Here is a neat website that shows you how to make your own mp3 mixes for each week. It takes a bit of computer savvy but all of the voice prompts are there for every week. I already had the required software on my computer so I went ahead and made my first two weeks with the music I love.

Great idea about using Pandora while running. It livens things up and you hear fresh songs that you otherwise might not have on your playlist. Gives you great ideas. Only problem is the tempo is up and down, but if you can live with that, it's great!

"Dieting, to me, means a temporary situation until I can get to a certain number on the scale only to go back to how things used to be. It is what kept me from embracing all that this great journey could offer. But no more—I am living a healthy lifestyle!"- Nancy Howard

FYI regarding music, I've been collecting song ideas from all over the website. I'm working on making playlists on the internet, so you can turn on and just hit 'random' on.

If you have an android phone that has the 2.2 (FroYo) platform, you can use the website for free :D

Right now I'm just compiling songs, will be breaking them into BPM later.

The main SparkPeople playlists are listed as like SparkSongs or something...but I have other ones there too ;)

I have a pretty eclectic play list on my Ipod.

Anything from Shinedown's Sound of Madness CD (They're going to be in concert here in a couple of weeks!!)

Matt Nathanson, Sequoyah Prep School, Owl City (darn my kid for all 3 of those)

Stone Sour, Rage Against the Machine, Van Morrison, Beatles, blues, anything classical...just as long as there is something playing I'm good.

The journey is the reward.

Maybe I'm revealing my age and geographic location here, but does any one besides me listen to country? I do have some eighties songs too on my ipod. My favorites to motivate me while jogging:

"Ready to Run" Dixie chicks
"Get on Your Feet" Gloria Estefan

I've got quite a mix from George Jones to Trace Adkins, with a little Huey Lewis in there too.

Wow, nobody has mentioned Pandora.com's mobile phone app! I NEED my Pandora while I walk, and now run. I have several "channels" I listen to. Black Eyed Peas is my favorite, but I have Nelly Furtado, Lady Gaga, Hip Hop/Urban (this one has anger issues). I cool down with Jack Johnson channel. If I'm just walking I use other rock channels I've made.

This app is free and I can make channels for whatever mood I'm in! Love that I can just text myself with the treadmill summary for easy tracking when I get home too!

Wish I could listen to music while doing laps at the pool. Sigh.

I love Re-education through labor and Uprising as workout songs. They have awesome beats and lyrics that just really get you to push yourself. :)

Its kind of funny, I originally wrote this as a blog, and then found this thread, so I thought I'd share my fave songs & why. :)

1. Bush - Machinehead - "Breath In Breath Out, Breath In Breath Out, Breath In... " Helps remind me when I'm running to focus on my breathing, while repeating it to a rockin' tune that motivates me to keep moving!

2. Crystal Method - Calling All Freaks - "Listen all you mothaf**kas!" That's how the song starts. When I'm running (or ellipting) along and I hear that, the transformation begins and I become unstoppable. Listen closely and you'll hear this song in just about every Nicholas Cage or Vin Diesel action sequence ever made (OK, maybe not EVERY one of them, maybe only like one or two, but close enough). This song comes on, and suddenly its like I'm a little Cage-Diesel hybrid. Listen all you mothaf**kas - don't mess with me, because I will stomp you like this here elliptical, ok? OK.

3. Foo Fighters - All My Life - "All my life I've been searchin' for somthin', somthin' never comes never leads to nothin'... nothing satisfies but I'm gettin' close... closer to the prize at the end of the rope... And I'm done, done, on to the next one...." OK, so I'm preeeeety sure he's actually talking about yo-yo dieting here. Don't you think? OK, maybe not, but that's how it sounds to me when I'm treading away. My mind starts thinking "ugh, this is too hard, I can't go another 30 seconds, I'm too fat for this." Then I hear these lyrics and I'm like NO MORE! I WILL DOMINATE THIS WORK OUT, BE DONE, AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE!!!

4. Seether - Remedy - "My eyes don't need to see that ugly thing, I know its me you fear" This is basically what Athlete-Me says to Fat-Me. Fear me, fatty, I'm coming for you!

5. Jay Z - On To The Next One - So there really isn't any particular lyric in this song, it's more about the gusto of it. Jay Z is just so confident and has so much swagger. I listen to his music while working out and I'm like "I know Jay! I feel your pain! Its a tough job being this AWESOME, but man, someone has to do it, and it might as well be us!"

