Verminophobia - Fear of germs

Germophobia is a term used to describe a pathological fear of germs, bacteria, uncleanliness, contamination, and infection. Germophobia, also known as mysophobia, verminophobia, and bacillophobia, is most commonly associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) but can present in a wide variety of people. Individuals with germophobia may feel compelled to excessively wash their hands and to take other precautions against contamination.

It isn't what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.

Domatophobia - Fear of houses

Most people feel secure when inside a house because it gives a feeling of safety and coziness, that is why a lot of people yearn to be at home after a tiring day at work or after traveling. But there are people who for some reason fear houses and this abnormal dread of houses is termed domatophobia. For a domatophobe, houses appear as repressive or unsafe. Another reason for this anxiety is due to claustrophobia or fear of enclosed places, or one might fear that a house is haunted.

It isn't what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.

Pteridophobia - Fear of ferns

Sigmund Freud reportedly suffered from pteridophobia, a morbid fear of ferns.
This is a subset of a more extensive fear of all plants, known as botanophobia.

Botanophobia is not to be mistaken with Boitanophobia which is the understandable fear of being forced to watch competitive male figure skating. Sufferers of botanophobia can only find respite in the desert or the artic, at least until living space is available on the moon.

Interesting. Being overweight I always feel like I'm being judged. I defuse my insecurities by making fun of myself (weight jokes, etc) before I'm ridiculed by others.

Catagelophobia - Fear of being ridiculed

Categelophobia - Fear of being ridiculed or put down by someone. If you believe that you are the only one afflicted by this, then you are grossly wrong. Everyone of us at most times, have this fear at the back of our mind. Since this is experienced by everyone, the stigma associated with a “phobia” is not prevalent. All of us are most of the time trying to either please someone or to escape the displeasure of someone. It is just the degree of worry that changes.

The best way to get rid of your fear is to meet it head on. Ask yourself as to WHY do you fear being put down by someone? Is it the very presence of that person, the way he/she talks or behaves or is it just that he finds holes in your work.

The secret to get over your fear lies in you answering these questions to the best of your knowledge - If it is just the physical presence of the person, then see what exactly makes you fearful - Is it the eyes, or a flared/crooked nose, big ears or a bulging forehead. It may be quite possible that the person you fear is very down-to-earth and wondering as to how you behave the way you do with him…. Talk it out. Get it out of your system. If it is your work that the person finds holes in, All you need to do is - At the time of starting out, ask what is expected of you. That way you establish a connection as to what is required by the other person rather than presenting what you believe is required. Once that is clear, send a draft across and seek inputs from the person towards improving your work. Gradually, you will be tuned in to the requirements of the other person and deliver what is exactly required without being fearful of the consequences.

Genuphobia - Fear of knees

The fear of knees, or genuphobia, is relatively rare. Like most phobias, genuphobia varies widely in severity. Some people are afraid only of seeing uncovered knees in person, while others are afraid of bare knees even on film. People with this phobia may be afraid of all knees or only their own. Some people are actually scared of kneeling.

Genuphobia is often, but not always, triggered by a negative experience. If you have experienced a traumatic knee injury, you may be more likely to develop this fear. However, the traumatic experience need not have happened to you personally. Seeing a major knee injury happen to a friend or relative may be enough to trigger the fear. In some cases, genuphobia develops after watching a character's kneecaps get broken in a gangster film.

Samhainophobia - Fear of Halloween

Many people, especially children, are known to be terrified of Halloween. While western countries have made Halloween a fun festival spelling booming business for candy makers and Halloween merchandise sellers; for anxious minded individuals it can be a harrowing time. Come October, people and stores start decorating their yards with skeletons, evil zombies, and other realistically gory stuff. Naturally, for children suffering from Samhainophobia, it is not a happy time. Many refuse to sleep alone or might be unable to express themselves only reacting in the form of tantrums, crying or screaming fits.

Ephebiphobia - Fear of teenagers

Ephebiphobia is the fear of youth. First coined as the "fear or loathing of teenagers", today the phenomenon is recognized as the "inaccurate, exaggerated and sensational characterization of young people" in a range of settings around the world. Studies of the fear of youth occur in sociology and youth studies.

Chionophobia - Fear of snow

Chionophobia, or intense fear of snow, is a type of phobia categorized as a natural environment phobia. Natural environment phobias include other weather-related phobias like the fear of thunderstorms (astraphobia) and the fear of wind (ancraophobia). According to the American Meteorological Society, natural environment phobias like chionophobia are the second most prevalent phobia subtype.

Tonitrophobia - Fear of thunder

A person with astraphobia will often feel anxious during a thunderstorm even when they understand that the threat to them is minimal. Some symptoms are those accompanied with many phobias, such as trembling, crying, sweating, panicked reactions, the sudden feeling of using the bathroom, nausea, the feeling of dread, insertion of the fingers in the ears, and rapid heartbeat. However, there are some reactions that are unique to astraphobia. For instance, reassurance from other people is usually sought, and symptoms worsen when alone. Many people who have astraphobia will look for extra shelter from the storm. They might hide underneath a bed, under the covers, in a closet, in a basement, or any other space where they feel safer. Efforts are usually made to smother the sound of the thunder; the person may cover their ears or curtain the windows.

