I am a Catholic homeschooling mom of three beautiful kids - well, not homeschooling anymore. I was. My baby, Danny, was diagnosed with medulloblastoma (brain cancer) in March of 2013. Since then he underwent two brain surgeries, six weeks of radiation, and over a year of chemotherapy. He was in remission for a few brief months, and then relapsed. Next he had another brain surgery and then completed a year of very difficult chemotherapy, with multiple nasty side effects. After that year, he had three blessed, beautiful years of no evidence of cancer. That ended on March 15, 2019, when he had a seizure at school, which led to a diagnosis of relapsed, inoperable, terminal cancer. That relapse, in early 2019, was successfully treated with chemo that made the cancer disappear. It bought us a year of grace. That year ended in February of 2020, when an MRI showed that the cancer was back. There was really no treatment possible. My beautiful, beloved son Danny died of brain cancer on April 17, 2020, at home, holding his big brother's hand. He was 19 years old.

"If you get there before I do
Don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through.
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down.
Danny wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again I'll be loving you.
Love, Me."

My Goals:
Right now my goals are to incorporate small healthy changes. One other goal is to be able to exercise without severe pain in my hip...not sure if that is feasible with my arthritis.

My Program:
I am trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, plus walking as much as I can without pain.

Personal Information:
I am originally an Army brat and have lived in quite a few places. Currently I am in Texas. I have three kids, ages 30, 27, and forever 19. My degrees are in chemistry, but in late years I have mostly been employed in child care.

Other Information:
Strength of character isn't always about how much you can handle before you break, it's also about how much you can handle after you've broken.

Regarding antibiotics in meat for consumption, I also doubt the claim in the NY Times article, although one comment mentioned that heat (cooking) would kill any antibiotic residue. We don’t eat any beef, but organic chicken and pork are not easily found around here. I’ll have to try harder.

You and I both carefully choose which technology we will adopt – those things that will improve our lives not just what is popular with others. My cell phone isn’t “smart” either and I don’t do any online banking. I don’t mind putting the details of my spark life out there in cyberspace but not financial data.

Happy early birthday to Danny! My youngest is a Feb baby too... and 90% of the rest of my family are born in Feb as well. It's a busy month. Hope Danny is feeling good enough to enjoy his day and be sure to keep us posted on whatever fun thing you decide to do! emoticon

Thanks. We each have our "cross to bear" I guess, whether it's medical or something else. I am going to be 59 the end of February. I was in good shape and walking 15 to 20 miles a couple of times a year for Wounded Warrier projects and sometimes others. I did training hikes and walks all year, and also did water aerobics. I totally did not expect this to happen. They say shape I was in helped me to work toward recovery faster. I still have lot to go but have come so far. We look around us and see people not quite as bad but then we see the ones worse and think we're not as bad as so and so. My continued thoughts and prayers for you and your son and all you both struggle through.

Thanks for stopping by my page and commenting on my blog about the Spark Activity Tracker. I really do think it is a valuable piece of fitness equipment - it keeps things in perspective. I had an extremely busy day yesterday lasting from 5 AM - 11 PM but my tracker only registered 6,000 steps. I know today I have to STEP it up!
It definitely won't work if it stays in the box - so get it out and give it a try.
