The elephant in the room is Emotional Eating...caused by...
DH has a bad day..living with dementia is at times difficult..always challenging

I need to learn to not let his moods affect me so much. I try to go to my shop or do something..but sometimes that just does not work. So am still working on a plan.

Hmmm that is really about it..I have an eating plan...I know I need to exercise and do most days
I just let the stress get ahold my me ..and stuff my mouth with food of any kind..but mostly it needs to be sweet!!

I'm leaving on a cruise to Italy and Greece this week. The biggest downfall I have is to overeat just "because it's there!" The buffets, the meals, the 24-hour availability is just too tempting.

My strategy is to go for long walks around the decks when we are at sea so I can use up some of the calories.

NO excuses, this is the first diet I have ever been on. I am 54 years old & started this diet about 1.5 years ago.

I will explain a little 2 years a go I got blood clots in both lungs that formed scar tissue, I was on oxygen in the hospital for 3 weeks and could not exercise & had extreme pain when walking to my kitchen to prepare food. No exercise or eating properly for 8 months. I gained 30 pounds, I wanted to lose 10 pounds before this. It happened again and now have more clots in both lungs & pain when I do things. I have now lost 40 pounds & now I am down to size 10, same size I was in high school, before this happened I was size 12 & went to size 18 because of it, my health improved & I went back to the gym not knowing in the meantime I got more clots, I see a dr. in 3 months. Only light walking now.
I went from size 10-size 12 a year after high school & stayed that size for 30 years! Never any problems with my weight! I was always doing the right thing with my diet & exercise before this happened.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past:

1-I have Fibromyalgia and I have used "too fatigued", "too depressed", "too much pain"

2-I feel better when I eat.

3-I have too many other things to do that I can't fit in the time.

Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks. Let's learn from our past behaviors and make this our best Challenge ever!

1-My Fibro actually FEELS BETTER when I move and exercise, so MOVE!! Fibro sucks, but it doesn't have to suck me in with it..

2-I don't need to feed myself all of the time, good food or not. I DO need to eat when hungry. Only dogs get treats when they're good. I don't need them!

3-There's always time for ME. I am learning to make time, even if it's 10 minutes at a time. I'm still working on a schedule that works

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

I have learned that excuses are just a waste of time that I could have spent making myself better. I have taken on a "Just Do It" attitude instead of laying on the sofa. Not just with exercise...dishes, laundry, clutter, etc. It works all around!

1. Too busy/tired - I have been working on limiting my daily commitments so I have less stress and more time to do what matters most to me. I use my calendar faithfully and want to schedule no more than 1 activity a day (excluding my time for fitness).

2. "I Don't Care" attitude - When faced with tempting situations I get tired of always fighting the urge to eat/drink. I just want to have fun like everyone else. I let my guard down. I need to keep working the concepts of 100 DWL by Spangler and Cognitive Behavior Solution by Beck until the skills becomes second nature for me.

3. Mood Swings - I have a tendency to get depressed/feel blue at times, anxious, discouraged, etc. I feel mentally exhausted and start thinking I can't succeed. I need to stay consistent in logging into SP and actively participating in my teams especially when I these feelings creep in.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

I know I can do this; that I can succeed and reach my goal if I stick to my plan CONSISTENTLY!

travel - day trips, overnight trips. Take trips into consideration when planning meals and exercise. Make healthier choices with meals.

I'm tired - exercise first thing in the morning.

I don't feel like cooking - prep meals on Sunday so it is easier during the week.

1. I am out to eat, I deserve to eat more.
Answer: I deserve to be healthy, by overeating I will feel very uncomfortable. Then regret it later. I can take. some of the food home to have the next day.

2, I feel bad about myself, I think bad things about myself and those around me.
Answer, go back to rational thinking instead of eating.

3, Everyone else is eating it.
Answer - I am not everyone else. I am my own person.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.
1. I have a huge physical setback like, shoulder dislocation, torn miniscus, replacement hip surgury, torn rotator cuff. Seems like I am going good and then I get hurt and It is a slow painful recovery and It gets my spirit down and I get to negative thinking and give up on it.Seems too hard on top of everything else. I make excuses for my job working too many hours and too tired. I do not handle stress well so I eat horrible or don't eat or drink water, no sleeping and practically run myself into the ground to try and achieve my goals in my job at breakneck speed.
I am the one in control. Try and slow down so as not to get hurt. Track my food and if I get off track , go right back on. Go home at then end of my shift, respect myself first, make choices for me and what I want. Change my thinking to positive, planning and prevention.