It isn't what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.

Mageirocophobia - Fear of cooking

Mageirocophobia, or fear of cooking, can take many forms. Some people are only afraid of cooking for large groups, while others are afraid of whipping up scrambled eggs for themselves. Mageirocophobia is extremely common, although it is only considered a phobia when it is severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Amaxophobia - Fear of riding in a car

Amaxophobia, or the fear of being a passenger, can be virtually crippling. Imagine how life-limiting it would be if you were too afraid to be a passenger in a car, bus, train, or airplane.

Thankfully, many, though not all, people with amaxophobia can drive their own cars. The prospect of allowing someone else to take control of the trip, however, is terrifying. Like many specific phobias, the impact of amaxophobia depends largely on context.

If you live in a self-contained walkable neighborhood like New York City, even a severe case of amaxophobia may not greatly affect your life. Everything you need is nearby or you can order it online.

If you live in a rural area or a sprawling city, where even picking up groceries requires a long car ride, a mild case of amaxophobia may be devastating.

Wiccaphobia - Fear of witches and witchcraft

Wiccaphobia, or fear of witchcraft, was once a societal norm throughout much of Christian Europe and the United States. The period from the 14th century Inquisition through the witch trials of the 17th century was known as the "Burning Times," in which witchcraft was a capital offense tried through the courts.

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia - Fear of Long Words

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is probably taken from the root word sesquipedalian, which means "long word." Therefore, sesquipedalophobia is technically more correct. But somewhere along the line, someone added references to the hippopotamus and monsters to make the word sound even more intimidating. How ironic that the name for the fear of long words is itself 35 letters long.

Arachibutyrophobia - Fear of peanut butter

Arachibutyrophobia is actually not the fear of peanut butter as an object, but the situation of having it stick to the roof of your mouth. It is often rooted in a more generalized phobia of choking (pseudodysphagia) or of sticky textures, but it may also occur alone.

Koumpounophobia - Fear of buttons

Koumpounophobia, or the fear of buttons, is surprisingly common. Yet like any phobia, the specific fear may vary dramatically between sufferers. Some people are afraid of the texture of certain buttons. Others feel that buttons are somehow dirty. Some only fear touching or wearing buttons, while others are scared of viewing buttons worn by strangers or friends.

It isn't what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.

Chronophobia - Fear of Time

Chronophobia is characterized by the fear of the passage of time, usually, because people fear that their time on Earth is limited or have trouble tracking its passing. Even though time isn't fully concrete, some may consider it as a type of "specific phobia," similar to how one would fear a cat or snake.

Scoptophobia - Fear of being stared at

Scoptophobia, also known as scopophobia, is the fear of being stared at. It varies in severity from person to person. Some people are afraid only when a stranger stares for a long period of time, while others fear even passing eye contact with a friend. Scoptophobia is often, though not always, associated with other social phobias. Untreated, the fear may worsen over time.

Barophobia - Fear of gravity

Barophobia is the irrational fear of gravity. Individuals suffering from barophobia can either have the fear that gravity might crush them, the fear of falling because of the gravity involved (distinct from the fear of heights), or even the fear that gravity might cease to exist and they will float away.

Phobophobia - Fear of phobias

The fear of phobias is phobophobia. This anxiety disorder can lead to a self-replicating cycle, ultimately resulting in escalating circular fears. Some people with phobophobia already have one or more existing phobias, while others are afraid that they might develop one. Phobophobia is often, but not always, linked to other anxiety disorders.

Philematophobia - Fear of Kissing

Philemaphobia, or philematophobia, the fear of kissing, is common among young and inexperienced kissers who are afraid of doing something wrong. In these cases, the fear is generally mild to moderate and dissipates quickly as the person gains experience. Sometimes, however, philemaphobia is more severe and can occur at any age.

It has been a long time since I read IT. Haven't watched the remake movies yet. On my list for this year's horrorfest.

Coulrophobia - Fear of clowns

Are you afraid of clowns? Coulrophobia. This has been coined as an informal term for a severe fear of clowns. Officially, it falls into the category of a specific phobia if it is persistent and interferes with normal functioning. Many people experience a discomfort with clowns that isn't a true phobia.

It isn't what we say about our blessings, but how we use them.

Trypophobia or the Fear of Holes

Trypophobia is an aversion or fear of clusters of small holes, bumps, or patterns. When people see this type of cluster, they experience symptoms of disgust or fear. Examples of objects that might trigger a fear response include seeds pods or a close up image of someone's pores.

Automatonophobia - Fear of Human-Like Figures

Automatonophobia can be loosely defined as the fear of wax figures, humanoid robots, audio-animatronics, or other figures designed to represent humans. Only rarely does the fear become a full-blown phobia, but it is relatively common to experience hesitation or nervousness when confronting these figures.

Are you scared of phobias or just plain paranoid? Watch this space for some phobia propaganda. You might find that you have one you didn’t know about. Now are you paranoid?
