Did You Know?

There is only one species of truly wild horse that lives today. It is Przewalski’s horse and can be found in Mongolia. They remind me of my Halflinger Gary.

There are several other feral horse populations like North American Mustang. However, these populations are not true wild horses.

All domestic horses come from just one species. However, there are 400 different types of breeds. These different breeds have different specializations.

THERE IS HISTORY BEHIND THE HAND OF THE HORSE!
A hand unit is 4 inches, and yes, it was originally based on the male human hand. The measurement began in ancient Egypt and was standardized by King Henry VIII in 1541 as a simple way to measure horses. The hand unit is the length of either a clenched fist or the breadth of the hand (although there's some debate over whether or not a thumb should be included). Because most of the time a human hand isn't exactly 4 inches by any of those measures, we now have tape measures specially designed to measure horse height and weight in both hands and centimeters.

HORSES ARE EMOTIONAL CREATURES!
Horses are capable of expressing their emotions through their facial expressions, ears, and nostrils. They are also highly perceptive to human emotions and tend to mirror them. Thus, if you’re in a good mood, your horse will most likely be amiable and easier to handle.

RIBBON READING-A RIBBON ON A TRAIL WAS TO BE ABLE TO READ SOMETHING ABOUT THEM WHEN NOT ALL PEOPLE COULD READ!
If you see a red ribbon on a horse's tail, you should stay back: It means the horse kicks. Red isn't the only color you might see, though. A white ribbon means a horse is for sale, a pink ribbon that it's a mare, and a blue or yellow ribbon that it's a stallion. A green ribbon tells you a horse is younger and probably inexperienced.

ARABIAN HORSES HAVE A FEW UNIQUE FEATURES FROM OTHER HORSES.
Compared to other horse breeds, some Arabian horses have one less rib bone and one fewer vertebra. Some legends say they were created by Allah from the wind.

There you go a few thoughts to ponder on for a while.

Interesting Facts About Horses

Horses can sleep standing up by locking their legs Joints.

Horses experience REM (rapid eye Movement during sleep, which means they most likely dream.

The word "chivalry" comes from the French cheval, meaning horse.

Some horses are able to figure out how to undo the doors of other horses and let them out. (Oh yes they can I know for a fact, happen many times to me)

Horses teeth never stop growing. So getting them filed down does not hurt their appearance.

In the early 20th century, cars were seen as an environmentally friendly solution to horse-drawn carriages because horse poop and carcasses polluted the city. One city horse could produce between 15 and 30 pounds of manure day.

In 1900, there were 15,000 horses in New York City. They produced enough manure in one year to create a pile 175 feet high, covering an acre of land and breeding 16 billion flies.

Horses have a strong band of muscles around their esophagus. This band is so strong that a horse’s stomach would burst before it would vomit.

The oldest animal carving ever found is of a horse. It dates back 31,000 years in southern Germany.

When a horse curls up its upper lip and bares its teeth, it’s not laughing at you; it’s directing scents toward a special olfactory gland in the back of its nasal passage.

Arab horses are one of the strongest endurance runners in the animal kingdom and are capable of running over 100 miles (160 km) without rest. ( I suggest you building his endurance before trying this one)

In some countries, horsemeat is considered a delicacy. In France, for example, menus often feature horsemeat, horse brains, and horse heart. (Sad but true)

The Arabian horse is not just beautiful, but their skeletal structure differs from other horses. Its ribs are wider, stronger, and deeper than other horses. They also have fewer lumbar bones and tail vertebrae.

A horse’s brain weighs about 22 oz., which is about half the weight of a human.

Humans domesticated horses about 3,500 B.C. In comparison, humans domesticated dogs about 14,000 years ago and cats about 8,500 years ago.

The American quarter horse is the world’s most popular horse breed.

The oldest horse on record was “Old Billy.” He died in 1822 at the ripe old age of 62 years. Most horses live to around 25 years.

Male and female horses have different number of teeth. Males have 44, while females have 36-40.

I agree a bout of colic would not be worth all the trouble. I have had to go through a few of them in my time and none was pleasant not to mention all the hard work to get them through it.

I love these facts. Thanks!

Yeah, the stable is on a well, but my mare's automatic waterer was defective at one point and she was sucking more air than water, and that's when she had colic. Also when we bought her she had never been inside always in pastures, but whatever the reason we take all precautions now. Oh and btw, she has let us know in no uncertain terms that she prefers being indoors. She's much more relaxed.

It's not necessary, everyone at the barn is aware and there are a couple of other horses that prefer the pail also.

Now, a horse living to 62...I guess anything is possible, but I don't believe it...

Her drinking apparatus (I forget what you call it in English) was partially blocked so she was sucking in a lot of air along with the water, so she kind of ballooned. We got it fixed but she now has a pail of water also in her stall with a hose right outside of it so a lot of folks at the barn fill it up when they see it's low. She now uses both, but prefers the pail.

No she never has any trouble getting up...except when she had colic last spring, and that freaked me completely out, but the vet showed up pretty fast, we found out what the problem was and haven't had a repeat episode (Very Thankfully!!!)

Horses can run shortly after birth.

Now how long after birth? Don't know but it is LOTS of fun to watch! emoticon

Nice! I like freaking others out at the barn sometimes.... WE KNOW OUR HORSES!

Does she ever have troubles getting up? Do you worry about this? That's what I hate the most when my horses lay down in the stall... ugh! emoticon

My mare prefers lying down and she has freaked some folks out at the stable because of this. But she is happy this way...
