I inherited a lot of art supplies from an elderly neighbor who passed. It took 2 years before I seriously looked at it. I gave some to the high school and kept some. I still probably kept too much.

Oh dear! Stuff.....all that stuff....

I recently “inherited “ all the jewelry making stuff from a dear friend who passed suddenly.

Boxes and boxes of quality stuff! Wire, tools, cabochons, beads, findings....

Have spent the weeks since sorting through my stuff, and hers.....

Yesterday I started cleaning my workbench in the garage. This is where I make birdhouses and the like. I am not even 1/2 way done and I have rid myself of 1/2 of a large trash can of "stuff" I might use someday. I also have a give-a-way box and surprise! I found some cool stuff I am excited to use.

Isn't Pinterest great? I just checked the pop top ideas, and there are some pretty good ones. I especially liked the metallic clutch and the bracelets with the colored ribbons or colored threads.

Have you ended up making anything yet, THEMEOF79, or are you still in the saving mode?

My kids used to string them together, and they draped them on an outside Christmas tree one time.

I have been saving red and white fabric from the donated dog bed fabric I receive from other quilters. Yesterday, I took it all out and ended up making a scrappy quilt top from it. It measures 44X68 and it cost me $0 except for the thread to sew it together. It is fun and pretty. I can't believe that people just toss these pieces.

An update to my earlier card post. I sold all my cards at our yard sale for our photo club. I figured now that I have a Cricut emoticon and lots of stamps and such I need to make my own. I ended up buying cards last week because I didn't get any made.

That's a great project! I think I posted one time somewhere about how Jennibellie binds greeting cards into a book, an idea that you might want to use for some of your cards. On the video she paints over her cards, but I made one for my granddaughter's birthday cards just keeping the cards as they were sent.

Here's the link to the first tutorial to "Make an Art Journal by Recycling Greeting Cards." At about 10 minutes into the video she shows how to cut the cards and bind them. You can watch the second tutorial to see how she adds beads to the yarn to decorate the spine.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyi3
Ve93We4

Jennibellie uses other cards to make the cover in that video, but I made my cover by cutting down a Post Grape Nuts cereal box, like she does in this next video. I like the size of the Grape Nuts box, and the box is sturdy to begin with. This video shows how to make the cover in her video, "How to Make 100% Recycled Art Journal from Cereal Boxes."

Anyway, they make nice little books for your special cards, in case you are interested. I think it's great that you've been going through your cards and are about ready to do something with the ones you've been saving.

Last night I went through 100's of cards to sort out what to keep and what to give away. I am going to store or make books out of the ones that I can't bear to toss like from my dad and sis and husband. The rest go in the recycle bin. I'm also putting about 100 in the yard sale stash. I will price them really low like a nickel each or 25 for a dollar. Lastly, I will send the rest to people I care about. Whew.

My new habit is to put them in my happiness journals. That way I have them as reminders of good times.

No kidding. I am trying to get over my hoarding tendencies. Yesterday I was talking to a neighbor and found out he loves pretty rocks. Well, I inherited a box of pretty rocks and honestly they are going to sit in a cupboard forever so I gave them to him. He was so happy and I have a big empty spot in my cupboard. LOL

This is where my Happy Journal comes in to play. Cards from friends and things I get on my travels. For instance I cut some of the brochures up for just the highlights of the location and then make some notes to show my thoughts. I put in ticket stubs from plays or travels. Even receipts might go in. It is wonderful to go back and look at this stuff.

This is a sample from my recent trip to see my son in Las Vegas.

I just got back from a trip to Boston and cruised the New England coastline. Wonderful weather the whole time! And I can't help but pick up all sorts of brochures, maps, postcards, and freebies while I'm visiting somewhere. I love to learn as much as I can about where I'm visiting, and reading the tourist information is a good way. So, of course, I can't bring myself to throw out these beautiful pictures, ticket stubs, and whatever else I've collected along the way -- including interesting pictures on (empty) sugar packets or tea bag covers. How could I toss that clean bib with the great line drawing of the lobster?! I have no idea yet what I'll do with these yet, but I'll put them in my box of ephemera and save them for awhile longer, anyway.

I'm still saving all sizes of cereal and other food boxes to make into book covers or book pages. The lightweight cardboard isn't archival quality, but hey, it's recycled! Some of my projects are almost finished, but I've certainly got a lot of boxes saved up for another day.

Every year I receive many free calendars in the mail, and I've been saving them to make envelopes, paper beads, and other colorful crafts. But my calendars are piling up faster than I have used them! My craft buddy Donna is recycling old maps to make triangle banners and asked if I had anything else that she could use. I'll take her several calendars on Wednesday to see if she wants to use them, and then SparkFriend McJulieO and I will help Donna string the map triangles together to complete the banners.

One year when we made banners to sell at the Friends of the Library Book Sale we glued large letters (mostly cut out of old book text or music sheets) on the triangles and spelled out different words to promote reading.

I just checked my photos, and for some of the banners we used rectangles instead of triangles. Some were made with recycled Christmas wrap, so we used other holiday-related words, as well. Here are some of the banners we sold.

For all of us who pick and save for our crafts, here is an excellent video presentation that I highly recommend. This TED talk by Susan Lenz is 21 minutes and 37 seconds, and for me, it was worth every second it took to watch and listen to the message. It spoke to me on so many levels, and during the talk she is stitching the whole time. Wait until you see at the end what she has created!

I apologize, but I have had trouble posting the link to the video. Please search YouTube.com for "Making Plans for Your Precious Possessions Susan Lenz." It will really make your think!

Lucky you, Jane!

This week one of my friends was cleaning out her house, and she called me to come over and pick up some bags of items. Some of my favorite things, which I'll save for a later "unknown" project, are some very ornately decorated one-ply napkins and some Chinese cut-paper designs.

Someday I will actually get around to doing something with all the things that I save! Lately I seem to have acquired a number of curtains that I don't use for various reasons and think I could use them to make tablecloths or chair covers or something. Someday.

Original GW on 9/1/11 - 134.5 lbs

Sounds like a great project!

I broke another necklace last month, and I tracked down all the beads that I could from off of a gift shop floor and stairway. Those beads went everywhere! Bookmarks and zipper pulls would be a good way to re-use them.

Put a few at my Daughters job and now I told them they are one of a kind.. That is correct cause I just use the old beads ...

My friend retired last month from working for a food broker, and he's brought me all sorts of store display items that have been discontinued and no longer in use. I gave several of them to team member McJulieO and another friend who work with the library's book sale, and hopefully they'll be able to use them to help get books & ephemera organized for the next sale.

I've saved some nice foam board, cardboard pieces, and heavy plastic flyers to use for book covers or book pages, as well as some double-sided tape. All in my ever-growing "Someday" stash!

If my cocktail/dessert paper napkins are just slightly used and not soiled, I save them to use for collages. Today while I was watching one of my travel shows on TV, I separated the plies on several of the prettiest napkin designs. This has to be done before you glue them down or else they won't adhere to the substrate properly. Although some have only two, most of the napkins have three plies and sometimes it's a bit frustrating to get that last, thin ply to come apart!

I'm gradually getting to that "someday" for using these beautifully patterned napkins.

Ticket stubs and Playbills. Haven't done anything with them yet, but I have a lot of them. What do you do with them?
