So many places, so little time. I love the top of Indian Mesa/Wagon Mountain, Catwalk, Bandelier, Jemez, between Cloudcroft and Ruidoso, Frenchman's Cabin, and up around Mora. I am sure there are plenty more places just not thinking right now. People around here seem to like VLA, Bosque Del Apache, Box Canyon, Hop Canyon.

I just spent Mon afternoon thru Tues morning (28/29 Apr) @ Ojo Caliente. I've lived in New Mexico since 1990, and this is the first time I've gone there. LOVED it! We soaked in the variety of pools, including the mud bath (which got pretty cold due to the winds), walked the 2 mile loop around the river walk, and had an early morning soak in the semi-private pool for the room we stayed in. Since we were up at 0600, we were the only ones out at that hour.

I miss the Corrales and Placitas of my youth. Grandmother lived in Corrales and it truly was over the hill and through the woods to her house. My aunt still lives in Placitas, as far as I know, but I bet she is no longer the only house on that dirt road.

I sure hope so too. THere was an article in this morning's paper about the Catwalk and how badly the businesses in Glenwood are suffering because of the closer of it and some other hiking trails in the area and no fish for fishing right now. The forest service said it could be 3 to 5 years before the Catwalk is reopened but the businesses are hoping it's not that long. They can't survive that. It's so sad how life can change so drastically sometimes.

I know it will probably be a while. The Catwalk has been in my life since the late 60's and I miss it. I did hear that they would probably reopen the picnic area at some point earlier than when they will open the rest. But probably not for a while still.

They've dismanttled most of the Catwalk due to the high flash flood danger and debris flow potential from any rain events in the burn scar. I don't expect that the Catwalk will be open for 1-2 more monsoon seasons. Past large-scale burn scar/monsoon season evidence shows it taked about 2 monsoon seasons to flush most of the burn debris out of the watershed. Hopefully, the Gila will get a good snowpack this winter and the reseeding efforts will be sucessful for next spring and get some groundcover on the scar.

Sounds like fun! You know I'm sad because one of my favorite places, the Catwalk at Glenwood, has been closed the past few months because of all the fire damage further up causing the risk of flash flooding through the Catwalk canyon to go way up high. Not sure when it will re-open but so much of what slows down the heavy water was burned up in the huge fire this summer. It's such a great place I hope it can be reopened in the near future.

I love the Taos area and have been there several times. The drive through Red River and Eaglenest and that area is absolutely gorgeous although it's been a number of years since I got to do it. I want to be able to get up that way again from down here in the southern part of the state.

So, I'm prejudiced to the Taos area because I live up here at 8,000 feet elevation in nearly perfect weather where you can hike, ski, play disc golf, motorcycle, bicycle, fish, camp and enjoy the great outdoors. The colors are just beginning to change now and weather is perfect. One of my favorite times of the year. Of course I love them all as I ski in the winter, play disc gofl the rest of the year.

Oh I want to do that ride too! I did it 3 years ago at the end of April, and they were still on their winter schedule so they only go half way and stop at a point they have in the forest and then turn around and go back. It was also half the price. I enjoyed it so much but want to go back when the full run goes to Silverton which starts around the first of May sometimes.

LINDAKAY228 - I wish I had seen your post! I was there from the 9th until the 12 (ABQ). It was a whirlwind visit with family. I would dearly love to return to NM and spend some time
re-exploring the state - I saw a lot of it as a child, but have rarely been back. When I have been back, it has been for family events so there has been little time to play tourist.

Meeting up with you would be awesome some time! I would love to meet some Sparkfriends in person!

Down here in southern NM my favorite place is the Catwalk in Glenwood, but currently it's still closed because of the fire above it earlier this summer and the risk of flooding because the growth that could slow the water down was burned. But aside from that, another favorite place of mine is the Gila Cliff Dwellings. The views are amazing and the history of living in these caves in the side of the mountain is fascinating. It's a huge drop down into the canyon from the dwellings (right outside of them with just a little space) and I always wondered how they managed the kids in those days. The Gila River runs through the area, and my daughter was up there yesterday and said in a lot of places the water was black almost because of ash washing down from the burned areas. That is sad but the area is still beautiful.

