Let's start by reading the following chapters: Introduction, Spiritual Electricity: The Basic Principles, The Basic Tools, and Week 1: Recovering a Sense of Safety. (That's 48 pages.)

Our tasks for Week One are:

1. Do the reading and sign your contract.
2. Do your Morning Pages daily.
3.Take yourself on an Artist Date.
4. Do the Chapter One exercises.
5. Go on a brisk twenty-minute walk before writing at least once.
6. Check-in here on Saturday.

When you check-in, answer the following questions only revealing as little or as much as you would like to share:

1. How many days this week did you do your Morning Pages? How was the experience for you?

2. Did you do your artist date this week? What did you do? How did it feel?

3. Were there any other issues this week that you consider significant for your recovery? Describe them.

4. Take a moment to comment on your team-mates' responses. It doesn't have to be anything profound--even a short acknowledgment and a few words of encouragement can be incredibly meaningful.

1. How many days this week did you do your Morning Pages? How was the experience for you?
I wrote morning pages four or five times this week. I had to concentrate on making an effort to get them done. While I have long periods that I do them automatically or with a burning desire, I am not in one of those periods right now. This doesnít cause me much concern Ė I appreciate the need for fallow periods. However, I also appreciate that bringing the creative process to consciousness has value and that this is the purpose of doing The Artistís Way course. So, I made the effort and I was able to get into the flow of doing Morning Pages. They were not as extensive or as deep as Iíve done before, but I am now in the habit again of doing them every day. This is a good feeling. I had the usual resistancesómy mornings are busy with responsibilities, Iím not in the mood, itís too cold at my desk, the light is too poor in the bedroom, the computer distracts me when Iím in the living room, I need to make a cup of tea before I begin, I have to complete my to-do list before I indulge my selfish and time-wasting desire to write.

2. Did you do your artist date this week? What did you do? How did it feel?
I wrote and decorated some pen-pal letters and some holiday cards. For some reason I had been putting off doing this even though it is one of my favorite things to do in December. I was actually putting it off BECAUSE it was a favorite thing. Almost as if I didnít do it then I couldnít ever mess it up and it would be forever preserved in a state of ďgoodnessĒ.

3. Were there any other issues this week that you consider significant for your recovery? Describe them.
Self-confidence and valuing creativity are still going to be ongoing issues for me. But every time I go through The Artistís Way I go up the spiral staircase towards healing and wholeness. I think part of the reason or maybe even the entire reason that Iíve never finished The Artistís Way course is that Chapter One triggers such intense feelings.
