You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Soon after I woke this morning, I thought about the two lines that Carol quoted and, I think, found some clarity on what it means to make the effort.

Some of us fear "failing again." Others have a mountain of a time getting started. Yet others don't even get started, whether they've made any effort or not.

It's not about winning or losing or achieving or failing. It's about the doing. When inertia, indecision and/or apathy are the rule, "doing" in and of itself is a triumph. Doing is better than not doing. Doing implies power. Doing is what makes a person feel alive, reminds a person know that he's alive. It counts greatly. It strikes me as very much like finding relief from depression by thinking a tiny bit less about ourselves and a tiny bit more about someone or something else.

Yes, Carol, those are powerful statements. They make the path to goal clear. Like many things, not easy, but definitely simple.

Without your recommendation, I would never have watched this video. Two lines resonated with me. "If there is no enemy within, no outer enemy can defeat you." " You have to want it as much as you want to breathe."

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

I'm a skeptic about motivational videos, speakers, quotations and the like. However, someone at another website posted a link and I surprised myself by actually clicking and watching the full six minutes. I think it's excellent and certainly the sort of thing to watch as often as needed. The voiceover applies to all areas of life and it doesn't matter that the visual seems to be about athletics only. It really shows the drive. What I got from the video after one viewing is that we can do anything and, even if it doesn't come to fruition, the determination and confidence to make effort are their own rewards.
