are you talking about printing it out on the fabric itself? Or using a special printing paper to do it?

if you want you can make the blocks 8.5x11 or some size close to that and the images can be printed from the computer using free drawings on the internet

Not sure how often I'll get up there after 6pm with Doug working, but I am up for squares and can either send them via mail, or Doug could deliver them somewhere on his way to work. Depending on which day, I may even get to go to the store and just wait for him one day....all depends.

I've donated bunches of fabric to Bev at Project Linus!!! She's awesome!

I'm all for making more quilts. Do we want to do a bunch in the same design or mix it up a bit??

Leslie has said that we can use the classroom at her store (Commercial Art Supply downtown) if we want to get together.

I like the idea of doing quilts for local agencies. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the previous mentioned one. But considering how many great folks we have here, we could probably do more than one quilt.
Either way, I would still like to participate.

I also make quilts every year for the local Project Linus. They use the quilts for people who houses burn down ...
In 2009, I made 18 quilts for how many years old my son is who has a fatal disease
I use fleece for the backing so they are so soft and cudly and Bev will supply fabric and fleece if needed

Hey everyone.

So Doug came up with an idea...maybe it's not something that would be accepted..but He mentioned just making a series of quilts, intstead of being judged at the fair, we could always make direct donations to the Golisano Childrens Hospital, Ronald McDonald House or other agencies that depend on such donations.

Just a thought.

hey, if they NEED them, then great. It just doesn't seem from their website that they need them. But we'll make one none the less!!!

How about 6" squares on white fabric?? The overall quilt can't be bigger than 45"x56" (I think that's what it is).

How many people want to do squares?? I guess that would be a good place to start and then figure out size from there.

Here is the NYS fair answer:
Hi Shirley,

Since it is the NYS Fair, we have entries from the entire state. We have given the quilts locally in years past as you know. Please look at the friends of Karen website. A friend from the group was visiting the Fair last year and suggested that this organization would have need of the quilts. The Supt of Arts and Crafts recommended this group after personally inquiring about it. Cheryl

Thanks for contacting the State Fair. Yes, I understand that it's still a charitable source...I just liked the idea that the children we made the quilts for were locally and not all near NYC. Children are children and the cause is still good, but CNY seems to take the hit for causes more near NYC and that area. Though it IS the NYS fair...and all of NYS should be included...I would assume there are plenty of quilters who don't necessarily live in the CNY area whose quilts haven't gone to that community or even state they live in. So maybe my attitude needs to stick with the charitble focus for children and not necessarily the "area".

I'm a bit saddened. Why are these quilts going to headquarters of bigger cities? Last year our quilts stayed "local" at local CNY hospitals. Now it kind seems like a commercialized business that gets them.

The coloring book idea sounds great.
Here's some additional thoughts:
Should there be a theme to the coloring pictures?
IE: basic toys, girls or boys theme, mickey mouse, etc
Maybe each block bordered in a primary color with the black & white as the main border - similar to a filmstrip if you can envision this.
Possibly adding a little pocket, could be a square to itself, where a pack of fabric crayons or markers could be included.

something just struck me. What do you guys think about a "coloring book" quilt?? We can each do a block where we each trace a favorite picture in just outline, like you would find in a coloring book (or just trace a page out of a coloring book) then we can do the boarders of the quilt in black & white with just a splash of color here & there??? The idea being that the sibling can "color in" the block with or for the sick sibling...or with the whole family! I don't know that it would win without explanation, but it sure would be cool/fun for the recipient!!

They posted the rules for entries for the Fair today. The quilts will be donated to "Friends of Karen" ( www.friendsofkaren.org ) I'm not quite understanding why this organization because it looks like they have the siblings make squares and build a quilt from there not that they take donations of quilts. But.......

So...we're looking for something a bit more "grown up" this year. I'm still pondering a design. Anyone got any ideas??

HEY! That's a great idea!! We can send out a "plan" for the quilt and anyone who wants to send it in can and those who want to get together or NEED to get together (cause of lack of machine or unsure of how) we can!!!

Does that sound like a plan??

Oh, about "why the Art Store?".... it's a big open space that we can use for FREE! Where we know there's tables & electricity!!! Leslie is manager and can do that for us.

OK...I know I'm NOT from Syracuse, but my heart is in upstate NY. SO....if you guys get a pattern figured out and want squares contributed, I'd be happy to do a couple and mail them to you. Once you figure out what you are doing and how, you will have a better idea if this would work. Let me know.

I'm hoping to get to the Adirondacks over Memorial Day weekend in order to go to our (NY) church's ladies retreat in Lake Placid. I may be picking up my dh in the Syracuse Airport b/c I'm not sure he can ride the 12 hours. SO.....I could even pick up what would be needed if necessary, but mailing seems like a more reasonable option to me.

B/c of dh's health (or lack thereof) I have NO idea how much we will be able to be in NY this summer if at all. But I will keep on thinking of you all and imagining the warm days and cool nights......... Jo

I'm still in Cortland, but I'm interested. Will we be doing separate entries this year as you thought? I got a WHOLE bunch of fabric from a friends aunt. I'm quite excited! I may not be able to attend all the meetups. But I sure would like to try as I LOVED this.

We're planning on going to the fair on Sept. 4th as Switchfoot is playing in Chevy Court FOR FREE! :O)

Is anyone interested in working together on a quilt to put in the "You Be The Judge" contest at the Fair this year??? If we start thinking NOW we won't be rushed at the last minute.
