I finished doing another 40 miles for February. So that's 147 miles for me. Lost the files on my phone. Moved address to Bilston on 22/02/2016.

Thanks.

Jason.

Sorry. I didn't spot the new challenge. (Senior moment I think).

I will add the instructions and the map if that's ok with everyone?

You mean I didn't need to sit on that bike for a whole hour yesterday!! emoticon

I started it A1. It's a new thread underneath this one in challenges and ideas. Maybe when we know what we're doing, Brandi can make it sticky and put it at the top.

May be taking a rest day today. Then again - all that exercise becomes a habit, but won't push myself today.

The AA and RAC route planners give Lands End to J O'G as 837 miles, so by that reckoning, we made it with some spare.

Anyway, thanks everyone. I have enjoyed being part of the team and the extra exercise I put in in February has been a great help.

If you can start the new thread off, Faith, I will add the instructions and so on to get us going.

Well done A1 and everyone else. Yes, I pushed harder yesterday as well.

Of course, we took the distance shown on the signpost. There is a route that's only 802 miles!

I hope Jason's OK. He was doing so well. Maybe he's walked even further and ended up on Skye?

So Judy, our super swimmer. I'm so impressed! You may need something warmer than a swimming costume for doing the first bit of Everest - oops, I mean Ben Nevis.

I hope we are all looking forward to climbing Ben Nevis this month. I know I am.

The route is the same way up as back, and totals a distance of 17 km (horizontal), climbing the best part of 1400m.

Even if we don't quite make it, the callenge has been successful. I pushed myself a bit longer in the gym to notch up 11.5 miles on the stationary bike, which I wouldn't have done without the challenge.

Ha ha A1, luckily being retired I can get to the Leisure Club and into the pool for 2 to 2 1/2 hours in the middle of the day. I used to go 3 times a week but found that a bit much, so mostly do twice a week. I just get in the pool, waterproof MP3 player on & go for it. As long as no-one tries to chat to me, I keep going without a break. Because I have arthritis in both knees, swimming/walking in the water is the only exercise I can do. Only pleased that I can help towards the Teams targets.
Many thanks to the rest of the gang, it's been great all of us working together. Special thanks to Faith & A1 for making it all so interesting with maps etc.
Here's to finishing February's' Challenge & good luck for the March Challenge.

Yes, I can sort something out if you start the new thread.

Sorry to hear about the 'customization' of your bumbper, but as you say, it could have been a lot worse!

I don't know how Judy does it - she must have gills! Do you have to coat yourself in lard before setting off?

Woohoo. Judy and A1 you've done well. I didn't get to the gym today. We were going walking round the Clent Hills today but I had my car pranged by a lorry this morning. It's drivable - when you think of what he could have done, and he did this

But long phone calls later (The insurance company say it's a non fault claim even without getting the witness statements) I didn't feel like driving again. So my friend came to me and we walked a neighbours dog instead. Even the dog was tired when we'd finished!!

Faith 7 miles (184.5 total)

JMMatthews 32 miles (107 total)
A1Winchester 10 miles (176.2 total)
Judy(Brandi1809) 20 miles (150.5 total)

Team Total 748 miles 126 miles to go!

4 days to go. I think we can do this - especially as there's a good chance Jason might give us a whole week's worth of miles at the weekend. I'm out for the day tomorrow (luckily the car's drivable) but will try and do 5 or 6 miles on the bike at the gym before I go and then there will be a bit of walking to add.

A1, if I start off a March Challenge thread, would you be able to find a sensible way of recording our results? You've done such a brilliant job with this one.

I like the idea of climbing Ben Nevis next month.

I suggest that everyone sets their own target fitness minutes for the month. Then we can estimate how far we have got pro-rata at any time, and if anyone exceeds their goal, it can be added to the team total to ensure everyone gets back safely.

Keep Smiling! It may never happen, and if it DID happen, what are the chances of it happening again??

