Also, have a little fun. Most, if not all libraries check out movies and DVDs and books on tape if you have the equipment to play them and you are close enough to use the library. Many cities and towns have free weekly papers that list fun events like free outdoor movie night, free concerts in the park, etc. Things sound pretty challenging right now, so it's important to try not to lose sight of the fact that you have a right to be happy.

buy frozen vegetables instead of canned. They are usually lower in sodium and healthier to eat. Frozen Generic brands (small bag) are comparable to 2 canned goods in quantity at least usually. You are doing great! emoticon

I am able to cook. I can make stew, spaghetti, hamburgers, store bought boneless chicken breasts, and homemade chicken fajita burrito's. There is more I can cook. LOL!

I do watch for day old bread, veggies, and stuff. One of the reasons I buy TV dinners is the vegetable servings that come with them. Fruits and stuff are just too high for my pockets. I try to buy canned fruits and vegetables instead. They run
about 89 cents piece to $2.00 if I buy generic brands.

I also try to make use of coupons. I know they can save me a buck or two. Buying meat seems to be costly too because I use it up too fast even if I measure it out.

Tv dinners also make it easier for me to track my calorie intake every day. I'm not starving myself.LOL! I do think about nutrition and healthy eating. I also think about how limited I am in being able to buy stuff. I would be in trouble if I had any bills to pay. My sister pays the rent and other bills right now.

My mom hopefully will be coming home soon. She's been
in recovery after a stroke in Feb. I've been coping with the family problems basically alone. Holding down the fort.Dealing with the accusations of being a moron and not knowing anything. Misusing money.

Sorry for rambling on.

If you are out walking around at lunch time, beforehand, look up where your local salvation army is. They almost always offer a free lunch. no questions, no problems, just walk in and they'll feed you.
also, cut out the doritos ... but a gi-normous bag of carrots and slice them up to eat instead of chips.
also, get a big (like 32 oz. or bigger) 'water bottle" at the dollar store (or like) and just fill that with water & ice before starting out on your walk.
And don't forget to recycle the bottles you have! (if they do recycling where you are!)
check local churches to see if they have a food bank ... usually one day a week, but check ALL the churches ... you can pick up TONS of food that way. I know, i used to have NO INCOME at ALL, when i was living out of my blazer ... and i still managed to lose weight (forget the processed food, hit the day old fruit & veggies)
good luck.

Wow. Your situation is much like mine was. I was able to earn about $200/month selling my blood plasma. That money was spent on a $54 bus pass, $66 rent, and the rest for food, clothing and personal products (soap, shampoo, laundry, etc). Since I started with only the clothes on my back, it was tough to budget. At first, I ate little but Ramen Noodles (9 for 99cents at the 99cents Only Store and easy to carry on the bus). I went to a lot of morning Al-Anon Meetings (for the families of people who drink/use drugs) because they had free coffee and donuts.

I didn't notice what a toll poor nutrition was taking until someone else pointed out that my hair was falling out -- a lot.

I sure didn't want to ask for help, but a lot of really great people reached out to me.

Remember, nothing lasts forever when you stick to a plan for change. Today I have a job, a home, a car, clothes, insurance, and friends who love me. My old life was only three years ago.

I wish you all the best. Please take everyone's advice about taking care of your health and nutrition. I found a church that served hot lunches to the poor -- it was nutritious food, worth waiting in line for. Next week, I'll be serving lunch there with my church group.

Let's walk!

Squirtzie that reminded me of something. When I was shopping the last time there was a section that had reduced items to such low prices a variety of items from yogurt, cheese, meat etc. R this was a Kroger store. If you have a Kroger store and it is not a gas guzzling trip maybe check out the refrigerator shelves a couple times a week. I was shocked how low the prices were. Maybe you could even call a store and see if they put certain items on clearance certain days or if it is all just hit and miss. In this Kroger it was not by the yogurt but it seems to me it was just in a weird place in refrigerator section. Sending prayers!

It seems to me you use your money very wisely. I wish I did so good.
The only other thing I might add is if you live in a fairly large town if there is a Salvation Army they serve hot meals every day. It does not cost anything at the one around here. Sometimes there are also churches that serve meals. Have you checked out the food shelf in your area? That could really help a lot. Sometimes the $1 Stores sell 2 lb rice or macaroni for $1.
Money does not go very far today. Around here a can of vegetables is over $1, so it is very expensive when I buy groceries.

are you on ssi and she is your payee? i am on ssi and my hubby is mine and i get maybe 20 ever other week. but your doing the best you can. i agree with the cooking part. one week you may have to spend more bt if you freeze the other week here and there your food bill will be alot cheaper. i am such a animal lover but if you cant afford to have them ....... not EVEN telling you to get rid of your cat he/she is family but would maybe not get anymore tell your money situation is more what you want. wish you had more to do something once in awhile instead of the needs of everyday living. i praise you to be able to go to the mall and walk and be able to look and not buy even tho you dont have the money it would depress me to all get out if i was to do that. kudos to you on that.

greetings.... money management classes are usually available thru 'family-centered' United Way organizations... and I agree with SPARKLING about getting healthier food than the TV dinners... Maybe some cooking classes would help also... blessings emoticon emoticon

Now a days unfortunately money doesn't seem to stretch as far as it once did. It sounds like you are being very responsible in using the money your sister is giving you. I wonder if there is an organization that can help with meal planning and financial planning in your area (Some areas offer free services). I don't know your situation, do you or are you willing to learn to cook? You could have healthier meals and have leftovers and even freeze some. This may also stretch money further making soups, chili, meatloaf, etc. If this is not an option then I think you are doing the best you can do. I admire the way you are working with a difficult situation! emoticon

I need some tips on money management. This really seems to be a problem with my family. I'm not sure if I misuse money or not however, I want to find out if I do.

My sister gives me about $100 a week for food and gas. I buy 88 cent tv dinners by Banquet. I figure out how many I need to last a week. I buy about 14. lunch and dinner each day.

I also buy generic bread,drink mix,cereal,and milk.
I average about $30.00 or $40.00 at the store when I go.

I spend $20.00 on gas for my mom's car however, $40.00 fills it up. I rarely drive it so I just fill it up to half a tank. Use that money for other things.

I spend about $10.00 a week doing laundry. And the
occasional trip for cat food and cat litter. I buy
the cheapest I can. $3.00 cat litter and $6.00 food.

I also buy water out of the machines at the mall when I walk. $1.25. Lately though I take my own water. Use machines every once in a while.

I did spend $10.00 on 5lb hand weights $5.00 each.

I never go to the movies. I never even rent.
I may buy Dorito's to snack on or eat with my sandwiches. I always measure out a serving and if
I want more chips, I drink water instead.

Well, this is what I use money for.