6. Kanye - Stronger - "That which don't kill me, can only make me stronger... I know I got to be right now, cuz I can't get much wronger..." and "work it longer, do it better, do it faster, makes us stronger" This is pretty unoriginal for a workout playlist song, but come on, its practically mandatory and pretty self explanatory.

7. La Rissa - I Do Both Jay & Jane (Sireena Breakbeats Mix) OK, so lets clear up first and foremost that I do NOT do both Jay and Jane. Just Jay for me, folks! Now that we have that out of the way... This song doesn't have any particular lyrics that motivate me, but the beat is AWESOME. It starts out kind of slow, but when the sirens start and it gets into the breakbeats, it becomes so kick ass. You can't help but want to move your body like crazy.

8. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out - "I bleed it out, dig in deeper, just to throw it away" This song is a reminder of exactly what I need to do to get rid of the weight and get healthy! Gotta dig deep. Gonna take blood, sweat, and tears! But once its gone, its gone baby!

9. Muse - Uprising - "We will be victorious." Or namely, I will be victorious. This treadmill or this elliptical will not destroy me. My food choices will not destroy me. My every day life will not destroy me. I WILL be victorious!

10. Outkast - Hey Ya! - "Shake it like a Polaroid picture!" Get up and shake your booty, mama! Work it girl, move that body!

11. Poison - Nothin' But A Good Time - "Ain't lookin' for nothin' but a good time, and it don't get better than this!" When my work out starts getting mundane, this song comes on, and dumps buckets of fun all over me! How can you NOT have a good time when this song comes on?!

12. Rage Against The Machine - Renegades of Funk - "No matter how hard you try, you can't stop us now... Say jam sucka, jam sucka, now groove sucka, groove sucka, say dance sucka, dance sucka, now MOVE SUCKA, MOVE SUCKA!" This song grabs me by the back of the head, throws me to the treadmill, and tells me what to do! Just the way I like it!

13. Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music - Another fun song with a great beat to keep me moving!

14. Rise Against - Re-Education Through Labor - "To the sound of a heartbeat pounding away to the rhythm of the awful rusted machines... we crawl on our knees for you, under a sky no longer blue, we sweat all day long for you..." When I hear this one, I instantly go into damn-the-man mode (the man here being my treadmill), and start busting ass if for no other reason than spite alone and doing it just to say I can. I'll show you stupid machines! You won't get the best of me, not today!!!

15. Scars On Broadway - They Say - The guitar riffs in this song are insane, and make me want to pretty much spazz out in a crazy epileptic air-guitar fit. Fortunately for me and my pride, I can't really do that on an elliptical or treadmill, so instead I just move faster and work a little harder while playing air guitar in my mind!

16. Sick Puppies - You're Goin' Down - "Its been a long time comin', but you've got the message now, one of us is goin', you're the one that's goin' down." This is a song perfect for some serious ass-kickery. Listen to this song, and you'll be ready to beat the crap out of someone (or something), or, even better, running the crap out of your treadmill or pumping the crap out of your weights. Either way, you'll get the crap outta something with this song!

17. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll - "Off Off with their heads... dance dance til you're dead... heads will roll... heads will roll on the floor" Except, in my head, it goes more like "off off with the fat... run run til you're dead... sweat will fall, sweat will fall on the floor."

18. 3OH!3 - Don't Trust Me - Another booty shaker!

19. Smashing Pumpkins - Zero - More fast paced ass kickery.

20. Keith Urban - Sweet Thing - PERFECT cool down song! I like to think Keith Urban is singing to me, "my sweet thing, the moon is high and the night is young, come and meet me on the back porch under the cottonwood tree..." I'm like, OK Kieth, just let me do some stretching and I'm there!

Well, that's the best of them! I hope if you don't already have them on your playlist, I've given you some good ideas!

honestly right now my sound track consists of mainly Glee songs haha just something about them that makes me feel free and good

We have to know that sometimes people will let us down. Caring about others and loving others takes risk and probably more than we have in us most of the time. But I think the more we put out there, we'll have something returned greater than we could have imagined.