Och Aye! A wee dram for me please.

I've walked a couple of miles this morning and off to play at the gym in a few minutes so I'll record everything later.

Thinking about March .... Apparently it takes on average about 8 hours to climb Ben Nevis in winter. Presumably it's a bit quicker coming down. Say 7 hours? Total 15 hours or 900 fitness minutes. (It seems a shame not to climb Ben Nevis while we're in Scotland!)

How about a combined individual and group challenge to use our fitness minutes to get up and down Ben Nevis either once or twice i.e. each have a personal challenge of 900 (just under 30 minutes a day) or 1800 fitness minutes. (60 minutes a day)

Where the group bit comes in is ..... say, for instance, Millie Milou had been at the top of Ben Nevis when she came off her bike, the rest of us would pitch in with any spare minutes to get her down again.

Then, when Brandi's back from Florida we could all set off to Dover in April.

What do you all think?

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Don't worry about not being able to do much Millie-Milou. Just concentrate on getting well. But well done for the 4.5 miles.

I've also walked about 4.5 miles today and recumbent biked 6. (I was only going to claim 4 miles walking but it makes the maths easier if I claim the other half as well!!) That's 15 between us.

Hi
Please add 4.5 miles since I last posted.

So sorry I'm not adding more miles. Falling off my bike last week has really stuffed me up. I can't get on my bike. Heck, I can barely walk properly until I get going.

Sorry to let the team down. I'll try a bit harder tomorrow.

Please add 10 miles for me. So sorry but that is all I have managed since my 'off' on Tuesday night I'm feeling a bit pathetic at the moment. The wind should drop a little later so planning on a couple of miles on my bike, to see if I'm OK. This may or may not happen.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.

emoticon Great stuff Judy. I've had a day off from the gym. Found it hard to get myself going at all so decided I maybe needed a break. I went and got the train to Birmingham as I had a couple of presents to get and I've managed to notch up over 10,000 steps so that will easily be 5 miles before bedtime. Who would think that shopping could be so helpful to the team effort?

Wow, well done Jason. I hope you didn't walk on Wednesday. That was such a nasty day!

I've been to the gym and cycled 6 miles and done a bit on the treadmill. By bedtime that will be over 3 miles walking so I'll put it in now.

I agree A1

I've pushed myself much harder than normal as well.

I've wondered also about possibly staying in Scotland during March and climbing Ben Nevis with maybe a fitness minute challenge - and then make the journey down to Dover during April. For instance, for me to notch up 1500 minutes is rare. I usually, but not always, do 1000. If we all set our target fitness minutes and then combined them so again we're working together to do - maybe 5000 minutes(?). Oh, I'm taking this far too seriously aren't I? So many possibilities - but good to keep the momentum going and work as a team as that makes us push harder.

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

I was working, then had to stay in for the dishwasher repair man. So I went to the gym at 5 pm via Tescos. - What an exciting life I live!!! emoticon

10 lengths of the pool would take me most of February to complete, so I am happy with that.

I have 2 thoughts on reaching / not reaching John O'Groats.
1) The challenge has already been a success in that it has made me push myself harder than I would otherwise have done, and
2) On a hike, you should always enjoy the journey, not the destination. And I have enjoyed it - it has been fun.

We are near Kilmarnock, heading towards Glasgow

Well done A1. Lovely day here yesterday. Were you able to get out on the bike yesterday? Are you happy with equating 10 lengths to one mile? We stand a better chance of achieving our target and I think it reflects Brandi's hard work better.

Then I like the idea for March of converting all fitness minutes to miles. My exercise routine has been a bit unbalanced in Feb. Having discovered that I can do a mile quicker on the bike than anything else that's almost all I've done. Then again, the group challenge has made me work three times as hard as normal so it's been very good for me.

So ....310.5 miles to go. 11 days to do it.

