WHAT DO I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP? I FOUND THE ANSWER AT 63!

Thursday, July 30, 2009

When I was growing up everyone was always asking me what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I didn't know. It made me sad when I didn't know when I thought I was supposed to know. Was there something wrong with me. my one grand daughter knew by sixth grade that she wanted to be a doctor, a orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine. This year she is a senior ih high school and she still wants the same dream, Another grand daughter has always wanted to be an interior designer. She is going into high school and that is still her dream. my oldest one is my grandson and he has wanted to be a fireman. he is now in college to get a BS degree in fire protection. He is also a paid on call firefighter in our town. They all knew wnat they wanted to do the rest of their lives when they were children.

then they is Grandma who had no idea what i wanted to do. I got married and had 4 children and 6 grandchildren. I thought that was my purpose in life. All my life I kept thinking that there was something missing in my life. When I was 58 I starting volunteer work in caregiving for alzheimars patients, I got to talking to the patients and there families and helped them how to get what they needed. I decidind FINALLY that helping people and guiding them was what i always wanted to do. I wanted to become a social worker.

Then i had to decide how i was going to go back to school. i decided to go to school on line. I contacted different colleges about their on line programs. Then I decided on Ashford University. I start on August 25,2009. I finally fulfilled my life.

    Hello Sharon,
I'm 46 and finally finishing up my AA in Deaf Studies:AA. At first I wanted to become an interpreter which is a major need for the Deaf community but have decided I wanted to help Deaf/Hard-of-hearing students in the elementary age with their education. I have 14 units left for my degree and then I'm going on to my Bachelors.

I'm excited that you choose a career....How is school going for you?

Hi...I am 56 and trying to do a career in Physical Therapy. Hard now to see, where I can make money and still pay off bills, for the kids, etc. Paul is diagnosed with cancer, and I just broke my leg and shoulder, so waiting game and lots of research to do, so I can move forward. Thank you for your inspiration. You are right, it is never too late. C.

Sharon, how absolutely wonderful that you discovered what your next career is and now you want to know more about it and everything an education brings with knowledge. You really did have a previous career but because of society, did or have not recognized that being a full-time house-person and mother is a career in itself. We are close to the same age and so I know that women were discouraged to chose to remain at home (I am guessing that is what you did). How sad. Now the pendulum as changed and anyone who chooses to make a full-time job of raising a family (women or men) are being given due positive recognition.
I went back to school at 42 and finished my Masters at 50. It is NEVER to late. I gave a speech on that very concept two years ago for Toastmasters.
    You are wonderful. emoticon

    Hi,

At our ages it is time for us to find our special thing. It must be challenging but yet fun to do. My husband and I are thinking about helping out more in some of the organizations we are in. I know it would just take one to keep us busy. Tomorrow my last grandchild will be heading off to first grade! I will have more free time than normal--changes are coming!!! emoticon

Thanks for sharing and I know that you will enjoy helping others.

Wow! So glad I'm not the only one. I'm 58 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I've been a stay-at-home mom, a career correctional officer, now I watch 3 of my 14 grandchildren while mom and dad work. You are an inspiration! I have been thinking about going back to school (if I only knew what I wanted to be when I grew up).

Congratulations. I told my 92 year old aunt Edna that when I grow up...I too am 63, I want to be just like her. She danced at her DGD's wedding with her BF. She walks 2 miles every day with him, and they go dancing 3 times a week. Wow!!! Best wishes on your journey.

I am 36 and I have had so many "false starts" on what I want to do with my life. I have started so many different business ventures and career moves, but all have left me feeling unfulfilled. So, for right now, I am stopping the search, and instead putting my energy into becoming healthy and fit. Perhaps in the process, I may discover a new version of myself that knows better what she wants from life. Thank you for encouraging all of us that it is never too late to find your dream!

Good for you that you didn't subscribe to the "I'm too old" attitude. That fantastic! I never knew what I wanted to do either. I just decided I needed to pick something and stick with it. I'm a nurse. I finally changed my career path to do Hospice work and it's very rewarding and I feel this is were I need be right now. However, I still feel like there is more to come and I will never really decide what I want to be when I grow up (I'm 43). Isn't it funny some people just seem to know from childhood? Keep us posted on your progress.

While I always knew what I wanted to be, I am now considering a change. I'm 55, and I've been a teacher. I love it, and I feel I've made a difference. Now though, as I am nearing retirement, I realize it's time for me to change what I will do "for the rest of my life."

I admire you. You still know what you want to do! emoticon

Your decision to return to school to become a social worker is wonderful. Let me know how on line college goes since I am thinking of doing the same.

We really never thought about what we wanted to be when we grew up. No take your child to work day. No career days at school or career counselors, etc. The choice back then was working, married or single. Married won or we would have been considered an old maid.

I had eight paid professions. Ten if you count married and raising children. My thirty year old children were in no rush to marry until they found their calling in life. They changed professions several times and so did their friends and they had opportunities we never had or dreamed of.

It is great that your grandchild know what they want to be. Go for the gold and your dream will become a reality.

Welcome to my club. I have to say though, I always wanted to be a nurse. However after being discouraged by my mother, and not feeling bright enough to college at 18, I ended up marrying and starting a family. My eldest is now 48, my youngest 30. I had three daughters and two grandchildren before I went back to school and got my degree at 53. I was scared but I suceeded above and beyond my own expectations. I had 15 wonderful years in nursing. I took many years of working in the wrong field before I knew what I wanted to be.

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES FOR HAVING THE TENACITY TO GO AFTER WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. I am really happy for you, and am sure you will be too. Whats age? We live longer now, and who says we have to quit dreaming. You hang on to that dream and goal. Do not give up. I think your great.

You so just made me realize I have to stop worrying about running out of time if I want to go back to school.

WTG on pursuing your dream! I, too, didn't know what I wanted to do in High School. It seemed like everyone else knew - but I didn't have a clue! It sounds like you did just what you wanted to and that was fine!
