Woweetoo~ Thanks for sharing your story.

I am also frustrated with my medication and weight gain. I seem to be steadily gaining 2-3 lb a week.
I worked so hard to lose weight and now I am almost right back where I was. I am on Celexa which my Dr. tells me is weight neutral. I can see me not losing but steadily gaining is depressing. I might as well eat cake all day long. I think I will call my pharmacist and see what he says.

Thanks for listening.

I agree your personal genetic makeup probably affects how your body reacts to medication. I've been on Lexapro for a year and a half and the generic Wellbutrin XL for a month and Ambien CR for a year and a half - so far no issues w/weight gain.

my mom takes ambian. I know there is now a generic for the ambian - i think the extended release ones and there may be a generic for the other or they may be getting ready sometime to get a generic out. I will talk to her and see what I can find out. She was having the same issue of the expense and I know one of the types of ambian is now in a generic form cause she was so glad it was so much cheaper

I am still going to talk to the Doctor and find out if it is worth it to take the Metformin or not. It will be up to the blood work.

the princess has requested my story again for everyone out there losing weight so here goes..
when i started my weight loss program i was 300 plus pounds (the plus was big enough i don't want to think about it) and i started to diet oh my i have been through the diets and although i lost as a diabetic it was really hard....
and then one day i moved to nashville several years ago and the new endo sent me to a nutritonist in his clinic and i got this referral to sparkpeople it has been one of the most significant moments in my life i spent the last two years here logging my food keeping my blood sugar on track and losing weight when i came to spark i was still 190 which in and of itself is not bad for being on my own but i was sort of stuck..and needed 'company' this place was a lifesaver..i met tons of new people in the same boat floating on the same ocean in close proximity in short i found a 'home' a place of belonging and some of the weight came off but last year i spent 9 months on a plateau nine and nothing moved throw up your hands time but i kept right in there..believe me when i say nothing lasts forever but it seemed that way ...then last october i joined a challenge (i think it was the turkey trot or something like that and it was for 10 pounds by thanksgiving well something happened there and by thanksgiving 18 pounds was gone and i had already joined in with the jingle bellers and lost even another 20 and by the time mid january came it was gone?? what happened??? it was time i guess because i was still logging food and still drinking water and still exercising but sometimes you gotta wait and have faith and mind you all that weight came off during the holidays and i can guarantee i fell off those challenges more than once.. the secret get right back on the next meal.. since january i have mostly maintained except i lost another 17 pounds below my goal ..what a deal that was and i am still eating the same stuff that tells me my eating habits became healthy for sure and i still go to birthdays and weddings and partied (that is the stuff of celebrations and life) and i have cake and goodies but with the cake i can now have two bites (frosting please) and pitch it two bites is my celebration and it is good i don't want any more than that..my diet is as balanced as it can be seeing as i am both diabetic and in stage three of kidney disease...i will say this if i could do it and maintain (and there are a lot of people on this site maintaining today) everyone can..it doesn't mean you will quit living only that there will be times when it doesn't happen and when those times come you have to not guilt trip yourself but pick up and carry on..there are an infinite number of possibilities here at sparkpeople and so many in that same place..find your place here and post often and encourage others and that encourages yourself to carry on me i am always on and lady-in-waiting to her royallness the princess hugs ya'll mary

Oh my G**! I just picked up my new prescriptions. The Ambien CR was $136! New drug, no generic. The Abilify was $36. There goes my disability!!

Had a surgery in July. The weight has been creeping up on me since then. Think I was nervous about exercising. Not an excuse. Seriously was worried about damaging myself. Lost 100lbs back in 2009....20lbs back in past 3 1/2 months. Gotta get active....

I believe it really depends on your own unique biological make-up. If you have read all the subjects (concerning weight gain on antidepressants) on this team, You will see that what works for one person is another persons worst nightmare. For me, I gained alot of weight while on Effexor, didn't gain weight on Prozac, and lost a little weight on Welbutrin XL. Good luck on finding a medicine that will work for you.

I guess it depends on the person I am on Cymbalta and I lost 34 pounds. I recently was put on a Metformin which is not a depression med it is for diabetes and I have stopped losing while eating the same foods and amounts. I am not happy with this at all. I am waiting for my blood work to come back to see if the Metformin is helping to keep my sugar down or not before talking to the Doctor.

One of my many meds has just been switched from Seqoquel (fat pill) to Ability (sounds like). After a screaming match between my psych med nurse and after a hysterical visit with my GP. They WOULDN'T take me off the Depakote which is also a fat pill but no biggie. I'm off of the worse one, Seroquel. They changed my sleeping pill to Ambien CR. Regular isn't working. I don't know if you read my other post but I've put on 55 pounds in two months.

I was just switched off of Cymbalta, which has a side of weight gain, to Effexor XR. This one does not have that side in fact its side is weight loss. Dr. Also said Wellbutrin has the weight loss side. Hope this helps

greetings and welcome ILUVITALY, I am one of those people who was weight-appropriate and on meds for several years.... and then I crushed my foot in a snow-ski accident... and being in a wheelchair etc.. WELL, that is when I gained weight... So I gladly take my meds AND I am losing weight.. So for me meds were not the reason I gained weight... it was other things like chronic pain and exercise avoidance emoticon So I wish you the very best as you learn ways to manage depression and all health issues... we are all here for the journey!!! blessings emoticon emoticon

When my p-doc put me on anti depressants I asked her not to put me on anything that would cause weight gain. She put me on Lexapro and I haven't gained weight. However, there are others that say that they did gain on Lexapro. So I think talking to your physician about your concerns is the first step.