Slow and steady wins the race, grant me the patience I need to persevere and make it through.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

1. I think I shot myself in the foot in the past. When I reached a certain point in my weight loss, I would start eating again and as a result have been on a roller-coaster ride for years. 170 seems to have been the "magic number" and that is why I am working so hard right now because I am below it for the first time in a long time and am determined not to "slide back" into oblivion! My Strategy: Make sure I get plenty of sleep and look in the mirror every day and say, " You are nearly there! Don't you give up now!"

I have learned that I CAN do it and I can stop myself from self-destructive behavior like over-eating.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

1. Lack of motivation. I will track all meals and fitness to be able to monitor my progress.
2. Once I get off track, I stay off track for the entire day. Once I fall off track, I will brush myself off and continue my healthy habits for the rest of the day.
3. Boredom. I will find things to keep my mind and hands occupied when I am bored.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you? Tracking is the key to staying accountable and motivated.

3 reasons / excuses on why your lifestyle plans have not been well executed in the past.

1. I go "all or nothing" and will eat great for a few days, then blow it on the weekend with one bad choice after another
2. I try to do too much at once (ex. exercise every day) and burn out in the first few weeks
3. I don't "see" the changes in my body, even if the scale and/or measurements are telling me otherwise

Strategies:

1. Eating - mainly whole foods, but nothing is off limits ... goal is to stay within my calorie range each day
2. Exercise - MWF will be gym days with a mix of some cardio and strength training ... the rest of the week will be for getting outside with the pup and little guy, but no "structured" exercise
3. Weigh - weekly; Measure - monthly; Pictures - monthly so I can really see the changes (and keep up motivation)

3 reasons /excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and excuses) plans have not been well executed in the past

1. I went on a diet in the first place. I did not make lifestyle changes.
2. Eating and exercise habits I could not sustain.
3. My brain did not recognize the slimmer person in the mirror.

strategies:
1. No more diets. Make lifestyle changes.
2. I eat what I want. No food is off limits. I need to learn to work treats into my calorie range.
3. Go slow. Give myself the gift of time so that my brain as well as my body can process these changes and the slimmer person in the mirror.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

1-I have been 'interested' but apparently I have not been 'committed.' Linda Spangler addresses this issue in her '100 Days of Weight Loss' book. I believe it's rue with me. I am journaling and focusing more on ME.
2- Stress. I believe everyone has stress. I tend to let it get to me and then comfort myself by not taking care of myself. Now I am re-establishing my habit of meditation. Big help.
3-I am easily persuaded to eat here or there - just for tonight. Well that might be fine for some people, but I've come to the conclusion that it isn't OK for me. I need to focus on what's best for me, put myself first and take care of myself first.

1. too much at one time - I tend to jump on board MANY projects and challenges at one time and then they all fail. I need to make a plan and stick with it. If I add something I need to give something else up. K.I.S.S. that needs to be my motto

2. not planning ahead - making a day of it. Rather it's Saturday or Sunday afternoons, I need to work on my menu and plan ahead. Prep as much as I can so that there are no excuses when I'm busy.

3. inconsistency - goes along with #1. I join too many things and I'm not consistent. I KNOW what I need to do. I just need to make a plan and stick with it. Maybe have someone truly hold me accountable.

PLAN, PREP AND PLAN!

1-I don't want it bad enough - Refer to my goal board. Keep adding to my goal board. Remember!!!!!!!
2-Not willing to resist in the moment for something I really want later. Again, goal board.
3-I have not planned for healthy eating or exercise. It's always something I wing. I have been using a planner. I will continue to do that. It has worked very well all year.

My main reason for not achieving my goals is just being tired or hungry or both. By evening, if I am tired and hungry, I just do not stick to my plans. I need to get enough sleep and not get too hungry. Eating regularly ,including snacks helps me.
The next biggest reason is when I am no longer in a routine, not controlling my environment, including meals. That happens when we travel and when we have company for a long period of time. I need to have good plans made ahead for these occurrences. And I need to remember my goals and stick to them.
Not getting enough exercise always is a problem for me if I do not start out early on this. So, I plan to have a plan for exercise the day before and I intend to do it early, before everything else gets in the way.Getting enough exercise seems to not only burn calories, but keep my appetite in the normal range or even less than normal range.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

1.Too busy - homeschooling, activities we are involved in, regular household chores that need to get done.

Taking an hour a day while my kids are reading in their rooms to workout. Also trying to get my 250 steps io or more an hour with Fitbit and its reminders

2.No gym-- I used to have a gym membership many years ago.