Jason are you well? You've done brilliantly dodging the raindrops. Millie - Milou, how are you? Are you recovering?

Have an amazing day everyone.

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Sounds good to me, as long as everyone else is okay with it. 16 miles works out at 1,040 lengths so that would be 104 of the new miles.

Well done Judy

I do wonder whether we should make 10 lengths equivalent to a mile for our purposes? (Partly because we're not on target but partly looking at effort involved.)

What do you think?

I should be out on my bike today, but with the weather being as it is, I think it's advisable to stay indoors! I will have a session on my turbo-trainer in the garage this afternoon. (Going to see Dad's Army this evening)

It's a good idea to convert 60 minutes into an equivalent 10 miles I think - that's a fairly sedate riding speed, but makes the maths easy! And, after all, it's just a bit of fun!

4.5 walking miles today, 2 yesterday.

I meant to get out on the bike today but the wind coming off the sea was bitter! I decided against it as I would have had to ride all the way back into a freezing headwind. It didn't get above about 3 degrees. The ice didn't fully clear off the puddle in the back garden today.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.

Hi A1
Yes I did but never got a reply. Yes I'd wondered if there was a sensible way of converting minutes to miles. My gym programme only involves about 15 mins or less weight training. It's supposed to be 10 mins bike or rower or treadmill but most days I go and do 30 - 40 mins on the bike until I've done 10k. Certainly this challenge is making me work twice as hard as I normally do.
I'm guessing that you would normally spend a lot more time doing weight training etc and we should be able to convert that to miles. Not sure how many minutes = 1 mile. About 10?

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Did you pm HSHAR1?

He posted 'Count me in, I can add walking and cycling as I do a bit of both every day' at the start, but we never heard more.

I like the idea of total fitness minutes goals. That's a much more even handed approach and will give everyone fair credit for their efforts.

Perhaps we can then convert minutes to miles (running, swimming, walking, biking - whatever.)

Penance trying to make up for yesterday!! I walked to Church and back and went to the gym, where I tried extra hard today.

Walked 3 miles, rowed 1 mile and recumbent bike 10 miles. That's 14 altogether. Are you impressed??

Team Total 359.5 miles 514.5 miles to go!

I think we might struggle without another person or two on board. Anyone know any other Midlanders who might join us at Manchester and help us finish? I've spark mailed a couple of people but got no response. Failing that - we do have an extra day this February so we're not quite half way!!

Thinking about a March challenge - I love the idea of going down to Dover and then across Europe. I also appreciate A1s concern about doing different types of fitness. So I'm wondering about having 2 challenges going on at the same time - or even 3.

First to get to Dover over 2 months - by the end of April

Second to get a group total of (say) 8,000 (maybe 10,000?)
fitness minutes each month (so some of our efforts would count for both challenges, but other kinds of fitness would count for the minutes challenge.

Third - I wondered if Judy could swim the channel for us during March and April, so that when we get to Dover we can fast track to Calais?

All that sounds a bit complicated so I look forward to hearing a more streamlined version!

I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

I, too had a bad day yesterday, only walking the dog round the block.
Then in the evening went to a charity supper. Lasagne followed by ice cream - very nice, but very naughty.

So back to the gym this morning, and 4 miles on eliptical and 9 on the bike. I hope that makes up a bit for yesterday.

Oh, I've done badly today. Not only did I open a box of shortbread biscuits and eat the lot, but I then went to sleep and didn't make it to the gym. Only 2 miles today. Will track it properly tomorrow as I'm using the tablet now. Goodnight

I've walked 6 miles over the last couple of days. I haven't logged today's as yet.
Hoping for a bike ride if the weather holds.

My bike has new pedals to go on and I can't get the old ones off. I'm waiting for Kenn to get out of bed (story of my life) and loosen the nuts for me. I can do the rest.

Blessed are the cracked for it is those who let in the light.

Today I did another 8 miles. That's 75 miles so far.

