My Personal Best Mini-Challenge

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Here is a mini-challenge I am doing myself: I try to add ONE MORE PERSONAL BEST Each Week.

For instance, each week, I try to do my elliptical a little faster so that in my 50 minutes I go a little further distance each day. I started doing this by occasionally jogging in simple 30-second spurts. I have now increased my time to 10.5 miles in 50 minutes-- yesterday's personal best! Each week, I add at least another tenth of a mile... or a little more time.

I am recovering from my daughter's graduation dinner and recital reception... I let the *three white deaths* back into my life and gained a lot very quickly! (Sheesh-- I'd rule the world in times of famine! I'd out last you all!)

I shake up my exercise routine.
If you are in the habit of working out at the same time in the afternoon each day, try changing one day a week to the mornings-- our bodies get used to routine and it is good to shake it up each week, even a little.

I MUST avoid carbohydrates the majority of the time because I tend to be VERY carb sensitive. (I was diagnosed pre-diabetic.) I will eat lots of fresh foods: fresh, whole fruits and veggies... with healthy, unprocessed protein choices like fish, chicken and lean meats (as opposed to high-sodium lunch meats and cheeses.)

I notice the most difference when I've had more fish and seafood during the week-- of course, that is more costly.

I avoid breads, white potatoes and starchy veggies like corn, peas and beans. I avoid the *3 white deaths*: White flour, white sugar and salt. If I want something sweet, I reach for a fruit-- KEEP FRUIT HANDY AT ALL TIMES!

NOTICE-- I said *avoid* not *eliminate*!!! I always allow myself a little occasionally so I don't feel deprived.

Hugs! Camille

I agree with you. I am very competitive and am always trying to best my previous best.

I've also noticed that I feel better when I eat fish than when I eat any other meats.

I guess the important lesson here is to always stretch ourselves, however little and to listen to our bodies and what they need.
