The new (old) me is back to enjoying many of the activities that I thought I’d given up forever. Hiking in the hills around home, running (no more marathons in this ole gal’s future, though!), and just having the energy to keep up with the young grandkids -- the rewards of living a healthier lifestyle.

Like many others, I was on a weight loss/regain roller coaster most of my adult life. Since joining SparkPeople in January 2014, I have not only lost the excess weight I'd been carrying around, but also (and more importantly for me) found the support I needed to keep it off for the first time in my adult life. I have maintained that weight loss for about a year and a half now, thanks in large part to my dear friend and fitness buddy, family, and the support I've received here at SparkPeople.

The key to my initial weight loss (and now maintenance) is exercise. I began my last (hopefully, final) journey to better health in June, 2013. I made no dietary changes, but slowly and steadily increased my exercise by walking/hiking in the hills and trails around home. By January, 2014, (when I joined SparkPeople) I had lost 20 of an eventual total of 50-lb...but that wasn't enough. That's when I began to see the wisdom in keeping track of what and how much I was actually consuming...what an eye opener! It took another eight months before I'd reach my desired goal weight and my body has continued to adjust to the new old me by shedding an additional ten pounds.

Maintaining weight loss is proving to be as difficult as losing it; but what works for me is a combination of exercise, daily weigh-ins, calorie tracking, and participation in challenges here on SparkPeople. Particularly helpful are the maintenance challenges on the At Goal & Maintenance team and the 5% Challenges.

Maintaining an active lifestyle is most important for me.

Run/walk a minimum of 20 miles per week.

Watch those portions! Track calories consumed and eat a nutritionally sound diet.

I am a native New Englander, having been born and raised in Massachusetts.

Have lived in San Francisco Bay Area for over 40 years.

Married to my husband for over 40 years, have 3 grown sons and 3 grandchildren.

Will retire from a career in college teaching at the end of this academic year.
