1 - Eating to suppress emotions
2 - Thinking I can lose weight without exercising
3 - Doing it alone

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?
1- I still struggle with this but I am working on the walk it off method of going for a 10 minute "time out" walk
2 - Learning that it is better to exercise because you love your body
3 - Sparkpeople is great but the Fall 5% challenge pushed me being part of a team

1.Not cooking at home- Its just my husband and I-so sometimes it just seems easier to eat out. But then I eat unhealthy- I need to make eating at home a priority and make good home cooked healthy meals

2. Not making me and getting healthy a priority- I often do whats easier, sometimes what other want. I sit and watch tv, instead of exercising, I play on facebook instead of logging my food, I eat out instead of preparing healthy meals because I dont want to go grocery shopping. There are so many things I do instead of making my healthy a priority- I have plenty of time for my healthy, to make healthy meals, to meal prep, to exercise, etc, so theres no excuse, I just need to make it a priority in my life!

3. Emotional Eating- I emotional eat alot- whether its because Im lonely. bored, stressed, upset, etc. I need to find ways to deal with my emotions other than food. I eat alot of unhealthy foods when Im stressed- instead of eating, I can blog. read, take a walk, listen to music, talk to a friend, log onto SP, etc. Theres so much I can do other than feeding my emotions

1) Boredom. I find myself doing something I don't enjoy, or having to be somewhere I don't want to be, so reach for something to "snack" on. Must learn to keep something besides snacks handy for such situations.

2) Just too busy, don't have time to exercise. All exercise doesn't have to be done at one time. I can do stretches or lift weights while on the phone. I can put things on high or low shelves so I have to reach or squat to get them.

3) Just one won't hurt, but it usually leads to more than one. Just gotta learn to say no.

1. My biggest excuse over the last few months has been a lack of time. As a student teacher, I almost completely stopped working out because I just didn't have the time. It will be very easy to fall back into that mindset as I begin subbing in the next few weeks. MY STRATEGY: My exercise plan involves doing only my 15-minute strength training workout and a 10-minute walk. I can get up 15 minutes earlier and do the strength workout before my shower in the mornings. At night I can do a 10-minute walk around my apartment complex (to check the mail for example) or around my apartment while I cook.

2. My biggest excuse about diet the past few months has been A) that I continue to buy sweets and then say "well I have to eat them now to get them out of the house" and B) saying "well my boyfriend wants some candy so I will get some candy" MY STRATEGY: First off in the next 8 weeks I will NOT buy anything sweet at the store. Second off my boyfriend will be on board with this plan and know that suggesting something sweet is a big no, no. However, if he does mention something sweet I will remind him that we aren't keeping sweet things in the apartment. because if they are here I will eat them.

3. I am way too tired to follow through with my workout. MY STRATEGY: This is the harder one. It's true that I am tired, especially at night. My boyfriend laughs at me because all bets are off around 7 pm when I become too tired to do much of anything. My strategy to ensure that I get at least 20 minutes of exercise in will be that I get my 15-minute strength workout in the morning before work (now I will ensure this happens by making it a strict part of my morning routine). That leaves only 5 more active minutes. This I can do during lunch by taking a 5-minute walk around the school (inside or out). The goal is 10 minutes though, so if I can get 5 in at school that leaves 5 more at home which I can do before I let myself get in PJs.

1. Seasonal Affective Disorder
*****Starting my day with prayer & meditation calms my soul to approach the darkness, reducing stress/anxiety, reducing stress eating or craving of sugar. Use more/brighter lights at home & office.

2. Winter Weather
*****When I am over-focusing on weather, engage in an alternative activity such as reading or phoning a friend, color, strength training move or clean to distract me. Reduce stress, eliminate using food as a crutch.

3. Work Stress
*****Getting caught in negative talk or gossip at work or with friends results in me not liking me. It's not who I am normally. My assistant & I are instituting a positive word of the week st the office, that I hope will spill into my life. We are posting a positive word & have asked everyone to use it with our team members at least once in the week. For example, week 1 word is exceptional. Use it with each member of the team, even the ones who are a challenge to us individually (that's 2 for me).

3 reasons my diets/exercise have not worked in the past:

1. I was on a strict diet. That word somehow makes me feel like Iím punished.
2. Aches and pains kept me from being active for more than 5 min.
3. Did not really take the time to focus on me.

Some things I have learned along the way: This is a lifestyle I can live with!
I can lose weight by eating the food I love, as long as I plan and measure my portions.
A good chiropractor is golden to help with bad knees since itís often because of an issue in your lower back! Getting sport- massages really helps as well.
Having a goal to lose 80 lbs is massive, I cut it down to 5% increments and thatís the next goal Iím focusing on.
I started with 5 min walks and now I can do 45.
My goals are realistic and I plan every week. Both food and exercise.
I do need to incorporate strength, and started this week.

