I have a family history that includes heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, so when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my last pregnancy, I knew that it was time to take charge of my life. I started my weight loss journey in January of 2007 weighing in at 190 and lost 20+ pounds that year and have kept most of it off. My goal right now is to get to 160. Once I hit 160 I would love to lose even more and eventually get to 135 or so, but I'm trying to take it one step at a time. I'm currently at 166 and only 11 pounds from being at a healthy weight for my body type. I'm thrilled to be wearing size 8 pants for the first time in my life...I love being in the single digits! Size I come!

I've also become a runner and completed 6 half marathons. I love the amazing feeling of knowing that I've run over 13 miles in a race! Pretty cool for someone who used to only run if chased!

Update 7/29
Make that 8 half marathons completed! I still can't believe how much I love running!

I was diagnosed with Grave's disease, a thyroid disorder, in February and I am really struggling with my weight right now. The medication that I'm taking has caused me to gain 20 pounds in the past 4 months! I'm exercising 60+ minutes at least 6 days per week, logging all of my food, and continue to gain weight. It is SOOOOOO frustrating! My doctor says that it will get better and I'll be able to start losing weight when my body gets adjusted to having a normal amount of thyroid hormones in my body, but I'm tired of waiting!

One really cool thing that happened recently was that my husband and I were awarded summer renewal grants (we are both music teachers) and we were able to travel to Austria for a 14 day self-guided biking tour this past June all expenses paid! It was amazing! You can read about our adventure at

I'm a band director married to another band director. We have 3 wonderful children ages 13.11 and 7 and 4 babies who we never got to hold on this side of heaven. I struggle with Grave's disease, a thyroid disorder, but am thankful that it is manageable with medication even if it has caused me to gain 20 pounds since starting treatment 4 months ago!

Thank you for the "Great job!" for how I did at the family picnic.:)
Yes, planning ahead works pretty well, I've found too, though I don't do it all the time, I do much of the time, and that much of the time, goes so much better in choices.
Yes, I did eye the pasta salad, thinking how yummy it would be. I heard that just imagining eating something -remembering how it was, can actually be "enough" -and I think I am finding that true. :)
I was a little tempted by the rice crispy treats (had the calories available for them), lol -but knew they'd just make me hungry (crazy, but true) and make me want more. Thinking about it further- I just didn't crave the sugar- didn't want it to make me crave more sugar, and would prefer healthier choices. YAY
