Only a few of us in the office liked it, so I always had chocolate. When I left that job I had over 2 pounds of chocolate that I took home and slowly ate. I love chocolate, but I try and limit it. I have decent self control, so it's not that big of a problem.

My youngest son has bought me a box of See's chocolates for the last 25 years, it has become a Christmas tradition. I use to eat it within a week. I now put it in the freezer and eat it throughout the year. I use it to treat myself on special occasions. I just ate my last piece from last year's box this weekend. I am now ready for this year's box!

I re-gift all other delights, except the fruit baskets. The guards in my building love me because they get sweet treats weekly. Here in the Philippines I am receiving food gifts almost daily, it is a custom to give gifts to business partners.

It's easy for me to not eat most candies, sometimes even have to throw them out. Chocolate I love, but when I plan it into my daily range it's easy for me to stick to it. Salty/Crunchies on the other hand......

I have serious control issues from CSA events in my childhood, and problems with eating due to my parents' insanely strict food rules.

Not having "treats" in the house doesn't work, because I MUST have the option to refuse to indulge...
I NEED to have the control.

Chocolate candy Is fairly easy for me to limit, and even skip, as I've developed ways to cope with those issues in general. In fact, I can have my worst trigger foods in the house and, 99% of the time, maintain my food plan. It's even getting easier...

THANKS TO SPARKPEOPLE!!!

I have dark chocolate around all the time but eat no more than 12-18 grams at a time. I rarely receive chocolates as a gift now that I'm retired. If I do receive any it might be a small box in my Santa bag and I'll consume them slowly if I can have some and keep within my calorie range for the day. It took me at least 1-2 weeks to consume a small Lindt chocolate bunny at Easter so I know I can do it.

I use to buy a candy bar several times a week when in a checkout line. When I decided a few months ago to embark once again on a healthier lifestyle I made the decision to cut out chocolate and candy. It's too much of a temptation to try to eat only a little. Now that it has been out of my system for a while I am not tempted by displays in stores and the few people I exchange gifts with all know my preferences.

I did treat myself to a bag of Starbucks Peppermint Mocha ground coffee and enjoy a cup a few times a week after dinner. I like it because it is naturally flavored, and I just use one Splenda and some skim milk when I make a cup keeping the calories well in check.

I guess I am fortunate. I can have it in the house and stay out of it. I buy myself a bar of good dark chocolate, hide it in my dresser drawer and only eat a small square off of it every few days. I've had a bar last for a month before. If it was a box of chocolates and I had it sitting on the coffee table, I'm not sure if I could resist. If I hide it away, even though I know it's there, it doesn't bother me.

So I sometimes, have my husband bring them to work, share with friends, last resort, if it's a favorite... I limit myself to a certain amount each day... if that.

My plan is very strict, I can eat very dark chocolate but literally 85% or higher and just a small square occasionally. I will give candy as a gift but prefer to give no edible gifts. I honestly just stopped eating it. I said no and now saw no all the time without hesitation now.

If I am given candy, I will give it away. Everyone at work knows that I can't eat sugar now so I will be surprised if I see anything edible and if I do I will gratefully thank them, but will let them know that my husband or someone else will enjoy it because I can't.

I ended up giving away several fundraiser items because I ordered them before my program and they showed up just after I started it, so all that popcorn & candy went to others instead of me.

Back in the day before retirement I too would share the "wealth" ! Same with left over Halloween candy- bring it to work and share!

Now, if I don't really love it, I plead guilty to throwing it in the trash. But if I looove it (gummie bears anyone) I pretend I'm saving it for the grandchildren! Of course I eventually cave and the rest is history!

We always have some around so it is not very tempting.I find it easier to include all foods in any diet so I don't feel deprived and over indulge .

Yes I want to eat them, but this year I will try something different. If I get chocolate gifts this year I am giving them to the food bank or will re-gift ASAP (don`t tell anyone).

This Fall I bought Girl Guide cookies and gave them to the food bank.

When the foods are close at hand, I am able to ignore them. In Dr. Judith Beck's words, "Not my food."

When such foods are gifted, I either re-gift them or they go to the trash. Yes. I'm ruthless. It's what it takes for me.

My husband has to have a bit of chocolate every day so we have it in the cupboards. I will occasionally have a taste but it doesn't tempt me. In fact, he bought me a chocolate bar earlier this summer when he was feeling guilty for buying himself a treat - I have it in my desk drawer and have only taken one small bite. For some reason, sweets just don't tempt me - I'm lucky.

If foods like chocolates and candy are not in your diet how do you handle gifts, impulse shopping, etc. What do you do when these foods are close at hand?