I'll be taking the weekend off, so see you on Monday, we should be in Lancashire by then, crossing the Pennines.

Have you watched the videos I linked?

If you have, then I hope it inspires you to look at the area.

Thanks.

Jason.

Today I walked 6 miles so that puts on par for 67 miles so far. I've added the 2 miles from yesterday on today's Exercise Plan, so that makes it even for 120 minutes (15 minutes a mile). Also updated the links for the You Tube videos from earlier, so if you would like to look at them you can at your leisure.

Thanks

That's a huge amount of swimming Judy. How long does it take you?

I've done lots today. I forgot we're working in miles and did 1 km on the rower. That's 0.6 mile
7 miles on the recumbent bike and well over 6 miles walking so will call it 6.4 miles to keep the maths easy. I make that 14 miles. (That's a slight underestimate. I'm not cheating - honest!!)

Route for March, hmmmm, how about JoGs to Dover 742.6. I know that's less but I won't be here for most of March (even though I don't contribute that much). Then maybe we could try going across Europe and on & on?
I'm off to the pool in a short while so I'll pop in later to add my little mileage.

I find them fun to watch and inspire me for the next walk ahead. Also I've walked these in the past 35 years, and find them useful when I go for a walk when I lived in Wombourne. The line was built by the Great Western Railway, and was originally built to link Wolverhampton and Bridgnorth, but the building off Baggeridge Colliery in the Edwardian Period, made the railway take its route.

Thanks.

Jason.

Well, I try to either cycle, walk, or go to the gym for about 1 hour every day. Plus walking the dog, but he's getting on a bit and we don't go so far these days.

I confess that I have spent a lot more time on the stationary bike than the treadmill when I am in the gym this month, so as to clock up the most miles for the team!

But once we reach John O'Groats I will mix it up a bit more..

I have a number of videos which I have downloaded onto my tablet. I watch these while indoor cycling or on the treadmill. Otherwise I get bored after about 10 minutes. Some are just pleasant 'jollies', and others are more serious fat burning coached sessions.

I'm not sure about March - I suppose we need to get back from John O'Groats! But as I said above I really need to mix the activities up a bit more. I don't do enough resistance work in the gym, and I'm not keen on indoor rowing, although I know it's a good workout. So anything that will motivate me to do more of those things would be good.

Wow, this is amazing. It's a good motivator for me too A1 (Though I haven't got the stamina to do as much as you.) Somehow a group challenge is a bigger motivator than an individual challenge.

I loaded the Youtube and was amazed at how far you got in the garage. I have to admit I didn't sit for an hour watching it!!

We're pretty much on target now.

(What shall we do in March? Any ideas?)

You could walk along the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal Towpath, or the South Staffordshire Railway Walk from Wombourne to Aldersley (near Wolverhampton) and rejoin the canal there.

Today I was feeling energetic and walked 10 miles, but could only record 8 miles today on Sparkpeople, so I'll have 2 miles to record over the weekend, if the weather turns nasty as Nigel was saying on his Breakfast Show on Smooth West Midlands. I'll see you tomorrow.

A suggestion is to turn off the M5 @ Junction 6 and follow the A449 to M6 Junction 13, and visit the delightful villages off South Staffordshire. Just a thought.

Thanks.

Just shopping in Wolverhampton today - but if anyone knows Rowley Regis station - they've extended the car park. Brilliant, because we can always park there - except, after the earlybirds have parked, it's a good 8 minute walk at top speed (my top speed) to get from the car on to the station. Notched up 5 miles walking. Can really feel the effect of 30 mins exercise bike each day. Given it a rest today and probably tomorrow as it's my walking day, so back to it on Friday.

Thanks for updating the map A1. You're doing an amazing job there! I haven't got the skills to do that.

Yesterday we caught up a bit by doing about 12 miles over our quota. Brilliant! I thought we were going have to call in reinforcements but I think we can do this!!
