LINDYPOWER & ALANOF LINY - the Massapequa Preserve is my go-to spot too. Love it there, especially for long walks.

The Jones Beach path is nice now that it is getting a little cooler and there is not so much traffic on it.

I've had no problems at all on the LIE, but I tend to go early in the morning on weekends when the traffic is relatively light. I'm never the only one out there though, there are always other bikers on the road as well. I've found that I enjoy the ride west from Carl's Straight Path to usually an exit or two west of 110 then turning around.

Alan - Oh I know the Massapequa to Bethpage greenbelt very well. I love it. I was asking if the bike trip along the LIE's service road was safe.

It's a dedicated bike path. There's some foot traffic (roller bladers, walkers), but you don't have to worry about cars - except when you're first getting onto the path from the parking lot at the Bethpage Park end. The other end is at Sunrise Highway, just east of the Massapequa LIRR station. It's not a bad ride - mostly flat (which is what I love about biking on the south shore of Nassau County - the concept of "hill" doesn't exist :-)

Did the bike path out of Bethpage State Park last week. Excellent ride... only problem is that my car key fell out of my bike bag at some point along the 7 mile path. Never found it, had to have my fiance come rescue me with a spare key. Probably going to get charged for the key when I turn the car in (it's a lease) so that ride probably cost me $300. At least I found a good length path with some hills and mostly away from traffic (a few road crossings, but they are well signed both on the road and the bike path).

I did some bike riding this weekend. Saturday I spent some time tuning the bike and putting on new puncture resistant tubes and I went for a short ride. Sunday however I took the bike from my house in Deer Park along the LIE service road east to Route 111 and back. It was about 19 miles round trip. Heading east for me is better than west on the service road because I don't have to deal with crossing Deer Park Avenue.

Well I found a 10 mile out and back that I did twice on Saturday, basically 5 miles each way on Commack Road. By far the best ride that I can do right from my house that I have found so far. I'm sure I'll grow tired of it but for now that will do along with the 5 mile and 3 mile running loops I have near my house.

As far as I know, you can park on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway near Meadowbrook Parkway (I did a couple of weeks ago when I was out taking photos). I'm not sure about the area around Wantagh Parkway (I believe that Parkway also has a bike path, but I cannot be abolsutely sure - I aways used the one alongside Meadowbrook Parkway). Hope this helps.

that would definitely be a nice ride... from Sunrise to Jones Beach. I just have to figure out the best way to get to the starting point. Again I am thinking that driving and parking, doing the ride, and then heading to the gym close to work for a shower might be the best bet.

I'm not sure if it's still there, but it was years ago when I used to ride it. It is the bike path from Sunrise Highway (and maybe even further north) south to Jones Beach. Plus, once you get the the beach, unless for some reason they ban it, you can ride the boardwalk. It might be worth looking into.

I don't mind flat, the races I am doing are here on the island and most of the courses here are flat as well. The park you are thinking of is Bethpage State Park. I have considered going there... it is just a 10 mile or so drive from my house to get there. I have a membership to NYSC now so I could go there before work in the morning, ride and then go to the gym to shower and change. I guess for now I'll have to stick to the residential streets and plan for the longer rides out east on the weekend.

There is a bike path that runs from Sunrise Highway around Massapequa up to ... (damn can't remember the name of the park - it's the one where the US Open is sometimes played). Not a bad path, but it's often frequented by slow riders, kids, and the occassional roller blader.

Personally, my favorite route is just from Atlantic Beach to Point Lookout - but then I live just a couple of mile from there. For the most part I'll stay on residential streets where they are available, even ride the boardwalks in Atlantic and Long Beach. But there are stretches, especially once you get to Lido Beach where it's really just that main drag that takes you all the way out east on that strip of Island. If you're triaing for a triathalon though, this is not necessarily a good route, because it is flat as heck on the south shore.

You might want to look into joining one of the cycling clubs on the island. Massapeque Bike Club is one of the larger ones and they do a variety of rides for various skill levels each week (or they used to, as I recall when I was a member years ago).

Good luck.

So now that the weather is warmer I am trying to get outdoors on my bicycle, mostly to do training rides in preparation for the triathlons I have signed up for. Problem is that I cannot find a safe place to ride my bike. I sent away to the DOT for a map of bicycle routes and so far I've tried two routes that are on there... one is the service road of the LIE which believe it or not was not too bad, but there are a couple of intersections (DPA and the service road for instance) which are dicey. So today I tried Grand Blvd in Deer Park which is a designated bicycle route... what a disaster! Over by the Deer Park train station there is no place for a bicycle to ride and it was not an enjoyable ride at all. Anybody have any ideas of a good safe place to ride?
