I am so sorry to hear of your problems with self harm and picking. I hope that you can find a therapist or psychiatrist who can help you figure out how to stop the habit. Is it because of severe anxiety that you pick? Medication may be able to help out with that as Kris has said. As Kate said too, we have a Daily Chat thread and we would love to see you participate in that if you need support whether mental or moral. We also have a Bad Day - Get Help Here thread that can be of help when you need a boost or some good advice. Whatever avenue you decide to take let us know and keep us up to date on your condition and how we might be able to help. My heart goes out to you. Keep in touch. Take care and God bless, Deb :) emoticon

I strongly urge you to talk with your Dr and ask for a referral to a Therapist. If you aren't on meds, it is possible that you may require them for a while to settle you down a bit. It is one thing to stop the self-harming, but you need to get to the route of the cause and deal with that, and that is where the Therapist comes in. They will be able to give you the tools to deal with it if it appears again in the future.

Good luck,
Kris

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. My eldest sister, myself, and my adult daughter all have picking compulsions with our OCD. My DD used to pick at her face until it bled when she was just a baby/toddler. She would wipe the blood on the wall beside her crib. She used to bite down on her thumbnail so hard that it was misshapen for years. We not only skin pick, but pick skin off the inside of our mouths with our teeth, too. I just always assumed picking was a part of obsessive-compulsive disorder, but maybe it's a separate diagnosis. I guess I should do some research.

I hope you can get help for it and that things get better for you. emoticon

I first heard about picking when I watched Dr. Pimple Popper. She had a patient that picked, then claimed she had some disease. She went to over 20 Dr.'s and they all told her the same thing, It is an emotional problem, there is nothing to cure. She doesn't believe any of the Dr's, even Dr. Pimple Popper and insists she has a curable disease

@TEAGRLMAGICK Hi, I have been picking since I was a preteen with severe acne. I feel better when I pop a zit or pick out a tiny core. when ever I feel a SMALL bump I have to pick. I still have acne from touching my face all the time and I am 51. FOr a few years I chose to run my fingers through my hair and only pick my head where people couldnt see what I was doing to myself.

Be gentle with yourself. I guess it is self harm. I never thought of that before. I do know there is an official diagnosis for it in the DSM5 the manual for psychiatric disorders...so you are not alone. There are enough of us that it is officially a thing to diagnose.

WHenever you are low or not even...feel free to join our daily chat and get to know several of us. We would love to support you. It is a very caring group.

Hope to see you around
Kate

I have come to the conclusion that I self-harm. It's not cutting or anything like that but I scratch and pick at my skin. From what I've read and researched, this is self-harm, I feel a relief when I do it and my body is covered with scars from it. I'm having trouble finding a way to stop this behaviour or how to handle the stress and just feeling low.
