This is round #3 update (it is 7-17-09). My first goal was to get a handle on the weight and alleviate arthritis. That is still my goal, but I went through months of extreme hunger between about 7pm and 10 pm. It was one of those circles of failure and despondency. Why was I doing this? Why was I so hungry? I have since purchased a Vita Mix and started a raw foods diet. I am probably only about 40% raw right now. The miraculous result is that I have no cravings. Whatever I'm getting in the mix of raw vegetables I am consuming in my green smoothie to kick off the day, and the late afternoon fruit/veg combo smoothie to help me eat regular portions at dinner, it has given me a sense of nutritional well-being I rarely had before. Anyway, I am trying some different lunch/dinner strategies to see which will work best.

My Goals:
My knee problems are intensifying such that if I have another major injury, I may have to quit my job doing newborn hearing screens. I have been influenced by "just one pound" and the fact that a 10% reduction in weight can really help me physically. I would love to be at my "perfect" weight, but I am content to just stick with this program one pound at a time, so the bites are little and more manageable and my psyche can handle it all and not panic. Losing the weight is scary because food has been such a comfort in the past.


My Program:
I know myself. I must chart my food, I must follow a physical regimen that is reasonable for an almost 60-year-old. I've torn muscles trying to be Jane Atlas, so I like the resistance exercises and rebounding on the mini-trampoline the best.



Personal Information:
I just moved to So. California from Oregon last year to help care for my parents. I love the sunny weather but miss the beauty of Oregon and all the fishing, crabbing, and boating I used to do. I also used to belong to a road cycling group of "slugs"--10-12 mph rides up to 40 miles. I haven't found a local group like that here. Whine whine! OK, so life changes. No reason to eat myself to death. There's got to be lots to do in this mass of humanity where I am now. (:


Other Information:
I have so many hobbies....my weekly Bible study is a must and really helps remind me that with Christ as my center, all things are possible. I love to crochet, read, my part-time job 2 evenings a week at an elderly care facility. I love old people and babies! I adore doing the hearing screenings on the newborn babies, too. I feel very blessed in my life, despite challenges. I want to remain healthy and active. I have begun to feel my mortality in the little aches & pains and so food & attitude are my conscious medicines.

    Good morning, Gail - I saw your page via the page of my very good friend, Yogaticha; I, too, recently relocated to Long Beach (from Washington, DC) and have started the SparkPeople plan again after an iffy start in January. I saw that you were using a mini trampoline.....I had one of those years ago and was considering getting another. I'd love to hear more about your results using one and what kind of workouts you do.

    Hey Gail, be careful with your knees. I just started a swim class (and hope I can get over the irritation from the chlorination!)
    The fitness guy at the gym said that every 4 pounds overwt impacts your knees as 8 pounds. I really don't want to add anymore wear and tear, will try to work in a Yoga class as well.
    Exercise has been my bugaboo. Glad you're more self-motivating.