I have plenty of workout dvd's, games and of course there are online workouts for home also. It's a;; about just getting up and doing it no matter how I feel.

3.Not mindful what I eat.

Need to make better choices and track everything I eat. Even when I go out I need to make healthier choices.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

1. I sit too much.
Strategy: Set a timer to make sure I get up and move some at least once every hour. Get walking in first thing every morning.

2. Husband doesn't like eating healthy.
Strategy: Prepare healthy meals, and if he doesn't want to eat what I fix, he can do something else.

3. Not planning ahead.
Plan meals ahead and stick to plan. Track before eating and change anything that is going to put me over my daily calorie range.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?
The importance of planning and tracking. Also the importance of getting more exercise.
I have learned a few things I have been doing that have interfered with my thyroid medication, and I have made changes there. I do feel better now and seem to have more energy.

1. I have failed in the past due to so much change in my life. I divorced, moved to a new city and have been overwhelmed. I just finished remodeling a Fixer Upper House and can now focus on ME.
2. My neighbor is my best friend in life. He cooks every single night and invites me to dinner. He fries steak, chicken, fish or else he makes loaded baked potatoes. I have to say no thanks to the invitations.
3.. I drink too much. I enjoy my cocktails. Always have always will. I will limit my daily intake of cocktails.
4.. I have been dealing with a knee injury since the beginning of March. I will do chair exercises, core exercises and strength train.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you? That I can an will achieve at this challenge.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

1. Went into maintenance using a strategy of cutting out junk and then my brain quit...started eating whatever I wanted...Blam stopped weighing and measuring and gained nearly all that I lost back within the year.

My GOAL is to stop being so overwhelmed with the new me and stay focused on my Lifestyle Change. Weigh and measure everything and stayaway from junk foods.

2. I was having a great deal of joint pain and there were days I couldn't exercise much. I then began sitting more than moving.

My GOAL is to utilize the chair exercises when walking is too painful and listen to my body. Keep Goals List and before and after pictures in view at all times.

3. I just got plain lazy and looked for the quick meal, instead of meal planning and trying new recipes and eating healthy, I bought ready made meals.

My GOAL is to try a new recipe a couple times a month and fix nonprocessed meals. Also I want to add more fruits and dark leafy veggies to my menus.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

I've learned that I must keep moving. I must weigh and measure my food. I will make weekly menu plans. If the food isn't included in those menus...I will not eat it. I must stay accountable.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past. Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks. Let's learn from our past behaviors and make this our best Challenge ever!

1. I keep getting pregnant.
Solution: Hubby had a vasectomy. emoticon

2. My family makes eating healthy difficult.
Solution: Well, my grandfather who lived with us passed away last November (his viewing was the day we found out we were expecting again) so I no longer need to cater to his tastes. As for my kids, they can suck it up. And my aunt can appreciate that I'm doing the cooking even if she does complain that she's eaten more vegetables in a week now than she has in her whole life. If she doesn't like it, well, at 65 I'm sure you're more than capable to cook for yourself.

3. I'm in pain. emoticon
Solution: Well, some gentle movement will help with that for one. I'm going to take things slow and look into what dietary accommodations I can make to reduce pain and inflammation. Capsaicin and turmeric, right?

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?
I've learned that gradual life changes are more successful than doing it all at once and that it helps to have someone by your side to hold you accountable.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

1. I watch too much TV at night
2. I am a carbaholic
3. I stress eat

I am going to try to reduce time with telly and increase time with hubby. Going to initiate after dinner stroll.

I struggle with my desire for bad carbs (chips, pretzels) daily. I am being successful because I had WLS and do not want to gain back the 192 lbs I lost, but it is a constant struggle.

I am learning to combat stress with exercise, distractions, and calling friens.

1. I am a slow starter in the morning when I need to start my exercise in order to really do it.
My plan is to have a schedule I make up for myself a day ahead, at least, with an exercise plan. That way, I won't be trying to make up my mind for too long about what I am doing. I have a lot of exercises I enjoy and I spend too much time figuring out which one I want to do.
2. I eat in the evening, after dinner, when I am not hungry sometimes.
I plan to plan the snack ahead of time, one that doesn't have too many calories. And if I am not hungry, I plan to not eat anything.
3. I eat too fast and eat too much before I notice. I plan now to be more mindful when eating.

There are so many fun ways to exercise, don't waste time on the other ones. Enjoy healthy, good food and skip the rest.

Three excuses:
1. My work schedule which are long days.
2. Being stressed and then stress eating.
3. My husband brings foods into the house I am trying to avoid.

