Hi! My name is Laura and I am 42 years old. I joined Spark several years ago, and I have participated, albeit, off again on again. I really believe that the Spark plan works, and I think the only reason I have failed in the past is because I had spread myself too thin, trying to take on too much all at once. I became overwhelmed and stopped Sparking.

This time, however, things are different. I am 100% focused on my diet and exercise. I have set very specific, measurable goals and laid out a specific plan for both diet and exercise.

I promised myself that for the next 8 weeks I will not cheat on my diet, nor will I skip exercise. 8 weeks is not a long time and I know it will fly by. Following this plan will not kill me. I can do it. If at the end of the 8 weeks I do not feel better and look better, than I give myself permission to go back to my old ways. If, however, I feel and look good, I will continue setting new goals and laying out a new 8 week plan. Of course, Spark will help me track it and provide the education and encouragement necessary for success.

It took me many years to realize that noone will care about me as much and as intensely as I will. Somewhere along the way, I stopped caring -- which was sad. My body suffered. The past few years, I have been on a positive journey of self-discovery. I have successfully made several significant lifestyle changes and I know these have improved my health, my sense of well being, my sense of self worth and greatly improved the overall quality of my life. Weight loss is just another step along the way, and it is truly more about changing the way I think of food and exercise than focusing on a number on the scale.

I have found many wonderful people here on Spark. Every journey I have read about has some part that I can connect with and find encouragement in. I used to sing a song at church when I was a young girl.... the beginning went like this, "It only takes a Spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around can warm up to its glowing."

I know I will succeed this time around. I am committed, focused and encouraged! I am Sparked!

10/27/11 - Well, @ 8 weeks I have lost 20.5 lbs. and I feel great. So, on through the next 8 weeks. Increasing my strength training. Continuing to do cardio - taking Saturdays off entirely, though. New eating plan - Eat Clean! Goal - remove another 20 lbs and go down 1 pants size to a size 12! Here I go again!

Fitness Minutes: 11,941

My Goals:
1) Lose 60 Lbs.
(Lost 20.5 - 10/26/11)

2) Strengthen and tone legs and arms

3) Lose the infamous belly roll encompassing my mid section

4) Fit into( a size 7/8 jeans
(Size 14 - 10/26/11)

5) By June of 2012, to strutt my stuff along a RI Beach in a Bikini!

My Program:
Walk every morning (that I am not going to the gym) with my dog, Jack, a minmium of 1 hour or 2 miles, whichever comes first!

Go to the gym in the morning Monday through Friday - 30 minutes cardio/20 minutes strength

Track Food and follow 1200 - 1500 calorie per day balanced diet

Eat every 3-4 hours, rather than 3 square meals

Never skip breakfast

Limit Coffee intake to 2 cups per day

Smile more, worry less

I am a happily married, very overweight, former smoker (quit 3/18/2011) who is committed to reclaiming my physical fitness and my health. I have 2 grown children and I live in the smallest state in our country, Rhode Island. I love music, my dogs and nature. I am a financial advisor, by profession.

    Hi Laura. Thanks for adding me as a Spark Friend; I've done the same. This is such a wonderful site with such supportive people. Many of my Spark Friends have helped me through some rough times during the last couple of years. I hope I can give back to my friends and this community in some way.

    Also, thank you so much for the very nice comment you left on my blog. We are so happy to have Thor as part of our family. He makes us laugh a lot with his silly personality, and laughter is something that is very important in our lives right now. We're taking things one day at a time and trying to enjoy all that life has to offer.

    Thank you for your support. I was so proud of having 7 fays smoke free but then I had some alcoholic beverages and it landed me right back to smoking. I have to make sure I don't drink at all for quite a while because smoking and drinking go hand in hand to me. I have got to do this for my son if not for myself. He is only 7 and I am a single mom. That is what I will tell myself if I think of taking even one more puff. I CAN do this.

    Thanks for agreat advice, I will try that. I need to try to out news to add fat in my diet that my stomach can accept it.
    Adding small amount with veggies may be a good start.
