Polycystic Ovary Syndrome -- Me!? So THAT's my struggle!

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

I was never able to have children-- ME, one who LOVES kids and thought I'd have ten!!! My sweet daughter was my miracle, adopted at the age of 2-1/2 days old... now a beautiful, married 25-yr old.

Last week, I went to a nutritionist to find out why I can be so absolutely PERFECT with my diet and still lose so slowly when others who began Spark at the same time have lost 90+ lbs by now (I've lost 56 and am not disappointed, just curious why it can be mere ounces each week).

I discovered I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I've had it most of my adult life and none of my GYN's ever addressed it. Hmmm?

SparkPeople.com has amazing articles about so many health issues and, of course, PCOS... so I read and read... learning about me for the first time in years.

So, there, I have it... a name and explanation to my metabolic struggle. Will knowing this stop me from trekking forward? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Will this news cause new excuses to creep back into my life? DEMONSTRABLY NO!

I simply feel a bit relieved that I am not going crazy and am pleased to know that there is, indeed, a reason why I struggle more than most. It's okay, we are all different.

The ironic thing in all of this? My GYN discovered that my sweet, adopted daughter, too, struggles with PCOS.

Life... what a ride!!!

What a surprise after all these years. But what an amazing thing, that you've been able to lose 56 pounds despite it! And now that you are armed with more knowledge, you'll be able to fight it even more effectively. Big hugs to you, and glad to see you are still the NO-EXCUSES gal. --Marsha

Dear Heart, I am glad that you have answers, but sorry they are unpleasant. And such cruel irony about your daughter! At least you will be able to go before her, and help her to navigate the uncharted waters. . .

Well! Having a NAME really does ease the mind!
As my mother is fond of saying, "Life is great if you don't weaken!"

I am sure it is a relief to have a name for the monster you are fighting. I just love your attitude, and I know that it will not keep you from continuing to achieve your goals!

I haven't been on-line much lately. I found a breast lump and am going through the whole mammogram/biopsy process. So far, it looks very positive as if the lump in non-cancerous. But anyway... one of the reasons I came to your page is that I was wondering if you could help me find a quote. I swear I saw it on SP but now I can't find it. It is something like... Our goal is not to prevent the storms but learn how to stear through them. But that is not quite it. Are you familiar with it? Wow, seems like that quote would be very appropriate for both you and I right now!

    I wish you the best!
    Dana.

Wow - I'm glad you found some explanations! And you are correct - it's an explanation, not an excuse. Your path may be a little different from that of "normal" - but then you realise that NO ONE is "normal" - each of us has our own challenges! :)

You WILL continue to lose weight - I can't see someone as determined as you not succeeding in WHATEVER you choose to do!

    Hugs,
    Maya
