I count intentional exercise and use my garmin watch or computer for my bike. Anything else I just think of as my regular daily activity that my body is used to me doing that won’t burn off any extra calories but if I stop doing I may put on an extra pound or two.

I do count my intentional exercise at the gym.
I also count my brisk walk with the dog.
I need to step up my intentional exercise regarding CORE work

Thanks for the refresher. Always a good idea to remember the difference between activity and exercise. I generally know that if I'm sweat, I'm exercising! I do ST 2x/w, Elliptical 3x/w, and Yoga 1x/w.

In between those I do some walking, but it is not always at "exercise" intensity. Yesterday, however, was at that level. I try to walk once a week with a friend and we do a lot of chatting. It is very noticeable that when I talk it is more difficult to breath and so my walk slows down to compensate. Therefore we take turns talking so we can keep our speed and fitness level up!

I have an exercise timer on my Gear 2. I can start it myself for most activities, or it will notice that I was exercising consistently and after 10 minutes will start counting active minutes. I always track these. I also clean a house for a client and, although it is a workout, it's work and I don't track it (unless that IS my workout!).

I have intentional exercise, both cardio and strength training. That being said, my heart rate does not get up. I can run a 5k and am lucky if it gets to 100. So I can not use the elevated heart rate as a guide.

I only count intentional exercises on my routines or my aerobic walking or bicycling. I do track my daily steps though as a motivation and feel good tool. Everyone who knows me says each step I take is like 4 for another person so I do track it and it is burning a lot of calories.

Slow and steady wins the race, grant me the patience I need to persevere and make it through.

I walk Remi every morning and get in a good mile or mile and a half on cooler days.

I am go to the gym 3 times a week minimum. I enjoy sculpting class, Silver Sneakers class and yoga. I will be adding Pilates this week.

On other days, I take additional walks in order to get in all 10,000 steps.

I only use my Garmin tracker "minutes" for my "intentional" exercise. I start the timer when I begin an activity like swimming or dancing or Wii boxing, etc.

Those minutes are tracked separately and only for specific activities.

I do like that Spark has some of the things I do in there so I don't have to rely on my tracker for everything.

I will be walking Daisy every morning - we do 1.5 - 2 miles depending on the weather and whether or not I get up on time.

I am also going up to the gym 2 - 3 times each week to take Yoga, Pilates or Strength classes.

I am trying to fit in the stationary bike and treadmill on the days I don't go to the gym - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't!

my intentional exercise, is walking 30 minutes every morning, usually 2 sparks videos, gym 3 times a week, workouts on sparks challenges (sometimes) yard work, and heavy housecleaning, not daily I don't claim my fitbit activity, think it would be counted twice if I did, not sure how that works

My intentional exercise. I do at least 30 minutes in the morning, a 15 minute walk at break, a 20 minute walk at lunch. I do walk after dinner as well, but I don't always count it as exercise since some days it is more an amble than exercise.

I use every option I can to add up those fitness minutes, and they all don't happen in the gym. Cleaning projects often involve lifting, carrying, etc. I look for ways to add a few minutes here and there as well. My plan for standing at the copier, riding the elevator alone, waiting for the microwave, etc. is "Don't just stand there; move." Those few minutes add up.

Since I rely on my trusty watch to give me fitness minutes,(I know - so old school!) I only count intentional minutes with one exception - if my daily activity is a landscaping project for 4-6 hours I will skip my walk and record an hour or two of gardening or heavy shovelling depending on what the project is. We moved into a new house with 1/2 an acre of nothing and are slowly making gardens, patios and fences so there is plenty of extra heavy yard work.

I make time to "intentionally" exercise 6 of 7 days a week. 30-60 minutes at the gym. Then if I can, I schedule my activities so I can get some exercise (like walking to dinner or a friends house).

I intend to do more strength exercise than I have been doing and cardio that will often be walking, but could include other things. I also feel I need to do some stretching.
When doing some gardening, like digging potatoes, or house cleaning which includes vacuuming, or washing the bathtub, I consider it exercise since those are activities I don't do every day and they take a lot of energy and time.
Washing dishes or cooking, I don't count as exercise.

There are so many fun ways to exercise, don't waste time on the other ones. Enjoy healthy, good food and skip the rest.

My exercise plan does include intentional exercise minutes but I am going to only count 60 minutes for a 75 minute yoga class because of the time the teacher takes at the beginning of class and our time in spent in Savasana, I also plan to separate walk time from total activity time as recorded by my Fitbit.

It might surprise you to know that playing Wii, playing an instrument, painting, heavy cleaning, playing with the kids, darts, acting, officiating at a sporting event are included! Look for things you may already be doing that you are not including in your exercise.

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon Tracking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.

Does your exercise plan include 'intentional exercise'?

Get out and have fun today! emoticon emoticon emoticon