I have not spent much time in the Land of Enchantment for decades, but I will be in ABQ for 3 days next week! My favorites from my childhood? the ABQ state fair in October eating Indian fry bread, Fourth of July canyon, Jemez Springs, Sandia Peak, my aunt's place in Mountainair and my Grandmother's home in Corrales long before it was developed. My other aunt and cousins lived on a dirt road in Placitas. Have not been there for decades...

For a great water spot, I love heading up to Navajo Lake to camp and have fun. The campground on Sims Mesa has quick, short, walking access to the lake, which has all kinds of cool coves and beach-like areas that are easy to walk in from.

It's a great boat lake, but it's also really easy to fish from the shoreline. I just like how quiet and peaceful it is and whenever I go, I'm with people I love, so it's always a good time.

Really, New Mexico has so many beautiful spots, even in the larger cities, that we are truly blessed to be able to enjoy it.

I like the City of Rocks when it's cooler but not too wild about it when it's hot LOL. And the snakes are out. Heard a few stories just this week about encounters with the rattler kind.

Don't forget the Deming Duck Race Weekend is coming up this month. Its fun for the whole family. Music, all the food we need to avoid, Arts and Crafts and so much fun racing or watching the ducks race. Yes they are real live ducks you rent. Last year the winners of the wet and dry track each took home $1400+. not bad for a $5.00 duck rental fee.

Come see us and laugh away a few pounds.

We also have 4 state parks here in the area --- my favorite is the City of rocks a great place to walk and explore having fun while getting in a bit of "E"

I love Bosque Del Apache, the VLA area, Tent Rocks and so many other places. I love being able to see for miles and miles no matter where you are!

Living in Ojo Caliente, I love the area around here - especially the hot springs! My favorite is the drive up the mountain to Canon Plaza, then off the end of the paved road and into the woods.

Santa Fe of course, since I live here. Actually, there isn't much of this state that I don't find fascinating. I live in Tucson in the winter so I drive across the southern part at least 2x a year. Can't say I'm too crazy about it tho.

There are many places in the Catwalk area, off the beaten track that are fantastic places to hike and gawk. emoticon

There are so many beautiful places here and I like diverse landscapes for different reasons. But one of my favorite places always comes back to the Catwalk at Glenwood. Sometimes I like to hike along the trail that goes beyond the formal end of the Catwalk trail. Hoping to take my daughter and grandkids there this Sunday if it doesn't rain.

Yes there are alot of special places in NM. I enjoyed a bike ride yesterday at the NAPI Farms(Navajo Agricultural Products Industry) It is great to see the fields planted and the new born calves You could see the snow cap mountains in Colorado that is about 60 miles away. It's just great to get outside.

Our boys used to go to Hummingbird Music camp in the Jemez, and the area around there is wonderful! I also like the Living Desert park near Carlsbad. My daughter says Sitting Bull Falls is really pretty. If it's not too hot, White Sands is cool, too.
I've always wanted to ride the Cumbres railway, but we've never done it. Well, there's still time. Taos is gorgeous, especially in the fall.

I enjoy the area around Ghost Ranch very much. And I have hiked many of the trails around Santa Fe--Bear Wallow, Chamisa, Aspen Vista--and always feel a sense of peace when I am up in the mountains. At Pecos Pueblo I had a similar feeling of spirituality as I did when I saw Stonehenge many years ago. Taos is "okay" but is often crowded. I haven't been around southern New Mexico very much except to drive through. I am hoping to explore it more this summer. I'd like to get over to the Zia Pueblo sometime.

I have three places that mean a great deal to me. Reed's Peak, Willow Creek, Hay Mesa...all in New Mexico, all different and all beautiful. What are you "special" places?