Okay, I know it's really old and everyone has probably already heard of it, but I just discovered the Eminem and Nate Dogg song, 'Til I Collapse. I'm really not much of an Eminem fan, but this song is so fantastic for pushing through the last, hardest part of your workout. I listen to it at the end of every C25k workout.

This is my first week, in fact today will be my day 3 of the first week but I am from puerto rico so I run to latin music most of the times. When I walk and or run my favorite is salsa music from Gilberto Santa Rosa. When I want a little more tranquility in my brain but still need music I run to slow R&B songs like Maxwell or Corrine Rae Bailey.

I downloaded the "Master the Treadmill" thing from Nike + Ok Go a few years ago, and love the heck out of that thing -- I totally agree, seeing them on their treadmills in my mind makes me grin every time.

And also, this is kinda weird, but the "Sanford and Son" theme is one of my all time favorites to walk / jog to -- there's juuuuust enough cowbell.

Hi Sgoode...

There are a couple out there.

http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/p
age4/page4.html

This one is mostly techno, and I used it a few times, but then went to the following one:

http://runningintoshape.com/5k-training-
downloads/

This is hardly any techno (that I have heard so far) and I actually prefer it. I saw someone else post the following link:

gonicoleyourself.blogspot.com/2008/06/co
uc
h-to-5k-podcast-page.html

I have not tried this one (but am going to take a look today, so I am not sure what it is all about.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

I am new to the podcasts and have a couple different ones. I need one that will tell me to start and stop running, maybe throw in some motivation, and isn't real techno. Any suggestions?

Hi Princess, I have to agree with you. I have both "Glee" albums, which is over an hour and a half of GREAT songs, including musical numbers. Defying Gravity is one of my favorites to run to! Sometimes it's not about the speed of the music as much as it is about how much you enjoy the meaning!

My favorite line (and SO appropriate) - "I'm through accepting limits, cause someone says they're so"

That's why I am doing this!

I love musicals to run with! I mean how great of an anthem for someone going from sedentary to a runner than "Defying Gravity" from Wicked? There are so many upbeat songs that keep me focused on them instead of the intimidating prospect for me of running.

I have both their albums downloaded and I set it to play random while I'm running/walking. They are truly awesome. It's nice music too because there is no singing so it's a bit more meditative in nature wihout the distraction of singing. I find it easier to run to.

I like Podrunner Intervals for C25K myself (they call it "First Day to 5 K")

When running to my own music I always try to time my first run cycle to "Here It Goes" by Ok Go! It makes me think of them dancing on treadmills (and makes me smile) and it's a good motivating song for me.

Watch me train for the Disney Marathon! Witness my dorky running outfits! Laugh as I get lost two blocks from my own house!

I still can't believe Nike helped me, but the music for their new short video that has been airing during the Olympics has perked me up like nothing else. It is called "Ali in the Jungle" by the Hours. Love it!

A new favorite...this one is from the AT&T ad with Apolo Ohno. It's by The XX and it's called Intro. I love it for warming up and cooling down...it kind of draws me in somehow....

When resisting, ask, "What am I afraid of?"

"If you are still sweating, you aren't dead." (Nike tshirt that I should have bought on the spot!)

I found these two songs totally get me going.

Jully Black - "Running"
(It's not actually about jogging, but it's super motivational and has a great beat.)

Ciara (feat. Missy Elliot) - "Work"
(This song is the perfect tempo for my runs and it's definitely encouraging.)

DeLaSoul has a track out for Nike that designed for a 5k run. It takes you through varying paces and it's not too harsh. I really enjoy it.

I SO have to try some of the above suggestions!

I usually run to pop music: Britney, Christina. Right now my fave is Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance."

I've found that Psychosocial by slipknot is a great running song for me, especially when I'm getting to the end and want to push it a little. I go slow and steady with the beat on the versus which really gets my legs working and then the chorus I like to just go as fast as I can! :)

I like to run to rap as well...lol. It has a great beat. My fav right now is Ice Cream Paint Job - Dorrough. It's not the kinda song I'm gonna listen to in the car, but for running it works out well for me.

I love a lot of 'guilty pleasure' sort of hip-hop and rap. The tempos just pump me up.

Examples:
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Mary J. Blige - I'm Fine
Whitney Houston - It's Not Right But It's OK (Remix)
Thunderheist - Jerk It
