As a nurse who specialize in cardiac post heart attack patient care I frequently gave the speech about what doing fitness activities really was - not a stroll in the park, but a focused, rapid walk around the track.

If I'm sweating, I know I am doing a fitness workout, but honestly, I am happy some days just to have my Fitbit register my Step goal no matter how I got them.

I think our challenge will help me reset my determination and consistency.

emoticon I will remember. I usually put my stuff on SP anyway, and have actually been pondering turning off the Fitbit tracking because it gives a false reflection of what I've done that day. I don't usually count cleaning the house... Even when it is heavy cleaning like what I've been doing (shampooing the carpets and moving furniture).

emoticon Warning - we over estimate the intensity and calories burned from exercise! For instance when you see something like heavy cleaning and house cleaning lumped together here on Sparkpeople, there is a BIG difference in the calories burned and actual amount of exercise done between heavy/house cleaning.

Please distinguish between intentional exercise and activity.

'Intentional exercise' - that which we do above and beyond our normal activities. For instance if you are a mail carrier what 'intentional exercise' do you after work?

emoticon Tracking Devices - Questions about counting minutes from devices, i.e. fitbit, spark tracker etc. Those minutes are activity minutes, NOT all are exercise minutes, only count your intentional exercise. Repeat - Only count exercise minutes NOT activity minutes as recorded by fitbit or spark activity tracker. We ONLY COUNT intentional exercise when adding fitness minutes to our team's total.

For example, I have a fitbit but I time my walks and workouts to track my exercise minutes. Overall Leader JMCADE says - I have a fitbit, and when I know I am heading out for a walk, I set the timer so that it tracks it as exercise minutes. Any minutes that are done for strength exercises are added separately.

As a general rule, to count as Aerobic you need to get your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Strength training is easier to time. Stretching counts as fitness also but only if it is intentional and lasts for more than a few minutes.