All of these have changed. My husband has been making a lifestyle change after being sick this summer. I am in a new job and the long hours are a given I have to work with.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

1. I fall off the wagon easily - my strategy for this is to focus more on the goal

2. I am too tempted when junk food is around - my strategy for this is to not have it in the house and stay out of the lunchroom at work

3. I forget to track my food and I dont make time for exercise - my strategy is to plan my exercise - put it in my calendar and send daily reminders to myself to track what I eat

Excuse #1: I am on vacation!
Strategy: Since my husband and I are retired and love to travel, which we do often, I need to get a handle on this one. Our vacation at the end of October for 2 weeks is smack dab in the middle of the challenge. Since we will be staying at a timeshare, we will be preparing many of our own meals. I think with a little planning of menus and coordination with my sister I can handle that. On the out to eat part I will really need to do some preparation and visualization on ordering healthy foods. On drinking to excess, well I need to pick up some seltzer water!

Excuse #2: I’m tired of signing in to Spark People!
Strategy: I hate having to start at day one sign in and spin the wheel. Maybe this will get me to keep signing in even if I just go through the motions. AND I want to finish what I started! Especially because I have started too many times.

Excuse #3: Life shouldn’t be about recording every morsel I eat and every minute of exercise. I’m just gonna enjoy life!
Strategy: Maybe life should be about living healthy and feeling good about myself.

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.
In the past, I would forget and eat something that I had committed not to eat.
In the past, I would make excuses and eat something that I had committed not to eat.
In the past, I would have negative emotions and would turn to food for comfort.
With this 5% Fall Challenge, my hope is to become more honest with myself through the daily and weekly work with the Team. I do want to lose the weight and I need to make the effort to lose the weight.

Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks.
Daily plan and record my food in SparkPeople and keep track of calories.
Daily make healthy food selections based on good physical health and not emotions.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?
I have learned along the way that when I am honest - I must be honest with myself first and not make excuses. Saying "no thanks" when food is offered to me by others is all I need to say. I need not say anything else to stay committed to "the plan".

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

I was on a diet. in my mind, I only changed my behavior to lose

I did not exercise

I did not commit to change

Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks. Let's learn from our past behaviors and make this our best Challenge ever!

This time I am not on a diet but I have made a lifestyle change; one that I can and will maintain to goal and throughout the rest of my life

I committed to exercising at least 30minutes daily and I walk 1-3 miles a day as well

I now know that successful weight loss requires dedication and commitment to the entire program. You need to do it for life, not just to lose.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

I cannot diet. I needed to put together a program that I can do for life. Moderation and portion control are the tools that will get me to goal, through maintenance and beyond.

Being positive is a choice. My Mantra: “Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day." Each morning seek the positive and you will have a good day. Always remember, “Your only competition is YOU.”

I am not talking about the past, but the presence:

1. Right now, both of my knees give me a lot of trouble. Sometimes, I can barely walk. I worked out with my trainer, this morning, also took a walk with my trekking poles, and had a hard time with both. I think, I am ready for Cortisone shots in both knees, again and hope for improvement. It has been 5.5 months since my last ones.
2. When I have had a busy day, I can't convince myself to go for a walk. Well, when I have a busy day, I usually move a lot, anyway.
3. My eating habits have to improve: I always have breakfast, but eat a late lunch. When it gets to be around 3:00 PM, I usually don't eat dinner. I really would like to change back to 3 meals/day, unless you call it 'Intermittent Fasting'. Working on it!

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past.

1. No time to do it consistently: Boss gave me permission to workout at lunchtime during the week - do it then!
2. Can't do it with family: Just do it anyway. Make new "Family" at the gym.
3. Not enough $$: It's $10/mth and free outside. No excuse....

Three reasons/excuses I have not been successful in the past
1. Not logging everything every day.
2. Rewarding myself with food when I've done well and not trying as hard any more.
3. I'm too tired or I can do that tomorrow excuse.

I've learned that logging/journaling what you eat is extremely important for success. It helps also keep you accountable of what your truly ate/drank that day. I know that I am really hard on myself and sometimes that makes me give up, I need to stop the negative talk and I know that this is a down fall I've had in the past.

I let life get in the way
I get tired of always being "good" with eating and once I give in it snowballs
I know what I should do regarding exercise especially but can easily talk myself out of doing the walking etc. because I am busy or achy or just lazy

I need to make the time for me, which is really hard with my life situation but I will try harder
If I really crave something I will be sure there is only one serving available enjoy it and move on
I will make the walking I want to do my priority and make a change to getting to bed earlier and get up in the morning to get it done before the day gets in the way