Three reasons/excuses:

1. Life's stressors get in my way. My strategy is to create a healthy meal plan for each meal and stick to it period. As for exercise, have my set days for going to the gym and for my exercise at home. I work hard to honor those plans just as I would if I made plans with someone else.

2. I push too hard at first and then burn out quickly. My strategy with both meals & exercise is to honor moderation. Plan easy meals and do the prep work early in the day. As for exercise, although my mind says "you can do it"; I need to be sensible about how much my body can actually take. I also need to do a better job of active recovery.

3. Other people's needs take priority over mine. This is especially true with my DH who would prefer not to try new healthier foods, but I also have a daughter with a new baby who is needing more help than I'd anticipated. My strategy is to actually BELIEVE that my needs are also important. I may have to serve two different vegetables (I like broccoli, he likes corn) or I may need to spend some time at my daughter's but do my exercising before I go.

This whole process is such a journey. I have made so many changes over the past 3 years but each day is an opportunity to make one more!

3 reasons my diets/exercise have not worked in the past:

1. I tend to not be consistent
2. I start out strong and then find myself just not doing it any more.
3. I lack water and meal planning.

Some things I have learned along the way, I've learned what does work for me and what does not, that consistency is definitely needed for me to be successful. I've learned my spark community is amazing and I should utilize the team work that they offer.

1. Depression/Seasonal Affective Disorder - Go earlier in the morning, it gets harder as the day progresses
2. Weather - Treat myself to warm workout clothing, enjoy the endurance factor
3. Driving distance to a gym - Work out outside, and walk to the Community Center when in the south

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you? Missing a day is likely to start a downward spiral, so enlisted DH or a friend to push/encourage.

1 - My main excuse for not eating right is that my husband and I have very different ideas about food and what I should buy. He doesn't like me to spend money on food or to cook.
2 - My mindset is negative- "What does it matter? I will never get it right".
3 - I am not consistent with tracking.

Strategy:
1 - Show husband my calorie plan and what it includes. Get some sort of agreement out of him.
2 - Start using affirmations to help change my mind set
3 -Determine to be consistent with measuring and tracking.

1 - My main excuse for not exercising regularly is being too tired.
2 - I also complain about the lack of time to change clothes and get to the gym.
3 - I say I'll exercise t home instead of driving to the gym, but I don't.

Strategy:
1 - Remember that I feel less tired after I work out!
2 - Plan gym time better to coincide with my schedule.
3 - Schedule home exercise just like I do my gym workout.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

What really helps me is remembering how good I feel after I've spent time at the gym!

1. Keep exercising within 1/2 hr of waking up. It keeps me motivated for the rest of the day and also alleviates the pain of arthritis
2. Being semi-retired I still sometimes have a hectic schedule. I think I will exercise after work but never do so I adjust my wake time to do it before work.
3. Thinking once I reach goal weight I can quit my plan. I am training myself that this has to be a life plan not a diet plan.

Not consistent with exercise - I am ok for awhile, but let being tired or other plans get in the way. This time- exercise first- play later

Not sticking with the diet - letting others influence me. This time- say no to my sister who loves to bake and have something to eat when I go visit her. Log faithfully with following the DASH Diet - only way it will work.

Not giving 100% on my weight loss. This time - remember, I am only fooling myself. If I stick with Spark People and the guidance they give, I will succeed!!

List your 3 reasons/excuses on why your lifestyle (diets and exercise) plans have not been well executed in the past. Write a strategy for each one to keep yourself on track for 8 weeks.

1. I didn't really commit to it. I was more 'interested' than committed. I learned this from Linda Spangle's 100 Days of Weight Loss!
2. I didn't take control of my life, my health
3. I allowed myself to be easily swayed by others, worried too much about what others would think or say. I didn't share that I was on a mission to take control and live a healthier lifestsyle.

My Strategy:

1) I have healthy reading material. I'm an avid reader and I make sure I have healthy books. Love Yoga Journal and 100 Days of Weight Loss.

2) I'm in control now. I prepare a shopping list with foods that I want and need. I'm sharing my needs with others - family, friends.

3) I simply don't buy all the 'junk' that I used to buy. No one in my household 'needs' it! It's best for all of us to not have it. I'm also moving more and more.

What have you learned along the way that has really helped you?

I need to post as often as I can to SP. I need to be prepared and plan ahead. Take time for me and put myself first.
